Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

I have been stuck (scale # wise) for about 8-9 weeks now despite good diet choices and tons of cardio and strength training. I hurt my ankle falling on the ice 2 weeks ago and needed to take some time off the gym. I was worried that I would start gaining but BOOM....the scale DROPPED 3 pounds! Now I am back to working out and the scale is up 2 more.....my gut tells me no, but I have to question if I need to cut back on the workouts in order for the scale to start moving down again. Also, I was at the gym yesterday morning and I almost passed out for some reason. I am just so frustrated!!! Any suggestions??? thanks, Katie

I just bought the zumba game for the Wii. It comes with a belt that you slip the wii remote into. The belt size is about 50 inches but you could easily add more velcro. The game itself is a pretty good workout but if you don't like latin/international music I don't recommend it. I could see this game being hard for people who aren't coordinated on their feet. I used to dance/cheerlead so I picked up the dance moves pretty fast. I liked that you could choose between a single routine or a class session. Theres tons of different dances to choose from and each one has a beginner, intermediate and expert stage. A workout calendar is also programmed in the game that you can cu…

Seriously...I understand that you are simply unable to eat that much after having surgery, but eventually when the stomach has healed you're expected to only eat 1200 calories? Any nutritionist will tell you that 1200 calories is not enough for the average person (not average as in average = overweight, but average as in what we should be eating). After finding your BMR (basal metabolic rate) which is how many calories your body burns just in the process of lounging about and doing its normal biological functions, you need to figure out how many calories your body expends during your average day. This is why most people should really be eating 1500 - 2000 for their wei…

http://www.exercisetv.tv/workout-videos/walking/2-mile-walk-5861 I really enjoyed it!! It was much harder than I imagined, and it only took up a few feet of space (my apartment is really REALLY tiny so thats good!). This is a good one if you are feeling lazy, or it's really cold outside. Or for me, when I walk outside I always day dream and end up walking slow, this helped me keep my pace and she keeps you motivated. There are quite a few variations of this on Exercise TV, and i know there are DVDs available. Actually a lot of nice stuff on that website, if you haven't been there before.

  9. Hey everyone I am off track on dieting and losing weight and need to get back on track. I have heard that some people go back on the 2 week pre op diet to get themselfs back on track. Have you tried this? Did it get you back on track/ Did you lose weight? if so how much? Just trying to figure out if this is what I need to do. Thanks!

So I got a P90X set on Ebay for my boyfriend and I. I'm not starting it for another couple of weeks, once I'm cleared for more intense exercise, but we have to go shopping for supplies this weekend. Can someone enlighten me as to what I need? The introductory video mentioned a set of weights and yoga mats, but I think I've also seen something about a resistance band set. Is anyone familiar with it? I'm wondering if I need different bands, or if one set of bands is sufficient.

Started a new type of workout at Crossfit. i have only been twice and both times during the workout I have gotten really lightheaded & nauseated. What exactly is causing this...increased heart rate, my blood sugar dropping??? Just want to prevent it from happening - so embarrassed to need to lay down for fear of passing out. I drink plenty of water during the day and usually have some kind of light snack about 30 minutes before the workout. Does anyone have any suggestions for me.

Hi all, I'm not banded yet. Have one week left before my last dietician visit (yay). I have a decent size pannus from 3 kids, 2 were c-sections. I am a big girl but fairly fit. Anyhow, I've started jogging and it's going well, been able to ramp up my runnin time quite a bit. My pannus keeps getting in the way, my "upper" belly is kind of lean and hard, but the lower one hangs to my hip bones and is annoying when i run. I also get some pain and tugging. Any suggestions ? I know it's a strange question!

Hey everyone! I am so excited because I jogged 2.1 miles without stopping! This is the first time I went running since 9th grade (which was almost 15 years ago)!! I'm so thrilled. My fiance and I went to our gym at our apartment and all of the ellipticals were taken, so I said why don't we come back later. And he said why don't we just try to take a run? I was a little apprehensive but I just said sure, thinking we'd run and walk. Well we were able to jog the entire way! It was slow (probably 3.0-3.5 mph) but it was still so exciting! I've really wanted to run since I got the band and now I'm extra motivated to do it! Yay!

I am getting frustrated...well first, let me tell you that I did something that I said I would not do, and that was weigh every day. I started the gym on Monday with a trainer, and have now been 3 days straight. I have or had lost about 22 lbs, but now the scale has me at just 20 lbs. A 2 lb gain in 3 days? I am just 3 weeks out from my surgery and on high protien drink for breakfast, sliced turkey/cheese stick for lunch and about a 3/4 cup of chili for dinner. So the calories and fat are rather low. It just makes me frustrated. I guess I need to stay off the scale and only weigh 1 x a week like my original plan was...but that scale makes me curious!

Hi! I was banded on January 21 and my doctor said I could start moderate exercise next week. I have the hardest time motivating myself to go to the gym or even go walk outside. I was wondering if there was anyone else that was banded that needs a workout buddy. I live in the heights, so I'm in central Houston. I know it's probably a long shot, but I thought it would be worth a try! I would actually love to have a personal trainer, but they're too expensive. Maybe there's a way to get a discount or split the costs if you go to the trainer with a buddy??? Anyway, if you're in my area and interested please let me know!

Hi there. Wondering if anyone has experienced having pain in the port area after doing abdominal work outs? And, if so how long did it take the muscles to finally settle down & the pain to lesson? I'm 3 months post op and while i realize that i'm working muscles that have worked this hard since contractions during delivery almost 7 years ago, but the pain i have after wards around my port can be quite unbearable sometimes. All my ab muscles themselves are sore, but that i can understand as that it's a new routine and they are rebuilding & getting stronger. Let me start by saying that I hate exercising. I hate sweating, I hate feeling sore, and I hate being out of breath. I was so frustrated the past month and a half because 3 weeks after surgery, I stopped losing weight. I was bouncing back and forth between 281-286. Nothing worked. I was counting calories and making sure I ate enough, eating tons of Protein, and walking but NOTHING! I finally found what works. I'm watching what I eat more carefully, and finally I've found an exercise program that works. I get bored easily and was thrilled that my mom bought me Just Dance 2 for the Wii for Christmas. I do about 6 dances every morning. I also started the 30 Day Shred by Ji…

  29. I teach Zumba 4 times a week currently.. and I'm really afraid that it's going to take me forever to get back to teaching my classes once i am banded. I can keep it at low impact, and reduce ab work.. but when i ask my surgeon he tells me "a few weeks". I guess I'm looking for a more difinitive answer, and maybe some personal stories if you returned to aerobics!

On Saturday, I jogged my first mile in many many years. I had to really push myself thru it, but I did it! I have been jogging/walking 3 miles over the pat month and have only been able to actually jog 1/2 mile at a time. I seem to run out of air before my legs give out. Any suggestions on how to get my breathing under control? I'm really looking forward to being about to jog the entire 3 miles. This exercise has really helped with the weight loss and has resulted in lots of inches lost.

Hey Everybody, I've been enjoying getting into high gear with my workouts, especially since I've started Spin class and using my XBox 360 Kinect. But I am finding that my workout partner (my husband) is not as motivated as me. And when he doesn't feel like working out, he tries to discourage me. I don't know if it's on purpose or what. But I am kinda feeling like I am in this by myself. Most of my friends are either broke or live out of town, so I don't have anyone to work out with! It's very frustrating. So my question is...how do you stay motivated when you're by yourself?

Many of y'all know I used to work out big time. Weight training, one hard day of cardio, and major toning. In February, I had my gallbladder removed, and kicked the workout bug to the curb (Doc's orders for 6 weeks post gb removal), and never got my mojo back. SO, in attempts to put it out in the universe; DECEMBER 1st, I'm hitting the gym again. I have a mini-gym in my garage, and I'm going to start lifting again, and do 2 days of cardio and toning. I'm flabby, and jiggly everywhere except my calves and lower thighs. I can only attribute that to wearing heels constantly. I know I'd do better with an accountability partner, but none of my friends here have the time…

Anywho, I am getting married in 3 months and bought my wedding dress one size smaller than I wearing now. It fits great except for have about another inch to go in the rib cage area before it zips up. I need some exercise suggestions to start losing inches in the chest/rib/back area. So far I just keep losing weight and inches, but haven't seen much loss in that area of my body. At least I still have my boobs!! :-)

One of the things I'm looking forward to after surgery is getting back to playing. Exercise and I do not get along. I have never ever liked exercise. But my intelligent brain tells me I need to exercise so I have to reconcile that with the dislike of it. What can I do? Well, my solution to the problem is to find something I think is fun and work that. I tried to think of the things I like to do. Read - no good, not enough moving, surfing the internet - no good, the only work out I get is with my fingers, so I thought back to when I was younger what did I like, I loved dancing. I grew up in Oklahoma and I would go country dancing. I loved it. I lost weight because of it, it was fun and I was good at it. Well, now that I am living in Canada, not…

I have not ran since I can remember when I actually ran in place tonight AND finished the activity!
