POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Fross,

Hello all, My wife is 4 days post op and has been having sharp cramping with most every sip she takes and sometimes randomly when she is walking. She says it is above her belly button just left (near the bottom of where the actual stomach would be). She managed 40oz of liquids with 57grams of protein yesterday, but is hating it today. She called her surgeon’s office and they said that it could be a few things and that as long as she wasn’t vomiting, running a fever, rapid heart rate, or any of the other signs of a leak, then it is nothing to be worried about and part of the healing. She also had a hiatal hernia repair. I’m worried about her and was w…

  2. Started by Lisa G,

I’m headed back into the office for the first time in 18 months and I am 60 pounds lighter. Not sure why I am so nervous but I guess I’m not sure what to say about my weight loss. No one at the office knows I had WLS. And you can’t really tell over zoom. Thoughts?

  3. Started by Lifestyle Changer,

I’m 8 days post op. I really haven’t had much pain. Over the weekend I’ve been coughing a lot due to my allergies. Yes I have a pillow across my stomach. I do hold it really tight while coughing. Between yesterday and this morning I’m feeling sharp pain on my right side. Just a little note. There was some complications with my gastric sleeve surgery 11/01. What supposed to be a 2 hour surgery ended up being a 4 hour surgery. Has anyone experienced this? PS: I have called and left message with my doctor.

The reason I am creating this thread is solely for support. I know by 1st hand how intimidating this process can be. With the mere thought of should ldl do it? I can tell you that I was not a walk in the ballpark. But I am so happy I took this decision. Today I am 5 days RNY AND hiatal hernia repair post-op. I feel fatigued, yet happy. Sore, yet excited. I can use many more adjectives. Please share and ask.

Today - almost 18 months out - I met my first goal: over 200 lbs lost, and joining the double digits club (in kg... of course ? ). 99 kilos today (218 lbs), lost 204 lbs from my top weight. Feeling good! Friends, it's a (life) long process, hang in there and have fun with it. Never mind the small ups and downs, look for the trends.

As I shrink, I'm getting skin tags in my armpits and they're incredibly painful. Did anyone else have this? How did you get rid of them? The dermatologists are all backed up for months and it is driving me BATTY.

I have been eating really bad for the last week and I’m now discouraged ? how can I clean my system and start over. I was sleeved April first and has only 54 lbs (I been at 245 for almost 2 months now) and I know I should be down more than that. I really wanna make this sleeve work the way it’s supposed to so I’m willing to start over but don’t know if I have messed it up

Hello All, I wanted to know if anyone has experienced what I’m going through. If so can you please share. im 3 weeks post op and the last 4-5 days I’ve been nauseous and just feel horrible. 2 nights ago I went to the ER to receive fluids. From my blood work they told me my liver levels were elevated and they wanted to do an ultrasound to check my gallbladder. They said it was fine. So I got 3 bags of fluids and they sent me home. For the past two days I keep sipping my fluids and I’m still throwing up, I’m weak, I have stomach cramps. This doesn’t feel right at all. I’m miserable and it’s hard to continue sipping with the nausea and all the gagging and puking. Any…

  11. I’ve had my surgery last year June and struggling mentally, fear of going back to the way I looked before… I’m constantly wondering if our bodies will gain weight faster then people who haven’t had the surgery do you know what I mean? even if we eat healthy will we gain weight faster or more because we have had the surgery?! Questions: once we have reached our goal weight do we follow a normal ‘healthy lifestyle’ and calorie intake for maintenance that you can set on my fitness pal? Or do I still only consume + - 1000 calories? I’m so confused because I do not want to my old self but I also can not lose more weight because I have gone under. PLEASE HELP.

  12. pictures are included so please be advised before hand I do include the surgery pictures just not to gross just the healed scars and all of what a fleur de lis tummy tuck looks like!!! ?‼️‼️ Well it will soon be my 2 year anniversary for the gastric sleeve and let me tell you what kinda of world wind it has been! To this day if I eat more then 4 ounces of steak I can’t eat anything for the rest of the day since it feels stuck but so far I have been able to eat regular foods. My breads still have to be toasted to not get the tummy gurgles. My stomach talks to everyone especially at night so if I am in a night class and I haven’t smacked at my usually 4 hours it’s like…

I had gastric sleeve surgery almost a month ago and I am on soft bariatric foods. The biggest struggle I’ve had is learning to eat slowly! I started working on before surgery but I feel like I am still eating too fast, by the time I feel full it’s already too late and I’ve taken a bite or two too many because I ate too fast and didn’t let my body signal that I was full. Any advice on slowing down when I eat?

Hey everyone I had the switch in September of 2020. I was 419 pounds and got to the lowest point on October 14 where I was 172 pounds. However in the last 3 weeks I am back to 179. I’m getting all in my head and trying to figure out if I’m doing something wrong or is there going to be weight gain regardless. I just figured I had more time. Any feedback would be super amazing.

  16. Hi everyone: I had my VSG on 9/16 and just had my one-month followup on Thursday. Over the weekend I started having really bad difficulties getting even small amounts of water down, and have only managed to eat about 5 tiny bites of food in 3 days. Additionally, the upper left part of my abdomen hurts incredibly bad and the pain has moved into my left shoulder--I have tried everything to deal with the pain, they have me on a list of gastrointestinal meds and tylenol and nothing is even coming close to making a dent in this pain. Making matters worse, my partner has gotten extremely frustrated with me because I should have been back to normal by now, and I ju…

Hi guys, so I’m nearly 5 years out from gastric bypass. Original weight was 364lb I went down to 153lbs and was scheduled in to have my excess skin removed. The operation was cancelled due to Covid (I’m in UK) but during lockdown I’ve developed really bad eating habits and gone back up to 196lb so again of 43lb :( I’m absolutely devastated. Enough is enough I need to get this weight off and look forward to my skin removal. I’ve been looking at the 10 day pouch reset and thought yes it’s just what I need to get my brain back thinking about good food and good portion sizes again. For me food is an addiction so it will be incredibly hard but I’m determined. I was just looki…

So lately I've noticed that when I move my arms, there's a "pulling" sensation in the back, like there's a marionette string that's caught or something. I haven't worked out my triceps at all. (Seriously, not at all.) It's never happened before, and I don't know if it's surgery-related (I'm almost 7 weeks out). Anyone else have this?

Dear All i have 3 weeks post op. Two Questions for the community: 1- I have started losing a lot of weight in the first two weeks and now have actually gained some even though my food intake is still in the liquid phase. Is this normal, read a lot and its apparently normal. 2- Water consumption, is it normal that fluids flow right through me, i am to gulp a lot of water circa a 500 ml bottle at once and not feel any pain. I just had a 200 ml Protein Shake, 7 oz , of liquid alongside 6 oz(170ml) of light very liquid Soup and about 400ml(13.5 oz)of water and nothing no pain no feeling of vomiting no pain....is that normal?

So, I suffer from PCOS. & for those who know what that is or have it, know that often times your period is super irregular or it just doesn’t come at all. For me, In order to get a period I either had to be on birth control, or progesterone. I never got periods on my own. September 21st 2021 I had surgery & October 11th, 2021 I got my 1st period on my own with out the assistance of pills. It lasted about 8 days. Stopped for a day, and came back. I’ve been spotting and bleeding off and on since. I know that the weight loss and my hormones have a lot to do with it. But i’m super irritable, emotional, and tired. I hate feeling like this. Luckily I have an appointment…

Hello all, I am 12 days post-op and everything went well with my surgery. I had a gastric bypass (lapband to gastric bypass revision to be precise). I am now on full liquids, but am not experiencing ANY feeling of constriction. I am so worried. Is this normal during the food stage I'm in? Now, I haven't tried chugging water or anything like that, but when drinking broth or smoothies, etc., I feel no constriction. On another note, I am experiencing what I think is "head hunger". I see advertisements for food and think that I want the food. However, I am pretty sure I do not feel any real hunger. How can I tell the difference? Thanks in advance for any advice…

My clinic has not had a dietitian/nutritionist on staff for months now (part of the Great Resignation, I guess). So they've been contracting with people, and I finally had had enough of it. She asked what I have been eating. I track religiously, down to the teaspoon of mustard (which probably isn't necessary, but...). So I told her. It came to about 850 calories. She absolutely lost her mind, whipped out a booklet, and told me I'm to be eating no more than 1/3 cup of food five times a day. I pointed out that I run or work out literally every day, that I am going back to a pretty physical outdoor job, that I'm losing weight steadily, and that eating this amount gives …

  24. Hello all, I was sleeved on Wednesday and I've heard that most people end up gaining weight during their hospital stay due to the extra IV fluids and swelling from the procedure. If this happened to you, how long did you feel it took before that extra weight had dropped and weighing yourself was useful? From a physical appearance standpoint, how long do you think you looked or felt swollen after? Thanks for your help! Trying to not psych myself out by weighing too early.

Hello I'm 3 weeks post op sleeve revision to bypass. I don't feel any restriction and am able to get in all my protein. On to pureed and yesterday I tried some pureed chili and have felt awful since. I am very nauseated. I don't think it's the chili anymore but perhaps I'm moving too quickly to pureed foods. With the sleeve, I could tell right away if I was full. With bypass, I'm not feeling restriction so it's difficult. I have been weighing and tracking everything. I'm hoping once I'm healed I will feel some restriction. I'm not getting in 64oz of fluid and I'm wondering if this could be the issue. Why are we so dehydrated after WLS? UGH. I love bypass as I had complic…

Had my surgery a few days ago. Am having a REALLY hard time consuming the liquids I need. I mostly have water or watered down minute made zero juice. Since my surgery. I've only hit an average of 15 oz of water each day! Anyone else having this issue? Tomorrow is my full liquid diet transition, since it'll be my 4th day post op, so, I'm hoping things will be better. I do have an issue with drinking my oz of water, but it being pretty uncomfortable for me. Feels like there's a little ball there that burns a little...kinda makes me scared to drink.

  27. I am 4.5 weeks post-op VSG. Recovery is going well and I'm progressing through my plan's stages with minimal difficulty. I'm now in "full" soft foods and getting a little more variety. Prior to today, I have been using small containers to portion out my food, eyeballing it based on the size of the container (e.g. a 4oz container, roughly 3/4 full gets logged as 3oz, and so on). I've been averaging about 3oz per meal comfortably, sometimes a bite more, sometimes a bite less. Given that my diet is a little more varied and I'm really focusing on getting as much protein from "real" foods as possible, I decided to start weighing my portions to be more accurate. For lunch t…

Hi everyone, I need some support and advice because I feel like I am failing so bad right now and I am so frustrated. I am almost three months post op. I lost 20lbs On my own before surgery. My surgeon was very strict and I only could have proteins shakes and water. I hated the protein shakes and ended up just having water a lot of the time. Especially after surgery, with a liquid diet I had mostly water. My surgeon wasn’t concerned. However, right after my surgery I lost a lot of weight really fast. The first month I lost about 30 pounds. It started slowing down the second month when I started eating especially. Second month I lost about 14 pounds. However about halfway …

I'm "only" losing two pounds a week. OMG I'm losing TWO pounds a week!! I don't feel like I look like I lost 70 pounds. Oh wow! My belt went from one notch to 5!! I feel the restriction. I don't feel the restriction. Maybe I'm eating too much and stretched out my pouch. I gained a half pound in one day...must be water. I gained a half pound in one day...I'm going to have to go back to my old clothes! I gained a half pound? I probably look exactly as I did day 1. W…

Hi there, I'm 2 weeks out from surgery and almost 20 lbs down. At the current rate, which will taper off, I will need some lounge wear in smaller sizes. I think that'll be easy to find. However, I'm allergic to Lycra fabric. I think it's got something related to latex in it. Anyway, some shape wear is made of Lycra. Lycra or not, as others may be curious, can anyone provide brands, cuts they like and maybe how often they've needed to change sizes? I'm 36 Female but please feel free any gender, again, others may be curious too. Thanks so much!

  34. I am 1 week today post sleeve and hernia repair. Everything was great until Sunday. I had a few sips of a chocolate protein shake and OMG the stomach noise could be heard 3,000 miles away!! And 10 mins later running to the bathroom. So ok I had a dumping episode no biggie. But it has been going on for 4 days! I have literally had 2 jello cups since Sunday and a lot of water and propel. I know TMI but this is so bad I have to sit in the tub for 15 min to be able to walk. My below parts are raw, bleeding, and very angry. I have ruined sheets, bath mats, and 8 pairs of undies. My stats are as follows highest 240… final weight before surgery was 210, during the clear liquid and full liquid stage I lost 7lbs… and was at 203. Since I started the puréed stage about 2 days ago… now I’m weighing 208….I’m following the diet…and only consuming about 400-450 calories a day with my 64oz of liquids a day. Has this happened to anybody!…. I’m freaking out.

  38. Hi all! I’m about 6 weeks until surgery and I’m trying to pre-plan Protein sources, maybe even meal prep to freeze. I have tried using GENEPRO. Bought some injury today to try. Just wondering what you all would recommend to get to have for my post op period? Also wondering about if anyone did meal prep to freeze for afterwards? Just can’t think of what might be good to buy or prep and freeze ahead of time. Thanks!

Hi all! I will hopefully be having my sleeve early November. This questions is for the moms (or very involved dads). After surgery, how do manage through the tiredness/irritability/nausea? If you are the one that runs the house, makes all the decisions, plays with the kids, cares for the kids, play dates, clean up, does ALL the things, how are you getting through that first month (or longer) post op? Where are you getting your energy since we can’t have caffeine (R.I.P. coffee, Diet Coke, chocolate)? HELP!

I'm almost 30 days shy of being 3 years post rny gastric bypass. I've recently started having right upper quadrant pain. It's not severe or acute, but it's uncomfortable and nearly constant. It is sort of under my ribs and it kind of wraps around to my back around my shoulder blade on the right side. I think it could be my gallbladder but food doesn't seem to make it worse. I'm wondering how common internal hernias are 3 years after surgery. Google is no help because everything I look up is geared towards licensed, well educated medical professionals, which I am not lol...and I should know better than to go to Google anyway. It's been going on for close to a week. Urgent …

So everything has gone great as far as my recovery , I’m in absolutely no pain, incisions healing great, I’ve already been cleared for soft foods and I was SOOO excited. I have tried eating ground beef with tomato sauce , eggs , mashed potato’s , and meatballs. I chew them all until it’s an applesauce consistency which honestly disgust me, I try to take dime size bites , I eat at the table and put my fork down after every bite and yet…. I am extremely picky about after tastes and fake sweeteners. I am not tolerating protein shakes that are milky or clear. Both premier protein which everyone seems to rave about. I am told that making your own is much more palatable. Haven't tried it yet. My surgeon is not forcing protein because it takes a few weeks to absolutely deplete and by then I will be on soft foods. I am really down and regretting the surgery. For right now. I feel like I am just too lazy to lose with diet and exercise, so I made myself miserable instead. I am only 3 days post op and I need to give myself time. My bigger fear is losing my hair, hence the protein worries. Ugh. Not a question or a s…

HW 303 SW 295 CW 259 I’m worried ?. I’m 3 weeks post op and I’m alarmed at the amount of food (phase 2 puréed stage ) I’m able to eat. I keep reading how most people can only have a few bites of food and drink and feel miserable. I on the other hand can eat two packets of oatmeal (full ? bowl) and 2 SF Jellos. Worried they didn’t cut our enough stomach or that this won’t work for me.

Just came out and had a bottle of Aquafina with the same taste so it’s just me. Is this a sign of a vitamin deficiency? I’m diligent about taking my multivitamins, calcium, and b12 daily.

  48. Started by TinDE,

I had my bypass about 7 weeks ago. I lost about 50 pounds leading up to surgery and 20 pounds after. I also choose not to tell people I had surgery. Now that it's noticeable, I've had people comment on my weight loss. Most people just say something like "You lost weight! You look great!" However....there are those people that want to know "How much weight did you lose?" I really don't want to give a number - for a lot of reasons. Usually I just say something like "a lot". Just wondering how other people respond to that question. Thanks!

I was sleeved on 9/7 and have had a phenomenal recovery! I have no issues with any food, reflux, pain etc. My mind is trying to play tricks on me and tell me that because I'm not suffering and can eat and drink without issue that maybe this isn't going to work for me. I do feel some restriction with food but not with fluids. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance that other people have recovered like I have and gone on to be successful in losing the weight. I have 70 pounds to get to my goal. TIA! ❤️
