POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by hellohalo,

Hi guys, It's me again. I'm 6 days post op and I'm realizing more and more that my symptoms are reflux. I take 40 mg of pantoprazol every morning since the day after the surgery yet I cough like crazy, have food stuck in my throat feeling and almost feel the acid bubbles circulating. Not to mention the crazy hunger feeling I get even right after eating. Are these symptoms normal the first weeks of sleeve? Or is it really possible to get reflux this early stage while on a high dose of ppi? I'm not looking forward to eating real food!

  2. Hey there, 3 months post op and really struggling with permanent cramps & burping. This seems to happen every time I have my period, however, my PMS pre surgery was never this bad. I now cramp permanently (24/7) for up to 2.5 weeks (even though my period itself only lasts 3-5 days), i’m bloated and I permanently need to burp as the gas is just extreme. Basically I feel like how I did in my first week after surgery with the gas, walking and burping. I’m in severe pain and every night I have spasm attacks so my sleep is really bad. Has anyone else been through this? if so: 1) How did you manage this? 2) How long did it last? 3) why has it happen…

I'm almost six weeks out and having terrible left side pain still. When will it stop? I go back to work in a few days and I need this to stoooop

  4. I am 6 wk post op since I started the foods again, I've had a problem with eggs and certain dairy. But I'm ok with cheese which makes no sense. Also if I drink any protein product I've tried all including unflavored. I get a terrible nausea pressure feeling and I can't eat or drink for hours or I just gag /throw it up. Any suggestions on taking in extra protein? I'm having lentils, chicken and other sources of protein but I know I'm not making my daily. Mind you before surgery. I loved eggs so I'm not sure why. I keep trying to have them again and I really can't tolerate them but I've had no issue with cheese at all.

Even running around, my heart rate is 55 bpm. I'm kind of concerned. I'll see the surgeon for my post-op one year appointment later this month. Please let me know your experience on this issue. Kind of worried. I know our organs need a certain amount of blood flow to stay healthy. I should be eating 1200 cal as per my doctor. He told me that months ago. I'm still around 1000 cal at 12 months post-op. It's not an appetite problem (it has increased), but it's a mind problem. I'm working on it though, and it's a trial and error thing for finding maintenance level. Other than that, I feel good these day, blood tests are perfect (even my once high cholesterol is normal) but I …

Hello everyone, i just had my VSG done on Aug 3rd. apparently i had low oxygen levels and a really hard time” sipping “ and most people go home after 1 night at the hospital. well i stayed for 4 nights. Im feeling great so far no pain or nausea. im just missing the whole food taste and the actual BITING. and like i told some of my family members “i still don’t recommend it” lol and ask to again in a month! When (what day or stage) did you guys reintroduced eggs to your diets?

Curious to see what "tricks" anyone uses to get more exercise in. I recently started exercising again, and am really trying to get the ball rolling. I started the Couch to 5K program for running - I've done it in the past but never followed up so I'm trying again, starting week 3 tomorrow. Also started doing circuit training at Planet Fitness three times a week on the days when I'm not running. But the biggest thing is trying to get a lot of aerobic exercise in the form of the elliptical machine at Planet Fitness. It's boring but I found a way to "trick" myself into doing it for long periods of time. I bring my tablet and watch TV shows and movies and the time…

Hi. I’m new here. I’m hoping for some encouragement and advice. I had surgery yesterday, the 13th. I just got home today. I’m dealing with a severe headache and backache. Whenever I drink something (sip that is) I can feel it hit my stomach like a brick. So when I take my meds, I have to space them out so that it doesn’t make me sick. I have had some regret and am trying to stay positive. I like the Premier Protein drinks, but am having a hard tim with them needing to be room temperature. So how am I going to get protein in my system, besides the very little broth I'm sipping? I’m drinking Gatorade zero and diet tea because I am use to a lot of caffeine and this is the b…

Hi everyone they were finally able to perform surgery. I was on the table and cut open on july 11th and surgery was stopped because my liver was too large. I was put on a new diet to shrink my liver and finally made it through on august 2nd. My recovery time is going to take longer because they had to do a few larger incisions to get it done and had to use staples to close me up... I do believe I found something worse than labor... I just have to remind myself its going to be worth it in the long run. I was moved up to full fluid diet the day after and seems well. Boy this pain is kicking my butt any ideas that can help relieve some of it. I was given 7 oxycodone to come …

Looking for feedback on an idea. I was thinking of making a veggie soup in my instant pot, then blending it so it’s more liquid-phase compliant. I’m so tired of protein shakes and broth, I could scream, and I don’t love canned soup. My only big concern is the tomatoes - my program says no tomatoes/tomato products for the first 3 months because they have too much acid. Anyone done something similar, or have any recipes?

  12. I finally hit 50 pounds lost today!!!! It's exactly 3 months since my surgery and I'm down 1 clothing size, 1 ring size, and 50 pounds!!!! It seems like my body likes to do a 2-3 week stall every month and a half or so, so it's been slow going. But it FINALLY happened today. WooHoo!!!!!

Hi all, Hope you are all doing well. I am 5 weeks post-sleeve and take the pill as contraception. I take this back to back and don't usually allow myself a period (this is totally safe). For the past few days I have been experiencing heavy painful bleeds, do you think this has anything to do with the sleeve or weight loss? Does the sleeve have any bearing on how medication (the pill in this case) is absorbed by the body? I would appreciate any help/ advice! Thank you!!

  14. Ok so I have been having bowel movement every 4-5 days and todays Bowel movement I had to put a lot of pressure and when I passed the stool, I had an excruciating pain in the rectal area. What should I do? Should I continue start taking the softener? When will this issue end? Is it because I’m taking multi vitamins with IRON? My doctor told me stop taking mult vitamins with iron for. a week. My fiber intake bas been low because I’m avoiding grains and beans. Should I start taking fiber supplements? I have equate prebiotic fiber supplements I can take? Please help. Pain is very bad. I just applied some preparation it’s not helping. Maybe I’ll try witch hazel wipes. Did …

  15. I'd like to know the reasons/purposes of the post-op diet and the different stages. I am following my instructions exactly. I think. I hope I'm doing it right. Now, likely all y'all know that a clear liquid diet sucks. The guide I was given says I have to be on the clear liquid stage for week 1 and I have 2 days left. But I have heard others only having clear liquids for 1-3 days. I'm doing well and I'd like to try a few things that are on my list for week 2 if it isn't going to hurt me. Which leads me to the question. What is the purpose of the clear liquid diet? Am I on a clear liquid diet to allow my new sleeve stomach to heal or is it so I won't have issue…

  17. Started by DaisyAndSunshine,

I have been wanting to create a topic on my weight loss journey after having reached BMI of under 30 and not being obese anymore but thought to wait it out so I can cross off other aspects from the checklist. This morning I weighted - 133.2 Lbs. Height is 4' 10.2" (148cm). BMI 27.6. Heightest weight was 234 lbs, of which I lost 15lbs pre-Op and another 10 lbs during the pre-Op diet. I was at 210 lbs on the day of the surgery. So officially I have lost 100+ lbs of my highest weight ever ? This is the lowest I have ever been ever since I remember. Last lowest I remember was 137lbs, more than a decade ago, post Dr. Bernstein's weight loss program. But tha…

Still going but I have a been having horrible leg cramps all they the day and night. I calling my Dr tomorrow I feel like it is probably because I’m not exercising as I should or something I Drink 80-100 ounces of water daily Angie most every day I am very strict about my diet. Idotaoemy vitamins an calcium but something is going wrong.. Has another else ever had this problem?

  21. Hi all! I’m 8 days post op RNY and I have a question that I haven’t found the answer to while googling. I’ll call my nutritionist tomorrow and ask but just wondering if it’s possible to add protein powder to my pre-mixed shakes? Or is that too much protein at once? I’m having a hard time drinking as many protein shakes as I need but I just can’t fit them in. Between drinking all the water and waiting 30min before and after the day gets way from me. I have a shake in the morning like 8am and I’m still full by 2-3pm.

Ok I have to make a confession…I’m 28 days post op and I was the at movie theater yesterday and couldn’t resist their Nachos and cheese but I only had 10 chips with cheese dip. I felt guilty and skipped dinner and had a protein shake. Does anyone go through these issues that early or is it just me?

  23. Started by PeachyQueen,

Hi there! I got my VSG surgery last week on July 7th. After two days of gas pain (woof I did NOT love that,) I have been having, honestly, a pretty easy go. The biggest complaint I have is my incisions are itchy haha! However, I have been having a LOT of anxiety over aiming for perfection: eating exactly what’s on my meal plan, exactly the right amount, and doing everything exactly right. Today, it stressed me out, which caused me to have a mini caving moment of having half of a gluten free cracker (chewed very slowly). Now, I don’t think that’s a huge deal, or will stretch my stomach and stitches open, but I am wondering do others struggle/struggled with following t…

  24. I'm on day 16 of my stall and it's really bothering me. I hate stalls. But the worst thing is my daughter woke up really sick yesterday and now I'm sick today. Fever, achy, super tired, sick to my stomach, bad headache, runny/stuffy nose. I'm drinking the Fairlife protein shake (with caffeine) and eating fruit because honestly, that's all I can do. I normally get my protein from my food but I have a feeling that while I'm sick I'll be getting half or a little more from my shakes and protein drinks. Nothing is sitting right in my stomach besides fruit. Not sure how that's going to affect my weight, but I'll worry about it later. I hate being sick. Blah....

I'm curious about stalls. My weight loss has stalled many times in the 3 months since surgery. I'm curious as to how many stalls everyone had in the first six months post-op?

  26. Started by Rey Rodriguez,

I’ve never really had a major plateau after my vsg other than a few days or so with no weight loss. I’m at 9 and half months post op and have noticed I haven’t lost any weight these past 3 weeks. I’m only a few pounds away from my goal and I’m wondering will I still lose weight or is this it?

  27. I've started to notice something about my mindset with food now. I know how much I'm supposed to eat, but every bite makes me feel like I'm going to stop losing weight (especially when the scale doesn't move for a day or 2) and I find myself restricting what I eat. Because I never lost my hunger hormone, it's always a dance trying to figure out when to stop eating (it's hard to stop when you're still so hungry but you've eaten the allotted amount for that meal). So now I've somehow gotten myself to the point where I don't like to eat anything because I just know that I know it'll pack the weight back on. I'm always hungry, so I'm getting used to ignoring it. So it se…

So it seems like my weight is stalling since a few years out from post OP (got gastric bypass in 2018), I was having issues with swelling and inflammation mainly in the lower half of my body and some of my upper arms, only to get an appointment with a lipedema specialist to find out if I have lipedema. Long story short, I have stage 3 lipedema. So the doctor (Dr.Amron) told me that lipedema is hard to treat, it's a misunderstood condition and not all of the treatments are covered. So I will probably have to pay out of pocket even though my compression garments and compression pump might be covered by insurance. I'm glad I got to the bottom of it, I've been suffering since…

  30. Started by Sabi,

so I’m about 5 weeks post opp and I have lost about 35lbs and I have stalled for the last week and a half. I just feel like I’m failing :( I feel like what if I don’t lose anymore? Was it all worth nothing? I’m wondering if anyone else ever felt these emotions I am a super emotional person but losing weight has been so amazing and it would make me so sad if you know this is it… I’m not sure how to totally explain it I just don’t feel so hot. I know stalls are normal but what If I’m doing something wrong? You know? I’m just scared.

Hello! I’m just 5 months post-op and doing fantastic. Everything’s gone so well thus far except for the crazy amounts of hair I’m losing. It started a few weeks ago and hasn’t let up. I knew this would happen and it’s an easy price to pay for how healthy and happy WLS has made me. I’m wondering if anyone knows of a way to combat or at least mitigate the loss? My hairstylist suggested a supplement called Viviscal, and castor oil for my scalp, and shampoo and conditioner that regrow and thicken hair. Has anything worked for you? Thanks in advance!

Hi all! I‘m hoping to get some help/advice around if anybody has found anything helpful for hair loss after surgery? I’m 10 months post op gastric bypass surgery, and 142lbs down (still crazy to say). I feel amazing, so happy with these results, but the one thing that’s getting me down is the hair loss. From what I’d read, a lot of people find this stops/slows down after 6 months, but I’m 10 months in and seeing no sign of improvement. My post op blood tests are normal, so there’s nothing wrong in that regard. I currently take high strength biotin, zinc and selenium. I’ve been on these for a few months but again, no improvement…

The scale hasn't moved in about 8 days. I haven't gained this time, which I'm very happy about, but I haven't lost either. I fluctuate between the same 2 pounds (between 343 - 341). I have PCOS, and I was told that will make it harder and take longer to actually lose the weight and keep it off. But it's REALLY frustrating and annoying. It's harder to lose the weight now than it was when I was just doing keto. I read that we're not supposed to do keto after bariatric surgery, but MAN it's tempting!!! I know this will pass, I know this is normal, but I HATE that it's normal. I'm 2 1/2 months out from surgery, so I'm not surprised I'm getting hit again. But UGH!!!!!

I’m 3 weeks out from VSG. I’m currently a eating modified regular diet. My plan’s guidance is to stay between 600-800 calories a day. When I eat I definitely fill up quickly and feel restriction which I’m pleased with but I find that I’m hungry again less than an hour later. I’m eating protein, limiting carbs, drinking water, and doing physical activity through walking or recumbent bike. I’m feeling frustrated because I feel like I’m struggling with hunger a lot more than I should. I’m already getting close to maxing out that calorie range but I’m still hungry. I know it’s not head hunger because I have physical hunger symptoms like growling/rumbling stomach. Anyone else …

  38. So I started taking soft foods (scrambled eggs, tilapia and ground beef)…I have been holding it all well along with medication pills. Today I started the multivitamin chewable tablet and I threw up right after 5 minutes of taking. It was a big chewable tablet (Bariatric ultra vitamin solo) and I chewed properly but it all came out. Any guidance here on what should I do? Maybe I should start taking the capsules of multi vitamin because I have been taking other capsules (Tylenol, Antio biotics) just well.

Hi Everyone! I had my surgery in March 2022. I am about 4 months post op and have lost 36% of my weight since my last doc visit. I have talked to my doctor about how I dread eating because of how it makes me feel afterwards. I feel exhausted, my body feels weak and gross. I am more than grateful to myself for having the surgery but the discomfort after eating meals makes me dread eating. I try to eat 3 times a day but the feeling after eating has made me go to a graze type period where i have a few almonds every few hours & I even dread eating the almonds. Another thing I have is this dry clenching of the stomach as if its a desert trying to suck any fluids into …

  40. I’m on day three from having a revision surgery to take out my lapband, fix a hiatal hernia, and have a gastric bypass. I’m doing decently except for when I try to stand up from my bed or my sofa, the big incision on the right middle of my torso hurts like crazy. Burns, stings, sharp pain — more than just “sore” like the other incisions. It takes my breath away. I’m guessing this big incision is where my surgeon took out the port from the lapband and did most of the work, since it’s the biggest and most painful one by far. I don’t remember having one incision be this painful after my two other laparoscopic surgeries (appendectomy and lap band). Anyo…

I know its recommended to wait two weeks before moving onto soft foods/pureeds, but literally all i want is just a little bit, even a small soft food meal like some canned tuna to satisfy my urge to have something besides liquids. Is it alright to have even just a small soft meal to satisfy myself or is it too early? This stage is getting to my head a little bit but otherwise i honestly feel great. 44. Hey everyone! I havent had surgery yet, but I was thinking maybe it'd be good idea to get some recipes for liquid, pureed and solid stages of food. I want to do this the right way this time and follow it to a T. Also, do you all drink just water? I have a hard time getting 64 ounces in. I'm addicted to soda. Well I only have 1 to 2 cans a day or 3. How do you avoid it? Lastly, I have a sweet tooth, what are your favorite "healthy" versions of sweets if you have any that won't really make sick. Probably best to stay away all together, huh?

  45. Ya'll wanna hear something weird? Since I had my sleeve surgery on May 3rd, I've noticed my tastes are different. I used to be OBSESSED with bacon. Now I'm kinda meh about it. I could honestly take it or leave it. Don't really care either way. It just doesn't taste the same to me anymore. I rarely use salt anymore because it tastes REALLY strong to me now (I used to salt everything). I also used to be completely head over heels for pickles. And while I still like them, the taste is SO strong now that I can only nurse one every once in a great while (when I used to be able to eat like half a jar in 1 sitting). Sour and tarte flavors used to be my absolute FAVORIT…
