POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Hey Guys, I just found this site after a hopeful search looking for someone who has or is going through something similar. I had RNY with a Minimizer Ring on the 18th of February 2020. I am 43 and 5ft 9In. My surgery weight was 296 pounds and I am now 238 pounds. A loss of 58 pounds so far. I had been planning/researching the surgery for 5 years and after my last failed attempt of maintaining, went ahead with surgery with full knowledge of what to expect (well so I thought). For full disclosure, my weight problems I think were based on years of yo-yo dieting. Mainly extreme calorie cutting and exercise to get to normal weight. However, when off…

  2. This will be a post full of many TMIs! I’m 3 days post op from VSG and am still experiencing a ton of pain, even with the pain meds. The worst pain is in my chest. My doctor said it’s just from gas but I’ve been passing gas and it isn’t getting any better. I’ve been walking a few times a day and that helped with passing more gas, actually it worked a bit too well because I pooped myself when I thought it was gas coming ??‍♀️. Told you, TMI! It was a clear slimy consistency so I don’t think it counts as a real bowl movement. I hope I have one soon because I don’t want to take a laxative. I also have a few seconds of excruciating pain whenever I sip something. It doesn…

  4. Started by Tb613,

So we got anew swim spa this summer... how long until I can get in it again? Staples officially come out tomorrow 15 days post op.

  5. Hi everyone, Im new here as this is my second post in 2 days. I have a question regarding GERD. Im 32 been pretty much overweight all my life and the small time (about 10 years ago) when i was in great shape, i did not suffer from gerd. I also have a small hiatal hernia that may or may not need to be repaired. I do not take medicine for the Gerd, it really doesn't bother me to be honest. I have been reading that preexisting GERD prior to the sleeve can worsen. So much so, that many times the surgeon will suggest a revision to the bypass. The bypass scares the life out of me and i just dont want to do it. No disrespect to bypass patients, But I rather not s…

Hello, I am getting sleeved at Hospital BC in Tijauana and wanted to know how people have handled their post-op care after being discharged and returning to the states. I know I will be able to get my lab work done through my PCP, but was wondering if and how anyone else may have handled this.

Hello....had my lapband removed and revised to gastric bypass 4 weeks ago......i am having a heck if a time knowing when i am full. I havent had any issues luckily. Anyone have any advice or how to's?

I lost 10 pounds my first two weeks after my ESG procedure. I haven't lost any more weight this week, which is very frustrating. My nutritionist's advise was that I should not be weighing daily. I'm finding that impossible. Are my expectations unrealistic for 16 days post op?

  11. Started by nolo56788,

I had my surgery 8/19 and I was 315. The lowest I've gotten 281 (saw it one time so it counts haha) and I've been hovering in the low 280s ever since. My nutritionist allowed me to go to a regular diet (albeit smaller servings) at my one-month check-in. I'm just starting to feel like maybe they moved me too fast and I stretched my stomach perhaps. Would any of you suggest a reset? I'm feeling kind of lost and starting to feel like I wasted money,

  12. Started by over65,

I have lost 70 pounds now. Have minor saggy skin in expected places and I can hide with clothes. But my neck is really ugly. I guess I had a lot of fat in double chin and I lost a lot fat there. What can I do (without plastic surgery) to improve my neck? I don't want to wear turtle necks all the time. Stats: 5'1", age 67, female. Highest weight: 245. BMI 41. Surgery Date: May 28, 2020. Weight at surgery: 211. VSG.

  13. Hello, My doctor hasn’t been any help. I wake up at least 3x a week with burning in my lower abdomen, nausea (drooling), and diarrhea. It only happens in the mornings and comes in waves. Anyone else experience this and found the problem? Thank you!

Celebrating a small win! 7 days post Gastric Bypass and 15 pounds/8 inches lighter... since I'm still on a fluid diet I don't seem to be as "swollen " as I normally would be. Wedding ring fits and hasn't in 3 yrs

  17. 3 weeks post-op. I'm only eating one, on a good day two, meals a day. So nowhere near what I should be, but I feel rather sick afterwards so it's hard. The portion sizes are small, not sure what the issue is. Does/did anyone else have trouble eating after surgery, and how long did it last?

  18. Started by Kay Smith,

I had complete bypass in Jan 14. Spleen was torn during surgery but sent home after 3 days later. After a week called GO as felt unwell he sent me to local hospital not where surgery was as that was 50 miles away our nearest bariatric surgery hospital. Had CT scan showed bad infection and blood clot around spleen had 7weeks antibiotics. I have had constant pain for 6months dispute pain killers. Surgeon just kept saying I don't know what pain is but I am sure it will settle in time ! 12 days ago they went back in with camera to investigate as was still struggling to keep anything down. They found a Peterson's defect which apparently is a hernia which turns inwardly and not…

  19. Overall things aren't going to bad. I have started to eat some pureed foods (can't stand baby foods), so I make most of them or just eat yogurt. I can't get used to the change in the flavor of foods. It's hard to know what to eat when the taste of food has changed and I have to find the right seasoning for what I can eat. I also am having some trouble finding food that I can make smooth enough to not upset my stomach and I feel so bloated after eating. I wait the 15 minutes before I drink after I finish eating, but when I start to drink is when I feel bloated and I want to eat again. What have/did you eat during your first couple weeks after surgery? Please NO protein sha…

  21. I think I'm swallowing air in the night. Sometimes having to sit up and burp because of the air in my new pouch. I'm worried this is stretching my pouch. Is this something I should be concerned about?

  22. I’m feeling scared and frustrated and uneducated. I have always had heart palpitations and high pulse. Before surgery I was on 3 no pills. I’ve had several full cardiac work ups and it’s always been normal. I’ve struggled with fluids since surgery as in I’m probably always dehydrated. I have weened off of two of my bp meds (lisinopril hctz and norvasc) and I take 25 mg of metoprolol twice daily. Everytime I try to come off of beta blockers my bp and pulse sky rocket. I had an incident in July I was at work and all of a sudden my pulse jumped to 140-160s they gave me adenosine (med that stops and restarts your heart) and it didn’t work they gave me a beta blocker and I wen…

So, I am 7 weeks out and I have been getting horrible headaches almost everyday. At first I thought it might have been caffeine withdrawals, but I assume since it's been out of my system for two months this can't be the case. I take chewable Advil and it helps for awhile. I never used to get headaches and am just wondering if any others had this symptom.

I had gastric bypass in 9/15. I am 5’1 and day of surgery I weighed 250. I have Hashimotos. I’m just looking to see ppl with similar stats and their weight loss. Please, I know everyone is different, looses differently etc. I just would like to see how other ppl are getting along. So far, I’ve lost about 18 pounds post op and that seems to be so little to me. I lost about 3 or 4 pounds this week (third week weigh in) and that seems so minor. Again, I know everyone is different, I’d just like some similar ppl sharing journies so I can relate! Thank uou!

  25. Alright so I had my VSG in January and attended my first large function since the surgery last night. I did get compliments on my appearance but also received some "you look sick/anorexic/too thin" comments from family (it was a cousins wedding). I am content with my weight right now, although I am currently trying to up my protein and build more muscle, but overall I feel fantastic. I plan on having one more child in the near future so I know I will put weight on during that process, so I kinda want to tell people to just back off [emoji23] but I'm a very timid person, so my question for everyone is, how do you deal with comments like this? I honestly wasn't really sure …

  26. Started by STLoser,

So, the biggest reason I had my Loop DS was because I was diagnosed with NASH and hepatic fibrosis in January. They say it's reversible, but I worry a lot since my liver already has scarring. The good news is, my liver enzymes were about double what they are now before surgery, so hopefully it's improving. My question is for any of you who might have this condition and are farther along in your surgery than me. Did your NASH reverse?

  27. I am 1 week post op and everything I've read says 1/4 of a cup should fill you up. I ate 2/3 of a cup of thinned cream of wheat and i still felt like i had room for more. I also feel like I could drink an entire 11.5 ounce premiere protein shake without trouble. This makes me so nervous. Anyone else feel like their sleeve is larger than expected?

  28. Started by Liz989,

I will be three weeks post op on Monday. I have only lost 8 pounds and haven’t lost any weight in the last two weeks. My surgeon said I should be losing five pounds a week. I’m a far cry from five pounds a week. Is this normal? If so, when will I start losing weight again?

  29. Started by ChubRub,

I feel like I've tried every shake out there, but have yet to try a protein bar! I'm going camping and hiking, and am thinking that protein bars might be an easily portable lunch to throw in my backpack. Any recommendations? Preferably something that is yummy, and won't make me poop my pants (no bathrooms on the trail)! Thanks so much!

  30. Started by ResaRoo,

I’ve been feeling a bit down lately. I’m almost 8 months post op and so close to 100 lbs down. This past week I gained 4 lbs and it’s really getting to me. Despite losing so much, I still have 100 to go, and I don’t really see where the 100 lbs has come from. I feel so much better physically, but I feel like I look so weird. I’ve gone down only 3 pant sizes and only lost 1 inch around my calves, which seems crazy for a 100 (almost) lb loss. And I have huge calves to start with. (24 inches!!) I don’t know if it’s hormones, stress from work, or if this is a typical feeling at this point in the journey. Any advice or suggestions?

  31. Question for any one who had surgery and had hyperthyroidism (HYPER (the one where people who have it are usually skin just apparently not me) not HYPO). Did the surgery mess up your TSH levels? Before the surgery we got my levels to normal and was able to come off the meds. Was off them for 2 years and no issue. Then I had my bypass in March 2020. Levels were just checked and my TSH was 0.005..... so SUPER low

    Hi everyone !

Has anyone had an abdominal panniculectomy after WLS? I scheduled mine for December but wondering what recovery looks like and how it compares to the pain/recovery from Gastric Bypass Surgery. Any thoughts/input would be appreciated! Thanks, Sarah

  33. Started by Lanie992,

So at my four month post-op appointment - I was complaining about still having fat on my stomach. My doctor said some of it is loose skin and that no amount of exercising will help with that. ( I exercise at the gym a minimum of 1½ hrs per day, at least 6 days a week). When I got home I really looked at my tummy & agree with the Doc.. a lot of it is just loose skin. My stomach is where all my weight goes, so of course I will have sagging skin there.. not sure why I thought I wouldn't. Anyway, I know some people have surgery to correct this.. I do think my loose skin has improved in the past few weeks since my last appointment with him, but did time help with…

Help! I am not even a week past surgery and today I started experiencing intense physical hunger. Nothing I am drinking is taking an edge off of it. I am so miserable. Please encourage me- I am just desperate.

  37. Started by Michelle,

I had my surgery on Monday and got home today. I need to take a multi vitamin and calcium. What does everyone suggest? I am also struggling with what I eat. I had chicken broth, jello, lemonade, sugar free popsicle and water today but I don’t feel I had enough ounces of in take.

  38. Hey! So I’m 4 years post op with gastric sleeve and I’ve just recently fallen ill... my symptoms are constant and not easing up with any medication. After GP appointments, specialists appointment and even a trip to the emergency department I finally decided to call my surgeon who thinks it may be a hiatal hernia or GERD. He said if it’s the hernia he can repair and if it’s GERD you will need to go ahead with the bypass... is this true?? I’m 163cm tall and 57kgs... I really really realllllly don’t want to get the bypass but I’m feeling so sick daily... has anyone experienced GERD after the sleeve??

  39. Started by bailey3,

I’m really having a hard time during this liquid diet. I just want something solid sooo bad. I honestly feel like I could move on to the next stage but don’t want to set myself back. At this point I can’t wait for some cottage cheese next week!!

  40. My friends have been very supportive through my WLS and I have no problem with going out to eat with them when the time comes. Was it very strange going out to eat and watch your friends eat the regular way the always did or did they cater to the way that you needed to eat and ate small meals? Were you self conscious or did they seem different? Right now it just seems like it going to feel rather strange to go out and eat for the first time....Tell me about your first time eating out after your WLS.....

  41. I had surgery on 9/16, and am having the issues listed above. Did anyone else have these things linger this long? I got released from the hospital at 5 days because my potassium and magnesium was low so they wanted to make sure they were normal before they sent me home. Now that I am home, I can't get a balance on how many pills I have to take vs how much room I have in my stomach, I have too many pills too take and not enough room in my stomach. Any suggestions?

  42. Started by strongsleeved,

Hi I was converted on the 23rd to RNY from the sleeve 3/12/15. My left incision feels like its burning or cut. I also have neck pain? Any thoughts?

  43. Started by Toyaboo22,

I was sleeved September 12, 2012 and the first couple of months I had to remind myself to eat. I never had hunger pains except for some rare head hunger if I saw others with food. I notice now that I'm hungry all the time and I can eat a full plate of food. I haven't lost any weight since last December and I know it's because of my eating habits. When our sleeve was done, I was under the assumption that they removed the portion responsible for producing ghrelin, so why is it that I'm always hungry? Has anyone else experienced this?

  44. Started by Bookkeeper bariatric,

I am always soooooooo hungry ,I want to cry... I cant stand drinking something with artifitial sugar anymore. Is it normal?

  45. Started by KrissyNY,

Is this okay? So I was super hungry and today for breakfast I ate an egg muffin just one and it went down slowly and I chewed it into little tiny tiny pieces so far no backups! Is this okay? I don’t see my surgeon until a week or so. I’m supposed to be on purée but that say well but now I feel like my body wants a foods. I’m not in any pain or so I wonder if this should be okay. I’m going to text my doctor and let him know I ate one in a half lol but just wondering if anyone did this at 6days post op as in trying anything small out ?

  46. Started by krystel,

Hi guys. I am 2 years post op. Lost 20 kgs with the sleeve surgery and now i gained back 10! How can i get back on track??

  47. Started by cindyt,

At what stage is it OK to eat protein bars? I am a month out and tolerating everything I have eaten so far. I am doing soft foods. I still do one protein shake a day and I am tiring of them. I bought some premier protein bars today but can't find in my diet documentation any mention of them...

  48. Started by LAJ23,

No nasty comments or judgment, please. So last night, we went out for Mexican at a new place nearby. My husband ordered an organic, all-natural "skinny" strawberry jalapeno margarita and I had....water. ? After a few mins of him raving how awesome it was, I decided to give it a try - and yes, it was AMAZING. I had several small sips over the course of an hour, expecting at any minute for it to hit me like a ton of bricks, but it never did. It had absolutely zero effect on me, even though he insisted it was pretty strong. I'm just over 5 weeks post-op and at my appt. with my dietician last week, she mentioned I'd be starting my "general diet" on 9/29 and that nothin…

Hi all! I have all my paperwork for what to drink/eat for my clear liquid & full liquid phases. What I don’t have is an idea on how much to drink/eat during full liquids. I know I can have thinned Greek yogurt, thinned applesauce, thinned & strained soups, etc. But, hypothetically, could I sip on soup or eat yogurt all day long as long as I got my protein in? (I wouldn’t actually do that) In the purée phase & beyond I’m told how many ounces of each category to have in a meal. I just need an idea on how much to consume during my full liquid phase. Any advice is much appreciated!
