Hello all I thought I’d put my first post up to encourage others as I’m definitely a snail not a hare with weight loss, but getting there all the same. I had lapband surely nearly 15 years ago. Lost nothing. Didn’t work for me at all. Felt like a failure. Saved up again and decided to have the lapband removed and a bypass. Wasn’t that hopeful due to my previous experience but was desperate. Weighed 310 pounds and BMI 45. Surgery was fine with no complications. However I only lost a couple of pounds each week for the first few weeks. On about 500-600 calories a day. As food increases to about 800 calories at week 6, the slow but steady weight loss continued …

Hi all! I’ve been reading a few posts here and there from folks who are many years out from surgery and now I am curious too: how much of a portion in one meal are other RNYers able to eat? I’m 9 years post-op. Some days vary. Usually, I notice more that my appetite is still lower. However, I’m able to eat, say, a small turkey wrap and a small side dish, and not feel much restriction. The last time I felt stuffed was unintentional: I ate too many raw baby carrots and was miserable for hours! So basically, have others noticed with meals that over time, the restricted feeling that was so common in the beginning, just isn’t there as much?

11 days post op, and I'm not sure if I am either doing something wrong, something is wrong with my body or both. Whether I'm resting, moving or sitting all I feel is a need to throw up (and I do puke a lot, needing a bowl around me 24/7). My body heats up rapidly along with a very rapid heart beat from minimum activity or even being just sedentary. I do take in the fact that I am obese (313 lbs right now) and physical activity has easily excited my body, but this level of just walking across the room feeling my heart pounding and needing to puke out my guts. Despite all this I try to (following guidelines on how to lightly consume and time between) injest my ne…

So, my blood pressure is plummeting! To the point of passing out. I had HBP before surgery and on meds. It has slowly been going down. My PCP had me cut my meds in half, still too low. Took me off all meds and now even lower. It was so low yesterday that I couldn't even get a reading on my home BP cuff, but my wife took hers and it was normal. (mainly to make sure the cuff was working) When I finally got a reading about 20 minutes later it was 83/54, then it goes back to normal around 115/75... I am waiting for my doctors office to open this morning to see what he says and likely go in. I haven't been seen since before surgery. I went for a walk yesterday and got about …

So, here I am, 3.5 years out from surgery, and I decided to treat myself to a small bowl of ice cream to celebrate a special occasion. (My regular followers will know that I never eat processed sugar.). Well, it took about ten seconds before I had to run to the bathroom and puke my guts out. That had never happened to me before, not even shortly after surgery. It was quite a surprise. I guess it's good that my body will continue to let me know that sugar is still a no-no. ?

Hi there, it has been wonderful to read all of the stories here. I'm a 39-year old mother of three from Finland and have had RYGB 17 days ago. Here surgeons actually operate more RYGB than SG (contrary to US), and although I was set on SG before when I decided on needing the surgery, the surgeon did convince me with RYGB suiting me better in the end (and she is the surgeon in Finland who gets referred with the most difficult cases and operates a lot both in University hospital as well a privately, so I just ended up trusting her expertise). I don't know anyone personally who has had the surgery so nobody to really have discussions with about the downs (ups is another mat…

So, my Doctor's office kinda surprised me when they scheduled my surgery date. They told me date of Oct 3 and then come back on the 4th for a follow up. I was surprised because everything I have read has had gastric bypass as a two night stay. Has anyone this? If so, how long were you there before you were sent home? What did you bring with you, other than comfy clothes?

I’m 4 days post op for Gastric Bypass. Everything was going fine until today. My guts are on fire and anytime I try to eat or drink anything I get an immediate stomach ache and feel like I have to use the bathroom. Which sometimes I do, but mostly I’m just in pain until it decides to stop. Is this normal? I’m scared to even put anything in my mouth, it hurts so bad!

Hey all! Any ladies take birth control after bypass? I took lo lesterin for a couple years and got off the pill last year because I promised myself I wasn't going to date again until after I got surgery and a new job lol I am thinking about getting back on it but I hear it's less effective after surgery because of absorption. Anyone know about this? Have you tried alternatives like implants or IUDs? Thanks! P.s. I tolerated lo lesterin really well.

Hey, I was wonder what is the portion size of food you all can eat after bypass? Whether it is 2 months post op or years post op. Do you stick to it even years post op? I dont want to fail with this. I have not had the surgery. I still need to make the appointment to meet up with the surgeon I had that did my past surgery. I was just curious, thanks

I thought I was dealing with reactive hypoglycemia and so did my surgeon's NP. However, my rockstar dietitian took a chunk of time with me to really tease things apart. She wasn't 100% convinced it was hypoglycemia and agreed with my purchase of a cheap glucose meter. Her guess was that it was dumping syndrome, but delayed because I was going to bed after eating the triggering food and waking up due to the symptoms. 2 nights ago I purposefully ate a triggering food without eating any protein. Sure enough I woke up drenched in sweat and feeling horrible.... blood sugar was 100 so not hypoglycemia. So yeah, dumping syndrome.... Then last night I wasn't thinking and a…

I am 4 days post op (Gastric Roux and Y). Eating Jello/Broth and added strained soup yesterday. I'm not getting any protein or enough fluids. I can't stand store bought protein shakes. I have recipes for amazing shakes after GB but do I count these as a meal or part of my fluid intake or both? Same question with popsicles (meal, fluid intake or both)? I read about people sipping on their protein shakes but I don't know which category they are using them for. Also are there any snacks allowed. Everything I have says just meals but then things like string cheese are listed as acceptable. Does String Cheese count as a meal and why is it listed as full liquid di…

Hi, I'm new here. I joined this forum with the expectation that my surgery was going to be about 10 months from now. I went to the surgeon today and I'm looking at two to three months from now. Which yay?!? I don't have to think about the what if's as long, but now I'm overly anxious about "holy crap, it's so soon I don't have time to prepare". I'm having the bypass which is what I went into the appointment expecting him to say I would need. I'm just nervous and jumping in head first reading all the posts. Thanks for sharing your stories, I didn't want to read them while being a creeper and not sharing mine.

I'm about 3 1/2 weeks post op and ever since my surgery I have never been hungry. You would think that is a good thing, but to me it is not. It is messing with me psychologically and physically as I'm always tired. I'm taking my vitamins and minerals, but I need more. Also, when I make myself eat something I can't even get a bite down without feeling nauseous. Drinking water is a struggle as well as I'm always thirsty and can never drink enough to quench my thirst without wanting to throw up first. I need help. Will the urge to want to eat ever come back?

Hello everyone :S I am a little more than 2 weeks post op and thankfully as far as healing I have been doing good. My first week was awful as I was barely getting any protein or water intake because it all felt super heavy on my stomach and I began to panic but even being two weeks out I’ve learned more about my body but it’s a working progress. This being said, even though I am getting more protein I am still lacking! Does anyone have any tips on how to get good amount of protein in? I push myself to do 30 gram shake and thankfully my stomach can take tuna but I don’t think I can do 2 shakes at this time and I don’t eat enough meals to get the rest of the protein i…

Hello everyone one of my favorite things to drink pre opt was body armor but of course I am not able to drink it currently do to the sugar being too high and don’t want to risk dumping syndrome. Is there anyone that’s months of weeks post op that can now do more than just 6 grams of sugar? Is that something that will stick with me lifelong? Or might I be able to have a body armor every once and again in the future? Any help I would appreciate ?

It's kinda weird that my mother who has been at my Aunt's house in Knoxville Tennessee. (around 65 miles away from me) She arrived 2 days before Thanksgiving. I asked her if she wanted to come eat with us around 2 weeks before Thanksgiving. She tried everyway she could for me not to have RNY Bariatric surgery. Needless to say that's why she never showed up for Thanksgiving. She is still at my Aunt's house and sent me a text. I am informing you that I will no longer be communicating with you. I hate you and maybe I can come to terms that my son is already thinner than me. Your a bastard. Signed your no longer mother. Go f**k yourself.

I think I have an ulcer. I've had pain midway between my belly button and sternum (i think that's what it called) or breastbone. Whatever. Pain is worse when my pouch is empty and goes away for a bit after I eat and I have called the surgeon's office 3 times, its always she will call you back. Yeaaaa At this point they can kiss it where the sun don't shine. I left a message to my primary to see what she can do to help me out. I started taking Omeprazole (OTC) to help and low and behold no more pain or rumbling tummy. So symptoms are managed. Only thing I noticed is the weight loss has increased. I usually lose up to 3 lbs per week and it's about 1 lbs a d…

I've been on Pantoprazole for over a year now. I'd like to get off of it. I'll mention it to my surgeon next visit. I was wondering what all of you have experienced. Did you have to take a PPI? How long did your surgeon keep you on PPI after RNY? What type of PPI are you on? Are any of you on famotidine or another antiacid instead? Have any of you switched from a PPI to H2 or OTC chews or ? Thanks so much!

So I know people can have reflux problems after a sleeve, but I apparently am one of the rare cases of having severe issues after bypass. I currently have 2 large ulcers. They are talking revision surgery. Has anyone had this issue? I am only 5.5 months post bypass.

Hi All, Does anyone here have GERD and/or LPR (Silent Reflux) after gastric bypass surgery? If so, can you please advise: 1. How long ago you had the gastric bypass surgery (and if you had revision from sleeve to bypass)? 2. When your symptoms of GERD and/or LPR started? 3. If you have managed to treat it? I have LPR and am struggling. So other people's experiences would be appreciated. Thanks all.

Hello, I got RNY about two months ago. Overall things have been going well. However, for the past three days I have had a really strange sensation that won’t go away. It feels like something is stuck at the base of my throat. I have tried Gas X to relieve the sensation but it is not working. It almost feels like it’s difficult to swallow. Has this happened to anyone else?

Hey there! I am about 6 months post op now and have been struggling lately with a sensation of not being able to take a full breath and feeling like I need to dry heave - mostly after I eat no matter what it is and sometimes at random with no food. For example, I just had about four bites of salad and feel shortness of breath and like my throat/esophagus feels "tingly" and makes me feel like I want to gag but not throw up. There's no nausea either - it's simply the sensation that makes me want to gag, almost like needing to sneeze. The need to gag is particularly strong in the morning before I've had any liquids or food too. At first I thought it was al…

Did anyone had an experience where did completed there six months of dietitian and nutritionist requirement for the insurance through a nutrition that was outside of United States of America? I followed a diet program through a nutritionist for about eight months but she was located in Pakistan and we did virtual visits every month. I spoke with my insurance company and they told me that I need to submit A claim to the insurance on behalf of the dietitian but I wanted to know if somebody else had that experience and how did everything turned out.

Yesterday marked 5 months post op for me! Down 93 lbs in those 5 months and 130 since I started my WLS process. My favorite NSV is buying shirts anywhere; concerts, festivals, souvenir shops. ETC. Shirts, more my personality rather than the plain ones I bought because they fit. I don't measure myself too much. I did the night before surgery and have 1 other time I think 2 months ago. I carry most of my weight in my stomach so the only number that really changed was my waist measurement. I will again, but it is not a big deal to me because I can see a drastic change (most days) some days I do still the extra chunky me but most days I easily see the new and i…

Hey! I was a tried and true user of ibuprofen before I got my surgery but now that I'm bypassed, it's a no go. I take tylenol as recommended by my doctor for my period cramps and injuries now. I went camping this weekend and hurt my tailbone hiking (took a slip and fell on my booty). Now I have a pretty sore tailbone, it hurts to transition from sitting to standing and hurts to bend down and back up. I have broken my tail bone before so I know it's not broken, just a bad sprain or bruise but man it HURTS! Tylenol is not doing anything for me and I really don't want to take oxy leftover from my surgery because it's a terrible drug, it makes me constipated and makes m…

I finally got my date! August 18th! It took three months to jump through all the hoops, but finally I got the call with the date I changed from the sleeve to the bypass due to a few minor complications with acid. I feel strong about my decision and I'm super excited to move forward.

My surgery was June 29th. My pain has been really good. My energy level is really low. I've lost 19 pounds already. I am trying to keep up on water intake, etc. I'm still staying with relatively smooth, liquid/purreed foods. I am having a couple of issues though.. 1. Right where my adam's apple would be, if I had one, it constantly feels like there is a little pill there that is stuck. It's not so bad until I swallow anything...even saliva. Then it feels from that spot down into the middle of my chest like something doesn't want to go down, but I know there is nothing there. I went back to the clinic that did my surgery and they had me swallow that barium stuf…

Hi everyone. I hope I’m posting this in the correct place. I just wanted to get some insight or any prior experience. I had RNY on 9/9/13. Down from 311 pounds to between 170-180 now for maintenance. Prior to surgery, I was on Metformin, Protonix, and HCTZ. I was off all three meds within three months of surgery. Surgically, I had to have my appendix out and gallbladder removed many years ago, so neither are causing my current issues. About a month ago, I started getting wicked heartburn and reflux. My appetite is diminished. No vomiting, but zero desire to eat. I have cut out spicy foods, I’m not a smoker or tobacco user, and I do not drink alcohol. I…

I’m coming to really really really realise that my whole life used to revolve around food and now I am in limbo. Just 6 weeks post op. The other day I went to a flower festival - all I could do was watch people eating and want to eat all the yummy BBQ, burgers, crepes, etc etc. I realised that I have never been to a festival or park event without going primarily for the food on offer. Then I’m getting to realise that I never really go anywhere that doesn’t have a food element. I get slushies and chocolate and crisps etc if I go and fill the car up or stop at the station on the way from A to B just for food and no petrol. Meeting friends - all about eating. Maybe not…

I drank this weekend for the first time since surgery. I never really drank much before surgery, but maybe a few times a year. I am about 4.5 post-op and it didn't kill me. Or make me sick. I even stayed in my calorie range. I didn't plan on drinking but it was my birthday and I was thrown a surprise Birthday party so I decided to try it out. Worse case, sick at my own party. I was bought a shot of fireball. (My favorite but ALL sugar) I drank and 1/3 of it rather than the entire shot and then waited to see what would happen. Nothing, so I drank another 1/3 waited a few and then the last of the shot. Then.... was I buzzed? I don't even know, I felt buzzed b…

I had RNY surgery 5 days ago. I still have numbness in areas of my stomach, I am feeling faint and nauseous even though I am drinking all the required clear liquids daily. I am struggling to get my 60g of protein. The worst thing though is that I feel like I am STARVING! I get so faint that I lay in bed and it doesn't help at all. I do walk for 5 or so minutes every hour (not counting bathroom visits) All I can think about is food. Is this normal? I want warm solid food instead of cold liquids and jello. I am on phase 2 but the struggle is real. Will my mindset change or will this be how I feel forever?

I got so busy baking a pound cake for my son to take tomorrow and doing laundry that I forgot to snack. Here rolls around dinner time. I had broccoli and chicken. I ate too fast due to hunger. I got about 4 bites in and my stomach felt like it had lead in it. I then sneezed five or six times in a row and knew I ate way too fast. All I can say is oww, oww, oww. They told me to eat slowly and I have been following that rule but not today and I paid for it. It hurt. So here I am an hour later sipping on a protein shake because I didn't finish eating. Gonna make sure I follow that rule particularly. Lesson learned. When they say eat slowly they are not messing around.
