So, a few years back I had a fleeting thought about getting the band. But it passed quickly. So did not research it the way I have the sleeve. However, I have a friend that is thinking about the band. I told her I wasn't quite sure about it and that I had read some negative things about it. I was wondering if you could give me the fast and dirty info re: lapband the pros and cons. My friend is still trying to decide if this something she wants to do.

I've decided that just about everything sugar-free makes me nauseous. I hate all things SF/FF anyway. Low-fat? Sure. Depending on the food. I'm steering clear of "no sugar added" and all that jazz as well. Not good for the body, especially the gastrointestinal tract. Face it, any fake sugar in large quantities is going to wreak havoc just as real sugar does in large quantities. I hate the whole chemical aspect when I'm trying to be as organic as possible. Stevia is bitter, and has an awful after taste. I think I'm just going to limit my real sugar intake! Sorbitol, sucralose, I'm done with you!! Do these things bother anyone else? I just can't do it anymore, and…

Well after having a successful day doing all my Pre op appointments. I was dreading the feeling that I might have to cancel due to Not feeling great. I woke up yesterday morning after having a night out at my house mate. We went to a fav. Restraint for a Last minute midnight meal. (Their Cake is to die for.... ) anyway I woke up the next morning and decided. Im never up this early. Hence I hadnt started my new meds. That must be taken in the morning. I decided lets give them ago. Bad Choice!!! I spent the better half of my day seeing doctors and dreading the fact that if the acid in my stomach didnt go away I would have to call off my op on monday. (I dont normally have a…

I am almost 10 months out (2/9/2012) and have lost 78 pounds. Which makes me happy and I feel great- better than I have in longer than I can remember. But, I have been stuck at that weight for about 5 weeks. I know that I am snacking more, and while I haven't gained anything- even over Thanksgiving, I haven't lost anything. I have absolutely GOT to get back on track. I had stopped coming to this site for a while, but I am going to start making regular visits again. So, please, if you read this post, reply and yell at me to get my act together again before all this hard work goes to waste (or waist). Thanks!!

Hi Everyone, I'm Dana from New Orleans. My surgery date is December 21st. I've been on VST since July when I first started in researching VS. I've been in the November blog all this time because that is when I originally thought I'd get through the process...but my surgeon was booked ( he's the best in this area)...So now I'm a December Sleever I had my final appointment today -- signed consents, paid the $$$.....met with the surgeon..it was just what I needed because he totally put me at ease about the whole thing. Now I can't wait for the 21st. I hope to get know all you guys who will be going through this journey around the same time as me..... Are ther…

I am scheduled to have surgery in January so I have been all over YouTube and this site trying to learn as much as possible about vsg. Anyway, I subscribe to dr.alvarez's channel, endobariatric. There is a new video of a lady who had the surgery in April 2008. As I'm sure most of you know, there isn't too much out there on people that far out from surgery. I thought I'd let everyone here know about it.

I had my VSG surgery 9/24/2012- I lost 16 pounds initially- I have only lost 1 or 2 pounds since! I don't understand how people are saying we are supposed to eat 600-800 calories a day- when this amount of calories literally would starve a person- and can hardly sustain bodily needs! I don't get it! Wouldn't this restriction also cause the body to literally hold on to fat? I mean this would send the message to anyone's body to slow down the metabolism because it is in starvation mode! I don't want to be so negative, but having only lost 1 pound after this surgery is really making me think it was a waste of money and heartache! Also- I can't stand the protein shakes from …

Greetings! I have my surgery scheduled for 2/14/13. It's me, my wife, a 2 yo, and a 6 yo. My closest family is almost 12 hours out and my hospital is 90 minutes away. My plan was to get a hotel room the night before surgery with whole family. Report to surgery the next day and keep them in the area. They would either visit me in the hospital, hang out around the town, or be in the hotel until I'm cleared to go home. Does this sound reasonable? I know most patients spend one night in the hospital, but what's the typical policy towards kids in recovery? Should I put my sister on plane to help out? I'm afraid my wife is going to be overwelmed with the kids, but she wan…

I had the vs in July 2012. I weighed 268 when I started the whole process in the beginning. When I had surgery I was weighing 245 pounds. I now weigh 215 pounds and I am starting to gain because I am eating all the wrong things and I know I am doing it and I don't stop. I have always been a compulsive overeater who used food to deal with life. I am really struggling with the loss of food and who I am and where I am going. I need someone to make me accountable. I need a mentor who can understand where I am at and help me to move to a new place. I want to be healthy. I don't want to continue as I am but I am self sabotaging myself. Has anyone else struggled with t…

For those that don't know I am due to have my sleeve done on monday. I Have been struggling with Pre-op Opticrap and have been feeling pretty crap because my weight loss had stalled. Today I jumped on the scales thinking ill still be ERR and I wont have shown a significant weight lose... But offically I have broke the ERR reading on the scales I can now offically say I weight 150.7kgs on my home scales... I havent been able to weigh myself for a long time at home. So I was excited to see a number this morning. So im guessing at my preop appointment tomorrow my doctor will be happy and on monday I will have my sleeve done.

I have not been below a size 14 in my adult life. Even when I was playing competitive tennis in High School/ College (before tearing my rotor cuff), I had to work at keeping the weight off. So, my irrational fear of the day? What if I don't actually like how I look if I get below a size 14???

HI GUYS. GOT MY DATE AND STARTED MY 6 WEEK liquid DIET. IT'S PRETTY ROUGH. I AM SCARED, NERVOUS, YET A LITTLE EXCITED. TRYING TO STAY POSITIVE FOR A HOPEFUL OUTCOME. OBVIOUSLY, MY BIGGEST FEAR IS DEATH I UNDERSTAND THE WHOLE LIVER SHRINKAGE PART ETC. I HAVE ALREADY LOST 12LBS. I HOPE AND PRAY THAT I LOSE AT LEAST A TOTAL OF 25LBS BEFORE SURGERY. THAT IS MY GOAL. I STARTED AT 372 AND NOW I AM 360. I JUST WANT THE SURGEON TO HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM ETC. I HAVE A BRAND NEW BABY GIRL AND A WIFE AND FAMILY AND I JUST WANT TO BE THERE FOR THEM FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. SO I HAVE ABOUT 5 WEEKS LEFT. ANY TIPS OR ADVICE? IT'S GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS AND HAP…

I wonder if anyone else has had overwhelming feelings of emotions as they progress with their weightloss. I am 3 pounds away from being under 200 pounds. I know that this will be monumentous for me but I find that my emotions are so out of control the last week or so. I am happy, sad, teary, joyful. I know it is not hormones; do you think it has to do with the change I am going through with weight loss? My guess is yes just wondered if anyone else has gone/went through the same.

I am just under the 6 month mark. Down just under 100lbs from my first weigh in at the doctor in Jan this year. I am a slower loser, but still a loser so I will take it! I have been having issues where I just don't see the weight loss and get overwhelmed with how far I still have to go and so many of my support system are just a few lbs from goal. Until yesterday, I had a light bulb come on for me when I found a full body shot picture from early in 2011 of myself. I could have died, I do not remember me looking like that, I know what I felt like, but I never saw myself like that. I needed the reminder of just how far I have come, but it was also heartbreaking to finally s…

Hi Guys, I was wondering if any of you had this problem - I am a month out now, and have lost 19 pounds but I feel like I need to eat constantly. I am trying to mostly eat healthy choices, like Tuna, chicken, vegetables etc etc, but I do have the odd chocolate maybe three times a week. Is this a huge problem? I feel like my entire focus is on food, and that I am constantly hungry. Anyone with some good advice for me? Thanks!

I have been stalking this site for some time but this is the first that I have ever posted. I am set for my sleeve surgery at Vanderbilt on 12/18/2012 and honestly, I wish it was tomorrow I am not apprehensive about it at all and want it to be here. I am so amazed at how smooth the whole thing has gone at Vanderbilt (Vanderbilt Center for Surgical Weight Loss) and even faster over 7 months of messing with this, I am still stoked! I am so much looking forward to feeling better, looking better, not sleeping with that blasted cpap thing on my nose..being able to keep my pants up, walking better, which is hard enough after a partial foot amputation and huge Frankenstein or…

As an avid reader in the bodybuilding community I ran across something that will interest most of yall. Here we go "its long" Here is a good read from lyle.... How Many Carbohydrates Do You Need? A perennial question, argument and debate in the field of nutrition has to do with how many carbohydrates people should be eating. While the nutritional mainstream is still more or less advocating a large amount of daily carbohydrate (with fat being blamed for the health problems of the modern world), groups often considered at the ‘fringe’ of nutrition are adamant that carbohydrates are the source of all evil when it comes to health, obesity, etc. They advocate lowering car…

Yesterday, I had both my appointment with PCP for final medical clearance and Nut#3. I was told that after both reports were recorded, they would be submitting to insurance. So, I started thinking: if insurance comes back in a week (which I understand is typical), it's possible - just possible - I could have this thing done here in December. On one hand, I'd like to enjoy Christmas and New Years without restriction, but on the other hand, I'm ready - let's get this thing going! Then as I was waiting in the lobby of my bariatric surgeon for my Nut appointment, I could overhear the nurses talking about how they've spent all day trying to squeeze in PPO patients that…

Hi, Tomorrow I will be 5 weeks out, and over the past few days I have been going from feeling ravenous - like will eat my hand hungry, and can't think of anything else! to ofcourse feeling extremely full after like two teaspoons of food. I'm finding this all so new. Just last week I was holding off eating because of the pain I got in my back and my chest from certain foods - but now I feel I can eat more foods, but its this starving feeling that I don't like.. At this stage - 5 weeks out, how often should I be looking to eat and how much at a time? Any help appreciated.

In doing pre-op research, I read about everyone's "goal weight" and am wondering how it's determined? Is it simply the likely end weight based on VSG statistical weight loss averages? Is it your own goal weight? Does the doctor help to determine? The bottom line is that I would like a goal weight that is really achievable. THANKS!

I am worried as i have been losing weight lately after my recent diagnosis of diabetes. My dr. has put me on metformin and this past month i have lost 10 lbs. I am not complaining but i'm worried i will lose too much and my BMI won't be high enough to qualify for surgery! If i knew i could lose all the weight myself i wouldn't be worried. Anyone lose a lot of weight on metformin??

I was looking up long term results on the computer. As with any of the these surgeries it is possible to gain the weight back. I am struggling with this currently. I hit my goal and gained some of it back. I am going to make my threshold 165 pounds. Once I hit 165 it is 2 days of intense working out and liquids to get back down. THIS IS SERIOUS. There aren't alot of long timers on here. My June 2011 category is practically non-existent. Surprisingly I feel I will need more support long term then I did in the short term. I am pasting something I just read on another page. Take what you want from it. Subject: The Sleeve long term - "Not making goal" a…

In the last couple of months I have come off maintenance with the intention to lose some more, only to really, really gain. It took awhile but it got there. I am not sure how much but it is at least 15 lbs. I have in the past tried to share my sucess in the hope it would help, and have hesitated to share this. Embarassed I guess. I have realized I can eat alot more now, and being absent minded about everything other than work, it was easy to do. Plus I am a depressed eater and my Mother passed away in January - it has really hit home as the holidays approached (Saturday was her birthday). So now my goal is to get back on track. I know I have "stretched" my stomach…

Hello. I am pre-op and will be a self-pay patient at a Center of Excellence in the U.S. Both of my medical insurance plans (Tricare and the VA) do not cover medical care if I have complications. I am very concerned about this. If I am one of unfortunate souls who ends up with a leak, I will have to foot the bill for the hospital stay. This would put me into bankruptcy I would think. I have tried Blis insurance, but my surgeon (and my second and third choices) are not on the list. I have also tried seven corners and peterson insurance, but they are only for out of country (like MX). Does anyone have any suggestions about where to find coverage for complications …

Hello ALL!!! I'm back. I rescheduled my surgery for this Wednesday, Dec 5th. I am more mentally ready for this. I had some serious jitters, but I said to myself, "Girl you gotta just do this for you" Truth is, I'm not going to be happy if I don't. I'm kidding myself if I think I can lose the amount of weight I want to lose on my own. If that was the case I wouldn't have been overweight for more than 10+ years. So I'm going to put my girl panties on and rock this surgery, and ROCK OUT afterwards!! I'll keep everyone posted, and thanks again for all the support I've gotten so far!!

Hey everyone... Long story short, I was denied in Ontario. Since I was denied, I have been off my healthy eating wagon and it's been a disaster... I scheduled my surgery and I have been worse since then. I really wasn't planning on doing the food funeral but it has kind of happened even though I didn't want it to. Problem is my surgery is scheduled for March 4th in Puerto Vallarta, and I'm in the process of TRYING to move it to Jan 21st so that I'm not filling my face until March.... which at this point I can't even imagine waiting that long. Has anyone else has a large gap between finding out their date to when their surgery is? I believe I have gained 3-5 pound…

I was having 2nd and 3rd thoughts again today. Then I took my daughter to the doctor and sat in the tightest stupid skinny person chair. I decided I would not have to be miserable in armed chairs after the surgery. Then I asked if I could step on their scale before I left. I had lost 4 pounsince the last time I was there. That means that I have lost 24 pounds since Sept! Pre-op diet starts tomorrow and I am actually excited.
