I just had the traditional bypass on 10-30-12. I am a 41 year old African American male from the Philadelphia area. The first three days since the surgery have been filled with adjustments and discomfort but I am still excited about the whole process. I'm on my way home. I'm sipping away. I started this journey over a year ago. I can't believe I followed through! Are there any other 10-30-12 folks out there?

I am Kerri and I am 39 years old. I just want to tell you about my experience so far with gastric bypass. I started a year ago trying to line everything up. I had two pulmonary embolisms which made everything go much slower. I also have a rare vascular birth defect and we weren't sure how it would react to surgery. Needless to say, I had surgery December 18th, 2012. I found out the day before surgery they wanted to put a vena cava filter in me to help with the blood clots in my lungs. I was so scared and another surgery right before this one? I was so thrown off. My highest weight that I know of was 335. But getting on the preop diet for two weeks, I came down to …

Anyone else have the egd done for the hiatal hernia? My surgeons office said most people have it so I probably do. Is it true that most obese people have it?

Hi guys! I've been posting a few threads here and there but have a few questions. Is there a ridiculous amount of pain after surgery? Also, is or was hair loss an issue for everyone? I'm having surgery January 28th and getting married August 31 so I'm just wondering about this stuff! Thanks its really awesome reading everyone's posts and experiences... Also concerned with being nauseous or stuck feeling can I avoid this by following the rules?

Hi everyone, I am so glad I found this site. This has already given me valuable information. I am hoping to get the lap band surgery. My BMI is 40 and I have comorbities. All my life I've weighed 130 pounds and ran 51/2 miles a day for over 20 years. In 2009 I got a severe back injury at work. Also, I was fired about a year later because I couldn't work as hard. I've gained almost 100lbs. Worker's Comp has screwed me for three years. I have a lawyer and we will be going to court soon. I believe I will get a good size settlement. I deserve it. I just found out bc/bs of IL denied my surgery. I am not sure it was an out and out denial. They said I didn't have documentat…

Just wanted to say Hello to everyone. I hope I'm posting this the right way. I was banded on 12/21 and so far things are going great. I think the worst part for me was the pressure from the gas used during surgery. I'm a week into the liquid diet and I'm really surprised that I haven't been hungry. ALTHOUGH, I have been having really weird dreams about eating things I shouldn't lol I told my husband there more like nightmares because even in my dream I remember think WHY am I eating this its really gonna hurt when it goes down. Anyone else experience these types of weird dreams?

Okay, so here goes. I had Gastric Sleeve surgery on December 13, 2012. It took me many years to admit I was not able to lose weight on my own. After 4 different doctors recommended weight loss surgery, I met with Dr. Daryl Stewart on November 9. He recommended VSG for me. I still have not admitted to most of my friends or any of my family that I had the surgery. My husband is super supportive, as are the very few friends who are aware I had the procedure done. The holidays were a little tough, but overall I have done well, except for a gas-y stomach making it hard to swallow anything - including water. I spend my waking moments trying to get enough water down to keep fr…

Hello - My name is Sharon. I recently had surgery on 12/26/2012 so my journey is just beginning. This is my first full day home post surgery. I underwent revision surgery e.g. from a lapband to gastric sleeve. In a way I feel like a failure because I already had one WLS that didn't work for me; and now, here I go again with another one. If this doesn't work, I'll just give up. I'm 52 yo and sometimes think what does it matter if I'm overweight, who cares anymore because I'm getting older, BUT I care; so here I am again - praying that it works out the way I hope. Right now, I'm not feeling very good. I feel bloated, like something is pressing on me e.g. gas. I'm …

Hello! This is my first post, I'm getting sleeved on thu in Tijuana. I'm really nervous but also excited. I've had butterflies in my stomach for days. I can't wait to be on the other side of this. I'm 26 and in the last 4-5 years I've gone up to 360 lbs, I remember when I was 180 in high school and thinking I'm never going to let myself get to 200 and now I'm heavier than ever. I'd considered getting surgery for a couple of years but never really looked into it, but seeing my friend go through with it and seeing how awesome she looks and feels about her self, i decided it was time! I've been reading around this forum for a couple of months and I'm so glad i found it! It's…

Hi! My name is Amanda, I'm 29 years old and I'm new here. I've been a long time lurker but never joined until I finally made the decision to go ahead with the surgery. I currently live in Southern California and have chosen to go to Mexico to get the surgery done. My insurance doesn't cover WLS and the couple of surgeons I have met here in Cali have all made me feel like I was just $$$ to them since I would be cash pay. I will be having my surgery on March 22, 2013 and am excited yet nervous. No one in my family supports my decision as they all think I should just eat better and exercise. I've been told having the surgery is the "easy way out". Anyway, I just wanted to in…

Hi everyone. I am new to the site. I have not gotten my surgery yet. I just finished doing all the requirements for insurance approval and had my 2nd apt yesterday. I must say it has been a little discouraging because it seems my Dr. has tried to push me towards gastric sleeve. I have been considering and researching lap band for 3-4 years not going to make a drastic decision to change. I am now waiting insurance approval. The Doctor did tell me to research lap band with plication. I looked into this last night on the computer. Apparently it's a band but they also staple your staple your stomach into a banana like shape. Seems to be like gastric sleeve without the cuttin…

Hey guys, I looked on this page and others before choosing my doctor, so I figured I would share my experience now that I am done! I know it is a little bit long.....but it is everything I wish I would have known to ease my curiousity I went through Mexico Bariatric Center. Once I filled out the contact request I received an email from CHRISTY - who became my contact person the whole time. She was amazing! She was very friendly, stayed in contact with me frequently, stayed honest throughout, and made me feel like she was in it with me! I actually booked a surgery back in November....bought my ticket.....then chickened out. She did not try and persuade me at all! She …

Here is my story. I am 29 yrs old, married and a mother of 2 boys (ages 10 & 5). I have battled my weight my whole life and turned to food at a very young age to fill the emotional voids. It was my best friend, was always there for me and never judged me. I have battled with depression pretty much my whole life. I got pregnant when I was 18 and got married. Over the past 11 years I have been a yo-yo between 185, 215 and 230 being the highest. I have seen that damn 230 quite a few times. I delivered both my boys at exactly 230. I have lost and gained and lost and gained. In 2004 I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome and also insulin resistant. I we…

... And a little regret. I was sleeved on 10/22... I am down 38lbs... I do 30-45 min on the treadmill daily... I saw my doctor on Tuesday and he chastised me for losing too slowly... He had me on fish and eggs until Tuesday, but I jumped ahead to chicken because I was sick of fish and eggs... I have been eating high Protein, very little carbs averaging about 625 calories per day... My weight loss *has* slowed although my clothes fit better.. Now I am worried that I won't continue to lose and all this pain, frustration and throwing up will have been for an " only" loss of 40ish lbs... If this is it for weight loss, then I regret the surgery... It would be worth losing u…

I was rushing through the airport last night because I found out I wasn't going to get home and had to book a hotel on the other end when I encountered the longest ID review possible. The dude then asked for a second ID which fortunately I had, then he grilled me about my ID information.... Then after calling a supervisor he approves it, leaving me about 3 seconds to book the hotel and he says...ma'am, this ID is really inaccurate and the picture barely resembles you you need to update it before your next flight. I've only lost 45lbs but my face does look a lot different. I hadn't looked at my DL lately Guess I have to go back and get a new one LOL I was ki…

My company got new insurance for 2013, so I will (hopefully) be able to have surgery this year!! I started the process last year only to find bariatric surgery was not covered. I think I should qualify through the different requirements. I have some worries, and maybe they are dumb, but I'd love feedback! I am 30 years old, 5'3" and weigh 250 lbs. I've never been smaller than a 10. But at a 10, I still seemed to have a lot of extra flab. Especially my upper arms, they have been disproportionately large my whole life. So I worry that when I lose weight I'll have all of this extra skin on my arms. Or my arms will stay fat and never be normal size! Has anyone had their…

Hi Everyone! This is my second attempt at gastric surgery. The first time was a roux-en-y gastric bypass back in 2005. My provincial health insurance covered it because I was so sick (dibetes, fatty liver, arthritis, etc. etc.) I was 294 lb when I started and got down to 135. Then after about 5 years the weight started to creep up, even though I was following the eating plan: proteins first, then veg, then carbs. No sodas or sweet or carbonated beverages. My main mistake at the time was taking water before and during meals. My gastric pouch stretched and got bigger so I could eat more. As I got fatter I gave up on myself and slipped more, eating sweets and drinking per…

Hi, I'm Sara. I've completed all my classes (6 months) and was rejected. I just completed another three months and I'm waiting to hear if my insurance will go through this time. I'm only 36 but my health is suddenly deteriorating. I always enjoyed good health despite my weight but now I am struggling with diabetes, high cholesterol, and my arthritis doc says I'd be a candidate for a knee replacement if I were older. This has to stop! I hit an all time high weight of 298 and I'm afraid I'm just going to keep going up and up. I am so tired of food and eating. I'm sick of it being such a hassle. I want to eat to live, not live to eat. I'm also very nervous about the …

January 2nd bandster here wish me luck everyone. I am lucky to have not been prescribed an all liquid diet but I am doing a 2 Protein shake a day diet with one regular meal minus starch carbohydrates. It is not bad at all and I really look forward to my future with the band. I'm a little nervous about the after affects of eating with the band right after surgery. I have this horrible vision of me gulping Water too quickly and then throwing up and my band exploding. Lol, well not the band exploding, but I definitely am nervous about me doing something wrong. Can I ask any experienced bandsters what the hunger feeling is like the first week or so after surgery? Do you …

I've already posted a few times so this is a bit late. Sorry. I'm a 50 year-old guy who's been through every diet there is. I grew up as a chubby kid but grew out of it by mid high school. At graduation I was probably 6'1" and 180. College was, among other things, a beerfest. Graduation from there had me at 6'4" and 245 (a pretty soft 245). I look at pix from then and I remember thinking I was an Orca though the pix don't bear that out. Funny. Throughout the years I've spent lots of time in the gym and the kitchen. The more I tried to get in shape the fatter I got because excess effort always seemed to cause disproportional excess hunger. The only time I did…

I had the sleeve done Dec. 18,2012. Comming out of surgery I had immense pain all over my chest and body. It was very difficult getting up to walk around the hospital. I started to really regret what I had put myself through. Knowing there was no undoing this, just made feelings of regret worse. The next morning my Doctor came for a visit and told me he almost decided to call off the surgery when he saw 2 tumors on my stomach. He decided to go ahead with it and take those 2 masses out at the same time. In Doing this he had to make my sleeve a little smaller than normal; this made my taking in liquids and now foods more difficult; but I am really glad he did it. M…

I've been reading this forum for weeks but I think it's time I finally join and introduce myself. I'm Christie, from south Louisiana and have been interested in gastric sleeve surgery for over a year. My surgery date is 12/28/12. I've done my homework on the technicalities of the surgery and want to thank all of the members of this forum for letting me look into their experiences. The most nerve wracking part of this part of the journey is not knowing exactly what to expect. I'm writing a list of what to pack for the hospital and trying to figure out what I need to get done before I go in. This isn't as simple as I expected. Will it be necessary to have someone with me…

Hi all -My name is Tad. In July, 2007, I had Lap Band surgery. In the last 5 years, I have lost over 160 pounds. 4 months ago, I started to have some complications with my band. On January 23, 2012, I will be having the lap band removed and conversion surgery to the gastric sleeve. I was just wondering if any one in the forum has had a similar procedure. Thanks for your communication! Tad

Hello! I've lurked here for over a year, joined recently and have decided to post! I am approved and cleared for surgery, have secured my money and all the doctor is waiting on is me. I've been toying with this for about 6 years now and only recently did it become a reality where I could afford it. Up until this point, I couldn't and my insurance won't cover. My question I guess is this.. now that it can happen why am I dragging my feet? I can't pinpoint why I am so scared to just go do it. I'm your average on paper healthy (if you didnt look at my weight) 43yr old who just happens to be 100lbs overweight. I see what obesity has done to my 6 siblings who are ol…

Hi everyone! I am a newbie to the forum, and have been lurking for a couple of weeks. The lapband was introduced to me years ago, however at that time I wasn't ready to persue the idea. About a month ago, I started really thinking about it. I went to a seminar, and had a consultation with a doctor. The doctor I met, wasn't really personable. He kept telling me that I needed to ponder and think about this longer than just a few weeks. Plus, he was rushing us through the consultation. He continued to look at his watch, and seemed irritated that my dad and I had so many questions. Anyways, I just wanted to introduce myself and say hello to the fellow banders o…
