Weight loss starts when?

Hey y'all, I'm 6 days post op for the gastric sleeve. Ever since I came home from the hospital I have weighed 4 or 5 more pounds than my starting surgery weight. I don't understand why I have gained and not lost weight. I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong. Although, I do struggle getting my water and protein in. Other than that I feel pretty good. What is everyone else's experience? Is this normal or not?

Oh wow! This is one thing I didn't know I'm glad I joined this forum! as I'm learning so much before hand, ( I'm due for gastric bypass + hiatal hernia on the 27th of April) thank you all for sharing your experiences with us[emoji120][emoji120]

Interesting...

I've had the complete opposite experience.

Had surgery Monday. Weighed 355 in the hospital right before it (and after 3 days of liquid diet). Got out of the hospital on Wednesday. Weighed 348 on Thursday night, and then I weighed 337 this morning. Hope I'm not dehydrated.

Everyone's bodies work at different rates. I did gain 5 pounds after surgery, but have lost ten pounds since home. Surgery was April 6

Yes Gf I know exactly what you mean??

Weight gain is normal from all the IV fluids. Drink as much water/liquids (as your program advises) and walk walk walk. This will help with any pain and get your body back in whack.

I went to the hospital at 309 and came home at like 315. It comes off fast after a couple of days to a week. Don't worry! All part of the journey.

I didn't gain or lose anything. It probably varies a lot by the amount the hospital pumps you full of and how dehydrated you are going in, how much you pee afterwards, along with the fact that bodies are weird and different. The weight will come off.

You have to keep in mind that you were filled with gas/air and fluids in the hospital and your body is wondering what the heck just happened to it. You're recovering. The weight is going to drop like a rock any day now. QUIT WEIGHING!

LOL! And sometimes that feeling sticks around for several weeks (almost six so far, in my case).

All these post-surgery water weight stories make me so happy my surgeon had me take Lasix while at the hospital to get the fluids out. I have a heart issue and a standing prescription for Lasix as needed (which is very, very rarely). At the time I was a bit annoyed as to why they made me take it in the hospital, since I take it so rarely, but sometimes it's almost like the doctors have reasons for what they do! ;-) Looking back I am really happy they made me take it. I hadn't realized before surgery that you can gain all that water weight.

It's also not unique to WLS. My brother got his gall bladder out a few months ago, and legitimately gained 20 lbs in water weight as a result. It took a good 4-5 weeks to get it out. Patience is a virtue when dealing with post-surgical water weight...
