POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Quetta89,

Hey guys I am 3 days post op I believe I have passed all the gas they put in my body but I am having hunger pains. I'm following my diet as the paper said by the hour but the hunger pain is still there. It seems to get worse when I take my liquid medicine.Any advice for me.

  2. Started by luvcanasta,

I had sleeve done on November 30th. Most people are telling me I look great and seem genuinely happy for me. I have a family member that acts jealous though. Just by a few rude remarks I won’t bother posting on here. How do you guys deal with jealousy?

  3. I’m 2 weeks post op today and smack in the middle of the purées stage. Trying to get my protein is a struggle without shakes, but working on it. Tried an Oikos Triple Zero smooth yogurt today. They are 5.2oz. Is that too much at this stage? I ate about 4oz in 30 mins, feel fine. Do any of you finish the 5oz?

  4. Just wondering, at what stage of any will you be able to have a drink with your meal??

  5. I'm almost 3 weeks post op (bypass). I plan to ask my NUT, but how did you measure your food, especially in the early days? Previously, when calorie counting, I would weigh my food. But now when I read the suggested meal plan it says stuff like 3 tablespoons cream of wheat and 2 tablespoons chicken (made that combo up ?). So I've been measuring by volume because I have a one ounce scoop/or tablespoon. But there is a considerable difference between the volume and weight for most foods, so I'm curious!

  6. Started by Jillian K8,

I'm 12 days post op and having the strangest experience today. I'm feeling stress, for seemingly no reason, in my stomach. Hard to explain but I'm stressed for no particular reason and I'm feeling it in my stomach ONLY - knots, cramps, anxiety. Almost like the feeling you get when you're about to go on stage or waiting for a roller coaster. I woke up feeling great and happy so I have no idea where this is coming from. Have others experienced this? Gut/brain connection thing maybe? Healing related?

I'm new here ... hi! :-) Had my vertical sleeve on 11/8. I'm supposed to be getting my 40-60g of Protein via my Protein powder. I'm using powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury vanilla, chocolate and chicken. After three weeks protein liquid prior and another one after surgery I've hit a wall. Honestly, I can't choke down another sip of that stuff. I'd be very interested to learn what you guys do for protein at this stage? Thank you. Larry

I wanted to list my experiences to see if others have the same and what they have done I have not experienced dumping yet. I often forget to not drink and eat at the same time. I was surprised I am ok. I am hungry often. Getting protein is a nonstop struggle.. I found out split pea soup has a lot of protein so I put it in a blender and eat it. Muscle milk, and protein shakes with fresh fruit. Protein shakes, if they are to thick, hurt me. I have ate vegan for three years. I am not super excited about not eating vegan. But, I feel in the first few weeks it is easier and I am ok with that. BUT I took a bite of scrambled eggs and it HURT. I am scared to t…

?I just hit my 4 month post op on March 14th and have lost 95 pounds. I’ve been stuck at 207 for a week & a half. I’m doing my best at everything but I got used to the scale moving every week & I feel defeated. Anybody else feel/felt this type of way??

  10. Started by chloee.e,

I had my surgery (bypass) back in 2019, I got down to 175 stone. I started sertraline 7 months ago now, and have gained nearly 20 lbs. Albeit my diet hasn't been the greatest, but I feel horrific and starting to hate the way my body looks again. Any tips for getting back on track? I snack/graze too much but don't feel strong enough to go back to old/good habits!! Any tips for diets to try/how to lose weight again

  11. Started by Happy with two,

HI All, first time on here, I'm in Ireland and had my surgery on March 10th, I had a blood loss and my haemaglobin dropped but I'm so whacked out. I feel I have no energy. I do small jobs and thats it then. Anyone else feel like this. Food wise I'm flying.

  12. I'm 5 days post-op and basically just getting started with my water intake because I've been in the hospital this whole time (I caught the flu the day after my surgery). My doctor says all she cares about is me getting my water in, but try protein shakes if I can. Well, with the 1 million meds I need to take and all the puking and diarrhea I've had - I REALLY need the nutrition. She told me that the shakes count towards the liquids to reach my goal - does that mean I can alternate between a sip of water, sip of shake, sip of water, etc? Or do I have to wait 15 mins between each substance? I ask because the shakes make me thirsty and I can only handle about 3 sips of shake…

  13. Started by smc124,

I’ve written here in the last weeks how I’ve really been lacking energy. Recently I’ve been noticing my mind (which is most definitely exhausted) either over estimating how tired my body is or how much effort something will take me … for instance like a short half mile walk to the pharmacy after a grueling day. It’s like my head is saying on repeat you’re too tired to do this even as I walk, but as I check in with my body walking, I realize my body is just fine, feels good even. I imagine this is in part the balance of having lost 60+ lbs since first visiting my surgeon for a consult last august. I’m alittle over 2 months post sleeve. I also wonder if any of mental …

  14. Started by RaiderRhode,

I had bypass on 2/13, I've always followed the plan very closely. I managed to lose 70 pounds pre-op on the dieticians plans and working out and then 20 pounds on the liquid diet. Since surgery I've only lost 5 pounds. I thought I was doing very well but I guess not? I stick close to the diet plan, though I admit my calories can go over but my main goal has always been to get to my protein goal before anything else. I've been working out 4-5 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes. I do a lot of strength training because I am into strongwoman stuff, so its been weird staying in the weight restriction. I also hit my water goals alongside my protein goals. …

Hello all! I just made 6 months and now I am experiencing pain on the sides and lower parts of my stomach, also my lower back. My doctor advised that I take it easy, take Tylenol, & call her in a few days. I’m not vomiting or having trouble using the bathroom, so she said it may be a pulled muscle. I did start a new walking/jogging routine on the weekends for exercise, & I’m wondering if that contributed to the pain. Anyone else experience random stomach pains months after surgery?

  16. Everyone talks about the post-op weight loss stall - when does it pick up again? I'm trying not to compare myself to other people's successes, but honestly am frustrated. I am 3 weeks post-op and still on the pureed foods program. I'm only getting about 4-600 calories a day and reach for about 80g of protein and make it there most days thanks to my shakes. The scale hasn't moved in a week - I guess I should be asking my surgical team, but when can I expect that to change? I know I don't walk like I should, I suppose I should do more than 30 minutes a day. My doctor also told me to take a laxative every 3-4 days due to the dietary restrictions causing constipation. Any enc…

  17. Started by CathyMol,

I could use some guidance. I know they say you shouldn’t weigh yourself often at home, but I weighed myself this morning for the first time in a week. I gained 3 pounds! I haven’t done anything different and I’m only a month postop, so I am only eating puréed and soft foods. Has this happened to anybody else? Any advice to get through this and not be totally depressed?

  18. Started by oldandtired,

OK, anybody have persistent diarrhea? They are apparently just now connecting the loss of pancreatic function with WLS. Sometimes. Google it. I went for months to the GP, and they threw antibiotics at this gas/poop problem; while I ate yogurt to get it to stop. Horrible gas as well. BAD stinky gas, lol sorry. Nothing worked. I ASKED MY WEIGHT LOSS DOC TOO. "Oh no, no diarrhea reported with this." That was horse hockey as well. I then went to a Gastrointestinal specialist, who did a protease enzyme test. Turns out my pancreas is not working. While it is not life threatening, it is darn inconvenient. I am not posting this to have you not have the surgery -- I still would …

Hi everyone, I’m almost 4 months post op and I think I’m fighting some kind of bug so my stomach and appetite are a bit off. Normally when my stomach is feeling off meat and cheese are the last things on my mind… my body seems to crave fruits and veggies and can tolerate simple carbohydrates. I know to stay away from the breads, but what have you guys found to be helpful foods when you’re sick?

  20. Started by Bandedbut,

How long did you have issues with gas pain? I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op, and still experience sharp pains on my left side and center just under my left breast. It is worse after drinking, and this pain is not helped by walking, but Gas-X does seem to help. I am walking regularly. It's the only pain/issue I have had. I am still on full liquid diet. I remember gas pain lasting a long time after my lap band, but it was all in my shoulder. Anyone else experience this and how long did it last?

  21. Started by SemperVeritas,

Hi all, tomorrow I will be one week out from my bypass. My recovery has been a bit bumpy, I spent about 24 hours over the weekend puking (I don't know where it all came from!) and in pretty severe gas type pain. That calmed down, and know I'm just trying to increase clear fluids, and not worry about protein. It was scary and painful and I don't want to overdo it again! It's kinda weird thinking I've had virtual no calories for a week, but since I'm able to use the bathroom and everything seems normal there, I'm just going to press on and hope for more each day. Anyhow, my surgeon closes incisions with staples, and I'm scheduled to have them removed this week. While …

Hi guys, So today i was finally able to come home after my procedure. I'm one week post op and after one hell of a week and a long drive home i've just realised i swallowed some panadol tablets whole twice. Theres no pain and it doesnt feel blocked but im still in the hyper concerned post surgery haze i worry what might occur from this. Anyone had a similar situation or any suggestions? The hospital told me i needed to buy chewable multi vitamins and gave me small tablets in hospital. They even told me to keep taking my metformin with no mention of crushing it so it really slipped my mind.

I had to get this horrible taste out of my mouth and I chewed on those cheetos till the were liquidy ....has anyone else done this

  24. I have a quick question. If I order some bariatric vitamins that are for helping to stop hair loss will this effect my bariatric multivitamin? Like will I get too much of certain vitamins? Also has anyone tried these and did they help or not? I am losing tons of hair after 3 and a half months out from surgery, it’s scaring me I need some advice!

  25. March 1st marked 1 year since my revision due to damage caused by acid reflux. I lost an additional 30 pounds which was a big bonus and put me into the healthier weight range. The damage caused by the reflux to my esophagus has healed.

  26. I asked this in pre-op but thought this might be a better place to ask. Gastric sleeve scheduled 4 days from now. My surgeon is going to insert an On-Q pain pump at the end of my procedure. The nurse told me I'll have to remove it myself. I'm having a bit of anxiety over having to remove it. Has anyone had this and if so, did it work, and how uncomfortable was it to remove?

  27. Started by RaiderRhode,

I had bypass on Feb 13, and I've never felt so forgetful! I've missed due dates for papers and meetings for work, or even just forgotten to pack something when I leave the house. I've never been this forgetful! I was a little forgetful around a week into my pre-surgery liquid diet, but now its gotten so bad. My boss has been very forgiving but my professors have not. They see it as an excuse, which isn't very nice. Has anyone else experienced this forgetfullness or mindfog after surgery? When does it go away or what do you do to get over it? I'm hitting both protein and water goals now so I'm hoping beyond hope that helps.

My surgeon's diet guide says no more citrus fruit ever after gastric sleeve surgery. Does anyone know why? I know the juice isn't great because of the sugar, but is there a problem digesting the pulp or pith or something? I'll be sad to lose clementines. VSG 1/20/17 HW: 325 CW: 305

When did you restart your vitamins after surgery & did they cause any nausea? I purchased chewables for all the vitamins and supplements on the doctor's list. The only one which is not chewable but in caplet form is the multivitamin w/iron. The doctor preferred chewables but said pill form could be taken but if larger than an M&M to cut in half. Having only consumed clear liquids for the past week, I am wondering what to expect with the chewables hitting my stomach.

Hi beauties! I'm in so much pain. My face have been doing whatever it want to do. My chest broke out first a few days after my sleeve. It's been about a week now that my face have followed. It itch and burn so bad. I don't know what could help. My Dr is currently out the office this week and her team is acting really slow. The dietitian told me that I may need to contact my primary care. I informed her this happen after surgery so maybe its a reaction to it. She acting as if this isn't some what common after the procedures as if I'm making this up. I have read several research articles of this happening to patients from different studies surrounding it. What is the best probiotic for after Bariatric surgery?

  32. 3 years ago I had a RNY bypass, lost 126 lbs. I’m down to a size 8 some 6’s but I’ve always liked my clothes loose. I’m still trying to get use to the changes to my body, and I’m wondering what others have done to better these problem areas. Mine is my neck, I now have all this extra skin that hangs like a Turkey waddle and I’m very conscious of it. When the pandemic was happening and we had to wear masks I could hide it with the mask. Now that the pandemic is pretty much under control tho I feel like that’s what people look at when they look at me. Please help me, get rid of this, is there exercises that will get rid of it? I’ve been using collagen and retinol creams and…

I am three weeks post Sleeve surgery. Today my father said to me, “when will I be able to tell a difference when I look at you?“ This comment stung because I have lost 40 pounds since beginning the process in November. However, I still have more than 100 to go. Despite losing the weight, none of my clothes, fit any differently, I have not gone down in size, and nobody has noticed the weight loss except for me. My question is, how far along after your surgery were you before people noticed you were losing weight?

  35. Hello everyone! I’ve just had my sleeve surgery on January 8th of this year and if it helps, I’m 32 years old. I’m less than one week post op and I can already see my skin changing and getting flaky from dehydration. My fluid intake is improving so all is well. What I would really love to know is how can I take care of my skin to minimize dry patches, loss skin, stretch marks,…etc. I think the early I tackle this, the better ? Your advice and experience will help me so much - please share any products, habits, vitamins, supplements, exercises…etc. that help you keep your skin healthy

  36. I had the Vertical Gastric Sleeve on January 23rd, and beside a bit of nausea from the anesthesia the first few days I was doing relatively well for the first 2 weeks. That all changed drastically on week 3 and now week 4. I can come nowhere near the amount of protein or liquids or calories my Dr. wants me to consume daily. The reason being that Thursday of week 3 I began having excruciating pain in my lower abdomen and back and it starts within minutes of taking a sip of anything... It feels like someone is taking my mid-section and wringing it out like a wet cloth... It truly will take my breath away when it is happening... I also had to go back from creamy liquids to j…

So it’s been a little over 3 months since my surgery. I haven’t lost any weight for the last two weeks. I actually think I gained a lb or two! ( if my scale is accurate lol). Despite efforts of trying to exercise more. Walking up to 4 miles a day plus riding stationary bike 20 minutes most days! Also been cutting back and only eating 500 to 650 calories a day. What is going on?!?!?

I was wondering if anyone out there does martial arts or contact sports and if fo how did your port handle it? My doctor says that it should be okay after six to eight weeks post-op. I practiced martial arts for several years and stopped training a couple years ago when my son was born. I want to get back into training and was thinking about playing rugby. I hope this does not sound too crazy!

  40. I am 1 week preop (VSG) and due to a genetic chronic disease which can cause me to have very low blood pressure my surgeon just suggested today that I set up home infusions a couple times a week for the first month to prevent dehydration and complications to my health condition. He knew nothing about how to set this up or if it would be covered by insurance, etc. But is certain I need to do it. Has ANYONE had to do this for any reason or have any information on the ins and outs? Thank you.

  41. Started by Victoria_Faith,

I feel like I'm losing my mind. I am 6 days post-op sleeve and haven't had this much energy in YEARS. Is this all nerves or residual excitement for this life change? I'm (of course) still on full liquids for at least another week. I want to start walking more but am worried about feeling hungry if I do too much before I'm eating again. Don't get me wrong, I'm up and walking around, and trying to keep busy for at least 10 minutes every hour, but tomorrow I'm back to work at a sedentary job. I have my first post-op appointment in 2 days, and another 6 days after that until I see my dietician again. Hopefully I'll get to move on to pureed food stage next week.

  42. I had a successful surgery 12 days ago. My only complication was high blood pressure, so I was in Tobey Hospital (Southcoast) for 2 nights. I'm down about 28 lbs, which is a loss of 2+ lbs per day. Is this normal? I started at 386lbs. I'm not eating much. I get my protein from Fairlife Elite shakes (42g) and :Ratio yogurt (25g). Other than that, I have tea, jello, pudding and broth. Anyway, looking forward to stage 4 foods!

  43. Started by Erin18,

What did you feel like the night you had surgery to 2 days post op? Anybody feel discomfort? Does it feel like you're swallowing air when you drink anything or eat yogurt/jello? I'm feeling this. I'm going to tell my surgeon in the morning when he checks in. I hope it's a normal feeling. It definitely feels restricted. Hopefully all I'm feeling is gas...gas that won't come, just tiny burps. I'm scared to eat jello and yogurt, I only took a few bites. I was so scared.

  44. Hi all, I am about 1 year and 1 month post-op and I'm wondering if what I'm experiencing is normal or if there is reason to be concerned. So far, I've lost about 90 lbs in the year that I've been post-op and I'm happy about that. However, I'm concerned that I'm able to eat more than I should in one sitting. For example, I was able to eat four slices of pizza (minus the crust) and it was shocking that I was able to do that. Granted, the slices were pretty thin, but I still feel like I shouldn't be able to do that. Another example: I was able to eat two boneless skinless chicken thighs and about two cups of spring mix no problem and that also somewhat concerned me. My…

I had a Gastric sleeve 10 days ago and went to urgent care today they said low blood pressure and dehydration. They recommend 64 oz of Pedialyte a day. So I went home and sipped on pediLyte and got 33 oz down in 4 hours is this bad? I didn't feel full or nauseous or pain. Trying to stay out of hospital.

Hi All I was recently sleeves on 1/26/23. I was very excited and anxious for the procedure to jump start my progress. Fast fwd since surgery I have been having a hard time. When I graduated to semi soft foods It been rough. I haven't been able to keep anything down. It's been so bad that I was informed that it would be best that I go back to the previous stage of liquids only. I'm starting to feel down about getting the procedure. I been vomiting, having heart burn, discomfort trying to drink water, stomach pains, unsuccessful attempts to belch. I've been so frustrated trying to explain this to my Dr. She look at my like i'm crazy and it's hard telling someone the comp…

I am 4 months and a few days post op, RnY gastric bypass. My restriction experience has been as expected. Until a few days ago... A week ago, I was able to eat about 3-4 ounces of food in one meal. I've been able to eat that for probably about a month. Totally textbook. All of a sudden, I am full after about 2 ounces. I started forcing myself to finish my food and it has been messing with my head. I know that overeating is a very bad idea, so I've decided to stop doing that. I've only been doing it for about 4 days, so I don't think I've caused myself any long-term damage. But, I'm kinda weirded out about the fact that I'm suddenly having the restriction that I …

  49. I'm two days post op and feel mostly good. Any time I transition up or down, it's like incisions burn. Also, my whole body feels swollen and puffy, and I think I have gained a pound since my surgery, even though I've had practically nothing in the hospital and now at home I'm drinking about an ounce every 15 minutes. How long should I wait before attempting to measure my weight again? Will all this swelling go away?
