Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by hopeandfaith,

I'm one week out today! I've been doing VERY well until last night I just had a rough night. Woke up and my stomach is cramping. I think I messed up when I took a few sips of a spicy Soup my daughter made. Paid for it last night and still paying for it. LOL My family keeps asking me if I've exercised yet. So I'm asking, when should I start to exercise? I've been walking a little around the yard but like when should I get on my treadmill? After yesterday I don't want to mess up again so I'm reaching out to the EXPERTS HERE!!!

I was given two of these as, seen on TV gadgets, for Christmas. i took one back to Walgreens and the other still sits in the box. Has anyone tried them yet? Weight loss gadgets flood the markets constantly and the only ones that seem to stay are a good pair of sneakers and a couple of heavy books or cans to use as weights. Thanks

Hi everyone! Just a question. I am 3 months post op lap band and have really started to kick up my workout routine. I've done mainly walking up until recently but have started "boot camps" and more cardio type workouts in moderation. Anyways, no matter the level of my workout, I have noticed that I dont sweat near as much as I did before - just barely. My face turns more red than I sweat. Is anyone else experiencing this and is it normal?

I am 2 weeks out and I figure that an exercise bike would be great. Plus it was free and is in really good shape. Any ideas to keep me motivated? Or is it just a will power thing? Thanks in advance.

At 280 pounds without being able to do much walking in the winter between sidewalk conditions and so dark so early I am kinda lost for exercise. I do have a set of 2 pound hand weights and could definately get a aerobics step but would prefer to not spend a fortune on equiptment. Anyone know of a fairly simple dvd for those who are not so coordinated and not ready for something killer hard?

I had my surgery a week ago and I decided to do 15 mins on the treadmill today, just walking slow pace until my wounds heal. My idea is to increase every week 5 mins and just keep up the walking, moving the incline and mixing it up. The thing is, I hate exercise but only when it seems like a chore. Walking on the treadmill is ok and I figure it's better to do that than nothing. I'm hoping to do that for 3-4 months until I'm fitter and weigh less and then I can start out on some slow jogging but I think it's more important to introduce new habbits when you are an exercise phobe, rather than overwhelming yourself. There have been MANY a time in the past, when I have been…

I had my surgery 12/27 and the first week was great but I was feeling exhausted. Now, I just moved onto soft foods and for the last few days I've been feeling wonderful! When can I start "hard core" workouts? I've been walking and going about my regular routine but am so excited to started the 30 day shread again. I'm going to call my doctor on Monday but would love any advice. Thanks!

  9. Ok so some of my friends on the banded in Sept thread wanted to help support each other in exercising. Of course others are welcome if you want to join a support thread for exercising! I think some of the idea is to be able to state goals (no matter how small) and have encouragement when achieving those goals. Of course other talk about excercise woes and ideas are welcome. I'll start, I was banded on Sept 27 2010. I'm from Ohio. Before band I was walking about 5 miles per week at a rate of 3 miles/hour. and going to yoga once a week. I have a short term goal of walking 7 miles per week by Thanksgiving. Maybe upping the speed a bit but I'll work on that l…

It seems that there are a lot of Body Bugg users on here and I'm considering getting one (will be banded in 2 weeks). I'm wondering if anyone uses it with their iphone, how well it works, and if it is worth it. I find the bodybugg website difficult to navigate and I would love some product reviews. I already record my calories consumed in the my iphone with myfitnesspal. I'm hoping to just do the same with the bodybugg app. Thanks!

I know exercise isn't supposed to be comfortable but for me it actually kills me. I have patellofemoral knee pain- basically my knee caps don't track right, they rub against my bones and cause horrible pain in my knees. I also have a pinched nerve in my back that causes pain in my leg. Most times I can't get through a 30 minute walk without being in extreme pain and when I try to really workout I end up with other pains. A few years ago I joined a gym. I worked out consistently and saw results but then I had to ditch the gym and start going to physical therapy instead. The exercise had made my knees flare up badly and I had illiotibial band pain- basically I couldn't m…

I realized today that the biggest obstacle for me to getting exercise this winter is going to be going to the gym, which I hate. Let me be clear, I don't hate the exercise, I hate the physical act of going to the gym. My nearest gym is in a heavily trafficked mall. I hate the traffic, the crappy parking spots, having to walk through hoards of teenagers to get to the gym, waiting in line to give the guy at the desk my card, the locker room that smells like an armpit, finding an empty locker NOT right next to a naked man who always seems to take WAY too long to change clothes, and after the workout debating whether to walk through the hoards of teenagers again as I'm…

Hi Everyone I have been banded since August and had 2 fills but not had much weight loss success yet. I am going on holiday in 5 weeks and some friends were really recommending the vibration training/power plate things for inch loss. As I have not told anyone about the lapband I couldn't ask this question there, but do you think it is ok for me to use the power plates or can they harm the lapband. A special offer is going on if you take a 4 week package at the moment but I didn't want to sign up without confirming if it was safe. Thanks MD

I know I should start to work on strength a little more. I am fairly good at getting my cardio in - we have a treadmill and a recumbent bike at home in front of a projector so I can watch TV and movies while walking/running/biking. I also still have a gym membership with Snap Fitness but I find it very hard to make time to go there. I guess I am more of a home body and I like to be at home after work (or out partying, but that's a different story). So, I just got the Aldi newsletter, and they seem to have a good selection of "New Year's resolution" equipment. I would love to get their kettle bell set which includes 5, 10 and 15 pd weights and the set is $25. I guess w…

I have been training for a 5k on 03/27/11. Now that I have scheduled my revision for 01/17/11... I am thinking this may not be a good idea? Will that be too soon after surgery? Realistically I would need to pick up back on my training at LEAST 6 weeks prior to the 5k... and that is just shy of a month out of surgery.

I'm starting the Couch to 5K program this coming week and found some great podcasts to download that break down the times for you. Anyone else try this program to get started with running? I use to ran about 7 years ago then had knee surgery and never picked it up. I'm hoping this will get me started again!

  27. Good morning everyone! Well it's a new month and new opportunity to get off that couch and find something that entertains you to move, move, MOVE!! I finally purchased a higher end treadmill that can withstand a heavy girl such as myself and go easy on my jacked up knees. I have arthritis going on in there, in case you didn't know or even cared. I LOVE MY TREADMILL!!!!!!! I can actually walk on it without pain! It's so awesome, because that was the one thing I truly "enjoyed" doing as far as burning calories. That being walking and hopefully again jogging and even running. To get to my jogging and running again I'll need to drop at least 40-60 lbs (I gained mos…

Hey guys I got a problem. I bought all these fitness DVDs that I cannot do cause I'm too uncoordinated. Yes I'm the relative that can't do the shuffle cause I can't get it right. I've been doing the Leslie Sansone walk 3 miles vid.. I repeat the first mile twice cause the second is too cmplicated. Anyone knows of any workout vids for people like me uncoordinted?

  29. Started by cocolove,

Clash Of The Gods dvd was A docu-drama of sorts. I enjoyed the insight of those presenters and the clarification on various points that I may have forgotten from High School. I did find the acting a bit stiff even for a Documentary but it accomplished the task. This would be a good intro for a freshman in HS who is not sure what to make of the Greek Gods of old. It may help inspire them to read and learn more. I would buy Clash Of The Gods dvd set again as a gift.

All, I'm about 2.5 months post op, and have started working out with a personal trainer at the gym. Needless to say, it's not going well...and so I'm very interested in some feedback from those of you who have been excercising for a while....please. When the trainers at the gym see a "big" person, they think "burn calories". In fact, I do not wish to burn calories, but rather, (based on my research), my goal is to build lean muscle mass. That said, I want to do High Intensity, High Weight training. That means, I want to work with 2 sets, 8-10 reps, of high weight to the point of muscle failure. This way, when I break down my muscle, my body will work to "buil…

  33. I joined 24hr last Monday. I've gone to the group classes every day last week, and now this morning. Don't get me wrong, I love working out and have a great time...BUT the skinny's make me super jealous! I hate looking at myself in the mirrrors, but it's kind of hard not to when they're all around you in the class. Some people seem unfriendly, which doesn't help. Others are pretty nice. (This is a note to myself to be nice to new people when they start.) How do you deal with it? Workout and ignore everyone else? It doesn't help either when I'm taking Zumba and don't know the moves yet like everyone else!

I have Fibroymyalgia so I'm very concerned about how much I will be able to exercise after surgery. However, I do have many tools and hopefully I have the drive and will power. I was part of a 'pain management group' at a local hospital last year and they taught us how to manage pain without meds. A huge part of that was exercise. I bought a few DVD's that I was really impressed with and had fun doing with the group. Unfortunately, they've been gathering dust for many months but I'm counting on them to get me started on a more active lifestyle. Once I am working out and no longer feeling sore afterwards, do I start to increase the weights or reps? So far, I've been walking on the treadmill (3.5 - 4.0 mph) for 20 minutes and doing the elliptical for 20 minutes (4.0 mph). Then I have added some ab and arm exercises. I feel great after each workout and really wish I would have started this sooner. How long will it be before I start seeing a difference?

Hi there, I'm new to this website. Looks like a great place to help each other out. I had lapband surgery on 10/2/10. I've been working out on my elliptical since the middle of October, 6 days a week, 32-35 minutes each workout plus I alternate my works with resistance, spped bursts and distance. In the Spring I would like to transition to running. My first objective is to run a 5K race in early May, 2011. Have any of you transitioned from elliptical to running and how did that work for you and would you have any suggestions to make the transition as easy as possible. I ive in Minnesota so I probably do want to start to run outside until late March, early April.
