I am trying to quit smoking after 12 years. My surgeon requires you to quit a minimum of 6 weeks prior to surgery. His nurse suggested I speak with my PCP about prescription aids. So far, from what I've read, chantix seems to have a higher success rate than Patches, gum ect.... Have you taken chantix? If so, what were the side effects you experienced? How long did you take chantix? Did it work for you? If so, how long have you been a non smoker? Even if you haven't tried chantix I would love to hear any and all tips on how you kicked the habit. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

To my understanding, Everyone who has weight loss surgery will be put on PPI before & after surgery. However, they are causing severe damage to our kidneys! With knowing this information, Will you still take them? Me: I'm very concerned about taking PPI's....I have refused them so far but, I get my surgery date tomorrow and I know my surgeon will prescribe them to me.....not sure what do ??? So I see so many have a liquid pre op diet for weeks before surgery but my surgeon said I only have to do a liquid diet for 24 hrs before surgery and I don't know why everyone else has to do a week or more but my surgeon doesn't require it. Anyone have any ideas why? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi! I've just joined. I'm from Long Beach CA and I'm having surgery at Kaiser Harbor City on March 20. I did an orientation and nutrition class with Dr. LePort's office in Orange county last August but then had to switch insurance. I met with Dr. Zane at Kaiser for the 1st time last week and he put me on the schedule for next month and told me I have to lose weight, shooting for 30 pounds, by March 15. I wasn't given a diet to follow aside from drinking a 160 calorie Protein shake for dinner each night. I went home in a panic and researched pre-op diets. I'm flying blind! I've cut down carbs and fat as far as possible (no bread, rice, Pasta, quinoa, cerals, grains torti…

I'm concerned about how well I'll be able to perform my academic duties during clinical rotations after surgery. I've read that people have to constantly sip fluids through the day. Is this for the rest of our lives? I'm currently in the phase when I'm competing for a seat in the program so clinicals wouldn't be until Fall of 2019 at the soonest. I'm looking at getting a VSG this summer. That many years out, do any sleevers go without food or drink for up to 3 or 4 hours? I might be able to sneak sips in some settings, but if I'm in the OR, I can't keep stepping out or bring a drink with me.

After months of flirting....looks like I have a hot date for Valentine's Day! My surgeon, Stephen Fowler, is pretty dashing, I suppose! , I'm Dan. A longtime lurker here at BariatricPal and the various #WLS/#VSG hashtags on Instagram (hey, liquid pre-op diet, so I'm lucky.) Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself. Would be awesome to get to know other Sleevers. Would love to go to a meet-up or event in the future. Until then, maybe some Facebook, Instagram, MyFitnessPal buddies? Anyway. Here is my first video; it's a lot dryer than this post, alas. I'm terrible on camera. But I do outline some goals for myself, vague as they are.

Hello All, I have the date for my gastric bypass surgery on March 22, 2017. Still waiting though to hear from insurance, but that's why it was a good idea that the pre-approval documents were sent out in advance. Anyways, my parents are bugging me about the fact that they think I should go for the Gastric Sleeve instead of the Gastric Bypass. They tell me nothing new out of what I read, and I've read a lot.........a hell lot of material, kinda like reading War and Peace, but on Bariatric Surgery. I am fully aware of the complications from the Gastric Sleeve vs. the Gastric Bypass. However there is one reason I am interested in the Gastric Bypass OVER the Gastric…

So today I went to see my PCP to sign my letter of reccomendation for surgery and she flipped the script on me. When I started the process in October she was on board with everything. She was aware of everything needed to be done and said the letter isn't a problem. Gave me the letter in writing, I just needed to type it. Today she tells me she's not sure if it's a good idea due to my chronic skin condition that I have (hidradenitis suppurativa). Said she mentioned it to a dermatologist I also see in her office and they both are against it now. Excuse my language but what type of shit is that??? I go in for my last weigh in and nutrition appointment next wk. Not even sur…

I will be doing my liquid diet starting March 12th. I am wondering for those whom have already gone through the diet, how can I prepare myself better. I am stocking up on my Protein shakes, broth and Vitamins but I am wondering, what are some other things I can get to ensure that I don't fall off of my diet ? I would really like some insight. Thank you.

Do you know people who have had bariatric surgery and they are still big years out? I've got friends on both sides, ones who have lost a tremendous amount of weight and ones who lost a little and have gained back. I am worried I will fail, my dad failed but I believe he failed because he didn't change his diet. His doctor told him he could eat the same just less, which is not true. I am fully aware that its a lifestyle change! Did these friends just not change their eating habits or is it genetics? I just don't want to fail, I would be devastated. I know every one is different and I believe you get what you put into it. I'm 2 weeks from surgery day and I guess my n…

Hi guys, I was just wondering what I should expect with nutrition classes. I have mine on 2/28 at Brookwood Hospital in Al. I know all places are different, but it would make me feel better to kind of have an idea of what to expect. They gave me a book about the surgery and some topics they may touch on, and I've read the book 20 times front to back and I guess it's not making me feel better because I'd rather someone who has been through it talk to me. This is the last thing I have to do before they submit everything to my insurance. So, fingers crossed that I can get approved. The sooner I can have surgery, the better. Thank you guys, reading things here have mad…

They say the best supporters are the ones that are getting it done too. About me. I'm 6'3 445. Heaviest I have ever been. I weighted in at the DR. Office and wanted to cry! Was hard for me. I'm 40 single male. Been feeling a bit lonely lately. The biggest reason I'm doing this is that I want to be healthy and happy again. I hide my emotions from people a lot. Hard to let some stuff out. I have 3 more calls left and a visit and than they set up the surgery. Sent from my iPhone using BariatricPal

Tomorrow I have my pre assessment at the hospital. I have managed to lose a bit of weight though all the dietician did say was that they didn't want me to put on so I guess that's something I already feel so much better since being excepted to have the operation. I am actually looking into what I am eating and have managed to quit a 15 year smoking habit without vapes or nicotine Patches. As I based in the U.K. Would anyone else be able to say whether they will give me a date tomorrow. I am expecting to have bloods but not sure what else

Hi all! I began working with my WLC in the beginning of November and had decided that bypass was the right choice for me. Reason being that I had acid reflux for most of my life. Today I met my surgeon (he was so wonderful I was so suprised!) and he told me he thought that the sleeve would be the best option for me and my weight loss. I listened to him explain why he believed all of this and I trust his medical opinion. My trouble is I have spent my last year reading blogs, stories, and posts galore on bypass. Any sleevers out there have some advice on recovery and the long run? Submitted my paperwork and they said they would shoot to have surgery the first week in februa…

Hi everyone! Finished my 6 month weight management and got all my ducks in a row for my UHC insurance and finally spoke to surgeon last Monday. I did my research and since I have occasional heartburn, I heard it can get a lot worse with the sleeve so had my mind set on RNY. However my iron levels have been low, 11.5, and the surgeon is suggesting Sleeve instead. Did anyone have this issue or had RNY with low iron levels? Sent from my E6715 using BariatricPal mobile app
