POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by nymisc,

I lost a lot of weight quickly but this week I am gaining. I am not eating a lot but the scale is moving up. I remember seeing a lot of people around week three hit a stall, but not a gain necessarily. I am wondering if this is because I am eating soups and I have sodium retention. How was your third week? Were you able to get it moving again, if so any tips?

I’m over a year out but suddenly I’ve noticed a sensitivity to caffeine and salt. My heart rate goes crazy. Anyone else?

  4. Started by Candigrl1,

This Thursday is my six month follow up with the surgeon who did my bypass. Because my health plan refers out this will be the last time I see her, then my plan takes over. I'm at a loss on what to ask her. Are there any questions I should be asking her about at this point? Thanks

  5. A year ago, I did gastric sleeve. My weight was originally 230 pounds. Now, it's 117 pounds. I feel pretty ecstatic that my weight has gone down. However, that's where the happy list ends. I'm concerned with the direction my life is heading after the surgery. I suffer from the following problems: Chronic constipation. I must take Dulcolax laxative every day for relief. Miralax powder doesn't work. My GI doctor performed a colonoscopy, but nothing malign was found. It's debilitating not to be able to get the relief I desperately need, and to feel dependent on medications when I thought this would be temporary. Increased appetite. It's becoming more diffi…

Greetings everyone, I just got a call that True Results will be going out of business, this came as a huge disappointment to me because the location I schedule my fills at is near my work. Now I have to go back to the surgical center where I had my procedure done and my doctor only does fills one day a week. I don't know how well this is going to go, I can't take off work to get maintenance once a month - here in Houston, if it's not near you then it's far away. Anyway, I just thought I would share this with any other TR patients who had not yet gotten the phone call.

  7. Hi, I wanted to make a suggestion for those looking for a good way to exercise post-surgery. For those thinking of starting a jogging regimen but hate the thought of actually running, I strongly recommend a program called c25k, which is short for Couch to 5K. The idea is that by following this program, you go from sitting on your couch doing nothing to running a full 5K (3.1 miles) in 9 weeks. I've always hated running but doing something like a 5K was always on my bucket list, so I decided to give it a try. I've tried the c25k program in the past (years ago) with some decent results, but never stuck with it. So now that I've lost some decent weight post-surg…

I noticed that even though I started pureed today and all is well, I am super tired every time I walk around. Is this normal? When did you see it start to go away?

  9. Started by raspberrylime,

I'm 14 days post op and believe I am in the middle of my first dumping episode ? I drank my morning protein shake too fast and 15 minutes later my heart started racing, I'm dizzy, I felt like I needed to throw up, and my whole body got hot. I'm sitting on the bathroom floor right now waiting to throw up but nothing is happening. How long does this usually last? Lesson learned!

Hello, I had gastric sleeve 10/17/22 and I’m feeling defeated. Let me start off by saying I have been preparing myself for this surgery for almost a year. I started my pre op diet 4 weeks before my surgery and lost 20lbs, then had a 2 day liquid diet. My sw was 286.8 and day of surgery it was 268.8. my surgery went great and when I got home I weighed 269.0 but I figured that I was swollen and still really gassy from surgery. that’s not my problem though. I’m SO hungry. My post op diet consists of 1 week clear liquid, 1 week of thicker liquids, then onto purée. Well pretty much since I got home I’ve been eating creamy soups as I just couldn’t tolerate t…

  11. Started by foxfireari826,

So I had the surgery almost 6 weeks ago, I've lost about 35 pounds since the surgery but I've noticed something about how food works with my body. Every time I try to eat meat I end up throwing it up and it doesn't matter what type. I've had chicken, fish, pork (ham but not a lot like.. a bite cuz I got sick like instantly after I tried it) even beef and turkey. No matter what meat I try I get so sick even eggs aren't safe. Has anyone else had this happen to you? It's driving me crazy because everyone else seems to be fine but I can't even keep it down not to mention when I do manage to I can't drink water for hours after without throwing up the water too. Is that somethi…

  12. Hi! I’m just wondering if anyone has struggled the way I am. I had surgery October 12. I’ve not been able to stomach anything but water since. I tried choking down protein shakes, tried protein waters, protein shots. I’m now supposed to be eating six small meals per day, which can be yogurt, pudding, blended cottage cheese, or cream soups. I can’t even finish one and I’m sick for the rest of the day. Last week I saw my surgeon and was told I have thrush, post nasal drip, and was dehydrated. Was given mucinex d, diflucan, and sent to the hospital for fluids. I felt better but still unable to eat anything. Phenergan and zofran are not helping me. I’m so frust…

  13. Really having a hard time not falling back into my old way of thinking and eating (or not eating, as it were). My husband pointed out today that I'm restricting again. He said he noticed it Friday and all through the weekend. I've been in a lot of pain because I pulled 2 muscles in my back, have had a lot of stress the last week, and instead of going to over eating like I used to, I fell back into my new "old" habit of restricting. I was worrying I would overeat, and I guess I went right back into my new "fall back" habit of just not eating much of anything. My husband made notes on what he saw me eating and I had 450 calories and 18 carbs on Friday, 413 calories and…

I am a little over 3 weeks out of the sleeve and I am worried that my serving sizes are two big. Should I be able to eat two over easy eggs this early without an issue? I am losing weight. I just don't want to make myself sick. I am in the soft food stage.

  15. Started by Sd14810,

I feel absolutely horrible, and I'm honestly wishing I'd have never gone threw with this surgery, and I never thought I'd say that because I was so excited to finally be able to have it done.... I had sleve surgery on 9/26 at around 10am , I was relised on the 27th by noon, I live 115 mile from the facility I had my surgery at... I've been having some issues getting enough fluid and have been in contact with my beriatric team,... and I was told because I haven't been able to take in more then 30-35 oz a day, and nothing els they wanted me to go to the er/ urgent care to get fluids.... The urgent care here said they cannot do just fluids I would need to go to the ER, so…

  16. I'm really ready for my hair to stop shedding!!! I'm doing all the things I'm supposed to, and I know it's normal and will eventually stop. But I really wish it would hurry up and get to it. I'm 5 1/2 months post op, and I started shedding around 3 months out, so I know I still have a ways to go. But OMG my hair just gets EVERYWHERE!!! Couch, bed, pillows, shower, floor, my clothes, EVERYWHERE. So, so annoying. My NP at the surgeon's office said I've lost so much weight in such a short amount of time that she's not surprised that I'm shedding like crazy. I know that, and I know it'll stop. But honestly, I'm shocked I'm not bald!!! Ugh....

  17. Started by raspberrylime,

I am 3 days post-op sleeve (also had my gallbladder removed and a hiatal hernia repaired) and I am getting random stomach spasms that last like 5 seconds. They make my whole abdomen tense and take my breath away for a few seconds. I am going to call the surgeon today but I'm curious if this is a typical pain after vsg? The spasms so far are the worst part of my healing experience.

Hi I have some questions I'm two months out surgery from what my home scale is saying I'm down to 219 my original weight was 290 but before surgery was 274 however I wanted to know if I should be concerned I haven't taken my vitamins in about a month and I don't eat I would eat a sugar free fruit cup on a good day and drink liquid I want to know if this is normal and last time I went to the hospital they said mypotassium was low. I have so many questions so I wondered if anyone experienced this before

  19. Started by SleeveToBypass2023,

I noticed quite a few people don't want to admit to having WLS, and I totally get it. But when hubby and I go to a restaurant, I always tell the server that I had gastric sleeve surgery and I will definitely need to make a couple of substitutions on my meal and I will need a to-go box (any time we go out to eat, my meal is good for that night and at least 1, sometimes 2, more). I've had a few ask questions about it, and they all have always congratulated me and were more than happy to accommodate my needs for the substitution (typically I swap out potatoes and/or rice for a side salad or extra veggies). I'm always proud to tell them I had the surgery, and I usually includ…

  22. Started by AmbiiNicole,

Hi everyone, So just want some feedback as I weighed in today and started pureed food 1 week ago. I have 6.2lbs back of the 11lbs I lost the first 2 weeks. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? As anyone else experienced this?

  23. Started by Mia may,

I’m having pain on my left side and middle. I could only get in to see my doctor next Monday but for now it’s driving me crazy with worry. I can push on it and it feels tender/sore. I wonder if I overdid it here recently working out. I just don’t know but surely this isn’t normal.

  24. Am I the only lunatic who shoves blankets/pillows/etc. under my clothes to show how much smaller I am than I used to be? Exhibit A: a pair of pants that I could not fit into/could barely fit into for at least a month after surgery, now with room for an entire fluffy blanket...might be time for some new jeans...

So my blood pressure is ranging with the top number in the 90's and bottom number in the 60's. My surgeon isn't worried since I have no other symptoms but my "in nursing school" hubby doesn't like it at all. He's worried I'm going to pass out or something. Anyone else experience a drop in BP when they lost weight? I'm down 89lbs.i never had high BP to begin with. I used to joke with my doctor that if I came in and it was high get me to the ER ASAP because something is horribly wrong. Just wondering.

  28. Started by TheLosingGame,

I had a feeling this would happen! Somehow made it the entire pandemic without covid and tested positive while in recovery from surgery. I had no idea I had it the first 2 days bc I thought i was dealing with symptoms of dehydration and struggling with hitting my protein goals for a couple days. Turns out it’s covid. anybody gone through the same? have any tips on getting through this when you already feel a bit tired and weak? I’ve already called my doctor and got advised on which medicines/relief I may take that won’t interfere with my post-op medicine regime

  29. Started by Darkangel505,

Hi all. So I am getting very close to getting my pre-op appointment scheduled and then a surgery date, but problem is I am going on a vacation end of January '23 and it will be to theme parks. I am figuring I will be only 10-13 weeks out from my surgery and I am concerned that I will not be able to ride roller coasters. They really whip you around and can feel it in the tummy so I am concerned about a leak. Has anyone gone to a theme park after surgery or had your dr tell you how long to avoid an activity like that after surgery? I will definitely be speaking with the surgeon about this, but since that is a few weeks away, I figured I 'd see if anyone on here has had …

So just wanted to know where in the internet do I purchase products?

  31. I'm so upset. In the last 9 days I've gained 9 pounds!!! Nothing has changed with my diet and workouts. I take my vitamins like I'm supposed to. I never cheat on my diet, I work out 5 days a week. So I called my dietician and after we went over everything she said "remember when I told you that having pcos would cause you problems with weight loss? Well here it is. If you remember, you lost 100 pounds on keto and then the weight just started coming back no matter what you did? It looks like it's happening again." I literally started to cry, because nothing I did stopped the weight from coming back. I asked if I could do a pouch reset and maybe reverse it now and she said …

  32. I thought I would be more obsessive about it and want to see every pound that comes off. Turns out, I weigh myself once a week. That way I don't see the daily fluctuations (which I know are normal, but I still don't want to see them lol) and the weight loss has a bigger impact. I'm still struggling with pain in my largest incision as well as the stomach muscle behind it (honestly, that muscle is the bain of my existence right now) so getting that wow factor from a week's worth of weight loss helps in dealing with the lingering pain.

  33. Started by TheLosingGame,

I’m 9 days post op. now on purée stage but everything i ingest hurts. Drinking is more tolerable— i’ll take a sip and will feel it going down, then it will create a bubble then i’ll have to burp before taking another sip. Food on the other hand is torturous. i ate half of a scrambled egg yesterday and felt a sensation that could be compared to insane PMS cramps. Later for dinner had about 1.5oz of ricotta bake….. almost passed out from the pain. Does anybody have tips? i try to take a 2-3min break between spoonfuls and chewing down on things possibly more than 30 times, nothing works. it’s just miserable after. Has anyone experienced this? How long did it last…

So I've been told (from the book I got at my doctors) I can have low-sodium broth, sugar free jello and sugar free Popsicles. However I've seen people have broth from like chicken noodle soup (not low sodium), or pho or even vegetable soup just take out all the chunks and said it really helps. However I thought we couldn't do anything with full on sodium? I had my surgery the 27th so it hasn't been that long but I was wondering as to what other options I can have at this time.

  35. Started by SleeveToBypass2023,

Had a fantastic appointment!!! Today I am exactly 4 1/2 months post op and I've lost 76 pounds!!! My blood sugar was 108 (had my a1c tested, waiting on that). My hematocrit (I always had iron deficient anemia - low red blood cell count, so the higher the hematocrit, the better the iron level) is at 46. My protein is at 8.2. My blood pressure was 113/70. And she agreed that since I work out 5 days per week and everything looks good, we can start to wean me off the Celebrex (anti-inflammatory for joint and muscle pain) and start to increase the turmeric (we've been doing this little by little but we're going to go a little bit bigger and faster now and see how it goes). I a…

Hi, Had my surgery on 5/18/2020. I've been able to maintain between 188-191. However, I started adding the THRIVE packet to my my protein shake in the morning. And have lost 6 pounds this week. My question is, is this program ok for us 2 years post op? The monthly consists of a patch, a pill for energy and the vitamin packets. I am 5'3 my starting weight was 310 my current weight is 184. Thanks

Hi all! I'm almost 2 months post op. I take a chewable bariatric vitamin and calcium combo daily, but just want to make sure there's nothing else that should be added. Thank you!

  38. Hello :-) I'm 9 weeks post surgery and honestly this has ruined my life I don't feel this is ever going to stop and I'm so scared. So my story is a little different. I had a laparoscopic gastric sleeve because I had a benign tumour growing on the outside of my stomach. My gastric sleeve is a smaller op than normal because they didn't take as much of my stomach away but I can't understand why I'm suffering so badly. Due to other health issues I've also got dysphagia and have been on a permanent liquid diet since 2016 and already very underweight. This is unrelated to the benign tumour and still being investigated. I never had any issues with acid before surg…

I've heard horrors about stretching the new stomach and want to avoid that - I just had surgery on 9/20 so any advice is welcome:)

I am at my one month mark, and pretty frustrated. I lost a good amount at first, then a major 2 week stall... and then only a little more. I feel like this whole first month did not go well. How did your first month go?

  45. Started by Mhy12784,

Not sure, but figure this is "probably" related to my sleeve (roughly 4 months post op) but the last few weeks my bladder has been on a different planet. I find myself needing to urinate more than ever, sometimes several times in a short span of time. Ive never had any urinary issues before, so thought this could be potenitaly be related to something with my sleeve. My "best guess" is im consuming too much B vitamins and im peeing frequently to get rid of them. Of course this is completely a guess. Is there anything related to a sleeve that could be causing this ? I do have an appointment coming up with my surgeon, so I plan on discussing it further then. And im pret…

If so, how long does this tend to last? I have had this since the day of surgery. Was anyone else sore just getting out of the bed? Did it feel like you would pull something doing so?! Did anyone else resume Vyvanse days after surgery? It seems to me that most people returned to…

Hello All, I am Kam, 37 years old male. I am going to have Beriatci surgery probably by end of October and have so many questions and concerns about post-op and side effects but not sure who I can ask these questions since my Beriatic group is not very helpful and responsive. I was wondering if I can find someone preferably a male between 30-45yrs that been through surgery so I can ask my question from a real case patient. My current weight is 330lbs and I am 6.1.

I found this Gastric Sleeve Food List By Stage that I thought that may be helpful. It’s close to mirroring what I received from my nutritionist with a few little exceptions (each plan can be so different!) Figured it might be a nice guide to refer to - might give you ideas for each stage to have variety.
