I chose sleeve. I have a friend who had bypass & still struggles a lot with Vitamin absorption. I had a total thyroidectomy about 10 yrs ago & have to take Calcium, Vitamin D & other supplements. The sleeve I just feel good about & feel like it's right for me. I hope you find peace in whatever you choose. [emoji4]

I was also given the 2 options but finally decided on the RNY. I only had 80lbs to lose to reach surgeon's goal and 90lbs for my personal goal. I am diabetic and though both surgeries can help put diabetes in remission, I decided to stick to the gold standard. I figured that I might as well get the most out of WLS. I have not had any vomiting (knock on wood) and was back to work in 2 weeks. It only took about 3 days for me to recover, but the 2 weeks off helped me transition my diet. RNY post-ops take almost the same amount of supplements as sleevers--I could be wrong but I am taking Multivitamins, Vit B12, Iron, and Calcium with Vit D which I read sleevers also take. I have tasted sweets here and there but not enough to dump I guess. Of course, I log those in and take them into my daily calorie account. I'm sure you will do great with whatever you choose! Good luck!

I agree, I also went back and forth but ultimately went with Bypass. I wanted to lose as much as possible and it is gold standard. I seen too many issues w/ the sleevers along with the revisions.

not everyone dumps (the stats I read here and elsewhere are that 30% of RNYers dump. I don't know if there's any hardcore research behind that, but suffice it to say, lots of us don't dump). So I wouldn't necessarily use that as a reason to go with RNY, since many of us don't have much trouble with sweets (unfortunately....).

I went with RNY because I had GERD, so it was a no-brainer. But the other thing I liked about it was that it is a much older surgery (although techniques have changed and improved over the years) with a lot of long-term data behind it.

you have to take Vitamins with both surgeries (although more with RNY), but it becomes automatic after awhile. I don't even think about it. I take a small handful at Breakfast, a couple at dinner, another Calcium sometime during the day, and Iron before I go to bed. Deficiencies are pretty rare as long as you keep on top of your vitamins.

they're both good surgeries and people have had great success with both. I don't think you can really go wrong either way.

Thanks for the info, the sweets was just one of the reasons I was leaning towards the bypass,I also have issues, high bp,high cholesterol and high triglycerides, was hoping that losing more weight will help those issues as well.

I've been really happy with my bypass. I had almost no pain and recovery was much easier than I expected.

I'm a VSG (sleeve) patient. I had 150ish lbs to lose, but my doctor was confident I would be able to do it. I lost 170, over half my body weight, 100% of my excess weight, and have been maintaining for a year now.

Don't let the "sleeve will never let you lose as much weight as the bypass will" argument turn you one way or the other - you will lose as much weight as you put your mind to <3

I have a sister in law who is 7 years out from bypass, and her experiences are primarily what made me choose sleeve.

She is required to take Vitamins 3 times per day, but doesn't remember them often enough - had to have hip surgery and has developed bone issues from malabsorption (at 30 years old).

She also had a horrible time at her step-daughters (my niece) birthday party a few years ago, when she ate a few bites of cake and dumped horribly. I held her hair while she dry heaved into the toilet and that...was an experience.

I decided that one day, when I have kids, I'd like to be able to have a few bites of birthday cake at their birthday party, and not be incapacitated for the rest of the day, lol.

All this being said, it is a very case to case basis. MANY people have RNY and have none of these issues - many people have VSG and have a ton of issues. You take a chance either way, just like with any surgery :) hope you choose what's right for you!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
