I've been tracking my daily liquid and Protein intake, and am losing fine, and feeling great. But then my daughter asked me how many calories a day I am taking in, and in reviewing my logs, I am only taking in under 600 calories a day! Is that going to mess up my metabolism? I'm only 3 weeks post surgery-- will it all work out with increased portions over time? (I'm presently at 3-4 oz. meals, with Liquid Protein in between).

I currently weigh 160. I have about 20 more pounds to lose. I'm eating 1200-1400 calories a day. I get less than 100 grams of carbs and between 70-100 grams Protein. This week I added exercise. I've been doing 30 minutes on the treadmill daily. My weight has gone up a pound. A friend told me that I should eat more, but I'm scared to do that because I don't want to gain any more and I have a hard enough time eating the 1200 calories some days. How do you go about finding a good calorie goal?

How soon after VSG surgery is it allowable to do these things? I know I can't do core training or strength conditioning for 6-8 weeks (or longer) but I can jog and sprint, right?

I've lost over 100 pounds since last Thanksgiving. Today it occurred to me that someone out there must of divined how many calories there are in a pound of fat. When Googling it the answer I keep coming up with is 3500. https://encrypted.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&q=how+many+calories+in+a+pound+of+fat&aq=f&aqi=g2&aql=&oq= There are many days that I've lost a pound a day while eating a little less than 1000 calories a day. There is no way that I am running up a deficit of 3500 calories per day. I wasn't even exercising and the fat was melting off. How can 3500 be right? What am I not seeing in this "formula"

Okay...this is kind of random, but thought I'd see if I'm the only one with an issue out there. I started working out this week after losing 60 pounds with no exercise. I still have about 25 to go and the only way I'm going to do it is to get my butt in the gym. What I learned is all this excess skin and flab in my belly area jiggles and bounces and flops. It's actually quite uncomfortable. Anyone else with this problem? What do you wear? I feel like I won't be comfortable unless I wear a Spanx bodysuit!

Hi everyone, I got banded on january, and have lost 16 k.G since, eventhough I haven't moved a muscle... Lately, I haven't been losing weight at all, and I feel like I'm begining to have extra skin... so I figured to help lose weight and to look better when I lose the weight, I need to work out... i have never worked out my whole life... i'm 23 and have never been so active.... and now I read here about so many kinds of work outs that i don't even know that they mean.. I don't even know if we have it here in my country.... So any ideas? I read somewhere on this site that I should start with weight lifting and then do something different and not start with cardio, that f…

I'll be 2 weeks post op tomorrow. I will be on a liquid diet until tomorrow. I tried walking on the treadmill at a easy pace several time now, but I feel so weak and I get light headed easliy. Anyone else have this problem? My doctor isn't concerned with the amount of Protein I'm taking in at this point. I'm wondering if that's the problem. Thanks!

I used to do Mixed Martial Arts and haven't been in about 2 years. Made it up to my High Red Belt (3 away from Black) and had to stop because of work and over all health. Today I just signed up for Fitness Kick Boxing at my Dojo because I figured if I'm going to go back and get my Black Belt, I'm going to have to get in shape otherwise Imma gonna get my ass kicked LOL. Wish me luck!!!!

Hi all, I just wanted to suggest to all of those that hate most cardio...I do too but I found a solution...the rowing machine! I believe most gyms have them. They do not require you to put all of your weight on your legs so are great for those of us early in our journeys. Now I love rowing and can go for an hour at a fast speed...although this will not replace walking, which you should do more of as you lose weight. Shauna

I'm still pre-op but already have an overhanging belly as a result of 2 C-sections. I have been walking and added in little spurts of running. When I run, my belly slaps against me and makes a loud clapping sound. What can I do to help this as I know it will only get worse as I lose weight.

I saw the infomercial for KettleWorx and just had to get it. It's just an exercise routine using the kettle bells instead of regular weights. It's something different and looks pretty intense. Has anyone here tried it? I'm going for my third fill Thursday so between the two, I really hope I can start losing again.

Okay so I work out 40 minutes of cardio in the mornings. I'm working my way slowly up to an hour. I am now going to start lifting in the evenings as well probably about 20-30 minutes starting out, nothing hardcore or heavy. I just want to do some lightweight toning, small weights, leg exercises and situps..etc. My question being I just recently moved my calories up to 1200 because I was only eating 1000 but I saw a huge stall on the scale and figured I wasn't eating enough. Should I leave it at 1200? Or will the lifting in the evenings cause me to need to increase my calories too? Thanks for your input!

I purchased a Mini Cycle this weekend. Sears had a no frills one for $20 last weekend. It's just like a bike except you have no wheels and use your own chair. I guess really it's just a pair of pedals! Anyhow, I love it. Not sure if anyone else has tried this or taken one to work but it's great. Being able to pedal away some stress during the day is great and for the times I just need a second to myself, I can pedal then too. Not sure that it's burning many calories but I can really feel the muscles in my legs, thighs and even my butt. It must be doing something! It's also really quiet so I'm not bothering anyone with it. I do have the privacy of my own little cubicle s…

Has anybody else had any issues with their port getting disturbed when you bend over? I am only 2 weeks post op, so this might be a recovery issue. I have a heck of a time when I need to bend down to pick up my toddler or something off the floor. My port is in my upper abdomen. It is at just the right position that it get pushed up by my jean's waistband when I bend. Ouch! It hurts. The pain is less than it was a few days ago. Also, I am learning new ways to bend off to the left so I don't disturb my port on the right. I wonder if this "port catch" pain will go away as I heal? As my stomach gets flat? Ever?

A couple of weeks ago I we had a nice day and I went to the bike store by the trail to rent a bike just to see if my old arse could still keep one up right. I went out and rode for 2 hours! I LOVED IT! So I bought a bike right on the spot! Now everyday it is semi decent out I hit the trails! At least 2 hours at a time! Of course I did not stop at the bike, there was a bike rack, a helment, bike clothes, shoes................................ I sit at work on nice days and just long to be out riding my bike.

I had the lap band put in on 4-08-10 . I have lost 148 pds. and have really slowed down on the weight loss. I need to lose another 80 pds atleast. I joined a gym this week. I have worked out three days in a row and all cardio . The problem is I have gained 3 pds. in the three days. I dont understand why. I can honestly say that the scale has always went down or stayed the same not went up. I guess my question is , is this normal and will it start going back down.

I made it back to my favorite Zumba class for the first time since November when I injured my leg! I've been working up to this day for a while as my pt did not want me doing any high impact activities. I finally got the go ahead and told myself I would only do 30 min but once I got in there I was having so much fun I didn't want to stop! I am so excited I just had to share. It's perfect timing because I just changed up my diet and exercise routine this week and I'm already seeing the difference.

I was up at 0630 (which is sleeping in now!!) and drank a small glass of milk. Since my tummy seems a little sour in the mornings I wanted something in there right away but didn't want to eat anything before I ran! We took the metro into the district and it was great to ask more questions of my friends who have been there done that a lot with races! We were all happy go lucky just having a good ole time! Get to the race area and of course I have to pee! LOL Hit the ICKY potty and get "in line" to go! We all started together but that didnt' last long! I was SO COLD but so Excited and pumped up! I started to jog soon and then run and then walk and run and walk and b…

Just a quick overview.....I had 4 port replacements last year due to faulty ports, leaking flipping and slow leaks etc....(how lucky am I LOL) I have only had my lap band since November 09 and I am just now at a good fill level for the first time ever, due to many interuptions with the ports as when they replace them you pretty much have to start all over again. Needless to say its been a long and at times painfull process...but I can add well worth it being 36.5 kilos down to date.....still more to go but hey im on my way Anyway I have been out from my last surgery almost 6 months and I have just started at the gym and seem to be going well but......when it comes to an…

Hi Everyone, I should be banded within the next couple of months, and I think I have most of the diet and exercise issues resolved except for one. My husband and I are boaters and enjoy cruising (think RVing on the Water.) We are often in areas or conditions where getting off the boat so I can walk is not possible. Does anyone have any suggestions for exercises I can do in a small space with no equipment? My husband is a SCUBA diver, so I can use his ankle and "bean bag" weights. Any ideas you have will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

So at 280 pounds still and 8 months post op I have just joined a gym. I bought myself a pair on non $6 walmart sneakers (who knew sneakers had arches) and loaded up my little ipod. I have gone 4 nights this week after work doing 1 mile walking at a 2.4 speeed on the treadmil and 1/2 mi. on the recumbant bike or vise versa, and surprisingly I dont hate it. I didn't want to eat dinner then go but was also scared of having a blood sugar issue (happened at water aerobics twice) since lunch is usually a salad at 1pm and gym is about 6-7p. 2 nights I tried a greek yogurt at 4pm and that worked fine as did having 4-5 bites of supper and reheating the rest when I get home. …

Hi all, I need some words of wisdom. I signed up to do a 5K which is at the end of May. I was doing well ... jogging on the treadmill at a speed of 4.8 or so for a distance of about 1.5 miles. Now, since the race is getting closer, I have tried to start jogging outside and I hit a block every time I hit a mile. I know running outside is harder but it has been at least 2 weeks of every other day running that I am at a one mile wall! I feel sore, tight, and frustrated! Any advice? Thanks! Katie

I'm getting banded this Friday, and I'm kinda freaked out about the thought of all that skin just hanging around. I'd really rather not have PS; although, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. What I'm wondering about is how successful exercise is in treating excess skin. I've done lots of research on it. Some people swear that if you exercise enough the skin will eventually shrink; while others say that you'd have to exercise enough to completely replace the fat with muscle in order for you not to have excess skin. I was wanting to hear it straight from people who've gone through it. I know that it depends on a lot of factors (age, genetics, etc.), but have you guy…

I was wondering what you guys think about less cardio and more focus on muscle. I am so afraid of access skin, that I want to just focus on muscle with yoga and resistance bands. My husband says, I will already loose weight with the band so no need for intense cardio. Just a thought. Thanks everyone.

Okay, I'm pretty new to this whole exercise thing and I don't know much about what you're supposed to aim for as for as a burn off. I just do it until I get really tired. Now, I don't know how accurate the calorie counters on exercise machines are, but in an average day I do about 20 minutes on the treadmill at work and about 30-45 minutes at home on my gazelle. Sometimes I mix it up and do the rowing machine at work, or the exercise bike, but that hurts my butt (that's another story for another time). Anyway, today for example, the two of those things combined said that I burned a total of 1,010 calories. I only ate 640 calories though. Does that mean I'm going to …

Hey fellow banders! Well its been almost 6 months and i've gone down 60 #, off all medications. I'm happy but not completely content just yet. Goal is a solid 185 lean muscle. I'll get there. But in the mean time I have become so active and loving life. But I am wondering if anyone knows the answer to these questions? 1.) Are we allowed to get into Mixed Martial Arts? 2.) Can we Scuba Dive? 3.) How about sky diving? 4.) Is the band always going to be so visible through the skin? 5.) What are the rules regarding getting hit in the area of the band when playing contact sports? Everyones help is appreciated! Bastian- A changed Man

All thru highschool I wore the plain Reebock womens Princess classics. Best sneakers ever made I would have told you. Now they including 4 other pairs I have bought are not comfortable. They feel good for 5 min or so in the store.. some even better then just good. Then after an hour or so my feet start cramping up and feel smooshed like they have never been in sneakers before. I have tried different brands.. instead of an 8.5 I usually take I opted for a 8 Wide, tried $100 sneakers, and cheapo's from walmart. I can't seem to find anything comfortable enough to wear for more then a few hours. I'm starting to wonder if it's not the sneaker and considering I could …

It is really awesome I finally finished my first 5 k race. I walked it but I have never walked 3 miles ever.. It was such an accomplishment for myself. It made me feel so proud to do something for my community as well as earn my son's respect for doing this with them. I will tell you that it was probably the hardest thing I have ever done , but we finished in the top 25% of the racers. So I had to probably walk around 4 miles an hour to keep them from passing me.. I think next year I am going to run the race. At least right now that is the plans..

I recently was able to join a senior wellness center and they have a great lap pool. I hadn't swam in years and was surprised about the effort it took. I especially had problems breathing doing the standard crawl and was swallowing a lot of Water - not cool with the VSG. I was lucky to get in 12 laps at most. I also had really crappy goggles so I decided to go to a sports store to pick up a decent pair. There it was, the answer to my dilemma - a snorkel! I picked up a really nice pair of goggles, a snorkel, a pair of small kick fins and some hand fins. I couldn't believe the difference! I was able to swim for a full hour without stopping. I could breast strok…

Hey Everyone! I have a question... I had my second fill a couple of weeks ago, and have just gone back to normal foods a few days ago. I workout 3-4 days a week (1 hour cardio and 1 hour weight training)... Since this second fill I cannot eat after working out. I finished working out last night and waited about an hour and a half to eat. I was only able to eat a single chicken tender and my band felt soo tight that I didn't think that the food was gonna go down( I ate slowly, small bites, chewed, had plenty of moisture, not a lot of breading). Same thing happended on Saturday when I attempted tuna salad about an hour after working out. Am I the only one whose band s…

Hi guys!! I'm a month out and my biggest goal is to be able to finish a half marathon. I found out there is one in September, running through Disneyland!!! I am a Disney finatic. This would be a once in a lifetime kind of thing. I don't have the high expectations of running the whole thing, I just want to be able to finish it. Is there enough time to train for it? I'm down to 189 and I used to run( briefly, once upon a time). Can I SAFELY train and be ready for it??

Hi Guys - just wondered if its possible to work out abs post op say 6 months after surgery. Reason Im asking is that back in the day (I know. lol) I used to train doing Crunches, leg raises, seated machine crunches etc etc and was wondering wether intense Abdominal workout would play havoc either on the band itself or the port. Id also like to know of peoples experiences who have managed to get a 6 pack or the slightest visible abdominal muscles showing throuh and what that meant to you. Thanks Guys and Gals. Thanks Nigel.

Hi All, I hope everyone is doing well. I tell you I had a rough start...I was banded 3 weeks ago tomorrow and had a hard time dealing with the decision I made. However, I got through that first tough week and I am going STRONG!!! I worked out Saturday, took a spin class and no pain at all!! Monday another spin class, Tuesday climbed A Mountain (thats a mountain close to NMSU, called A Mountain after the NMSU Aggies). It takes about 30 minutes to climb up. Its so great, I tried a different trail up and loved the challenge. It was actually easier to climb than before I got the band and I have only lost about 15 pounds!!!! I'll be running it in several months!!! Toda…
