I had been dealing with a bad stricture and just got my opening dilation today 3 months post op. I hope I’m on the road to recovery cause I still don’t feel great. One of my major issues is that my tongue feels disgusting. Like the taste buds feel like they’re dead or numb. They still taste go back immediately to a nasty nothing bland taste. Has anyone experienced stuff like this or have recommendations to fix it? I’ve tried brushing the heck out of my tongue and also using a tongue scraper.

  2. Hi everyone! I have not had the gastric bypass yet. I am still in my first 6 months of learning to eat healthy/dieting. I do have a question. What do you when you get sick? I have always been told drink ginger ale or coke with cracker, or my other got to is bread. It just seems to settle my stomach when I am sick and especially have to take meds. This town I didn’t want a shake, anything felt like it was make it worse, but the ginger ale/coke abs crackers made me feel better. Or just eating plain bread. I just know after the gastric bypass I don’t think those would be an option or most likely not the best option. I just don’t know what else I would do. Th…

  6. HW - 237 LW - 137 (this was also my goal weight) CW - 155 I hit my goal weight 8 months after surgery (November 2019) but, by about 13 months out I was up to 150 pounds, and have been maintaining my weight in the 150’s ever since. I have maintained my weight here for two years and am comfortable, but still long to lose the 20 pounds I regained, and STILL fear gaining back all of the weight.

Hi Friends, I'm 8 months post RNY. SW 308 lbs, CW 213 lbs. Height 159 cm. I was on a steady losing path until Jan this year due to my walking (10k) daily. However, we had a bad family fight in Jan which has led to me being depressed and lethargic. I've kinda stalled since then and there has been zero progress. I'm scared I'm throwing all this away and fearful since I'm overeating and not losing. Any advice on how to kickstart my weight loss again please. My goal weight is 150 lbs and I really want to do this for my kids. Please help me

  8. Hi everyone, I'm 7 months out of RNY (Aug 23, 2021) and my weight loss has been great (down 82lbs). I have been struggling my entire life with anxiety and as I get healthier I have been more motivated to deal with my mental health issues as well. I had a conversation with my primary care dr. this morning and she is prescribing 25mg of Zoloft and talk therapy. My question is - have you been on or started Zoloft after RNY? My main concern is weight gain. I am soooo nervous about taking this medication and losing the results I have worked so hard for the last year. I'm also concerned about it slowing my weight loss. I am 100% going forward with the talk therapy and hon…

I’m a little over 3 years post op and due to bad choices have gained 18 pounds from my lowest weight. I need ideas of a typical day of eating from others who remain diligent to a low carb diet. How much protein and veggies are you in taking and do you count calories. TIA!

I had my surgery yesterday November 23rd and it went well. I also had hernia repair at the same time. So far I am not in much pain just a little discomfort. The nurses were surprised at how well I was doing. I drank two bottles of water. Took me several hours but I got and keep it down. No Nausea and i have I walked every our sometimes twice an hour to help with the gas. For now the gas discomfort is completely tolerable. The worst pain was my throat from the intubation, but still tolerable. I just made my first Bariatric fusion shake today and so far so good. Just slipping on water in between. I know I will probably have some bad days, but I’m happy the start has been re…

Ugh. Today marks two weeks since my RNY. First week I lost 10 lbs. This past week I lost 1.5 lbs. I don’t understand how this is even mathematically possible when I’m eating no more than 600 cal/day on average (no issues getting fluids in, no constipation, eating mushy foods now and getting most of my protein in). The logical side of my brain knows this is a process, but the emotional part that misses McDonald’s fries is feeling like this tastes a lot like Weight Watchers ?

  13. Started by gabbykittyvsg,

Yesterday I started having some pain but didn't think much of it. 2 am hit and I knew something was wrong. I tried everything I could think of but nothing made it better, walking and changing positions made it worse. So I finally called the on call surgeon and he said to head to the ER. They did labs, EKG since my heart rate was high, and a CT scan with 2 types of contrast. Turns out the site where my small intestine is hooked up to my stomach is swollen shut. There's some other concerning thing that showed up on the scan also that will need to be addressed. So I'm back in the hospital, on the same wing I was in earlier. I have a lovely NG tube from my nose to stomach. T…

  14. I just need to vent because im so upset about this sometimes. Does anyone deal with negative comments from family members about your surgery? It's not so much about the fact that I got surgery but moreso constant questioning of my success. Like they're always like "what's gonna stop you from just gaining it all back?" "You might just go back to your old habits." "How are things gonna be any different this time?" "You got to the point of needing weight loss surgery to lose weight so how can you be successful?" That's actually what my brother just said to me and it made me so sad and upset. I've been working so hard to do it right this time but they just discredit me like i…

I lost my mom less than a year afterwards and the depression set in. I'm gonna try and get help for where my brain is at. I've gained just about all my weight back. And I know I can get it off but it will take time. Any advice on where to start as far as the gym. Hugs

Hey! I'm gearing up for my soft food stage next week and thinking about protein sources. I get most of my protein through shakes right now in pureed stage but I also eat eggs and beans. I've been a vegetarian for 7 years now and don't plan on eating meat again. Has anyone tried these foods on soft? -Steamed tofu (not crispy or hard) -vegetarian deli meat slices -vegetarian ground beef, finely chopped up And can you think of anything else that might be okay on soft food?

  22. Is this stupid to focus on? I'm really working on not obsessing over my weight and calories and just trying to listen to myself but obviously it's good to have some idea. I'm 22 days post op and in pureed foods right now. I can eat about 650 calories a day with no feelings of fullness/restrictions. I can't remember what number my dietician gave me, I feel like it was 700 but I'm waiting for her to reply to my message. I'm feeling guilty for eating over 600 calories for some stupid reason. I know everyone's journey is different. Anyone else experience this anxiety? How many calories should I be eating in pureed food and protein drinks?

I am 4 1/2 weeks out from a sleeve to RNY conversion due to hiatal hernia and GERD. During the 7 years I was sleeved I never encountered any issues of foods I couldn't eat except for carbonation. Last evening I had around 2.5 ounces of beef brisket, which is listed by my NUT as being something that is allowed at this stage of recovery. Within an hour I was feeling miserable, with fullness, high chest pain, and major discomfort. I originally just thought i ate a bite or two too much, but soon began to have my first experience with frothing (or foamies as it's called on here). It was not a pleasant experience. I am hopeful this was just because the brisket wa…

Hey! I am currently still getting use to eating food and a lot of things are new for me. I'll be cleared for all foods on March 28th. I was curious did anyone eat low carb wraps or tortillas 2 months out and how did they make you feel? My family bought me these loven fresh Low carb protein wraps today. While I appreciate the gesture, I won't eat them until later this month and im a bit spooked to try "bread" again. Wondering if they'll sit okay in my stomach? And in general how do you do with Low carb wraps?

  29. Started by GinSunflowers,

So my bariatric doctor is trying to convince me to get the sleeve instead of the Bypass, which I thought would be better for me being that I have GERD & a hiatal hernia. He says he can fix my hiatal hernia and after he fixes it, I would be fine and won’t develop another hernia. Now I’m confused and not sure which surgery would be the best for me. Has anyone who’s had the sleeve ever developed a second hiatal hernia after it was originally fixed during a sleeve surgery?.

  33. Started by gabbykittyvsg,

Friday afternoon I got the phone call that my surgery was approved by insurance and was given a March 1st surgery date. The wait is longer than I expected but it makes sense since my surgeon needs more time to complete the bypass (revising from sleeve due to GERD) and a hiatal hernia repair. Financially it works out better for me too. It gives me time to pay some extra on bills since I'll be out for 2+ weeks. Between now and surgery day Inhave lots of appointments for labs, dietitian, pre-op physical with my PCP, and a huge appointment with my bariatric nurse and then a 1 hour appointment with my surgeon and another endoscopy. I get to do my surgeon's 10 day pre-op diet …

Good Morning everyone/anyone-that-reads-this, 1st time poster here. I had surgery on Feb 10th so i'm in week 5. I have been following the guidelines. Week 3 I tried baked chicken thigh. Super small bites (size of a pencil eraser). It seemed to be going down ok but then I felt sick and had to throw up. My stomach has not really tolerated solids since. I had my 1 month last week and the surgeon said to reset. liquids for 2 days, puree for 2 days, then soft for 2 days. I tried a greek yogurt this morning (that I had been able to tolerate) and after 1/3rd I felt sick, like the food wanted to come back up my throat. I'm only hitting about 400 calories …

Hey! I'm one month post op and cleared for soft foods. Yesterday I ate a one egg omelet for breakfast. Went down well and no sickness. Then for lunch my family was eating Chinese. I wanted to try some soft veggies so I ate prob about 4 oz of cooked zuchinnni and water chestnuts in a brown sauce. I again felt fine and didn't think of anything of it. Then fast forward 4 hours later I was trying to finish my protein shake before bed. I started having pain like right under my lungs, fast heart beat and nausea like crazy. I didn't puke but I didn't feel right. I went to bed and woke up normal again. Do you think that was related to dumping or something else?

Hi All, I am about 8 years out from a sleeve. Overall, happy. But often in the middle of the night I wake up, literally chocking on acid from GERD that developed immediately after the sleeve surgery. I am looking to talk to people who have had a sleeve and then converted to bypass. Would you please share with me: 1) Your reasons for conversion from the sleeve to bypass. 2) What was the post op period like compared with sleeve? 3) What is the best and worst part of having the bypass? 4) Any dumping issues? Thanks so much!

I lost quite a bit of weight on the Dr. Bernstein diet (offered mainly in Canada) a year ago, but like so many extreme diets I quickly gained it all back after stopping. It's very expensive unfortunately. And unless you have a tiny stomach it seems like an impossible diet to do forever no matter how much money you have. The Dr. B diet is basically a very low carb diet with "special" B12 Vitamin shots you get 3 times per week. I thought now that I've gone through the program and have all the materials that I could duplicate the diet at home after my surgery. From what I've read the B vitamin shots they give could come in handy if I could afford to go again. But some …

Hi all. I had RNY on 3/1. The pain has gotten progressively better, but I’m still having pain mid-stomach at the largest incision (not the incision itself - internal pain) when I move, bend, or reach certain ways. I’m scared that I ripped something inside ? I haven’t had fever, nausea, vomiting or anything else, so hoping it’s just still “settling.” My post op appt got moved to this coming Wednesday. Anyone else have tales of post-op pain taking a while?

I'm having fun, having a good time, eating some food. Obviously a radical departure from pre-surgery where I ate top quality, beautiful food in serious quantity, copious beer and wine and loved it. But still. I'm fine. But I'm... dreaming of cigarettes. So embarrassing. Haven't smoked in years but I'm having these super realistic dreams about smoking.

Today is two weeks past surgery. Recovery has gone well with no complications. My surgery was a revision from sleeve to bypass for hernia and GERD issues. I've dropped 10+ lbs in the two weeks which seems right in line (I was only at 227 on date of surgery). Per my surgeon's plan today we could progress to soft solid proteins, so it was great to have an ounce or two of sliced deli meat for lunch. Only downside is that they do an internal stitch to hold things together and that pain is real. I'm told it'll go away 4-6 weeks following surgery but until then it's the only downside to an otherwise good recovery so far.

Last day or two I've had some issues keeping food down comfortably. I'm not talking about a t-bone, two crisps this morning and I felt like dying and had to induce vomiting. However I just had two tablespoons of hummus and it's sitting ok. I spoke to my surgeon and he said people heal at different rates and possibly solid food is too much for me at the moment or I have a stricture. But they specifically said to me: eat what you want just chew well. 6 weeks out. What do you think?
