POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by jadore,

Did surgery 24th Feb 2021, weight stalled on second week, by third week i enrolled for PT coz my energy level was really low. And wow!! Did my recovery accelerate, am 2h gym daily now of course supervised by my PT, started swimming lightly 3 days ago and and my wounds are officially dried( there was a puss between wk2-3). Am happy to share this and cant wait to discover the new me. Oh yeah will be starting keto soon and now researching about food and wow i had most of my understandings wrong about food.. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/14-foods-to-avoid-on-low-carb#TOC_TITLE_HDR_15 Have a great journey everyone. I was 98kg before surgery and almost a month later, now…

  2. Started by Tim C,

How many calories are you guys getting in a day on average? I am only one week post op and have a Zoom call with Doctors office today and do not remember hearing a number from surgery to regular diet. Let me hears from you on you caloric story after surgery. Thanks

  3. Hi friends My insurance just approved my surgery and surgery is on Wednesday. I was wondering if anyone had any “hacks” or essentials that can make life easier for post op experience. I heard little medicine cups are helpful, any other suggestions are appreciated Thanks Mark

  4. Hi I got the gastric sleeve on the 5th of March 2021. Weight was going down steadily for the first 10 days and now it just remains the same or increases a little. Any advice on what to do ?

  5. Started by caitmarie,

Hey all. Wasn’t sure what section to post this in. Question for those with tattoos and skin removal. I’m looking at tattoos on the front/ outside of my thighs and or the outside of my arm or shoulder blade area. I do know I want skin removal once I finish the rest of my weight loss. I am about half way. With the skin removal did your tattoos get stretched or warp in these areas with the continue right loss?

  6. Started by jmarie26,

I am two weeks post op. I started the puree diet phase today. My surgeon did not have me on pure liquids for the last couple of weeks though- I could eat jello, pudding, apple sauce, thin soups w/out chunks, yogurt, instant mashed potatoes, etc.... I have been putting my food in a 4 oz paper cup- usually about half full, sometimes a bit more. Never to the top. So about 2-3 ounces every time I eat. I usually eat 3-4 times per day. As I introduce new foods, I am concerned about how I feel while/after eating. I am not sure if what I am feeling is normal for this point, if I am overeating, or if the food is not agreeing with me. I have never thrown up and only on…

Hi Everyone, I hope everyone is safe and having a successful journey to a better, healthier lifestyle. I am 3 weeks post-op and have learned a few things along the way that I would like to share. 1- I have an intolerance of dairy ( I hope it's only temporary) but I switched to Lactaid milk and it was the best decision I made. I love milk and I am glad I get to keep the flavor. I am not a fan of the alternative soy, almond, etc. 2- another one of my favorites eggs is a hard no for me. I learned not to force it and will try again in a couple of weeks. 3- VITAMINS!! I was feeling sluggish and I wouldn't say depressed but definitely heading toward that…

I’ve been out of surgery for a little over 7 weeks now. Ever since I was cleared to have mushy food, everything just tastes so bad.. my mother used to make these AMAZING turkey meatballs, and now they taste repulsive, as do MANY things I enjoyed before. When will everything taste and smell normal again?

  9. Started by Hopefulin2021,

I’m a week out post op and even though I haven’t felt hunger I want to chew something and it’s killing me!! This is so much harder than I thought I just want to chew. I’m not going to do anything stupid but just venting helps.

  10. Started by Jnfinney,

I am a week post op today. One thing I’ve been noticing is that some days it is easier to “eat” and get my fluids in and some days I struggle to get things down. Today I’ve tried broth and a protein shake along with crystal light and water, but I have no desire to consume these things. Other days sipping on my water is so effortless. Has anyone else felt like this?

  11. Started by Tim C,

I got the call on Jan 25th that I was scheduled for surgery on 2/23. I was postponed from the original date of 12/16 becuse of Covid spike. I have lost 34 lbs since 1/25 about half before surgery and half since. This is my second stall in less than 4 weeks. The first lasted 4-5 days. I am on day 5 of the second stall. I am around 1000 calories a day, getting all my liquid and Protein. Hopefully this won't last much longer and the scales will start moving again....very frustrating.

  12. Started by Mark P3,

Howdy folks I’m scheduled for surgery on 3/24 and was wondering how much help I’m going to need to get around? I have a 7 month pregnant wife and just want to make sure I don’t need her to overexert herself to help me. Thanks Make

  15. Surgery date was 2/24 Traditional Duodenal Switch. One of my Incisions hurts like a B**** it usually hurts the most when I stand up and make certain movements. The only Relief I get is if I hold up my stomach with my hands from the bottom. It's not infected and my Dr has already seen me and told me it was the Incision where alot of Muscle and Nerves blah blah and I won't start to feel any pain relief for another week (this was 3/1) I had the Sleeve done in 2014 and never had this type of pain. Please tell me I'm not alone and tell me you had similar experience and there is a light at the end of the Tunnel very soon! My pain level is a 9-10 btw and I have high tolerance fo…

  16. Hi, I have just stumbled across this forum and thank god I did as I am hoping to get some help. I has a the Sleeve surgery in 2009 and then had a SADI or SIPS Bypass ( I think that is the technical term for it) in June 2017. I am in Australia and they were just starting to use the SADI option so didn't have a huge amount of feedback available. After having the sleeve surgery done I was diagnosed with an auto immune condition Lupus (obviously not from the surgery). So after years of pred/steroids to treat my condition I had started putting weight back on so had the bypass done. When I had the surgery, everything went ok with that part, however from them moving my Pancreas …

Hello fellow Feb. 2020 weight loss peeps. Since it’s now March and we’ve all had our surgeries, I thought it would be nice to start a post-op thread. ?

  18. Started by Tim C,

I believe I thought I would lose a pound a day after surgery. I have lost 17 pounds in 23 days post op. On a 2nd stall right now which is wierd to have so fast it seems. This must be the 3 week stall I have read about, how long did this last for you? I guess this is just part of the process.

  19. Hi friends, I’ve spoken to a few people who’ve gotten VSG and like everyone they just regret they didn’t do it sooner. I’m just curious bom everyone experience. How long until I can eat a piece of grilled chicken? I’m a big BBQ guy so this is my season. I know I’m going to go through the surgery but just curious, how long did you guys wait for a piece of protein Like fish, steak, or chicken. Hoping these negative thoughts go away. I’m on day 6 of my liquid diet and I’m having cravings. Thanks Mark

  20. Started by Tim C,

Have any of you guys had Tummy Tuck or Mini Tummy Tuck? What was the cost of the procedure? Why did you choose one over the other? Thanks and I hope to hear back from some of you.

  21. Started by elenaweight ,

Hello all. I had gastric bypass on 9/16/20. I’m having a very hard time eating protein every 2 hours. My dietitian said the I must eat every 2 hours! Does anyone have this same problem? I need to consume 90 grams of protein a day. Any suggestions are welcome.

  22. Started by JustJazzy,

How long after you had procedure did you start working out. I know it’s way too early for me start. I’ve just been doing it so much before surgery and I don’t want to lose that motivation.

  23. My surgeon and nutrisionist pointed us towards Bariatric Advantage chewables. Kind of like Starburst. What are some other good ones out there? What are you taking??

  24. Started by ShoppGirl,

Not only do I not love the food once it’s been puréed but I am also nervous that I am not making it mushy enough while not wanting to make it mushy at all. This is just NOT a very fun stage. Any tips or recipes would be appreciated.

I am three weeks postop and a few days. I am only taking one small blood pressure medicine, besides the anti-acid postop med. The nurse for my surgeon just informed me that I need to crush meds for up to a year. This seems like a ridiculously long time. Crushed blood pressure med taste disgusting no matter what I put it in. And no my weight loss will most likely not rid me of the high blood pressure ☹️ Even when I was skinny I had no blood pressure issues until I had a near death experience with the pregnancy of my daughter. Hospitalize multiple times, HELLP syndrome, the works. She is 17.5 years old...And I’ve never been able to come off the blood pressure meds…

I stayed in the hospital for 2days. My 2wk f/u my weight-in was 208lbs. My Dr was upset bcuz he said I should hv lost 20lbs. Hell, I was happy I lost what I lost being I was in so much pain. I was suppose to go back for my 6wk f/u last week 2/10/2020 but my pain in my back was killing for 3 of the 4wks. so I rescheduled for 2/17. Hello everyone. I had the gastric sleeve yesterday morning. I felt pretty darn good yesterday, but today I seem to be in a bit more pain in my abdomen. I have also had a few bouts of nausea, and honestly I’m starting to wonder if I made the right choice. I know I’m being dramatic and that this pain won’t last forever. How long was it before you guys started feeling better?

  28. I've had no trouble with water from the moment I woke up from sugery. I have been able to drink not just sip. I believe I can already hold close to cup of food. I haven't tried it but I feel like I have room to spare after half a cup. I am not pushing the limit. I have not been sick or nauseous for a minute. I also have no hunger or feel the need for food right now. Just wondering...This does not seem to be common. I have lost 15 pounds in 17 days since surgery.

I am 5 weeks post op and from day 1 my taste buds have completely changed. EVERYTHING and i mean everything smells and tastes horrible. I am currently on soft foods but still my favorite foods that i am able to eat have no taste or have a bad taste to them and I am extremely sensitive to all smells .. Will this pass? Am I doomed to never enjoy any foods again because other than fruit and toast, nothing tastes good. It's like my taste buds have completely changed for the worst...?

  32. My sleeve was the 9th so I am just over a week out. I feel like if I let myself I could sleep all day and all night. No pain, just tired. I know sleep is good for healing so I am taking naps but is this normal?

  34. Started by Jnfinney,

Hi all. I had surgery Monday 3/15. I’ve been quite a bit more sore than I had anticipated (not sure what the heck I was expecting ?). But I do have a couple of questions. 1. I’ve noticed my eyesight gets blurry when I try reading things. For example, reading things off my phone my eyes go blurry and last night I was writing a couple checks out and had a heck of a time seeing what I was writing. I have been taking dilaudid at night before I go to bed and the internet says that temporary visual impairment is a side effect of dilaudid. Does anyone else have experience with this? 2. My dietician and surgeon said I could start drinking skim milk 3-4 days post op and wa…

I'm so glad and happy, after 4 years I finally did it! I thought it was so much painful, since I wake up from surgery I haven't nausea or vomiting, little bit annoying the tube frome the stomach. I'm from Italy and in my country I wasn't too fat for sleeve passed by national health care, so I found I private clinic in Carthage and after a long trip I did it! I'm so happy, this is my reborn. I have a question! Tomorrow I've to take the plane to return in Italy, it's only 50min and then 6 hours of train, I'm with my mom and she's a nurse so I'm relaxed about assistance but I'm worried about weakness. So I have an incredibly controversial and rather personal question for the lovely people of BariatricPal. I’ll be upfront, I’m a 20 year old guy in college so pre-op I was a party animal. My question doesn’t relate to alcohol but to illicit-drug use.. I understand this is a super touchy subject but is there anyone that would be willing to share how they get felt or reacted to the use of illicit drugs (molly, snow, bars etc.)

  39. Started by Arabesque,

I knew it would be coming. I know it does happen to us all but I’m still annoyed that the honeymoon period of increased metabolism, lack of hunger, etc. seems to be ending for me. First, I noticed a little scale creep. I fluctuate between 48.1 & 49.1kg & have for a few months now. Well I did. Now I fluctuate between 48.5 & 49.5kg. Now I know that‘s only 1/2 a kg (about 1 pound) but I also know I’ve had no change to my diet, calorie intake, activity & it’s been doing this for a month. Then two weeks ago, I felt really hungry. All day long. For three days in a row. On the second day, I realised the hunger was just like my old hormonal (pmt) cravi…

This may be a longshot, but I thought I'd ask anyway... I'm down 49.5lb as of yesterday morning. I've noticed in the last few weeks, I've been sitting with my legs crossed a lot more often - because it's comfortable, and I finally can! - but I've also been enduring increasingly worse hip and back pain. It got really bad this past weekend and is now to the point that I can't sleep (kept me up all last night). Motrin/Advil, heating pad, and doing stretches hasn't helped. It also seems to be worse on my left side than the right. Just curious if this is something any of you have encountered as you've lost weight and maybe sit/lay in positions you didn't before. Last night it …

  43. Started by BulletWithButterflyWings,

Im a year and a half out from my surgery and OMG it gets so so hard sometimes. Covid hasn't helped things either since I've been stuck at home around food and our LOVE-HATE relationship 24/7!! Cravings? CHECK! Stress? CHECK! Anxiety? CHECK! Unhealthy food (at least for me) stocked up?? DOUBLE CHECK! I just ordered more protein shakes/snacks to help alleviate some of this because i don't want to punish my husband or kids by taking away their treats. I know i haven't been making smart food choices lately so im just ashamed more than i can even describe. Can somebody enlighten me on "weight stalls" should I feel discouraged ? will the weight eventually start to leave again? How long does the stall usually sticks around? I had my sleeve Feb 2nd 2021 and here we are at Mar 10th and I lost 25lbs which I'm totally excited about of course, other people I know lost well over 30, 40lbs in their 1st month, I'm just a little ughhh at things now

I am 11 days post op and a bit of a hypochondriac. Sorry if this is TMI but I have been taking Bariatricfusion complete chewable multivitamins for about 5 days now and my poop is black for the first time. And when I drink water or protein shakes I don’t feel any restriction anymore. By that I mean It’s not as noticeable. I’m also on 40mg omeprazole which I open the capsule and put into applesauce. Also I’m a bit nauseous and there’s lots of gas rumbling in my stomach. My surgeons office is closed today and tommorow so I’m don’t know what to do. Is this normal?

  46. Ok so I’m normal times I would probably never be excited about these two options but I came up with a couple savory options for the liquid diet plan. Just two add ins for Greek yogurt, PB Fit and Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning mix. Both would be good fruit and veggie dips for later but for a bite or two of something different they worked for me. Also for later down the road French onion dip mix works great with Greek yogurt too but it has the minced onions so we can’t have it on liquid diet (actually the onion dip with Greek yogurt is better than sour cream to me). You can also add one packet Splenda if Greek yogurt is too sour for you and it helps. I tried two and it’s to…

I am five days post op and I have been having a difficult time getting my fluids in. I am just not thirsty so I forget to drink and then of course when I do remember it’s a slow and gradual process. I thought about setting alarms but it would be like all day. Does this get better?

I am looking for some advice on how to stop losing weight. I just want to maintain. I already increased my carbs, and portions. I never thought I would be asking how to STOP losing weight, LOL. I am just afraid I am looking too skinny now. My face is starting to look old, and drawn out. My collar bone is sticking out, and it doesn't look good.
