PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

I have a way to look at my auths online. It was in Medreview and now it says PEND. Most everything I have seen goes straight from review to approved. What does this mean??

  3. I have an appt set (the 3 hr one) with the Surgeon, Nutritionist and Coordinator. I was wondering what the process is after that? I know that they give you a set amount of weight to lose, but if I lost the weight pretty quick, is there still a lot to do? Trying to gauge a timeline being a mommy and all. Thanks!

  9. So today was my appointment to meet with the psychologist as one of the requirements to be approved for surgery by my insurance company and at the end of the meeting the psychologist said I am definitely depressed and he wants me to have a few counseling sessions. Now I've already self diagnosed myself with depression and have been wanting to see a psychologist for some time now but the issues I have, have nothing to do with my weight, it's deeper than that. I do wonder what I said to make him come to that conclusion tho. But anywho, by him saying that I am depressed that won't hinder me getting approved for surgery will it?

Hi all, My VSG surgery date is 4/20/17. Over the past few months, I've realized that I have an issue with being in control. I'm a married mother of 3 with a full time job that is very demanding so I have to be in control of my life or things will fall a part. I feel like this need to control every situation will affect me in a negative way with my surgery so I decided to start seeing a therapist. My first appt is this coming Saturday. This process has proven to be just as much mental as it is physical and I want to make sure I am addressing both pieces in order to be successful. Anyone else decide to go to therapy on their own? If so, is it helping? Shy

  11. 6 weeks ago My PCP was the one to recommend WLS and refer me to my surgeon. My PCP had already seen me for 3 months prior to the referral, so that left only 3 months more of dr monitored weigh ins. With a bit of phone work and scheduling magic, everything fell in line beautifully with my nutritionist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, and psychologist. I've officially received clearance for all of those requirements. What hit me this morning was that I only have 2 months of PCP weigh ins to focus on and so far in the past 6 weeks have lost 30 pounds on my dr monitored diet and exercise program. I had gone into the diet with a personal goal to lose a total of 18-28 pounds bef…

Last week I had my consultation. When the surgeon walked in he told me he was surprised I was leaning towards RNY instead of VSG. He discussed both and said he would do either one, but it was up to me to choose. He didn't want to tell me what I should do, but he also said if he had just read my chart (5'6, 260, no major health issues) he would have said VSG was good option. I'm worried I won't lose enough of my weight if I get VSG. I'm worried that VSG won't be drastic enough to help me make changes. Worried that I'll have complications because RNY has more risks than VSG. During my 2nd C-section my OBGYN mentioned removing excess scar tissue from my 1st C-section, so now…

Howdy folks - I'm a 41 year old software engineer (tells you about how physically active my job is :), and since I was diagnosed with MDD about 3-4 years ago and started on a 100 mg Zoloft (sertraline) regimen, my weight went from around 180 lbs to a current 204 lbs (I'm 5'8"-ish), without any change in eating habits or exercise patterns. God bless psychiatry whom I was a major skeptic of until I realized depression for some people isn't caused only by situational circumstances but also genetics and heritage contribute to much of it as well... My entire family has been dealing with their own anxiety and depression in other ways, via alcohol, lustful activities, gambling, …

I'm being sleeved on 19th April - I've told mum, my sister, Hubble and 1 friend. It is something really private that I don't feel comfortable telling people but I don't want to glibly say 'eating less and exercising' and perpetuating myth that will result in weight loss. Any suggestions for something vague but not dishonest to tell people?

  29. Hi everyone, I'm in the process of deciding if getting a sleeve is right for me. I've been to a doctor already and they have explained everything about the surgery and what kind of commitment is needed for the change in life style I'm about to go through. He did say I was a great candidate for the surgery. I've been reading posts on here for a few days now and there seems to be a lot of success stories with a few not so good stories sprinkled in. I'm just looking for some advice about whether or not getting this surgery is worth. I'm just looking for any advice you guys can give me. 32. Good morning everyone, I have a question about protein powders and liquids. I've been doing some reading and research but this is not something I've used before. Since most of them are whey based and/or contain milk derivatives and products, what is the shelf life? For example, post-op, I will only be drinking two ounces at a time, to start. If I'm using a premixed liquid protein drink, how long will it last in the refrigerator once I open it? I think the containers are about 16 oz. that could last days. Also, adding protein powder to things like Jell-O and pudding that I would pre make in 2 ounce containers. How long will that protein be good in the refrigerator prepared…

One pre made Premier Protein Choc, and the other three made with two different protein powders in unsweetened vanilla almond or soy milk. three cups of broth/stock and one sf Jello cup. 39. Hi, Has anyone been given a surgery date before insurance approved? I've been given a surgery date of April 20th, however, I have my last few appointments are on April 5th and 13th. I called the doctors office and they said they will submit paperwork to my insurance company after my appointment on the 5th. The insurance could deny at anytime up to the day before my scheduled surgery. That's seems a bit odd to me. Any input would be appreciated.

Has anyone gained weight before starting their pre-op diet? Were you still approved?

  42. Started by FollowingMyPath,

So.....I'm scheduled for May 2nd, and my dr doesn't require a pre-op diet. Which is awesome! But also not awesome. I trust my dr, as he is very well respected and has been doing these surgeries for a very long time (and I know several people who have used him). But, I still feel a bit anxious that I have no required diet. So, I thought I'd do it on my own. Can't hurt and I'm hoping it'll help me get into the right mindset. Can anyone share the kind of pre-op diet they're following? Thanks!!

  48. Getting to the hospital at 11 tomorrow. I'm so so nervous. It hasn't hit me until RIGHT NOW. I've felt horrible on this liquid diet, I've had such anxiety in general, and just getting over being sick, still have a cough and stuffed up nose. I'm terrified of coughing tomorrow and the pain I'll feel in my stomach when I do ): I'm not having second thoughts or anything, I think I'm more anxious like I just wanna freaking start this new life already. But I'm so worried to find out if it's gonna turn out bad or good that I'm starting to panic. I have a pretty severe paranoia disorder so my mind goes to the worst. Hi everyone! So I am having my surgery tomorrow - which I am pretty excited and equally just as nervous about and I was wondering if your doc gave specific instructions on your diet for the day before surgery. I was put on a 2 week liquid diet with Protein shakes/broth/SF jello/ice pops... but I keep reading some people having to do a CLEAR liquid diet the day before. Not sure if that's any different from what I am already doing or if it rules out Protein shakes and anything with color like Jello? Please advise!
