POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by PennyinAL,

Hi I had my lap band (originally inserted 2009) removed and replaced by a gastric bypass yesterday at 11am and sent to ICU here in local hospital. No one told me and I’m losing my ever loving mind here because I haven’t had anything to drink since the tiny bottle of pre-operative body armor drink I was given to drink before my surgery! I was told to do liquid diet 24 hrs before and then nothing after midnight so 12:01 am Tuesday morning I stopped drinking anything, headed to hospital I was told to drink the little bottle of body armor which was about 7 oz. Arrived early taken back and done early and into ICU room by around 2-3 pm Tuesday. Upon waking I imme…

Hi, I am considering Wt loss surgery. I am curious about the healing time, I want to have an idea when I can get back in the swimming pool and for how long, I spend lots of time inside the swimming pool (water aerobics and swimming)

Hello lovelies.....tell me how your first week or first two weeks were after surgery. Please be honest. I think that is what I am worried about the most. All of my paperwork has been sent off for insurance approval

  4. Started by Brandiwine77,

Y'all, I know I cannot be the only one who is having severe food aversions. To stuff that I typically like! I'm 9 weeks post VSG. I brought some good turkey lunch meat, and some edamame with me for lunch. It got lunch time an I didn't really want it, but decided to eat is, as I didn't need to go out and try to hunt something down to eat. So I put a little chive cream cheese on my turkey and make a roll up and steamed my edamame (in the pods). I ate some turkey and a few edamame, and instantly started to gag. Anyone else? Or am I just a weirdo?

  5. Started by LewiB,

Hey everyone I am 1 day post op and still have a bit of gas coming through which is expected but happy to be in a normal bed instead of the hospital! Anyone else have to do blood thinner injections? Was it easy to do on yourself?

  6. Started by longhaul68,

Hey all, Just wanted to get a heads up out to those who are perimenopausal. I’m 54 yo and I’ve lost almost 70 lbs since I started WLS inquiry. At 3 month check up I was in the middle of a very heavy and unexpected period, feeling lightheaded and sluggish though alert. But 3 weeks of heavy period landed me in ER with very low BP and diagnosis of severe anemia. I’m on the slow boat to regaining healthy blood pressure/volume by taking it easy and iron supplements - though no transfusion. The doctor thought the very quick drop in estrogen (stored in fat cells) may have contributed to the heavy period, resulting in blood loss. If anyone has experienced strange periods (I wa…

Hello I am officially 1week post op and I have one incision area that hurts really bad. It feels like a lump(swollen maybe ) but it’s the only one that hurts and feels this way. Anyone have similar issues? Reached out to surgeon but no real advice for pain besides Tylenol

  8. Started by Zenazena,

Hi everyone, I am getting really concerned - I had my surgery 3 weeks ago. I don't seem to have much restriction or very little. I just ate 5 Weetabix with milk and honey. I obviously haven't conquered my BED. Has anyone got any good ideas about what I can do please? I'm so ashamed. I live in the UK

  9. Started by EboniePrincess,

Taking a really long time to have surgery. Every step is being prolonged I really feel like they don't want me to have it or it's something they're not telling me. It's been about 8 months now. I feel like I'm chasing them down to get every step processed I'm really getting discouraged.

  10. Started by bob_behn,

I have my first business trip scheduled to France in the beginning of June. I'll be just shy of 2 months post op by then. Any tips or tricks to calm the nerves on food and what to bring? Its a short trip and I am a frequent flyer but the first trip after a major change like this can be nerve-wracking!

  11. Started by Gastric2023!,

I thought I wasn’t suppose to be hungry after my sleeve. I am 5 days post op. I’m not eating enough protein shakes cuz z it’s not good anymore. Is this hunger normal?

  12. Started by Tomo,

I have been suffering from the worst allergies and started taking Zyrtec. I thought it was my imagination but it increased my appetite. I looked it up and it does indeed have that as a side effect for some people. While it is minimal compared to first generation antihistamines, it still crosses the blood brain barrier. I changed over to Claritin (doesn't cross so no effect on appetite) but that doesn't work so well for me. [emoji24] What do you all do if you have allergies?

  13. Started by mags22,

Hi all! I’m almost 1 year post op and have only lost about 88 lbs. I feel like that is not enough and I should be down a lot more. Anyone have any advice? Thanks!

  14. For the first time in 24 years, I'm below 260. I don't even have words......

  15. Taken about 20 minutes ago..... and peep the size I'm in now (from a size 30!!)

  16. So I did my surgery on July 11th, and I'm currently on my puree stage and I've been doing soups, mashed potatoes, and yogurt outside of my liquids, but I've been getting some mild discomfort when eating. Not really sure if it's normal; like it feels like an empty stomach cramp but goes away after a time, but doesn't happen when I drink my fluids. Am I eating too fast? Or is it something else? Will this inhibit me from moving forward to soft foods?

  17. Started by middlet,

For those of you 4+ years post op gastric sleeve, how many oz are you able to eat? (Not including slider)  What does a typical day look like for you?

  18. Started by aprilmarie817,

Hey all my name is April I am 4 years out of GS 2019. I am having a lot of trouble and needing some support to maintain my weight. I lost 70 pounds before the pandemic but I need to lose these last 20 pounds please help.

Hey everyone, I am 2 weeks post op for the SADI-S and had an egg for my first food after clear liquids. I am now back to liquids. After the egg for 2 hours I felt like I was trying to burp and swallow at the same time and it was fighting to go down. Felt horrible. I don't want to eat after that experience and am glad to be back to clear liquids. It felt like when you eat too fast. Anyone else have this and when will it go away?

  20. I had the surgery 4/28/23 At 209 month one I was 189 month two 177 month 3 185! I this is so disrespectful. I feel myself going backwards. I have spoken with the psychiatrist surgeon and nutritionist they said not to weigh myself but I feel like I am consuming more than I am suppose to this is so frustrating nothin satisfies me.

  21. Started by greekgoddess2468,

Hi everyone! When did everyone have their first sip post surgery? I’m 7 months out now & on vacation. I want to have one cocktail but I’m kind of nervous since I have drank in forever and I don’t eat much.

  22. Hi all, I'm looking for some motivation and I probably need a good ass swatting while we're at it!! I am almost one year out (2 weeks shy) and I have been completely off track since December. I had my gall bladder removed at the end od November (emergency) and I haven't lost any weight since then. I've been gaining and losing the same 3-5 pounds and have noticed (and tried to ignore) myself falling back into old damaging habits. Since my surgery I've had a major upheaval at work, and have been dealing with a lot more responsibility and stress. I began having problems with my husband which came close and may possibly still result in divorce. I do not have a strong sup…

Hey quick question. I cant remember what post I read it in but do people post surgery have trouble wiping? What is that from and how long does that last? How long till you can take a shower? And has anyone gotten one of those wiping gagets. I am 33 and pretty limber, should I be worried?

Hi, I had RNY on Tuesday, July 25th. My clinic advised against protein shakes afterwards but has me making my own liquid drinks with defined amounts of proteins, vegetables and added broths, etc. I’m not even able to eat half of what they told me I should try for. Is this normal? Does it just take time?

  25. Hey people! 4 months and 3 days post RNY. What meal and snack ideas can you give me that are high in protein? I'm still not hitting my goals and currently thinking about drinking protein, turns my stomach. This happened in the beginning aftrr surgery as well. Any good recipes? I know there are recipes on here somewhere, but what are your top high protein foods? I need to start planning my foods ahead again. How long did everyone's hair loss last? When I had lapband in 2009, my hair loss wasn't as bad as it is this time. My hair gets SO tangled! Probably because this time my hair is lightened and colored with fashion colors. But, when did the hair lo…

  26. Going on 3, maybe 4 yrs post-op. Wow, never thought there'd come a day when I didn't remember. For past 2 yrs I've endured right sided pain. At first I thought it was ovarian but got that checked (was fine) and was a bit high for ovarian. During scans of ovaries/abdomen, it was consistently noted my gallbladder was 'distended'. Sometimes I'd have attacks of pain that would last for hours. I was always stunned when scans would say no 'sludge, no stones, nada' so I thought great, another medical mystery. Finally when I ended up in ER over Christmas 'sludge' and stones were finally noted so they decided to remove it. I was in so much pain that even getting to ER is a bl…

I had to take the morning after pill last weekend, but I have just woken in a panic after the thought occurred to me that it may not be effective after bypass? My husband and I already have 3 children and our family is complete with my baby child only being 9m old, I just want to know if anyone else has found them selves in a similar situation and the pill has been effective? My surgical office is closed untill Tuesday this week so I can't just call to ask.

  28. Started by SleeveToBypass2023,

I've seen some posts on here that are sad or upset because in 2 weeks the OP has only lost 10-15 pounds. Let me give you a few things to think about. #1 - everyone loses weight differently, so never compare yourself to anyone else #2 - non scale victories are at least as important (if not more important) than what the scale shows. Examples are: fitting in seats better, walking better, clothes and rings fitting better or getting too big, getting off meds, no longer having high bp or being diabetic, etc... #3 - the average "normal" weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week, and if you're on some kind of special diet then MAYBE 2-3 pounds per week. So if you look at …

I’ve had constant burping since surgery 6 days ago. My doctor doesn’t seem too overly concerned about it, but I’m curious if anyone else has had that experience, and did anything help? Currently my PA had me stop taking any fluids (other than to take my pills) and I’m taking Gas-X. I’m terrified of a leak, so any reassurance would be helpful

  31. Started by mcipanda,

Has anyone tried Inspire Protein (bariatriceating.com)? I’m looking at their protein powders and wondering if anyone has thoughts on the taste and texture if you’ve tried it? It’s pricey and I don’t see customer reviews. Plus, they don’t offer refunds or exchanges if you don’t like the product (nor so I see sample packets like they have on Unjury). The one selling point is the flavor selection (huge). Any feedback?

  32. Hey y’all it’s been a minute since I’ve posted or asked question…lately I’ve been experiencing a lot of diarrhea but t no t sure how f it’s dumping or something else…I will say I did eat something’s I prolly shouldn’t lent have based on m timeline given b my doctor…I’m in 15 weeks post op and was told not to eat port or beef until. Hey everyone! I had my procedure yesterday. The gas pains were horrible the first day and night, but once I started really moving around a lot, started burping/farting (sorry but it's truuuuue) I felt so much better. How is everyone else feeling? I'm taking very small sips of protein shake and water, trying to be very cautiously learning my current limits without getting sick.

  35. I am getting ready to go back to work, and want to start planning on snack ideas to take with me. i will be 5 weeks post op when I return to work, so would appreciate any and all snack ideas other than my protein drinks - don't get me wrong, I love the different premier protein and muscle milk flavors.... but just want something different. I would love to hear ALL snacks, not just recent post op ones. Ideally these are just snacks, but if they are a little bigger that's fine too, as I can consolidate them to make it 1 or 2 snacks Ive ordered small containers to hold snacks to get ready some suggestions I've read are tuna in the foil packs, hummus, almon…

  36. As the title says, I hit my 3 week stall about 2 days ago. I have been through this before, so I know not to check my weight for a week now. The stalls are the worst part of all this, and as time goes on, they get longer and longer. But I've already been to this dance, so at least I know what to expect. My gerd is getting bad. I had to go up to 40mg every day and see how that works (going to every other day caused issues, so today starts every day again). I was really hoping that I would be able to get off PPI with this revision, but so far, no. At least I've gone from 80mg daily to 40. If I could get down to maybe 20mg I could learn to be ok with it. I guess time w…

So for the past couple of days, I've been having black diarrhea. Is this to be expected? I know iron can cause black stool and I've been strictly on liquid diet so could explain the diarrhea, but how do I know it's not an ulcer? I just don't know what I can do over the weekend when the surgical group I had the surgery with or the bariatric coordinator at the hospital to contact for my questions are off for the weekend.

  38. Highest weight: 346 Weight the day of surgery: 316.4 Current weight: 266 It’s been 9 months since I had the sleeve and I’ve only lost 50 lbs. I‘ve expressed my concern with my surgeon, and she seemed somewhat concerned. She put me on Phentermine which helped me lose 10 lbs but that’s about it. I can’t eat as much as I used to, but I can still eat quite a bit before feeling full which scares me. I portion my food out to try to avoid overeating. I’m not sure what more to do. I don’t have any health issues other than being obese. I’ve been feeling really defeated about this. Does anyone have any advice on maybe kickstarting the weight loss again or maybe takin…

5 weeks out... I ate an entire pack of weight control oatmeal for breakfast, still currently hungry. I seriously feel like I wasted my money. My stomach apparently was ginormous because I'm still always hungry. Some freakin bull. I'm so frustrated. And height has nothing to do with it cos I'm short as ****.

  40. Started by CarmenG,

How do y'all sleep? I'm a stomach and side sleeper when I first go to bed, but I always wake up on my back. I'm dying to lie down on my stomach! I've been able to sleep on my left side, not so much my right (it feels weird now). I'm a revision from sleeve to bypass, but my sleeve was over 14 years ago. I honestly don't remember how long it took before I could sleep on my tummy. I'm feeling that frustration from when I was pregnant! LOL!

I am aware that it is normal and its the loss of fat but dang. i have tried an egg crate cushion, a donut butt coyx or however its spelled cushion. Ive tried them on top of each both ways. The only smallest relief I get is if I set at an angle, on my hip, with my ankle under me to keep me tilted. But this puts my foot/leg to sleep. I have similar pain in my husbands truck, or sitting in my car longer than 3 hrs. I can't change my office chair bc work requires all of our chairs to look identical. HELPPPP.

  42. Started by KathyLev,

Before surgery at one of my dietician appointments , she did a bunch of calculations and said this surgery will help me lose 30 pounds. Granted,I started out with a lower BMI , but after reading all the weight loss by everyone else ,I feel like having the surgery, I went nuclear over a measley 30 pounds ! I do want to lose more ,so I guess it's up to me to do the rest of the work after I hit that point. Did anyone get a calculation like this ? Have you lost beyond the number they gave you by your own efforts ? Maybe I'm overthinking this . I've been at a stall for 3 weeks now and I think it's messing with my head .

  43. Started by Melinda72,

Hi all, haven't posted on here in a while, but I am struggling. I have been at a stall for almost 8 months. I have changed up many different things.... pretty much did everything I can think of and still stuck. I go between 190 and 195 and I am dying to see 189. LOL any suggestions? My doc put me on Addipex months ago and that's not even helping.

So my incisions themselves are healing ok. But the areas around them are raised, SUPER itchy, and red. This didn't happen with my last surgery, so I'm not sure what to think. I tried triple antibiotic. I tried Benadryl cream and tablets. I tried hydrocortisone cream. Nothing is helping. Anyone else have this before? My doctor's office doesn't open for another hour, so I'm hoping to get some ideas what this could be until then.

  47. Around 5 months ago (I would've been 5 months PO then as 10 months PO now) I started to get a sharp constant stabbing pain under my left rib. It has come and gone over the months and I mentioned it to my consultant who ordered a CT scan which I'm still waiting on the results for. But its really gotten worse over the last few weeks now radiating to my left shoulder making breathing painful. I've had some nausea and sweating with it also. I went to A+E and all tests came back fine. X ray showed a build up of poop so they diagnosed constipation and after some suppositories I had a full clear out. The pain continued. Ended up in A+E again and they're stumped. R…

  48. I'm completely shocked to say it's been a MILLION times better this time around than it was with my sleeve!!! I was able to take all my pills, at once, by day 4 post op. I've been able to get my water in from day 1. I was able to handle cold stuff. And other than incision/stomach muscle pain, there has been NO PAIN at all. I've been able to walk for 20 minutes 3x per day since day 6 post op. The bad thing is that there isn't a reduction in hunger at all and i haven't noticed any restriction or full feeling or anything. Yesterday was my first day eating mushy foods, and when I had my sleeve, I was IMMEDIATELY full before I even finished my allotted amount. This time? Nope.…
