Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums

Revision weight loss surgery after weight regain, complications, or a failed procedure. Revisions from LAP-BAND, sleeve, or bypass.

Morning everyone! Revised 5/27, feeling great, had post surgery visit yesterday - all is well, besides the hematoma - posted a topic the other day - but all is well .... surgeon isn't that concerned. Yesterday morning, I was woken up by this weird feeling in my chest, sat up fast and boom - acid vomit - light green bile looking. Didnt think anything of it till today --- same thing - this time I didn't vomit but the acid/bile or whatever it is - is horrendous. I thought, or I was hoping, that the revision would take care of this - and this is worse than before the surgery -- fluke? I'm on Prilosec, but normally that doesn't work for me, so the sur…

So I was revised 5/27. I’m feeling great...  went to bed and awoke with a horrendous bruise on the left side of my belly button ... incision site.  Didn’t have a bruise when I went to bed.  It’s hard large and painful. Feels like a baseball underneath.  All the others are greenish as it’s been over a week.  I called the emergency service for my surgeon and his associate called  me back.  Just said if no fever it’ll be okay. ER if I want but with COVID unsure I wanna go but I had surgery and everything was impeccably clean.  Maybe CITYMD. maybe it needs to be drained? ??‍⚕️

I am 7 days out now from a revision bypass. I am feeling pretty good. Out of shape it seems but I know it’s major surgery. I had a umbilical hernia repair on top of it. Caffeine withdrawal headache was a killer but it has pretty much subsided. My thing is, is my diet protocol the same as the sleeve. Can you recommend a site or a possibly printable friendly list. It seems I have to be more careful this time around. One the hernia heals I think I’ll be doing a lot better. My nutritionist wasn’t this helpful this time around and I go back to the surgeon on Monday and also the 25th. Thanks.

Just got the Revision from a 2013 LSG to DS 10 days ago. I'm recovering well and seeing excellent results. Everything went better than expected. Just graduated to Puree stage today after four weeks of a liquid diet. The diet was satisfying and I never went hungry. Now I'm adding some new foods to my diet for this 2 week stage. In these COVID-19 times, the hospital does not allow visitors so no family could visit during my 5 day stay. I had four other required procedures that week for a total of 3 surgeries over 4 days. I've seen a lot of great, relevant information on this forum. I look forward to getting through the journey with all of you.

Finally, got a new surgery date no thanks to Covid-19. Was suppose to go from sleeve to gastric bypass, along with fixing a hiatal hernia on 4/1, which I so need. I’m over pain & acid reflux. So fingers crossed 6/24, is it. ??Not how I wanted to spend summer, but it’s better then not at all, looking at the positive side of it. Who knows where I live summer could be cancelled to. ?

What does this actually mean? I know with the sleeve, snacks were “slider foods”.  With the revision I’ve read dumping a lot.  Is that bowel changes or vomitting?  I would think diarrhea as you dont have a stomach like you did prior to the sleeve and the sleeve.  I will have to research more.  I would have to be out to dinner when the time comes and then have to run to the bathroom or be on vacation etc lol

Hi everyone- I'm new to BariatricPal. I had RNY Gastric Bypass in June 2008. Met goal weight of 118 lbs. by August 2009. Had my son in September 2011 so I gained 30 lbs. which I subsequently lost within 6 months of his birth. I am now approaching my 12 year surgiversary and I have crept up to 180 lbs. I am so mortified and disappointed in myself; and I understand it is also due to the lack of fullness after so long. I am going back to my original surgeon to discuss revision options. My question is, I have NJ Family Care / Horizon BCBS of NJ and there isn't much online as to whether they typically cover weight loss surgery revisions. I am so nervous because my insuran…

So I was originally going to have an EGD w Bravo before the revision surgery but plans have since changed. I’m wondering how many or if anyone else had the EGD/hernia repair (possibly) done at the same time as the surgery. The reason my plans changed was because the hospital had a major screw up w my IV placement on the day I was supposed to get the EGD; the team had a very hard time finding my veins because they are so small. Yes, I drank water the day before but that did not help. They put the IV in thinking they found my vein but turns out they were wrong; I think the line moved or something because I could feel some of the anesthesia but not enough to knock me out in…

Revision done and I’m home in bed. Day 2 here we go. I have such a headache and liquid Tylenol is making me nauseated ? it’s so gross It’s the only thing they gave me to take besides nausea meds, and Prilosec. I do have oxys and may take that at night time, tonight. Unsure what to do about this headache. I might attempt Gatorade maybe it’s also caffeine withdrawal. help!!!!

I've really enjoyed reading everyone's posts. After 10 years of the 'Band', I've decided that I must move on! Started with highest weight pre-band at 236, lost 70 pounds and things were great. Somewhere along the way, I was too tight (constant vomiting) or too loose (ate everything). Could never get back to the green zone. I gained all the weight back plus 4 pounds! So, tomorrow I am officially separating from the band and entering a new relationship with the sleeve. Please, supporters, wish me the best and hopefully my nervous jitters will calm down.

I have the sleeve. I had great success with it. However, I was having significant acid reflux. I went to my surgeon (I let it slide for a long time) Now I am being told that my acid is so bad that I am around 6mo out from cancer..... Barrett's esophagus. I'm really afraid of the bypass. I never wanted it. But she said if I don't get it, I am on the road to cancer. I have three lesions in my esophagus and I am inflamed. The example of the color of my esophagus was.... Healthy, the pink part of a nail bed....Me....USC MAROON. Also, after my endoscopy, my surgeon put me in to operate. That was a week before I spoke to her in person. She said it was better to book surgery and…

Hi all, I was sleeved 8/9/17 and from the very start I had issues. The first night after surgery I didn't sleep and neither did the lady in the room with me because I coughed all night in a raised position. Little did I know that coughing was a sign of what was to come. GERD !!!! A few days after leaving the hospital I was awoken out of a dead sleep chocking on acid that burned my nose and throat. I was given 3 different PPI before I found one that gave me relief from that part of it. I have had burning for almost 3 years now and have erosive esophagitis Grade D. My revision date has been reset now for May 22 ( 3rd times a charm) I am not happy to be doin…

On a liquid diet for almost Two weeks now, for surgery on the 27th from March and April postponement.  I awoke today exhausted and just not feeling great. I felt a sore throat and nasally. Bit of a headache.  I feel extremely tired.  I hope it’s nothing that just a run down today from some yard work the past few days.  I hope it’s not the “virus” after all this.  Could it be just an off day? Sinuses?  Oh my... I hope that’s the case after all this waiting. Could it be due to not eating food like I was used too.

  18. Started by salasmarlene02@gmail.com,

Has anyone done the pouch test to see if it stretched and for how many oz you are eating

  19. I had the band in 2010, revision to sleeve in 2014 due to major band slip (couldn’t even drink water with empty band), and now having acid reflux and weight gain following a hysterectomy in 2016 and looking for options to revise again. Anyone else have a similar situation and any success with insurance approval?

What’s a good food/calorie tracker that you use or have tried? I’m going from sleeve to bypass in a month.

  21. Started by gerdzilla,

Hello All ? I was sleeved 10 years ago. I will admit I did not get to my goal weight and have regained. Now due to GERD my surgeon is recommending a revision to bypass. As far as weight loss my surgeon states I should expect to possibly lose 20-30 pounds. Has anyone had a revision to bypass after a long period of time(7+ years) and lost more than 30 pounds. I feel like I should lose more than that. I also have concerns of hair loss. I didn’t really experience hair loss with my sleeve. Has anyone found a way to combat this issue? Thanks so much !?

  22. Hello there! Got revisión to RNY from sleeve on november 28th 2019 due to GERD and hiatal hernia. Got gallbladder removal at the same time. Got emergency surgery on May 3rd 2020 (10 days ago) A day before I felt sick, sharp pain in my tummy that came and went from a 5 to solid 10. Started vomiting at 5pm for a nonstop 12 hours period Arrived dehydrated at hospital, got a CT scan and fortunately they were able to fix me on time, before Any complication presented, like removing intestine or staying in ICU Adhesions covered my intestine at the jejunojejunal anastomosis (the spot where they stitch/unite 2 pieces of intestine) and so producing an intestinal oc…

  23. So I have a bit of a complex issue. I had the Lapband put in 2009 and had great success. In 2015 I developed an antibiotic resistant port infection and had to have my band removed. I’m trying to get approved for the gastric sleeve but my insurance has denied saying I’m only allowed one surgery per lifetime. Has anyone ever successfully got them to approve it with peer to peer review. Trying to arm myself with as much info as possible.

Having a bypass, revision, on 5/27 - just spoke to my surgeon via teleconference... finally moving forward. I didn't have any hair loss with the original surgery - sleeve, back in 2015. I had thinning but was on Biotin. Is the revision, bypass, worse for thinning/losing hair?

  25. Started by rulooking4me,

Had VSG 4 years ago. SW 285. Got down to 215 within 4 months and never lost another pound. My weight would go down 3 lbs and up 2, then stall and restart. My surgeon acted like I was crazy when I talked to him about why I couldn’t lose consistently. Started regain 7 months post-op and now I’m back up to 250. My hunger never left, I was hungry day after surgery. I vomit still when I eat dense or dry foods and therefore sometimes avoid Proteins for carbs to avoid discomfort and vomiting. Acid reflux is awful too. I wish I had bypass instead as I’m nauseous and uncomfortable every day either hungry, heartburn or uncomfortable. Thoughts?

  26. Started by ge0rgette2,

Which Vitamins do you use for bypass (revision)!? I bought some on amazon 4m ago as I thought I was having the revision in March But COVID has other plans for me :-(  So I bought Bariatric Fusion - vitamins: chewable and Iron chewable soft chews. Omg. horrendous tasting.  What do you like?  I was thinking of doing Flinstones again like I did with my sleeve. Maybe some gummies.

  27. FINALLY!!! Cross your fingers for me! Had a revision date on 3/18 that was cancelled/postponed on 3/16, then moved to 4/29, which was cancelled/postponed on 3/29, received the phone call today that emergency surgeries, elective, my surgeon was informed he has 2 dates in May he can perform ... So I am scheduled for 5/27, hopefully the Governor won't change things in my state - New York. I have to start my 2 week LIQUID tomorrow, eeeeew and eeeeek! didn't expect this at all.. I'm being revised from Sleeve in 2015 to bypass now. I have been suffering horrendous heartburn and vomitting for a year now - was fine in the beginning, day by day, it's worse and wo…

Well after being denied and appealing the surgery and waiting 7 weeks for a surgery date which is 3/18, I believe they are canceling my revision due to the virus. Because it’s elective.  I hope I’m wrong. I am in so much pain from the heartburn. I’ve been on a liquid diet for 2 weeks.  I’m so upset.

  32. I had my sleeve done and a hiatal hernia repair in 2011 and reached goal in about 11 months. I lost 100 lbs and have kept it off ever since. Fast forward nine years and I have esophagitis, an esophageal stricture, another hernia, and crazy bad GERD. My surgeon has presented me with two options. Option one, keep my sleeve as it is, but partially cut through the muscles of the esophagus to ease the stricture and then fold some of the stomach inward (like rolling the top of a sock inside itself) to keep the acid in my stomach. Or Option two, convert to a RnY. I love, love, love my sleeve because afterwards I had no hunger. None. And it's still gone, I can go all day if I am…

Hello All! Hope all is well, So I had the VSG is TJ Mexico in 2016. I lost over 100 pounds. I have gained 70 back. So I went back to my original surgeon in TJ and he did a RYN bypass...or so I think I did. I had more restriction before I had the revision. I am at a loss. I wander if they did anything at all, I mean I am sore from the surgery and I feel like I had surgery but I feel hungry, don't really feel full. How am I suppose to loose this weight??? If I had to do it all on my own than what was the point of the surgery? Sorry y'all I am just venting and really worried. Can anyone share their input?

  34. Hello, I am new here, 2 years post op vsg to rny. Does anyone have experience with sharp pain in the pouch area when sneezing or trying to sit up or turn over in bed? It also happened yesterday when I was getting dressed, pulling up my pants. I have a CT scan tomorrow, just feeling afraid of what this might be. Thanks

I'm new to the forum. I had my sleeve done six years ago and I loved it...that is until 4 months ago when medication was no longer keeping my reflux in check. I've lost 150lbs and have maintained that loss. I had a hiatal hernia repaired last month and I still have gerd symptoms and I'm terrified of having a revision. Has anyone had a revision completed? If so which one? Did you have complications? Did you have hair loss again? Vitamin deficiencies? Any complications at all?

  37. Holy Hell..... found this old picture from before my Lapband in 2009. Found on my friend's FB page. It said post Feb 2010.... But i'm 99.9% sure it was pre op liquid diet..... That would have made me 232# back then..... that jacket was a 3XL...(maybe a 4). I was so sad back then. I really felt at the end of my rope. I'm so happy with the way things turned out. Looked back at some of my post and damn the things i said..... i was one of the "i only lost" posters... I was also still under the delusion that i could make my marriage work. Hi So my appeal was overturned. Yay! What can I expect for revision?  Post op diet the same.  Will I ever eat again. Lots of dumping syndrome?

  40. After being successful for 10 years with the lap band I will be having a revision surgery from band to RNY In early April. The need for revision is like so many others, slipped band and awful GERD that ultimately required deflating and has resulted in my gaining almost all of my pre band weight back. :( My weight struggle had/have a lot to do with the fact that I just simply do not ever feel full. I can eat crazy amounts of food because I just never get a message in my brain that I’m full. The band changed that IMMEDIATELY! I believe that’s why I had such great success, because I knew very quickly if I’d eaten to much or too big of a bite and full was a sensation I final…

I am 6 days post op and feeling better everyday. The surgery took longer than expected, and I spent 2 days recovering in the hospital. I have lost 10 lbs on the Stage 2 Full Liquids. Has anyone had any issues with keeping warm after surgery. I am normally warm blooded, but not so much since I got home. We live in the Pacific Northwest so the climate is relatively mild compared to the Midwest. I find myself turning up the thermostat and layering more clothes. I vaguely remember going through this when I had my Lap Band surgery in 2005. Also, my blood pressure is running higher than normal the past few days. It is not at crisis level, but is concerning long term. …

  43. So I’m about 3 months post op from my last surgery- D-Switch and have only lost 20lbs and even that was lost during pre-op diet. The STRUGGLE is real. Anyone else?

  44. Hi - I'm scheduled to have the RNY revision from Sleeve on March 13, 2020 in TJ Mexico. I'm curious to hear about what the weightloss after revision has been for those of you that have had it. I've tried searching but I'm not finding a ton on stats. I'm having the revision due to GERD and to continue losing weight. I have about 80 lbs to lose total after losing about 120 lbs with the sleeve. Here is my before (420 lbs) and after to date (306 lbs). Lowest weight was 279 which I'm trying to get back to by my surgery date.

I'm sure you all have heard that when you get a revision that you will have more difficulty losing weight than with the first procedure. I'm here to give you hope! I had an eleven year old lap band slip, so I had it removed and had a RNY done. Today is my three month post-op anniversary, and I am down 40 pounds. More importantly I am only one pound heavier than the lowest weight I ever achieved after my lap band! So trust the process, hang in there and hopefully you will also show the naysayers that it is possible to get good results even after a revision. Please add your stories here to help encourage the people who need a revision and think it'll be a waste..…

I am 23 days post op and on soft foods now per my doc. Ever since surgery, when I eat, my stomach never feels settled or “normal”. I wouldn’t say I’m nauseous, but it’s close to it. I can only eat very little. A few ounces at most so I’m not over eating. I’m waiting 30-1 hour before drinking fluids again. I thought eating soft foods might make my stomach feel “normal” again but it hasn’t. Is this just because my stomach is still healing you think? I force myself to eat because I know I need to, but my stomach feels the same before I eat and after I eat. It’s hard to explain. I can only say that it does not feel like a normal stomach feels if that makes sense? Most people…
