PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by ambergene,

Hi everyone! So I am currently on my 2 week diet before surgery. And I was wondering if it would be okay if I had a piece of ham tomorrow at dinner? Normally i can only eat the product from my doctors office but I wasn't sure if a cheat meal would be Okay! Ps. I have already lost 10 pounds in 5 days from this diet.

So excited and nervous! After 8 months I have been approved and have a surgery date of April 24th! To all that also have upcoming surgery dates good luck, happy healing and lets do this!

I know I shouldn't be in a hurry but I am reading on a lot of websites that it takes two years or people to reach their target weight as opposed to one year for people who got gastric bypass surgery on average. Has that been your experience? Any feedback would be great thanks. I also read that people with a higher BMI to start (mine is 51) will lose the wight quicker. Any insight would be great. Thanks!

Hi y'all I recently booked my consultation for my gastric sleeve procedure. I've been thinking a lot lately about the loose skin after major weight loss. How bad really is it?? I've heard some people have no problems and I've heard others that needed a lot of plastic surgery to fix it. I'm 19 years old and about 300 lbs. Is there any chance the excess skin might not be tooooo bad? My mom was originally on board for this whole thing, but she remembered that aspect and now is trying to talk me out of the surgery. Thank you in advance!

Maybe someone on here can help me because everytime I call Humana for an answer I get a different one. So the requirements are changing for surgery effective May 1,2017, to me this means that I would need to complete each of these requirements within 6 months before my surgery. What do u all think? Clinical record* of participation in and compliance with a multidisciplinary surgical preparatory regimen (within 6 months prior to surgery) which includes the following: o Absence of weight gain during the course of the program; AND Behavior modification regarding dietary intake and physical activity (unless medically contraindicated); AND o Nutrition…

I'm getting my lapband removed on 4/24/17 after a year of difficulty, gaining weight back originally lost 80 lbs have gained back 55 lbs after having Fluid out then put back in when I had breast reduction surgery performed a year ago. Have reflux and spasms diagnosed with esophageal dysmotility common problem with band. My surgeon is removing it then I am told I have to wait 4-6 months to get converted to gastric bypass. I'm 66 years old going to be 67 in October. Frustrated that I have to wait. Able to eat much more then before thank God but scared to death I will gain all my weight back. Has anyone else had to wait that long and how did they do? I have great respec…

  9. Hi all! This is my first post here, my dietician suggested I join to get some input from others on some of my nagging worries. I keep telling her I just cannot even fathom that I won't be constantly almost panic inducing-ly preoccupied with food like I am now, especially with such restricted calories. I have a long history with restriction and exercise bulimia then rebound binge eating disorder and lots of therapy under my belt plus a year of pre-op certification to get approved. I'm just so scared this is how I'll always be. (I am stable enough for surgery, all of my team agrees.) I was a maniac at the peak of my restriction, eating 1000 calories a day and going to the g…

I'm just starting out in kaiser .. I had my orientation today & met with the surgeon & nutritionist . My doctor says I'll be fine with either sleeve or bypass surgery.. BMI is 40 & was surprise he says I'll be fine with either one ... no Gurd issues no diabetes.. however I do have severe apnea and hypothyroid high blood pressure high cholesterol ... I was leaning towards sleeve until I talk with my dr today now I can't decide. I know they both have good success rates.. pros and cons.. ? i've been reading it over and over again on line ... any input would be really helpful or good success stories

So.....I'm a weekend away from surgery. I'm definitely feeling some anxiety. There was never a spot in this process where I considered not going through with surgery. I've fretted over the money, the lifestyle changes and all the possible outcomes (good, bad and mediocre). But through all that....I've never swayed from the necessity of this surgery. For me, it's not a matter of am I ready?....it's a matter of do I want to live? Now, 3 days out I'm feeling anxious. For the first time I'm concerned about safety. I trust my dr and have done enough research to know he's exceptionally qualified and experienced. I know the statistics for surgery. I know that in all likelihood, …

Hi. I am having my sleeve surgery in June. I am a complete carb-aholic! I have decided to cut my carbs now, so I'm not doing it all at once. My problem is, what do you eat for breakfast? And what types of foods contain "good" carbs? I am completely ready to do this, but I just need the knowledge of how to do it RIGHT!

It's really pissing me off because I got cleared by both dietician and bariatrician, I just needed the ok from the psychologist. Ever since I started the program I haven't gained a pound and have lost every visit. I've increased my activity by a great deal yet, it feels like she makes it seem as if it's no effort. I exercise for 45mins and I'm very independent, so I clean, cook, etc. while standing. Anyways she's saying that ppl who get the surgery are encouraged to exercise up to 2hrs and 1/2....Has anyone else been told this?

I received my approval for surgery and planned to go to Tijuana in August. Now I am so nervous about having it done and thinking maybe I can try to lose weight without the sleeve one more time. Though, I'm not sure how this time would be any different than every other time I've lost 40 lbs, given away my entire wardrobe, and then regained 50lbs. Anyone else get cold feet this early in the game? How did you deal?

Hello! I've had such low energy since is started my diet. I'm guessing it's the no carbs. I am curious as to how everyone else is getting energy through the day?

  29. Well, to start, I'm having the bypass done, hopefully some day soon. I finished all of my pre-op evaluation visits. On 2/27, I did as I was told and called to tell them that I was done. The girl I spoke to said she would get my file all set and have the surgeon evaluate it. This could take a few days. (not so much!). I waited a week with no idea where I stood, so I called again. He still had not gone over my file. The girl told me to give it some more time and had no idea when he will look at it. WTF!! At 2 weeks out from calling the first time, I called again. The girl I spoke to this time pulled up my chart and said they have all my test results, but the surgeo…

As each day passes and my surgery grows closer, I think of how my life will change. I wonder what will it be like to eat to live instead of living to eat. What will I do instead of eating? What do I look forward to if I am not eating? I have built my life around eating. Vacation meals will no longer be a focus point. Family gatherings will be for the family instead of the food at the gatherings. Wednesday night Mexican with my daughter will be just for my daughter instead of what I am going to be eating. Thanksgiving and Christmas will be strange. Sorry folks, just thinking out loud! I hope I can do this!

Anyone feel like your journey is never going to begin? (Lol taking forever!) May seem like silly questions but I don't want to waste money on the wrong things if I don't have to. 42. I've tried premier protein shakes and genepro powder. I can't stand the taste premier and could even taste genepro though it's supposed to be tasteless. More than that they both made me so sick. Nausea and a burning pain in my stomach for the rest of the day after just a little bit of them. Anybody else have this issue? I'm nervous about getting enough protein in after surgery if I don't find something that's easier on my stomach.
