PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Hi all I've got an appointment with a surgeon on 23rd June for a consultation for sleeve surgery. I am wondering could anyone offer advice or suggestions as to how best to alter my previous negative eating habits? Does hypnosis help or CBT or a counsellor? How best to proceed? Thanks in advance for all your help!! Kindest regards, Catherine Sent from my Nexus 6P using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi. I am going in for my sleeve surgery on Wednesday, my emotions have gone everywhere from excitement, to fear, to wanting to cancel to knowing this is my last chance at a normal life. I am mostly afraid of complications, but lately my mind has been on the future. I am on my pre-op diet this week (strictly meat and veggies) I don't eat much of either, I am wondering how I'm going to do if that is all I can have. I think adding yogurt, cheese and other dairy products in will be a big help. Did anyone else eat very little meats n veggies before surgery? I am ready to make changes, and I'm hoping that with some practice, I can learn to eat the foods I need to. I have lost 1…

Hi Everybody! My name is Kati and I am in Eureka, Ca. I am pre-op gastric bypass, and will be having my surgery done at UCSF with Dr. Carter (has anyone else had him???) My pre-op appt is June 7, and I have a tentative surgery date of June 26, which will be finalized at the pre-op appointment. I have yet to have my info sent to insurance, but the medical assistant at the surgeon's office has reviewed my file and has determined that I have met all of the insurance requirements, fingers crossed! I have to travel 5 hours for my surgery, and then home after, and am a bit nervous about that. Has anyone else had experience with this? I have been overweight since …

I have no family around or any who would want to travel to help me. Most of the people I know are married and/or have full lives so it is difficult to find someone. I asked my neighbor and offered her money. She told me to give her a surgery date and she would see if she could get the time off. However, if she can't then, I will be forced to start the search all over. I already know from last year that my insurance company will not cover a visiting nurse. Any suggestions?

Insurance approved my surgery! I am thrilled. I have to get clearance from my cardiologist and pulmonologist before surgery will be scheduled. They both support the surgery so I am not concerned with clearance as long as my chest x-ray looks good. Pulmonologist can't see me until July 3rd so waiting, waiting, waiting and calling to check on cancellations. THEN, they schedule surgery, pre-op visit and education class. Nurse said about 2 and a half to 3 weeks after clearance until surgery.

So I have decided to have sleeve surgery after being overweight for nearly all my life. What finally helped me quit waffling on the idea of surgery has been the combination of our grandson bringing so much love to our lives, wanting to be actively engaged in life again without physical pain, and seeing my amazing husband's success so far with sleeve surgery. I managed to lose 35 pounds as he worked toward his surgery date in April, supporting healthier choices and making changes in our lifestyle. I haven't lost one single pound since. Even doing the shakes twice a day along with him didn't help. He has been encouraging me along the way and wanted us to have surgery …

  14. Having gastric bypass this Monday the 12th. I had a vertical sleeve 5 1/2 years ago. Mainly becuase 2/3 of my stomach was up through my diaphragm , between my lungs geaded for my heart. He had to do a sleeve in order to get my stomach back in its place without destoying my diaphragm. The doctor could not put the mesh on to prevent another hiatial hernia because of all the stitches in my diaphragm, so I now have a small one again, and my acid is completely out of control, and also have a small trace of Barretts Esophagus. My only option to stop this horrid constant acid is gastric bypass. I have everything ready for my post op. Had a successful recovery from my sleev…

It's my first time here and I decided to join because the warmth and candour of your discussions is genuinely inspirational. I'm a little bit overwhelmed by the prospect of going under the knife in six weeks. I can't wait but nevertheless the prospect has stirred up all sorts of emotions - from fear to odd things like the anxiety about telling my five (he would correct me and say 'five and a half') year old son that his Dad is going into hospital. Everything seems scarily abstract and I'm imagining a lot about what could go wrong. I see the dietitian in nine days, so I suppose that will help me feel that this is more real - tangible is good for my sense of control…

I've just started this journey (requesting a referral from my PCP & having a phone interview), but I'm a bit unsure which procedure is best for me. Any insights, between DS & Roux en Y? Also, any recommendations for reference books? What have most people found helpful? Thank you so much!

Soon I will be on a strict protein shake/green vegetable diet for 2 weeks, followed by 2 days of liquids only before surgery day.) My question is: If you are on a pre op diet, what item do you miss the most? What tricks and inspiration do you use to keep from cracking? If you had asked me anytime in the last 3 years, I would have told you steak was my favorite food.. However in this case, I would do almost anything to be able to drink a glass of chocolate milk. I posted this in the post surgery forum but I thought I would also post this here since people may find it helpful before their surgery! Surgery date was 5/19 so almost two weeks. Thought I would update. I have to be honest, the first 3 - 4 days sucked! Nothing specific to the RNY just surgery in general (and I am a baby). Incision pain and internal stomach pain was not good. Spent 4 days in the hospital which was fine. Lots of pain meds and the nursing staff was awesome. I came hope totally scared of the new "system", i.e. digestive system. Worried I would eat to much or to fast or too hot, too cold, etc. Slowly figured how it works. Not as sensi…

Hi all. After a lot of thought and deliberation and discussion, my hubby and I have decided to go on this journey together. We're in the earliest possible stages-our first appointment with our surgeon is on the 19th. His cousin used the same surgeon in December and has had wonderful success, and has been an inspiration. My husband and I have decided to keep our decision private and have only told a select few. My question-can anyone tell me about their approval process with State of Florida Avmed? I'd love to hear about others' experiences with Avmed. I'm looking forward to going through this process with as much support and information as possible. Thank you!

Since money does not grow on trees for most of us and for those of us who are self pay, we need to try and save money when and where we can. I did not deal with or talk to the Dr. directly. I was only able to talk to his coordinator Henry Cortes. In the beginning, I expressed my interest in getting surgery with the doctor and I was not even asked for the questionnaire. I had talked to several other doctors and they all requested the questionnaire to see if you qualify based on existing co…

It could have been worse but it still eye opening that no matter how hard I sweat and work out... of your food intake is bad, your weight will reflect it. So now I'm reflecting on what I need to do this month to drop extra pounds. Uggghhh Just a little venting session
