POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Hopefulin2021,

SO I’m about 6 almost 7 weeks post op and I really want a glass of red wine. Maybe like a Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon something dry, how bad would that be? Remember this is a judgement free zone! Lol ?

  2. Started by Akiisha,

Had my surgery February 17, 2021. I lost 40lb so far. The problem is, why is it getting harder for me to eat? Two bites of anything and im very full.

  3. Started by Stina22xo,

I had gastric sleeve surgery on Feb 16th and everything been great I lost 63 pounds so far, but for the last week I have no appetite for anything, it’s like I’m force feeding myself just to get my daily protein intake. Today was pretty horrible because I have no energy do to lack of eating but after two to three bites of anything I eat I don’t want it at all, I start to gag or feel extremely nauseous. Now about a week and a half ago I realized I hate eating do to you the mild discomfort (not pain) and don’t know if what I’m experiencing is really lack of appetite or just a mind thing. I want to know if anyone experienced the same ? And if so what did you do to f…

Has anyone found a change in their urine color? Mine has been dark orange since the surgery, even while in the hospital on IV. At first, I shrugged it off as just 'body's in shock,' etc., but I'm on Day 7 post-op now, and it's still dark. Of course, the obvious cause is dehydration. I've been drinking like a fiend...got in 60+ oz yesterday. Got 50+ oz the last three days. I don't "feel" dehydrated. I mentioned the color to both the surgeon and his nurse yesterday at my one-week post-op visit, as well as a nurse who called to do a follow-up, and everyone is saying the same thing. Drink, drink, drink. No pain, no other real symptoms, per se, but weird. Anyone else exp…

Hello and happy Mother’s Day to all you mommas out there! I have a question about cottage cheese. My dietician has recommended the cheeses and dairy I eat are fat-free or low fat. This hasn’t really bothered me until I tried low fat cottage cheese. The texture was grainy and horrendous. I can’t do it. Does anyone still eat full fat cottage cheese? I love it and it’s a good source of protein, I just can’t do the low fat version ?

  6. I had a gastric bypass in August. I've lost 105 pounds – which is not bad, I guess – but the weight loss has stalled, hardly changed at all since January. The fact is I have been eating too much. I don't dump and bad foods have crept in. Today I ate 4 packets of crisps and 5 small chocolate cakes. That's nowhere near the amount I used to eat of course, but its still really bad. My restriction has never been that strict, from quite early on I could eat relatively large portions for a bypasser. I am sabotaging myself and I feel like I have squandered the goldilocks period of the post-op where your body is most receptive to losing weight. I can't express how sad this ma…

  7. Started by BRittenhouse,

I was sleeved on 04/16 and have done GREAT until now. I can bend over or anything due to this horrible pain in my right side. It’s from my largest incision like INSIDE to my back. It hurts. Going to the doc tomorrow afternoon but any advice?

  8. The pre-op diet allowed 4 protein shakes a day..... but now I am only allowed 3 maximum??? 140 x 3 = 440 calories... Why is it necessary to go that low? Won’t that damage my metabolism?? I asked the nurse about it; all she said was, “they want you to lose weight.”. Seems like 800 calories would still cause weight loss. Can anyone explain this to me?

  9. What do you do for the first couple of weeks after surgery if you have a medication that is supposed to be taken with food?

  10. Started by Yaas BRAVE ONE,

HAS ANYONE HAVING TROUBLE SLEEPING AFTER WLS IM 5 WEEKS POST OP I SLEEP 2/3 hrs I’m up the rest of the day any SUGGESTIONS

  11. Started by MizzKay,

I am 1 week post op today and I can say im down almost 10 pounds. I am drinking the different protein premium drinks, sugar free Gatorade and water. Trust me when I say its a struggle at times getting 64 oz in if I dont start drinking by 6am. But what I hate so far is this nauseous feeling. Also I hate these muxed berry chewable vitamins by bariatric advantage. They are nasty as hell and makes me want to puke. The wild cherry chewable calcium citrate vitamins not too bad. I call myself getting bariatric specific so i want have to take alot of pills. Im thinking now I probably have should went with the flintstone vitamins.

  12. Started by Kat L,

Hi everyone! So I am feeling very discouraged today. I weighed myself today for the first time in a week. I thought the scale would show some weight loss because I noticed that my stomach looks more flat than the previous week. To my surprise, the scale shows that I've gained five pounds in one week I'm not taking in that many calories on the puree stage, im just surprised to gain weight so soon after surgery. The first two weeks I have lost a lot of weight. The day of my surgery almost four weeks ago I was 397lbs and I am now in my 360s. But I still have a lot to lose and I just have so many thoughts in my head now, like was this surgery worth it if im just going …

  13. I am now moving to soft foods. I made scrambled eggs and only ate 1.5 egg. I stopped when I felt full. One and a half hours later and a 30 minute walk, I still feel miserably full and have weird noises in my throat. What the heck is this? The noises is not a burp nor the prelude to vomiting. Just not sure.

  14. Started by Jnfinney,

Let me start this off by saying this: I made a mistake, learned from my mistake, I won't do it again.... so please don't judge or lecture me. OKAY, now. Last night I was exhausted and just wanted to go to bed, but I hadn't eaten supper yet. I heated up some leftover shrimp and veggies and I only heated up an appropriate amount for the stage I am at. I normally put my fork down for 2 minutes after every bite, but the food was going down fine and I was so stinking tired and I really slacked on putting my fork down like I should (huge mistake). About 10 minutes after I finished, I felt super sick and threw most of it up. I felt better after throwing it up. So, I won't …

  15. I guess I'm just venting. Before surgery, I would read people's comments/concerns of "what if it doesn't work for me? what if I can't lose?" and think... of course you're going to lose! You've had your stomach mostly or entirely removed and you're eating a small fraction of what you used to! But now, I get it... I'm about 5.5 weeks post op - in total I've lost almost 40 pounds, but that includes close to 20 pounds in the pre-op liquid diet. In the last 30 days I have only lost about 10 pounds. I never expected to lose 20 pounds a week (I was only about 100 pounds overweight going into surgery) but I did expect to lose more than this. I get more than my daily water …

  16. Started by Jnfinney,

Hi all. I had a gastric sleeve this past Monday 3/15 and have had a pretty uneventful recovery. My biggest complaint is how sore my largest incision is. If I twist, get up, or bend wrong, it feels like my incision is tearing open. I do wear a girdle almost all the time and when I am not wearing it I am icing that incision. I have absolutely no pain in any of my other incisions. In fact, the others are starting to itch. I stopped taking the dilaudid that was prescribed to me because I didn’t like how it made me feel loopy all day long and I’ve been using Tylenol is frequently as is safe. I can’t even sleep in my bed because of this dang incision, I have better luck sleepin…

How are all my Sept 2020 friends doing? My surgeon says I'm reaching his goal too quickly and I need to start bringing up my calories. I've lost 67pds since my surgery Sept 29th and am now 160. (His goal for me was 150).

  18. The two family members that know about my surgery are starting to make me feel uncomfortable. I just had my sleeve two months ago, and while i don’t really see a difference except in my collarbones, i can fit into things i never thought i could. And my shirt and pants size went down significantly. They keep telling me im “skinny” and “so small” in a nice way but I don’t see it at all! Especially in my upper body. I see it on the scale but not anywhere else.its starting to get annoying because they'll tell me that i'm getting small so much and when i start to believe them and feel a little confident they'll tell me that once i start exercising i’ll look better.which i am.…

Sleeved on 4/27. Down 10 lbs since then. However, I haven’t lost an ounce in 3 days. Did anyone else experience this?

  20. I'm probably having surgery in August and I'm wondering when it might be possible for me to take a trip to Hawaii to go swimming, snorkeling, and hiking. Would November be too soon? So, that's about 3 months post-op. Due to my work schedule and COVID, I haven't been able to take much time off this year and I'd like to take a vacation after surgery. If swimming, hiking, and snorkeling would be too much, are there other things that would be easier, like just walking around a city? I thought of Hawaii because it's in the US and going abroad might be hard due to COVID, plus it's warm in November. Would a long flight be really challenging? What are some things I'm not con…

Hi This is my first post. I am having gastric sleeve surgery on 5/18/21. I am reaching out to all who can give me any pointers. I would like to know which supplement work best for all of you? Also are any of you taking additional supplements for your hair and skin? I welcome anything you can think of since all of you have already started on this journey. Thank you in advance and keep going...each day gives us opportunities to achieve our goals.

Would love some BTDT success stories. I had a successful VSG 2.5 years ago and initially lost 70lbs. Sadly with the pandemic I have regained 25-30 lbs. I am crushed. I think my pouch is still small as I cannot eat large amounts of food but I’m afraid I’m addicted to sugar. Anyone able to get back on track after weight gain. ☹️

I know loose skin may be inevitable, so looking for ideas on how a workout routine may look after surgery to minimize it. 50% cardio, 50% weightlifting? What works for you?

  24. Started by green_eyes112,

Hello all! My surgery went well, not feeling any pain. I follow all directions for diet. I eat the 4oz of high protein puree food and not even 2 hours later, I am starving. I am drinking my water and getting the daily recommended 65 grams of protein. Is this normal? What to do to stop the hunger? I want to be successful in this.

Tomorrow is my 1 week post op and today I woke up feeling horrible. Flu like symptoms. Idk if I’m sick or if something could be wrong. I’m still able to drink and have no pain at all in my stomach but I do feel like I’ve gotten the flu. Anyway else experience this ?

  26. Started by Jdege13,

Hello! I had surgery on 4/22. Feeling great, but I cannot stand the thought of drinking another protein shake! So, I ordered wonton soup a couple time, and the broth is so delicious. My only question is, could I eat the wontons? They're so soft and mushy so I feel like if I chew it until it's almost gone, I should be ok. Thoughts?

  27. Started by Jnfinney,

I was shopping at my local grocery store yesterday and came across this yogurt. It seems to be a little thicker than dannon light & fit, but it tastes good. I was only able to find 3 flavors. Anybody else had this yogurt?

  28. Started by Hopefulin2021,

I’m almost 4 weeks post op and I have been introducing foods back into my system slowly and gradually. So far I have not had any issues besides getting full really quick but that is what’s expected. I still don’t have any hunger so eating is kind of like a chore lol. I wanted to know if protein bars are ok because I am still struggling to get in all my protein and I can’t eat that much and the shakes just don’t do it for me , I hate them. I know I should ask my nutritionist but first I wanted to hear from you. Thanks.

  30. I know stall threads are the most common type of post here, so I won’t delve too deep into my current situation other than I am 4 weeks out and have been exactly the same weight down to .2lbs for 8 days now. My question is: does anyone have a scientific answer as to why this happens? It appears that this would violate the law of thermodynamics completely. Are stalls a form of starvation mode, and if so, how are we to work past them given calories are barely increased on the “normal” section of the diet? I spoke to my NUT and was basically told there was nothing I could do but increase my cardio level. Considering I’m doing 30mins 7 days a week on a 650-750 calorie…

  31. I’m 15 days post roux en y and have been doing well and even running slowly, Ran 2 miles in less than 32 minutes yesterday including a hill! Last night I felt dehydrated and hungry and I’m now 15 days after surgery so I picked. Mushy meal of beef vegetable soup and I ate it. This morning had horrific bleeding stomach problems and had to miss work. Haven’t had this before- so I tried to eat eggs late afternoon and threw up. This is my first bad day. I am tolerating my medications, etc. but today my stomach is cramping and not very happy. also the weight loss stalled this week- not sure why. Today I finally dropped a pound. anyone have any comments?

  33. Just hit my last week and a half of the prilosec tablets and was told to start taking them every other day and then every 3 days. I took one two days ago, and skipped yesterday, am taking another one today (late, I usually take in the morning), I am feeling the slightest reflux right now off an on for about an hour, it is not really anything crazy and I have never experienced GERD or rarely (once a year? mild) reflux in my pre-surgery life. Is this just a natural recalibration from my body remembering to produce acid again or a sign that I might develop GERD? I am a worrier... so there is also that. haha

  34. Started by Asterisk,

I had vsg 17 days ago. I am feeling great and have been since a few days after my surgery, which scares me a little. I didn't experience much pain other than discomfort when getting up from sitting. I hit or surpassed my liquid and protein goals every day from day 1. Also, I have been hungry (not emotionally hungry). I'm on my 3rd week post op diet of pureed foods. I'm logging everything on My Fitness Pal. I am scared I'm eating too many calories. Approx how many calories/ macro % should be my goal at this stage? FYI, I'm 5' 3.5" and currently 276 lbs (313 lbs start). TIA for your help!

I had surgery on 4/22 - Today marks 1 week. I feel great so far. I do feel hungry ( I think ) but I'm getting through it. So, I want to start working out again - what have you all done when first starting out? Before surgery I lifted weights, but didn't do much cardio.

  36. Started by 2021NewMe,

Has anyone gotten the Covid Vaccine after surgery like weeks later? I am debating if to wait like at least a month or at least 3 weeks post op just because I am wondering if there is enough studies out there to know if it would cause any side effect because they are to close together. I am going to talk to my doctor but is there anyone that has gotten any of the vaccines>

  37. Started by kimix90,

Question, I am 3 and a half weeks out of surgery and I was wondering how much of my protein shake I should be doing at a time? I noticed that the first week or so it would take me all day to drink all 11oz of a shake. Now I think I can almost finish an entire shake in maybe over 30 min. Is this normal? I do not want to stretch my pouch but I do not feel like my stomach gets like overloaded when I drink the shake. Also, do we still need to sip?

Hi guys I had my op yesterday! And I went to bed tonight by 10pm as I was exhausted. I have woken up 3 hours later, dry throat & kind of hungry, the gas pains are so uncomfortable and I definitely feel nauseous. anyone else feel similar? I also have a headache from lack of hydration! please tell me it’s normal and the days get easier x

  39. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on April 21, and this first week after surgery I always wake up after 3 or 4 hours after I go to bed and feeling HUNGRY. Once I wake up I couldn't go back to sleep. I'm still on full liquid stage, I do hit my water and protein goal everyday through always sipping either water, protein shake, or fat-free broth. Did anyone experience? Will this annoying insomnia go away when I'm able to eat more actual food and up my calorie intake? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  40. Started by Prestonandme,

Before WLS, I was pre-diabetic and opted for the surgery largely because I was worried about developing diabetes. At first, post WLS, my BG readings were in the 70's and 80's, but six months after surgery, they returned to the 90's. I'm two years out and my fasting BG ranges from low 90's to about 104. This is almost where I was prior to surgery. My PCP and surgeon are not really too concerned, but I am disappointed that I returned quickly to high normal. And again, I am back to being worried about developing diabetes. Has anyone else returned to BG readings in the 90's? I'd love to especially hear from anyone who is years out from surgery.

What are some good tips or tactics to quit smoking pre-op?

  44. Started by Soon2bFit21,

I am currently 23 days post VSG and down almost 27lbs. I was a complete rockstar with my liquid diet protein, and water goals, but I started the pureed portion last Wed, I was shocked that I had absolutely zero pleasure or “this tastes good” after eating. I’ve been highly surprised by this and have looked up quite a few studies how Bariatric surgery alters hormones in the gut and brain that cause this satisfaction from meals. I was never a large overeater, but I did consider myself a Foodie. My tastebuds have also completely changed and things that I used to love such as coffee and certain protein shakes all taste horrible to me. Has anyone else experienced this? I know s…

My husband and I just planned a trip for about 5 and a half weeks out after my surgery. Assuming all goes well, I should be in the very beginning of the soft food stage. I have no idea what foods to bring/make that are decent nutritionally. Any easy camp food suggestions?

  46. Hi Bariatricpals, I have gathered thAt specialists have said 12-46 months. My specialist atrongly suggested 12 months but said that his patients have fallen prego earlier. How long did you wait to fall pregnant? How old were yo? Was it your first? Any difficulties?

I have lost 42 lbs, but still have no stamina. Today I went out to pick up trash with a group and had to quit after 1 1/2 hours. This was after several rest stops. Will this get better with time? I am doing most weights at the gym, will doing more cardio help? Any suggestions on what has worked for you? Thank you.

  48. Started by Maisey,

Lately I've seen a number of posts where people are questioning if they are too sensitive to comments and questions from others or what should be said in reply. Take this for what it's worth and it's only my opinion. YMMV. We CAN help how we feel. No feeling is automatic. What we tell ourselves in response to a situation (in this case a comment or question) creates our feelings. That self-talk results in feelings that lead to actions and then consequences, both positive and negative. If you want to change your feelings, you have to change what you tell yourself. The problem is that is hard to do. Our experiences color how we see events. Many of us have sp…

I am throwing up like every single day within 3-4 bites of my small meal. Thank God I am able to hold down the portein shakes and most cheeses otherwise I would be sunk. Anyone else experience this? Was there Anything that made it easier to hold food down? Any tips or tricks? All advice would be greatly appreciated!
