1 week post op, stomache holding more than expected?

Recommended Posts

I am 1 week post op and everything I've read says 1/4 of a cup should fill you up. I ate 2/3 of a cup of thinned cream of wheat and i still felt like i had room for more. I also feel like I could drink an entire 11.5 ounce premiere Protein Shake without trouble. This makes me so nervous. Anyone else feel like their sleeve is larger than expected?

It's not that your stomach is holding more than you expect, rather as you are only having liquids and very soft mushy things, it is not holding it much at all, and letting move on through. Once you get onto more solid things, it should be much more restricted. Some will be very restricted on liquids if they have a lot of inflammation in the stomach from the surgery, but it's no problem if you don't (I didn't, either, and could down fairly large amounts of liquidy things even in the hospital, to no concern of the doc.)

this is the most important time to follow your clinic's guidelines, since like the above poster said, you likely won't feel much (if any) restriction until you start on solid foods, and also, you likely had some nerves cut during the surgery, and it takes awhile for them to regenerate. So don't chase the full feeling - you're not going to get it for awhile. Just measure out however much you're supposed to eat or drink and just eat/drink that. I know it's weird, but...

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
