PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Hi everyone! So I have all my pre op requirements done-6 months with a nutritionist, sleep study, psych evaluation..but I know I have to do the pre op diet class. Does anyone know when that is done in the process/before or after submitting to surgery/how long/if it costs?? I meet with my surgeon tomorrow but I'm curious now. Lol

  3. My surgery is on Thursday and my hospital dropped the ball and didn't verify my insurance so I have no idea what my out of pocket is going to be for them. I'm one of the lucky ones whose plan covers 90% of the allowed amount with no deductible applied since I am using a Blue Center of Excellence. I'm just not sure what to anticipate out of pocket. I only had to pay my surgeon $124! Obviously the hospital is much more costly. Any one else have the same type of coverage? What did your out of pocket come to?

  4. I am scheduled to have first of two major surgeries ending in a gastric sleeve (first is to reverse rny and fix hiatal hernia) on June 1st and I am traveling soon after to Las Vegas from Seattle by plane (about June 14). Has anyone traveled by plane that soon after surgery and is it wise or will it be a mistake? What is anyone's experience? Karenytrevision

  6. To all the new people joining who are preop, the struggle is real even pre surgery! Your body odor will very noticeably change - usually for the worse - once you start losing. Mine went from almost no odor post workout to "oh for heavens sakes, something died in my armpits and crotch!" Right around the 40 pound mark loss. If you are like me and have used the same cheap deodorant since middle school, plan a burial ceremony now because you'll need something much stronger. You will get unsolicited advice at the gym and people will stare. Realize most are just wanting to help and are unsure how to approach it. Smile, be thankful, and very quickly you'll have some reliable gy…

Hello!! I'm new to this forum, I've finally decided that its time for a change. I come from a family with weight issues and have been overweight my whole life. Now with certain health issues arising of my own I've decided it's time to really take my problems by the throat and fix my weight issue!! I'm super excited to be starting this journey and I went to my primary doctor and sent in a referral to a bariatric doctor.. I have tricare prime, but I was wondering after your first appointment how long did it take for you to get your surgery date? Thanks!! [emoji3]

Hi guys im new to forum! So my bmi is at 40.3 with no complications. I have been referred to a surgeon for gastric bypass and I have completed any requirement that my insurance may ask for. I did 6 months of a supervised diet amd got cleared by the dietician and mey with the psychiatrist and with the surgeon. Sooo I've decided to go through with weight loss surgery and hope to join you all on the journey! I meet with my surgeon tomorrow and I have no idea what to expect. This will be my very first appointment so I believe he's going to just give me the options and go over more of the basic things. (Seminar is the in on the 15th & PCP is seeing me on the 30th) I feel like I'm doing things backwards lol. I've done research for so long so I do know that my insurance covers the surgery and will be requiring a 6 mo supervised diet He'll probably be going over that too, then after I hope to get most, if not all, appointments in between. My ultimate fear is that my insuranc…

  13. I'm looking for surgeons in NC that accept Medicaid as a primary. I was referred last week by my new PCP, that I have a LIST of pre existing conditions caused by my weight . Three of the programs I've looked into only accepted Medicaid as a secondary insurance. Recently I started a new job the pay isn't all that great and insurance takes effective, once I'm employed 90 days. The premiums alone are over half of my pay check. So now I have to look for a program that accepts my primary insurance (Medicaid) , to start the process all INFO is greatly appreciated. I am willing to travel as well as long as its in the state of NC. Medicaid does cover bariatrics in NC my PCP is wi…

I've been talking to friends and acquaintances who have told me crazy stories about what they have heard about getting the Sleeve done. When they hear that I had the surgery there fascinated and are stunned because I appear normal and healthy. Why? Because I am!!! Stop believing the negative hype!!! More and more people are getting it done. Remember the successes move on with their lives, because it's better for them. The negative stories are few and only appear on sites like this to scare you. If you are Sick of Being Sick and Tired!!! Take A Leap Of Faith!!!! It's worth the sacrifice of a two month liquids and soft foods. Do It!!!!!!

  18. Hey all, I'm currently awaiting insurance approval. My BMI at time of submission to insurance was 42 or 43. I'm easing into my preop diet now, but I'm worried that by time of surgery my BMI may go under 40. My question is, if insurance approves surgery and you go below 40 BMI prior to surgery, will there be any issues with insurance paying for the surgery? Thanks!

  19. Hi everyone I am 23 years old I am a wife and I have an almost 3 year old daughter and I am going through the WLS journey. I meet with my nutritionist tomorrow and that will complete my 6 month weight loss class required from my INS, after that I have a nutrionist group class and a psychological appointment and possibly that will be it until i meet with my surgeon. I am trying to get feed back on anyone that was as young as me that got the surgery or is on the same boat as me. I guess I can say I'm a bit scared and open to any advice. FYI this is my first time to this group as well so I am kinda new to this but very much excited!

  21. (Posted in the wrong surgery preop group I'm having the sleeve) Less than 2 weeks from surgery and my official preop diet started Wednesday however I started a week and a half earlier to adjust because I knew I would need time. I did great during the time that I was doing it that I wasn't required to but now that I'm actually required to be on it I'm struggling with wanting food from already being on it so long. I do a shake every 3 hours for a total of 5 shakes a day. I get in a lot of water but don't do any broth because the sodium in the broth makes me feel nauseous and shaky. I'm wondering what others do/did as far as the timing between shakes. I'm thinking of switch…

Ugh I had a really bad morning eating this morning. I only have two weeks left until everything gets submitted to insurance for approval. This morning I started out fine with a protein shake then ended up gorging on corn puffs and chocolates. I'm going to pick myself up and eat better tonight but I feel disappointed in myself.

For me I have: Deep clean bathroom Vacuum Clean out kitchen non bariatric foods Do all dishes Get car professionally cleaned for trip Get oil changed Clean litter boxes Clean pet bowls Sweep/mop Walk through with pet sitter Put fresh sheets on bed Take out trash This is a small list and I feel there is more. Hello, all. I am new here. I am pre-op. I am excited but also really nervous. Mostly about controlling cravings. I have strong cravings for sweets/carbs every day. I am trying to change my diet pre-op so that I can create better habits but I am finding it really hard and I give in to the temptations. My biggest fear with the surgery is that afterward, my cravings will return and I won't be able to control them. I have like almost zero will power, too, which doesn't help. Can anyone tell me what cravings are like after the surgery? Do they go away? Do they come back with a vengeance?

  43. Hi all! I'm at the beginning of the process. Got all my appointments scheduled. Saw my nutritionist on 3/20/2017. See my shrink on 3/27/2017. Got an ab ultrasound on 3/30/2017. So far so good with keeping a food journal. Working on my exercise that seems to be the hardest thing. It will take 6 months for me to get thru the pre-op requirements. Chose gastric bypass. Just want want support, encouragement and any helpful info. Thanks!
