PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by HiImNikki,

Hi everyone! This month I had my first appointment with the bariatric center. I had an appointment with a nurse, psychologist and dietician. I got all those appointments done in one day. I have to wait 3 months for my insurance to pay for the surgery. Question is, what am I supposed to be doing right now? I see my surgeon for the first time at the end of this month and I was approved for surgery through the nurse and psychologist. I know I am supposed to start a food journal so I write down what I have been eating. Also, what should I be keeping track of right now? I know my dietician said I don't need to be detailed right now (counting protein, ect). Thank you for your t…

  2. I'm five days into my 2-week liquid diet, and I have most of the symptoms of "low-carb flu," plus a couple of extra ones. I find I'm very anxious and jittery during the day, and I have strange, vivid nightmares at night that are hard to wake up from. I drink almost no caffeine, so that isn't the cause of the anxiety. Any thoughts on whether my symptoms are related to my diet?

Hi everyone (: Firstly, I'll start by introducing myself a little bit... I'm a 22-yo girl from Belgium and in August 2016, I went for my first appointment to get more information about bariatric surgery. Now, what led me to making this appointment? Well, ever since I can remember I've been struggling with my weight. I started going to a dietician from the age of 10, had a personal trainer for a few months at the age of 12, between the age of 14 and 16 I did Weight Watchers, a Soup diet and also the Dukan-diet that I did for about 6 months. After graduating High School, I went to a life coach and did some kind of special diet, combined with exercising every day…

I am just beginning this weight loss journey. What I've done so far, completed the initial consult with my surgeon, started the second month with my nutritionist and pre-op diet (7 pound loss the first at weigh in), and completed psych evaluation. Not sure why but I'm feeling scared, discouraged and ambivalent about all that is happening. Wondering if I'm the only one that has/had these feelings

Hi all: This is my first post on these message boards. I am in my first month of my six-month long physician-monitored diet to receive approval from my insurer for gastric bypass surgery. I am hoping to complete the monitored diet by early August and then schedule my surgery for early October. One of my biggest concerns with this surgery is how my husband will also have to adjust to this change. I am the cook for all of our meals and we eat take-out a number of times a week. I had my psych evaluation this morning and they stressed how important it is to recognize that relationships will have to change once you have surgery. That, like an alcoholic, you can no longer …

  18. After reading so many posts about people getting approved for surgery, and hoping and praying my time would come, I can finally utter these words: I'VE BEEN APPROVED FOR SURGERY! My paperwork was submitted to my insurance company 1 1/2 weeks ago and I've been stalkin' them every day with phone calls. LOL! This afternoon I called again and was told I was approved. Now I just have to wait for them to submit it in writing to the surgeon's office. I'm hoping my surgery can be scheduled for April or May. I swear, I'm so excited and relieved, I can't contain myself! I feel so extremely blessed to be one step closer to my surgery date. Good luck to everyone on…

My last weigh in for the 6 month required medically monitored weight loss program i gained 5 pounds. The dietitian has me coming back for another 1 on 1 with her because she wants to make sure that i am at back down to my starting weight before i attend the preop class. She advised that even though insurance uses the starting weight for approval if they see thst i have gained prior to final approval. i could be denied. since that news I have been nervous about getting all the way to this point and not getting approved. 27. Yesterday afternoon, I broke down crying after thoroughly going over my body from head to toe in my bathroom mirror. I've had this body my entire adult life. I wasn't overweight as a kid but that was so long ago. I don't remember what my body looked and felt like in high school. I've already lost quite a bit of weight and have loose skin but I don't look drastically different, I don't think. At that moment, though, it hit me: my body is going to look completely different. I'm never going to see this body again. And my new body and skin scare me. I started crying. I didn't realize it, but I needed that cry. I know I'll probably cry again closer to surgery. Has anyone…

Hi all, I'm very new to the site, just joined this evening. So a big hello to everyone. I'm going to be having my gastric sleeve operation next month, here in the UK. I have done a lot of research on the main areas of the diet and the op, and have of course discussed this with my surgeon. I just wondered if anyone had any extra advice they wanted to throw in? Anything I won't have thought of/anticipated? Any advice on things to buy in preparation, or that I should take to the hospital with me would be particularly helpful. I've read some people saying to wear really loose clothing, and others suggesting some sort of control-wear to support the tummy area after…

  30. I am having gastric sleeve surgery on April 6th (yay!) and so far have only told a handful of people. I am a private person when it comes to losing weight because I hate the questions of "how is the dieting going?" "how much weight have you lost?" So this time around I really don't want to deal with it, plus I don't want to deal with the judgement involved. Also, I want to add that in the last four month I have lost 40 lbs on my own so people are already noticing that I am losing weight so I am figuring that they will just assume that I am continuing on with the weight loss after I have had the gastric sleeve surgery. I don't live near my family and only see them …

  33. Hello! My name is Julie. I am preparing for a possible total gastrectomy. I have had gastroparesis since 2003- that's when my symptoms started. It took until 2005 to get a diagnosis. Then it took till 2007 to get a gastric pacemaker placed. It helped for awhile. I had constant nausea and vomitting from 2003 until I got the pacemaker. After the pacemaker I was better for awhile. Then, the pacemaker began to rub the nerves in my stomach and had to be moved. Then it quit helping with the nause so the dr turned it up to a higher setting. All the while I am still overweight. Then the battery died so it had to be changed. That was in August of 2016. It is no longer helping w…

  38. I'm on day 4 of my two week preoperative diet. Surgeon has me on protein shakes and bariatric clear liquids. Twice a week I can have a healthy meal consisting of lean protein and non starchy veggies. I'm doing fine, have some struggling moments but overall it's not that bad. I guess knowing that I have to do this to hit my goal is what keeps me in check! My question is if I can have two meals per week why can't I just eat high protein low carb instead of shakes? I know liver shrinking is low carb but does anyone know why it has to be liquids? Just curious!

I KNOW 100% this is what I'm supposed to be doing. I know I'm going to be happy and healthy and confident and my life is going to improve so much.. I think I'm almost scared of that. I had my sleeve on March 7 and I asked the Lord to go before me and smooth things with all the people and things that I would have to be engaged in and he answered my prayers. The first couple of Hours were a little rough but after that hump it seem to be al little more tolerable. I came home Thursday morning and have been doing well. Just remember to keep hydrated, breath and walk and let your body do the rest [emoji1]
