PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Hello everyone, I'm new here and considering the gastric sleeve. I have read a great deal of information on this and I want everyone's opinion on which doctor you liked in Mexico and what do I do about post opp doc visits or do I even need to do this? Where do I get the right vitamins? Any post op info is helpful. I do not meet my insurance for help paying. Sent from my XT1650 using BariatricPal mobile app

I went to seminar on 12/29, started my appointments Jan 6th and was approved by Cigna within 3 days two weeks ago. Easy process! I am 5'4", 255.8 as of this AM. Anyone else on 5/23? [emoji4]

  6. Hi there! I just joined and have so many questions. ? I'm thinking of doing the vsg in 2 weeks but I'm scared and also worried that because of my thyroid issue I might gain weight after surgery. I am 1.63 and 181 pounds. My bmi is 32. I'm really struggling and I'm so desperate to lose this weight. If there's anyone on here that has similar health issues and has been successful with a vsg please reach out. Thank you in advance. ❤️

Since my surgeon moved my date up to the 24th of May, it's gotten real. I was on a protein shake diet the last week to prepare, not being told by the nut I had to do a clear liquid diet. My preop appt was yesterday and I was informed that not only do I need to start a preop liquid diet, but that my favorite protein drink (premier protein) is on the list of protein to stay away from. It's due to the calorie to protein ratio. I did get a lot of wonderful information though and even though I really don't want to take an extra trip an hour and a half down to the valley for hospital preregistration and testing, they did call me to get that scheduled for the 23rd. I packe…

  8. Has anyone used a chiropractor for medically supervised weight loss? I like mine better than my Pcp and already go once a month. They offer nutritional counseling, but they don't typically do a weigh in. I'm sure they could though. Anyone used this to meet the insurance requirements? (BCBS Federal). The book doesn't specify, it just says medically supervised. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app

  9. Submitted my paperwork with my surgeon and it is being sent off to my insurance. They gave me a tentative date for 4/20 at 7 AM!!! Both my pre-op appt and hospital registration appointments are set too. Totally stoked and excited and nervous! Any one else having their surgery and/or tentatively scheduled your sleeve surgery for around 4/20ish? Would love to hear from ya, if so!

I'm so glad I found this forum!! I am joining the sleeve club June 20th. I have been reading about people experiencing a lot of hunger after surgery. Isn't the sleeve supposed to remove or at least reduce hunger? My hubby had a gastric bypass 3 years ago and I he is just now starting to say he feels hungry. Just wondering how many veteran sleevers felt hungry after surgery? Sent from my SM-G900T3 using BariatricPal mobile app

I am new...to all of this ? I have gone all the way through all of the pre requirements and have decided to get a second opinion as I can't decide if I would be suited for sleeve or gp (and I wasn't a super fan of the surgeon I met with) But in the meantime, I am wanting to start experimenting with protein shakes and am curious if anyone has found any they like (or tolerate) and will be suitable for post surgery

I am preparing my budget and lifestyle toward premier protein being my liquid protein supplement. My nutrition class is on June 20. I have started incorporating premier protein as a meal replacement for breakfast. I like to be prepared for my new lifestyle. My surgery is July 17 2017. I have already set up a re ocurring shipment through shop premier protein. Caramel is hard to find in my area so I figured to order it from them and the other flavors I can buy at Wamart. It is the best tasting protein supplement I have ever had so I plan to use it post op and for life in general. I had my psych evaluation yesterday, does anyone feel like they were trying to make you have an eating disorder? She kept talking about bringing and purging, I had to tell her several times I don't gorge on food and I don't make myself throw up. I had to complete 375 questions on a Scranton which was torture. I've had a psych evaluation to be law enforcement and I did my test by computer and the person who completed my evaluation didn't try to change my answers they accepted my honesty.

I am currently 349 (Final review I was 342, mainly gained weight from water weight from time of month) I am preparing the nesting cycle. What all should I bring with me to the hospital? I need to make a list! I am not worried about the surgery, I am looking forward to being healthier and putting on clothes that I like. I am staying one day in the hospital, and my fiance will bring me the nintendo switch when I am up in my room.

Alongside of dealing with the pain of losing my father, my hero, (I am 23, he was not supposed to leave me this soon) and dealing with attorneys for his estate and lawsuit, i am in the middle of my pre op diet and going through the motions and I am losing my insurance. Unfortunately, my insurance won't cover the surgery, so I have to pay out-of-pocket. I have made an initial consultation appointment to see Dr. Beltre in Altamonte, Springs, Florida. How does this work? Meaning, I know insurance companies make you wait anywhere from 3-6 months. Do you still have to go through the waiting period? Ideally, I would like to have the surgery as soon as I can so I won't miss out on summer fun with my boys (ages 11-17). Plus honestly, I'm afraid the longer I wait, the more apt I am to chicken out.

I am scheduled for June 26th and am wondering if it is safe to travel the next week. I would be packing shakes and broth and such, but I'm wondering if that is pushing myself too hard after surgery. I've contacted my Dr's office and asked if I could do my one week post-op that Friday, June 30th. With the next week being Fourth of July, I'd like to be away from neighborhood barbeques and the socializing. I'd be within a few hours of home in case I needed to go in. For those of you who have been through it, do you think it's doable? I wouldn't drive. I'd just be the passenger and it would mainly be hanging out watching my son play. I appreciate you…

  34. Hey all, I'm in my pre-op diet phase right now, and I'm drinking 3 premier protein shakes and a cup of broth in the evenings. It's tough, but so far, it's going well. I am obviously very fatigued, but I feel like my calorie intake may be too low. I was getting ready to go out today and almost passed out. My stats are 6'0/309/35yo female. I'm taking in about 500 calories a day, give or take about 20/day. I asked my NUT if my calorie intake is too low and she said not to be concerned about it since I'm only on it for a little while and it shouldn't cause problems. So I just wanted to ask around, how many calories were you all getting in during the pre-op die…

Hi all, Has anyone here switched from a lap band to gastric bypass? I'm having issues with my band and my doctor is saying we may need to remove it. If so the option is to either simply remove or to remove and if possible to a bypass. I'm very nervous and am wondering if anyone would be willing to share their experience? A little background: I had my lapband in 2007 and for the first few years I did great. I lost 145 pounds. At about the 4 year mark I started having issues with heartburn and night cough and had a series of unfills that put me at about 50% restriction and over the last 6 years I've gained back about 100 lbs. However, after a cold in January…

One of the reasons I'm really eager to have weight-loss surgery is because I want to travel! It's embarrassing to ask the flight attendant for the seat belt extender, and to have to keep pulling my CPAP machine out of my carry-on bag at the security checkpoint. I don't like getting winded as I walk around, and I especially don't like being unable to do certain things because of physical limitations. Two thoughts are going through my mind: Am I going to regret the surgery because I won't be able to enjoy food when I travel? How will I be able to make good food choices when I'm eating out three times a day? Anyone else grappling with these issues?
