POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Skinnyagain,

I am 6 days post op today. I am still having a burning/ ripping like pain from the large incision on the left side. It hurts the most when I try and get into the car, walk to far or when I am trying to sit or lay down. Does or has anyone else had this pain. It started on day 3 and has not eased up at all. In fact I would say it's worse. I did call the surgeon and he said that I might have pulled an internal stitch out, but good lord should it be this painful? If I am just sitting and not moving it does not hurt, but if I turn just the right way I am in tears.....any suggestions?

  2. Hey y'all, I am 2.5 weeks post op (band to sleeve). No real complications other than this: about 5 to 10 minutes after I finish eating; I get extremely tired and sleepy. That "spell" last about 10 minutes or so and then it's gone and I am just fine. Anyone else? Thank in advance!

  3. Started by 18kDays,

To those who are beyond immediate post-op. Is there anyone here who wishes you had never undergone bariatric surgery?

  4. Started by shawncotton,

  7. Started by linzcarr,

Hey y'all, I'm 6 days post op for the gastric sleeve. Ever since I came home from the hospital I have weighed 4 or 5 more pounds than my starting surgery weight. I don't understand why I have gained and not lost weight. I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong. Although, I do struggle getting my water and protein in. Other than that I feel pretty good. What is everyone else's experience? Is this normal or not?

  8. Started by JessM87,

I had my sleeve surgery on Wednesday. Don’t remember any of Wednesday, was throwing up and nauseous and in terrible pain Thursday. Friday I was feeling better so they sent me home. I kept complaining of waves of acid reflux, they kept telling me that’s normal. I am miserable. I’m taking the acid medicine they gave me, mylanta and Pepcid complete per doctor. Mylanta gives some relief but I still feel like I can take in much at all. I’m weak and drained and kind of second guessing myself. Never struggled with acid reflux before so why now? Is this part of the healing process? Any advice could be great.

  9. Started by shawncotton,

When i left hospital they said drink 10 of those little cup of liquids every hour it was hard to try and do ..i go to my post op and told her i can drink 10 in a hr ...she said i was only to do 4 a hr...i was pissed but luckly she said it wouldnt have streched my stomach cause its liquids .....but back on track with the 4 cups

  11. Started by Rey Rodriguez,

I’m 9 months post op from having a gastric sleeve and have lost over 100lbs. I'm 9lbs from my goal but I noticed my lower stomach and upper pelvic region really sticks out and I was wondering if it'll ever go away? I haven't been thin or at a healthy weight since I was a pre teen so I can't even remember if I've had this issue back then.

I'm almost a week post op and still have the pain in my chest and a Lil pain still in my abdomen, does this ever go away????

  13. Started by RaisnHL,

I’m in the beginning stages of surgery prep. but I’m a planner so I’ve been thinking… Does anyone have suggestions for post sleeve surgery necessities? Portion cups? Portion control plates? Best cup for sipping post surgery? Etc.

  14. Started by thinblueline,

Mornin everyone, is there a difference between carbs and net carbs because i have heard that about 3 months or so into post op you can start slowly introducing net carbs into your diet, i don't have a clue what this means, any help to help me better understand would be great, thank you. Coop

  15. Started by thinblueline,

I was called the other day and told i have an interview with the surgeon to see if i am a " good canidate " for surgery " seeing i have never been through this process before will i be approved , what are my chances i would hate to have him\her say Mr. Cooper I'm sorry but you don't qualify for surgery.

I know there has been lots of posts about stalls and here is mine. So for the last 8 weeks I have been bouncing around the same weight 71-72 kg today I even went up to 72.5 I am 8 months Post op and have lost 30% of my starting weight. Is this stall or has my body said nope not loosing any more weight? my original goal was 70kg but I still have quiet a bit of fat on my tummy so I would like to get that off and reset my goal to 60kg . I am a shift worker and don't get great sleep and I have found in the past this makes it very hard to loose weight. now I sound like I am making excuses again like I did pre surgery but prior to surgery when I took several weeks leave I alw…

So I had the sleeve done 3/14 and so far I have no issues. My stomach tolerates everything I introduce. I can intake liquids with ease and i have restriction with food. The day I arrived my weight was 311. Day of surgery I asked to weigh again I was 306. After surgery I weighed myself (I know I wasn’t supposed to I was 295). Today I’m 299.8 and I’m scared to be back over 300 lbs but why am I gaining weight? I’m not even eating enough food to be gaining anything. Is this normal? I’m so afraid of messing this up or failing but seeing the scale go up is sending my anxiety through the roof.

Hello, I had sleeve on 12/16 and my weight has not moved much and today I noticed it's back up 3lbs. I lost 13lbs on pre op but nothing after surgery. Is this normal? I'm feeling discouraged. I've been on full liquids. I get my protein in the form of shakes and yogurt. It's hard to get fluids in but I am doing that too. Any advice or help?

Hi, I am 13 days PO gastric bypass. For the first 12 days I could barely drink a little more than an oz in 15 mins. This morning for breakfast I was able to drink 11oz in 30 mins and not feel full. For lunch, I just had some soup and I was able to eat 9oz in 30 mins. I don’t feel “stuffed” but I am having heart palpations. Has anyone experienced this? is this normal ?

I am currently just over a year out from sleeve surgery. My goal was 160 but the lowest I got was 169. I was beginning to accept that weight but now it has been creeping up ever since and this morning I was 179. I have still been eating good, but more. Around 1200-1400 calories a day. I thought that would be okay… that would at least maintain the 169 but I’m starting to realize that I need to keep the calories even lower. Probably because I am not very active. Idk what I am looking for in terms of a response. I think I am just putting this out there to hold myself accountable. I hadn’t even updated my profile to reflect the gain because I am so ashamed. I have got to s…

  24. Seventeen years ago my wife had GBS and for a while she was doing awesome she was losing the weight following her program eating only what was allowed and exercising this went on for at least 2-3 years then it all hit her between the eyes she was sick all the time throwing up and dumping pretty much everything she was eating she couldn't even drink the protein shakes the food was going right through her, our marriage was on the brink because we could not do anything as a couple because she had to stay close to the bathroom just in case, so one day i said you need to see a doctor and her being so sick this went on for about 6 months so we made the appt and the doctor sai…

I am 6 months post op and since the very day of surgery through all the stages, everything I eat or drink hurts my stomach while I'm ingesting it. Not in the way that I am full. And I DO get my 64+ oz of water in daily. So the full and dehydrated theories are out the window. Anyone else deal with this?

Has anyone been prescribed or taken these Citrus Calcium with D calcium pills? The label says compare to Citracal Petites. Have any of you taken those? I started the tablet yesterday but today I had a different experience. This afternoon, I felt so full when I shouldn’t have. The only change I’ve made - aside from the obvious- is the introduction of this wanna be petite Vitamin. It’s not petite. It’s larger than my idea of petite, anyway. I googled the side effects and it says decreased appetite as a side effect. I think that’s a thing for me. The VA sent me like 10 bottles of this at once. So buckle up, I guess. I have been eating the chews before the mammoth peti…

I've had a very smooth post-op. No pain, no nausea, no throwing up (except once when I made myself throw up) and could tolerate all liquids and puree or mushy food that I tried. In the last two weeks I started with a deep gnawing empty feeling, almost like hunger but not quite. It was almost constant. I also had an almost constant feeling of slight nausea, especially when drinking Water or flavored water (not my Protein shakes). When I would have my Protein shake I would get some relief from both the nausea and gnawing feeling. I'm guessing ulcer and I remembered the beginning of it coincided with my taking Advil (3 is my normal dose) 2 days in a row on an empty s…

  28. Hi all. I take 300 mg of lamotrigine/Lamictal every day as a mood stabilizer. It has literally changed my life. I was reading today that lamotrigine is one of the "do not use" post-surgery. I will of course call my doctor and find out what he says, but I also thought I would check on here. Have others used Lamictal/lamotrigine post-surgery and had problems? Or had no problems? I am (obviously) very worried about this given the success I've had with the medication - I can't imagine life without it.... Input is most appreciated. Thanks!

i have been craving chicken nuggets for weeks. im currently almost 4 weeks from my surgery date and right now i can have a lot of different things but still no meat. I know this is technically cheating but would I be able to have a vegan chicken nugget (cooked in air fryer)? Im allowed toast (so technically bread crumbs) and I can have cooked veggies.... so basically I would be able to right? I am also allowed sauces. Its almost my "time" of the month so my cravings are STRONG

Hey everyone I was wondering how long everyone had pain at the site where they took the part of your stomach out. I’m now 3 weeks out and still having very sharp pain. I still cannot bend down or anything. Just hoping it will feel better soon. The doctor said it’s normal but I just want others opinions.

What are you all eating one plus year out and how many calories are you consuming. i had my year evaluation (I went from 330 pounds to 180 pounds) and she was pleased with my progress (apparently I surpassed the others in my group with excess weight lost which is a great feeling!) however she seemed a bit upset over the quantities of food I am eating. she said I should be getting 1,700 calories a day. I just don’t see how that’s possible! My restriction is still very much a thing and I just can’t eat that much. I compromised by telling her I would eat breakfast (I usually just have a nonfat coffee and that fills me up), she told me to introduce tha…

So I have gotten different answers from my doctor's office (nutritionist, doctor, post-surgery team, etc.). I am meal prepping on the weekends and I portion my food into small 1/4 cup portion cups, that are typically used for dressings and condiments (I LOVE THESE THINGS!). Anyway, I noticed that at times, I can eat 2 of these within an hour (making it 1/2 cup), while other times I really can only have one of them before I feel restriction. I am so worried about damaging my stomach or busting a suture. What amounts of food have you guys been able to tolerate at 1 month post op? Also, bear in mind that my doctor's office moved me from liquid to pureed after week 1... …

  33. So I believe tummy fat usually does take time to lose. I have noticed losing weight overall from most areas of the body and of course tummy as well. But it seems more is coming from areas than tummy. Abdominal fat is a resistive for sure. What can be done to speed it up? Or will it the last one on the weight lost track?

Hey everyone. I'm new here! I had my surgery on March 17th. I consider myself lucky in that I haven't had the nausea everyone talk about, but what I do have is relentless hunger. I have been doing 3 shakes a day, 64 oz of water, even yogurt, but I feel like the removed my stomach and inserted a tapeworm! I have been waking up in the middle of the night with a growling stomach. I also find myself tiring easily and getting winded on brisk walks while talking. (I've been a fit fat person for some time, so this has been troubling) Any ideas or suggestions on how to get these hunger pangs to go away? ?

  36. I tried to be a big dog-found out I was still just a pup! I am about 10 weeks post-op. I was out and about this weekend, and stopped at a stir-fry restaurant. I did order a lot of protein, but it (of course) comes with rice and you have to have baby corn, water chestnuts, etc., etc.. I ate a little, it was so good, ate another bite. (Can you see what coming??) By the time I left, I was sweating, and it's a 30 minute ride home. I was fortunate I had a plastic shopping bag... It was the first time I got the foamies. I would drive a little, then find a place where I could pull over and retch til my toes curled up.. Go a little further...repeat... Back to soft food, and no …

I’m about 8 weeks post op - and while the first few weeks were great, I have been struggling. The mornings are the worst. I feel icky every morning with nauseous tendencies. When I eat any kind of meet I throw it up. For the last week my stomach has been sore. I’m ready to feel normal again. Did anyone else experience anything like this. I am going to the doctor today so hopefully will have some answers. I just really want to hear from the others of you and see what your experience was. I struggle taking any pills too.

  43. OMG I am 8 weeks post op and 22 pounds down and I’m so confused. Shouldn’t I have lost more weight by now? I’ve been exercising and working with a personal trainer everyday for the last 3 weeks. I’m really unsure if I’ve stalled or if the sleeve has failed or if I’m right on track. So frustrating. Hi everyone, Pleasure to cyber meet you all. So I got the Single incision sleeve 2/26. My surgeon is in Cali I'm in NY. Today was probably the most pain ive felt. I've also been in pain due to a supposed spasm by my neck that I had for 5 days. Which made it difficult to get up with my head and neck feeling like a bolder. So now I fear I have a Hernia or something. I'm also out of pain meds so can't tell the difference between normal and not normal. The ER told me to take 600 tylnol as they can't really prescribe me anything due to the surgery. Back to today, now my incision sites feel on fire and around the area hurts by my wound looks fine and …

  50. Hello! I’ve had my sleeve around 6 months ago and I’m the past 2 months I’ve been waking up with horrible breath and I spit out yellow saliva. I thought it might be a dental issue so I had my teeth cleaned but the problem is still there. Could it be from acid reflux? Or could it be bike coming up while I sleep? Is that normal? It just happens in the morning right when I wake up then throughout the day there isn’t yellow saliva but my breath is horrible.
