Feeling frustrated at week 3

Recommended Posts

I lost 10 pounds my first two weeks after my ESG procedure. I haven't lost any more weight this week, which is very frustrating. My nutritionist's advise was that I should not be weighing daily. I'm finding that impossible. Are my expectations unrealistic for 16 days post op?

Congrats on your surgery & congrats on experiencing your first stall. It happens to us all at about week 3 +/-. Yep, it can be very frustrating especially if you don’t know it will happen because you think you’re failing.

I liked to think of them as your body taking a breath & trying to catch up with your weight loss so far & the changes you’ve been making to your diet & activity. It’s like when you’re in a stressful situation & you just want to close your door & get away from everyone. Your body is closing the door to regroup.

This won’t be your only stall just your first. Your stall may last a week or a couple of weeks but they do pass & your weight will start to drop again.

Give the scales a break for a couple of days while stalling. Some say to increase or decrease your caloric intake or activity level to break the stall. I just stayed my path & the stall would break.

You’ll be ok. Good luck on your journey.

Thank you. Good to know I’m not alone with this.

Your start weight is lower hence your weight losses are likely going to be slower, but 10lb in two weeks is not insignificant, its a great loss.

You're in a stall which could last 10 days to a month. You will start losing again. Your body is just confused right now. I know people advise to stop weighing yourself but for some of us - it is a compulsion. I've weighed myself every day since my surgery...

Once you accept that stalls will happen in your journey - you won't get as frustrated at the scale. Good luck!

it's the three week stall. Almost all of us have our first major stall sometime during the first 3-6 weeks after surgery, and it's usually the third week (hence, the name). If you do a search for three week stall on this site, you'll find over 15,000 posts on it (and no, I am NOT kidding). Just stick to your plan and the weight loss will start up again. Stalls usually last 1-2 weeks, but occasionally longer. Stay off your scale if you need to and know that it'll eventually break.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
