POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. I have been so focused on hitting my protein goals that I completely forgot that once I hit it (2 shakes and a protein water) I can drink what I want. So my husband went to the store and got me sugar free tea, sugar free fruit juice, gatorade zero, and as a surprise, brought me a matcha lemonade from Starbucks. It makes it SO much easier to hit your fluid goals when you're drinking stuff you like and want and not all the same stuff every day. I know this is common sense to most people, but it honestly never occurred to me. The last 2 days I have been hitting my protein goals but struggling with my fluids. I think this is really gonna help.

  2. 7 days post op today im still kinda lazy feeling im having a crazy insomnia thing going on and also i had to advance my diet my self because i was getting dehydrated and weak allloot im also a nurse and i know the risks and have spoken with my doctor about this dont worry im not doing anything crazy just pureed egg salad and cream of wheat

  4. Hi! I know I'm "new" to all of this. I'm 13 days post op. The first 5 days after surgery, I had lost 7.5 lbs. By the 7 day mark, I had hit a 9 lb weight loss. I was SO EXCITED so I figured I'd weigh myself maybe every 4 days after the 7 day mark. I was REALLY looking forward to my progress, and I was so shocked by the original fast weight loss I just couldn't help myself. Keep in mind -- I'm STILL on the all liquid diet. Well, the last 6 days, I have lost 0 lbs. ZERO! I' got down to 244.0 lbs, then days later 244.5 lbs and today 245.4 lbs. So technically speaking I've actually gained 0.9 lb. HOW?! Can someone help explain? Is this normal? I'm following all the r…

Hi everyone. I am exactly 1 week post op today and I feel like I didn't even have surgery because I'm still waking up with the same hunger pains I had before surgery. I'm hungry all day. Can anyone give me some advice as to what to do to calm this hunger? I'm still on the liquid diet so it's protein shakes, pudding, jello, yogurt, and water all day long... I'm so hungry all day that I'm tempted to eat real food, but I refuse to cheat. Any advice would help. Thanks.

So when I had my surgery, I was able to see pics of the inside of my stomach as well as the part that was removed after the surgery. I just logged into my patient portal and I was able to read the surgery notes and pathology notes. The part of my stomach they removed was 8 1/2 inches long and 2 inches wide. A regular, empty stomach is about 12 inches long by 6 inches wide and can hold up to a quart of food. That means my remaining stomach is only 3 1/2 inches long and 4 inches wide and can hold 3 ounces lol Very, very neat...

I had gastric by-pass on 3/23/2022. The week after surgery I had the worst gout flare up in my knees. I usually have issues in my ankles but since the surgery every other week I have a gout flare up in one knee or the other or one ankle or the other. I have been on Allpurinol and Colchicine but nothing seems to help. I was wondering if anyone else has been having the same issues and if so were you able to find any type of relief? It is to the point I have had to have fluid drawn off my knees and steriod shots which is a first for me.

Hi everyone. Hope all is well and everyone is well on their way to looking and feeling great. So I'm 5 days PO and I've been checking my sugars everyday. They are measuring high (highest has been 194). This morning my sugar was at 166. Has anyone experienced high sugar levels after gastric sleeve surgery? Any advice? I reached out to my doc's office and I'm currently waiting for a call back, but just wondering if anyone has had this issue.

I am two days out and when I take a sip of water I get a sharp pain coming up from my solar plexus area and into my chest. It is sharp and horrible. Is this normal? Is it just gas? Also-anyone else gurgle in their throat when they drink?

It is 7.20 am here and I am ready to go into hospital to have my RNY done at midday. I did so much better on two week liquid diet than I thought I would. I am proud of myself for this. Mostly packed and will be at the hospital by lunch time. I had decided to only tell 2 people about it irl but I outed myself accidentally by posting details on my facebook timeline. That has kinda taken the shine off today. Hopefully I will be able to laugh at some stage but not yet. Looking forward to the future. One with hope.

Had my RNY on March 22, 2022, very happy where I’m at in over a month and a half, I’ve lost 60lbs, and now able to wear shorts I haven’t worn for 6 years. Thank god I saved them haha. anyways, my question is is it normal to just not feel hungry, I get my protein and fluids in everyday as well as my vitamins but I have to force my self to eat something. Been on soft foods for 2 weeks and have 4 weeks to go but I just do not feel hungry at all. What can I do? Is it normal?

  13. Started by SleeveToBypass2023,

So today is 4 days post op and for the first time, I had some pretty gnarly nausea. Never had any before now, and on top of that, my stomach was hurting BAD. Like bad bad. It took me 2 1/2 hours to take 7 pills, and it was excruciating with each pill. No fever, no chills, no throwing up, no feeling faint. Just this nonsense with my stomach. Now I have to take my pills again at night, and I have 7 again, and I'm literally shaking with anxiety and fear because of how bad it was this morning. Shouldn't things be easing up by now and not getting worse?????

Hello, 5 days PO from sleeve and I ate the broth from chili (no meat beans etc) just the liquid. I feel fine. I went out to eat with family and that’s all they had soup wise. Will I be okay? Thanks!!

  15. Hi everybody! I had my surgery (Gastric sleeve) on 01/08/18. Everything went well, I was 245 lb and i went down to 128 lb. I was feeling so good, so healthy, so happy.... I got married and my life was perfectly fine! Last year, in October I found out I was pregnant... Unfortunately on December i had a miscarriage. During my short pregnancy I had to be fully in bed. I gained 30 pounds! and now I can't go back to my normal weight. I am feeling so depressed, my doctor said that he can't help me because he only help with surgeries. so, I don't know what I can do! I am eating healthy, working out... drinking water.... Can someone help me?…

Okay so I am over a year out now. I was warned by the nurse practitioner that statistically people with bipolar disorder do not always lose as much weight so I made My goal a little higher so I would not be dissapointed. My first goal was 180. Well I reached that and was still losing so I set it to 160. I got down to 169 rather quickly and I stayed there for months and then I started gaining. I gained to 179 and Now I have been stuck right around this weight for months. At this point I honestly don’t see myself getting back to 169, never mind 160. My hunger hormone is back and it will not allow me to reduce my calories anymore. I have decided that If I can actually main…

Hi there! So leading up to surgery, I got hooked on weekly trips to a local infrared sauna. I really enjoy it as a peaceful time to relax and maybe even reap some health/physical benefits. I paused my membership before surgery to focus on bigger things, but my membership resumes on 5/10, which will be 20 days out from my VSG. My incisions look good; surgical glue has completely flaked off of one! Anyway! How soon do you think is too soon to get back into the sauna? Anyone else frequent infrared saunas??? I really want to get back but I don’t want to do any damage. (I have asked my doctor before and he said he doesn’t know much about them. I’ve been cleared to…

Hello, sleeved 4 days ago. I have awful pain on the right large incision. They said this is where they pulled the stomach out. I can’t bend over to tie my shoes, put socks on, get up without pain etc. it literally feels like the insides of me are going to come apart. I called the dr and they said it’s normal. But I don’t see as many people complaining about it like I am. All the pain meds and heating pad is not helping me. I go back to work in 2 days and I’m so nervous. Also I have anxiety that I have a leak.. but everyone says that’s near impossible but I think the worst. Anyone out there having the same issues? Incisions are not black and blue or have puss or drainage c…

I feel my surgeon has abandoned me. My next visit with her isn’t until 3 months post-op. My only goals we set are to drink 64oz of liquids and 60 grams of protein daily. She said MOST of my excess weight will be lost in the first 6 months, so to stay focus and take advantage of the surgery. I don’t know how much MOST of my excess weight is, so I don’t know if I’m losing at the correct rate. I don’t know if I am eating too much or too little. I’m just listening to my body. If I’m hungry, I eat. If I am full. I stop. The only food restrictions I have are raw veggies and steak. Other than that, she told me to “listen to my body and if it hurts, stop and try again at a l…

  23. I have tickets to the opera on May 29 which is just two weeks post-op. I’m wondering if I should exchange/refund them. The flyer for this opera just arrived in today’s mail and it looks so beautiful that I would hate to miss it. Will I be ok taking the train and sitting for a long while? Would that be pushing myself too much? Does anyone have similar going out after surgery stories that you can share?

Hi everyone! My surgery is projected to be in the first couple weeks of July (my last pre-op appointment is June 6th, and the coordinator of my bariatric center said the surgery is usually around a month later, barring limited issues with insurance). I currently live in Florida and am considering flying to Pittsburgh the week of Labor Day to attend a football game of my undergrad alma mater with friends and visit family. However, I’m hesitant to book the trip because I don’t know how I’ll feel 6-7 weeks after surgery. I know everyone is different but I would love to hear from you all about your recovery experiences. 25. Hi! So I had gastric bypass on 4/26 and found out after surgery that my surgeon removed part of my stomach like they do with the VSG. He said it was to remove the ghrelin hormone. Has anyone else had this done? He said it wasn’t a duodenal switch but gastric bypass.

Hey everyone. I was sleeved 2 days ago (4/25/22) and I was a SDS so I went home Monday afternoon. They told me to take shots of 1oz every 15 minutes. Anyways I had to go back Tuesday for fluids and a check up. She wanted me to start protein shakes that day. Goal is 60-80 protein and 65oz of liquids. Shakes can count as liquid on my plan. Anyways is it normal I can drink 2 shakes a day & plus 2 waters and a 20oz Gatorade within one day only 2 days post op? I’m scared of leaking or something but when I do drink I take it slow and sip for the most part but I still get burps after. Is this normal?

I'm a day shy of 3.5 wks post op (sleeved 5/9). My "puréed" diet has consisted of a variety of things - egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, salmon salad, poached egg, carrot curry puree Soup, Dahl with homemade Raita, Refried Beans with cheese, miso soup with tofu (no seaweed), etc. I've not had any tummy problems - especially if I eat slow and listen to my new tummy's satiety signals. I'm supposed to move on to soft foods next week (but sort of already doing that I guess). I'm interested in trying edamame (chewed well) and the meat from artichoke leaves. Thoughts?

Also have you done anything extra to take care of the scars so they can subside earlier and better? Hope to hear from the experienced folks here! ?

I’ve only lost between 39-41 in total including pre op. HW 256, SW 244, CW 215-217. I had a stall at 6 weeks and also gained 2 pds. I went from 215 to 217. Since then I have been losing and gaining the same 2 pounds. I do get my protein in but struggle with water intake. I average about 50 oz a day. My dr put my calories at 800-1000 a day, protein at above 80. Nut told me not to be concerned about fat or carbs at this point. I just started to work out so no muscle gain at this point. I am very frustrated. Anyone have a similar issue or any advice to give ?????

I take it to mean with this particular brand (in the middle column) take 2 of the chewables plus 2 calcium citrate chews (and each chew has to be 500 mg) and the B12 is already included or do I need to find a B12 vitamin? What should be our maximum grams of sugar per day? The reason I am asking is that many foods, such as yoghurt and Protein bars, offer the "correct" number of caloris (300 or less) but 20g of sugar. The 20g seems awfully high. So how many grams of sugar should be the limit for a meal and for an entire day? Thanks in advance for any insights.

Xylitol is a natural Sweetener and many Keto folks use it as stage substitute. But for some, it acts like a laxative and not tolerable. I am one such person. A spoon of xylitol is all is takes for my inside to start running. I was super constipated and my daily docusate didn't help. I tried miralax but it ended up giving me cramps and felt not so good. So decided to try xylitol and bam it did the trick. I keep using fiber supplement, do eat veggies/fruits (mostly pineapple) but milk/yogurt/cheese high protein diet does it for me and I continue getting constipated. I don't know what else I can do to have normal bowel movements since I do all I can along wit…

  45. I made some very bad decisions and I'm unsure what to do next. My surgery was a year ago and I haven't really experienced any dumping since then. That false sense of security made me get extremely irresponsible this week. On Thursday night, I had a plate of tortilla chips, salsa, nacho cheese, and about an hour later, a shot of vodka. To make matters worse, I hadn't had much water that day. Friday, morning, I felt mostly okay but I had a dull ache on the left side of my groin. I was afraid it could be a kidney stone, so I bought a gallon of diet green tea around 7 PM and drank the entire thing in about four hours. At about 10 PM, I started having diarrhea and (…

Good Morning -I have been reading all of the questions and answers and a lot of them helped, first time posting cause I need some help. Four weeks post-op, down 39 lbs. The constipation hit me. About 8 hours running back and forth one night, finally passed at 1:15 in morning. Now in lots of pain. Phoned my doctor, they have me on 2 pills twice a day, stool softener, 1 dose Miralax and one dose Milk of Magnesia. Now I can't stay out of bathroom. I think this is too much laxatives. What is everyone on daily that helps stay regular. Sorry for the TMI.

Does anybody know what the "expected weight loss percentage" is for immediately after surgery and how the weight loss curves. I guess I'm trying to set up my predictable timeline. For example, it's been 2 weeks since surgery. I lost 10.4 lbs. That is 5.36% My nutritionist said my expected weight loss is 50-60 lbs in 6 months based on my metabolic test and a 600 Kcal/day diet. My resting energy expenditure test reported that I am using 16556vKcal/day. I saw another physician video stating that the curve is greatest in the first 3 months. Then the next 9 months you would expect to lose the same amount as you lost in the first 3 months. Simply, I want t…

I have a question. My sleeve surgery was on March 31st (2022) On April 4th I started eating small amounts of vegetable soup to get my bowels moving. It didn't bother my stomach one bit. Next day...I tried cottage cheese. Yesterday I had a salad with chicken. No problem! I'm doing less than 500 calories a day BUT I'VE only lost 7 lbs since surgery!!!!!!!!! Do I need to go back on liquid diet? What am I doing wrong?
