POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Hey guys I had surgery March 3rd 2021. I am literally 2 days shy of 6 months and I am livid. I eat healthy, drink water all day, exercise everyday one hour and I didn’t hit my second weight loss goal and I doubt I will by my 6 month mark. I am 5’4 my pre surgery weight was 268 and I’m now 173. My overall goal is 145. I have hit several stalls month 4 and 5 not sure why. What are your stats and have you hit any stalls? When did your weightloss slow down what did you do to get the pounds back to dropping. My dr is happy with my weightloss but I am devastated by the slow process.

Hey everybody I’m about 5 days post op sleeve. I’m feeling very defeated, but also super laggy today. I feel so normal but not eating normal is messing with my brain. Does anyone feel like that, does it pass I’d love some guidance. I’m on the younger side so I don’t have anyone really to talk to about this because none of my friends have gone through this. I was also on the light side when i had it so I don’t feel I get any support from my friends because they don’t see the point. They don’t know all the medical conditions that brought me here. I’d love to have some support and maybe those who are further along have more advice.

I’m just under 5 weeks post op, and feeling very defeated. I’m just now starting to go into solid foods, soft solid foods though, and I have days where I can’t stomach much at all, but my weight loss is very slow. In total, including the pre-op diet I’ve lost 48lbs which is great, but around 27lb was from the pre-op diet. I read somewhere online that the average per week lost after gastric bypass was between 5-15lbs, and I’m definitely not getting anywhere near that, but then 15lb a week does sound crazy to me. It’s disheartening that I lost so much before surgery, but since surgery I feel like it’s been much slower, even though I c…

Hi all, Just curious. How far out are you and how many calories are you eating a day? I'm almost 5 weeks and am around 900-1000 everyday and I'm concerned maybe too much? Curious where everyone is.

I am 6 days post op and am exhausted. The pain is just about gone, but i feel dizzy and like i have to lay down all the time. Will i ever feel normal and have energy again? When did it start coming back?

  6. Started by Just Soso,

Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum, and I am two weeks post-op. After surgery, I feel like my surgeon lacks the support I need. So, if I have a question I kind of refrain from asking him. So I thought I would ask on here. Q: I am almost 3 weeks post op, and I stop losing weight. The day of surgery my weight was 251 and a week later I was 240. Now, my weight is just sitting at 241 no movement. I drink water and broth mostly. I do protein shakes as well. Anyone else experience this?

Hello all, I had my surgery October 1st, so this is day 10. I spend the first three nights in the hospital, and went home feeling pretty good. By afternoon the following day I was nauseous and I began to vomit. Because I could not keep water down I was re-admitted to the hospital. I struggled with potassium and magnesium, and my blood sugar straddled the line of low (68). We got the nausea under control and I have been home for two days without problems (yay), but I am still on clear liquid until I see my doc on Thursday. Before the complications I was advised to wait a week before starting supplements (I think partially to avoid sickness). However, my current di…

Hello All! I am day 5 post op and I still haven’t been able to tolerate anything chicken based. Has this happened to anyone else? I have tried chicken broth, bone broth, cream of chicken and cannot tolerate it. I have adjusted to veggie and beef with no problem. I have heard our taste buds change, but this is an aversion, it makes me nauseated and makes me cramp. The nurses stopped it at the hospital too so that I could be discharged.

  11. Started by T4ME,

Well it has been 5-6 days wince my surgery!! I had to stay two nights in the hospital then went home in immense pain. Up until today I have not been able to get no real anything down. the most I got was 10 ounces of plain water yesterday. I can not take these lovely bariatric chewable vitamins, they made me sick immediately. I feel like a baby in that at 7pm every night I seem to get "colicky"!! I am 52 but am blessed to have a husband that does not mind burping me!!! :) This morning I am feeling stronger, I have talked with my NUT and gone over everything. I have taken two very long walks managed to get down 12oz. of water an some protein shake. I feel like I can see a l…

Anyone ever have days where it feels like they never had the surgery? Where there appetite is like it used to be ? There’s no off switch and you don’t even dump after? It’s freaking me out and I don’t know how to reset or fix it. I’m 3 months out and I’ve lost 60plus but now I’m worried. Anyone have any advice?

  13. I’ve tried researching this myself but so much of the advice assumes you’re “cheating” and dealing with dumping syndrome. Has anyone else experienced EXTREME dizziness, flushing or cold sweats, and nausea right after eating a few bites or small meal? I’m 22 days post-op and for the last week or so I’ll have these absolutely horrible bouts right after I start or finish eating. It’s not after every meal and it seems totally unrelated to sugar/carbs/protein/fiber or any other obvious nutritional element. Half an hour ago I got two bites into one of those often recommended ricotta bakes and it hit me. At lunch today I had a tiny serving of mashed avocado and hummus …

Is anyone finding that post op they are having trouble differentiating between hunger and being full?

  15. Started by vikingbeast,

So I'm three weeks out and generally feel great, but lately I feel a pulling, and if I bend forward, I feel a sort of minor stabbing pain, just to the right of my navel. This did not happen right after the initial pain wore off. Normal? Is this just the nerves re-growing?

  16. Started by CurvyGirlJourney,

Hi everyone. I am two weeks postop and just started my soft foods today. Buffalo chicken dip sounded great, so I made some but not as spicy as normal. After I eat it, I was looking up about eating spicy foods after surgery and it sounds like I should not have done what I did. Do you think this will cause a problem? I’m kind of nervous that I may have damaged my stomach or something. I’m not having any pain. Thank you!

  17. Started by MaureenA,

Hi all, Wondering if anyone knows when the sour stomach and morning nauseous go away post surgery? I'm week 4 and it seems worse this week than it has been. I'm on an acid reducer.

  18. I had gastric sleeve surgery on September 20th and was losing weight pretty quick but it just stopped in the last few days! Is this normal? Is it going to pick up again? Has anyone else had this issue?

  19. Started by ShoppGirl,

I know it is empty calories and we are not supposed to have it in weight loss phase but I met my protein goal already and I counted the calories for a small portion of it. Only problem was I was able to eat ALOT more than I expected. Is popcorn a slider food? It didn’t seem like it was ever going to trigger my full feeling. Seems like I could have eaten the whole bag (it was 100 calorie bag but still).

My friend came over with his two little dogs last night. The 15 pounder was trying to lick me to death and she stepped on my stomach and now it really hurts NEAR the incision but not exactly on it. I'm three weeks out and the bandages and steri-strips have come off a while ago, and of course I was wearing a shirt but I'm just surprised at how much it hurts. I don't see any difference in the incision, and it doesn't feel hot to the touch or bruised or swollen. I took tylenol, but it didn't help. I'd try to call my surgery center, but they never return my calls. Any suggestions? Should I be concerned?

Hi there has anyone experienced an extremely slow weight loss after getting a bypass? I am close to my 5 month check up and have lost 45 pounds here but 10 of those were lost in the last two months. It’s been very discouraging to only lose 5 lbs per month. I have 22 more lbs to go to reach my goal here. I do understand that when you get to a lower weight it’s slows but this feels very slow... I do walk 3 miles daily drink 50oz of water, and keep calories under 700 daily with 80 grams of protein. The only thing I’ve done differently is add coffee back into my diet but have only been drinking one cup daily, I can’t imagine that would be enough to affect my weight loss, bu…

  24. Started by Bill_VT,

Hi all! Just wanted to introduce myself. I am a few days short of my two month post op anniversary (RNY). So far I have lost 66lbs (starting weight 470, highest weight 515). I am still on the chopped diet but I have been working in whole foods here and there. Still playing the "what's going to stay down" game, but enjoying the journey so far! I was kind of expecting a little more weight loss at this point but hell, any is better than none! I have hit a few stalls in the process but nothing longer than a few days. I look forward to "meeting" some of you!

  25. Started by Smanky,

I should have been expecting it, but I was way more focused on the post-surgery pain, but my wounds are now in full healing-itch phase and it's ... special. Given that I can't scratch OR gently slap the sites, I've taken an antihistamine and am trying to grin and bear it. And distract myself. Any tips? Or is this what I suspect it is - a "ride it out" part of the process. It'll be gone in a few days, I know, but if there's a trick to curbing it a little, I'm all ears!

Everyone whose has the bypass, when you could move to phase 3/soft food stage, what is the first thing you ate and how was it tolerated? All I want right now if a piece of chicken or cheese!

  27. Started by AngieL11282,

I'm wondering if I should be eating until I feel restriction? I'm talking about that first initial (tightness in chest for me) feeling... NOT getting sick miserable feeling. It seems like when I eat until I feel that I am much more satisfied and for much longer. When I stop before I feel it I am hungry an hour later. Thoughts?

Just got home, and thought I'd write my experience in before I knock myself out with more painkillers. Post op recovery was intense, but once they administered sufficient painkillers, I wasn't too bad. But this surgery is quite painful and the laparoscopic incisions look and feel like stab wounds so they're pretty tender. When my surgeon got in there, he discovered a large hiatal hernia I had no idea I had! He repaired it, so I pretty much had two surgeries for the price of one. The hernia explains the GORD, so with it fixed and the antireflux hitch stitch, I shouldn't be troubled by it long term. But I have extra abdominal tenderness from the repair as well as the O…

I am nine days post-op for a VSG. I read all the comments about how people take all day to finish a protein shake and I just don't. I have no troubles swallowing. I don't feel full (wasn't expecting to on liquids) but do know when I am full. But it only takes me about 30 minutes to finish a protein shake. I feel like I'm eating too much—about 600-700 calories a day, about 100g-120g of protein (which is what my doctor suggested), and getting 96 oz. or so of fluid in me. I obviously cannot chug anything, but I can take full mouthfuls of liquid. Am I just weird? I know I won't feel my restriction until I go on foods (which is still not unt…

Hey guys! I'm new here so first I would like to say hello to everyone I had my gastric sleeve done Aug 4th. At first I didn't struggle with keeping hydrated but the last few weeks I have been struggling getting in about 40-45oz a day. I try my hardest to keep drinking water, but sometimes I will catch myself just carrying around my water bottle but forgetting to actually drink. I hardly feel thirsty which I think is my problem. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any advice for me?

  36. Started by bossportsgal,

So I'm down 50 lbs since surgery (4 months) and feel great. My labs came back normal expect for my cholesterol didn't move. I'm so mad. Now my pcp wants to put me on medication. I heard they rapid weight lost can sometimes make cholesterol not move right away. Any one out there have this problem. It is genetics too in my family. I'm going to give it another three months to see if it lowers. I was not on meds before surgery so I can't imagine going on meds now? Hahha.

I have a gastric bypass revision in the morning at hospital Angeles with Dr. Corvala due to some anatomical issues and I am so incredibly nervous. I feel terrible for leaving my toddler and partner. The hospital and surgeon are highly accredited and great reviews but I’m still terrified. Please say nice things to help me relax lol

Hi, I had my surgery on 9/14 so I'm currently 10 days post-op. Today I moved from clear liquids to protein shakes. I like protein shakes, that's not my issue. I couldn't finish more than half of a shake, and it took me an hour to drink half of it. It was a 6oz shake, so I could only finish 3oz before nausea and fullness, it has been 4 hours I still can't drink any more of it without getting nauseous again. the brand is GNC isopure if that matters. My stage 2 diet is 64oz of water and 2 shakes, then 2oz puree if I can handle the first two. I'm mainly worried about my bones hair and overall health if this keeps up. I know it's only been one day and I'm probably overreacting…

I’m so sorry if this has already been asked and answered. I’m new here. Since day one, liquid, or purée (not on solids yet) no matter how fast or slow, how big the drink or bite is… there is a little bit of discomfort with every swallow. Not in my throat but lower, like between throat and stomach? Or maybe it is stomach, hard to tell. It’s like if I swallowed a giant pill and a bunch of air. (pre op). It’s not bad and this whole time I just assumed it was normal, didn’t even talk to my doc about it, because I didn’t think of it, but now I’m like wait… is this normal? Is this forever? Once in awhile it’s a little bit painful and I have a burp, so I assume that’s gas. …

I’m nervous. I am one week post op. I have been passing gas but one I almost farted but at the last minute realized it was diarrhea and almost pooped myself. I had a distal gastric bypass which is similar to the duodenal switch with malabsorption. Will this get better? I’m really afraid of becoming incontinent

Hello, I am 4.5 months after Sleeve surgery. I am very happy with the weight loss. I know hair thinning is common. I am seeing (for about 4 wks now), a substantial increase in my thinning. I am doing all I think I can. Noixin hair products, Rogaine, Biotin. My team says it is normal and will regrow. My question is....anyone experience this and did it regrow??

  44. Started by Rey Rodriguez,

I had my VSG the last week of June so I’m almost 10 weeks post op. I normally have really thick, long hair but the last few weeks I’ve lost so much hair that it’s about 50% gone. Most people I’ve read on here didn’t experience hair loss until later so I’m scared I might lose even more. How long until it stops and should I be worried about bald spots?

I’m hoping I’m not alone with this, or someone has some kind of advice. I had a gastric bypass and I’m now up to the puréed stage of the diet, but I’m really struggling. The food itself causes no issues, it’s the thought of the food that I can’t handle. Every time I think of puréed food, what I can eat, that I need to eat, anything to do with it, I feel so nauseous. I never had this issue with the liquid stage, it’s just the puréed stage, and because of the nausea I’m not eating enough. Has anybody else experienced this? If so what did you do? Is it just a case of forcing food down when I can and getting through this stage? …

Hello, This is my first time writing anything on here so I hope I do it right! So I had my mini gastric bypass on the 18th of August 2021 and since then I got my period twice and both times it lasted 8 days! and there is one week break between them and my actual period ended on the 12th. so that's 22 days of bleeding in one month and a half. I know these things can happen post-op but the weird thing is my last period ended on the 15th of September and I just started again 4 days later!! I'm very worried and confused tbh... If anyone knows if this is normal or not please let me know or if you have any suggestions on what might help.

Hey everyone! I am just over 6 weeks post-op and I read about stalls on here all the time. However, I have not yet stalled. I know, stalls are inevitable and eventually I will experience one, but are there others out there who haven't stalled early on? I hear so many patients stall around week 3 and I'm curious why I haven't stalled yet. I have been losing about 2 pounds a week since surgery - and I am definitely not complaining, just curious! ☺️

I recently came across an article that stated that a small percentage of women ‘miss the hormone’ mark in that they only lose 30-40 lbs total. This seems to only affect female sleevers. Has anyone heard of this phenomenon. I have been in a weight stall for almost 6 weeks and I have been researching articles to help explain what is happening when I came across this article. now on top of everything else I am questioning my decision not to have bypass over sleeve. I was terrified of bariatric surgery and thought that the sleeve was less invasive even with the lack of long term data on its effectiveness. To say the least I am totally demoralized at the moment a…

I had gastric sleeve on July 1. Any of you who have had sleeve surgery- did your stomach burn every time you took a sip of water or protein shake? I’m only allowed 2 oz of liquid at a time. I have to get 8 cups of water a day and 4- 2oz servings of protein shake a day. I can hold it down but it burns quite a bit
