3 weeks Post Op and so sick

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I wanted to know if anyone has experienced what I’m going through. If so can you please share.
im 3 weeks post op and the last 4-5 days I’ve been nauseous and just feel horrible. 2 nights ago I went to the ER to receive fluids. From my blood work they told me my liver levels were elevated and they wanted to do an ultrasound to check my gallbladder. They said it was fine. So I got 3 bags of fluids and they sent me home. For the past two days I keep sipping my fluids and I’m still throwing up, I’m weak, I have stomach cramps. This doesn’t feel right at all. I’m miserable and it’s hard to continue sipping with the nausea and all the gagging and puking. Anyone have these issues?

I understand your pain. I had the surgery over 10 years ago and had similar reactions. To this day if I eat or drink just a very little bit too much I get sick. This was one of the worst decisions I have ever made. I would recommend to everyone not to have this operation. Want to lose weight? Eat less and exercise.

this is only semi-related, but it's not uncommon for liver enzyme levels to rise during rapid weight loss. Big drops in weight are hard on livers. My enzyme levels were elevated my first year which freaked out my PCP, but then I read that it's not uncommon during rapid weight loss. Once my weight stabilized, my liver enzymes were normal again.

BUT....you evidently have something going on - but whatever it is may or may not be affecting your liver enzyme levels. The weight loss can do that. I hope they can figure out what is going on - that would be miserable!

There could be many reasons why your experiencing this & I hope they discover your cause soon & there’s a simple remedy. Out of curiosity did the nausea start when you moved to the purée stage? You may not be ready for denser food yet & may need to stay on liquids for a little longer. Did it start when you commenced your Multi Vitamins? They used to make me nauseous & I often threw up.

Have you contacted your surgeon? I’d give them a call.

As @catwoman7 said increased liver enzymes while losing weight is not unusual. My liver function was off & cholesterol levels rose & my doctors were concerned too. It all went back to my usual levels when I stopped losing. A lot of hormones, enzymes, etc are stored in your fat & as you lose weight they’re released into your blood stream causing the elevated levels. But it’s always better to have these things checked to ensure everything is really ok.

Good luck.

I’ve been in the hospital since Sunday and they ran some tests. So they conducted a endoscopy and stated I have stricture. They opened/stretched my stomach out some. It’s the day after and I still can’t keep my liquids down. I feel horrible. I’m having sharp pains now under my breast. I really need some answers. Did any of you have elevated Lipase levels? Mines is through the roof. It’s 567. I appreciate all of your input and suggestions.

As @arabesque mentioned, have you called your surgeon? The ED docs and general med docs for sure should be consulting with your surgical team-not all ED teams and inpatient medical teams are familiar with bariatric surgery patients.

I am so sorry you're going through this. I really hope the hospital has consulted with your surgeon and they are working together to find a solution for you.

Do you have anyone there who can be an advocate for you? Not only are you likely dealing with discrimination due to your body size, but also medical racism. I really hope your healthcare team is listening to you and doing everything they can.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
