PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

    Started by Guest,

Recently I've been experiencing a tremendous amount of hair loss. I'm 4 months post op. I take my vitamins and I'm also taking 10,000iu of biotin. Any other recommendations? Has anyone else experienced this? Will this eventually stop?

I got given my date at last yay I have a call saying someone else had cancelled their surgery so I was asked if I wanted to take their place.I obviously jumped at the chance and was asked to go in for my bloods to be done on the 14th October 2017 & my surgery date for 20th October 2017. I am on day 2 of the pre op diet and finding not having as much milk is hard as I love milk for my tea and coffee. Anyone else in the Uk that is on their pre op diet or post op get in touch. It would be good to hear from you.

I bought an incentive dress, I hope to wear it by February on the cruise. (If not it will fit at some point along the way and it was only $20!!!) I'm going to 'pet it' when my reserves get low.

Hey there! After doing my 6 month check-ins with my doctor, I am FINALLY approved by insurance and have a surgery date of October 10th. I have noticed on here that a lot of people have to do a liquid pre-op diet before surgery. My surgeon has me doing a pre-op diet that pretty much mirrors a ketogenic lifestyle. I'm curious to see if anyone else's program is this way? I can basically have any protein or vegetable I want, as long as it isn't startchy. It doesn't seem like it's going to be too bad for the 13 days. I just heard the withdraws from carbs can be bad. If anyone has any good snack or meal ideas, I'd love to hear them

Hey all... I had routine doctors appointments that turned up an unexpected issue that needs to be addressed. A cyst on my ovary has grown and changed in appearance, so my doctor wants that ovary removed. We're waiting for a consult to determine if it can wait until I'm approved and schedule for my sleeve, but the doctor wants it out ASAP. Has anyone else experienced unexpected finds like this? Did it effect getting approval for your bariatric procedure or impact the timeline for surgery?

I had my first appointment, I heard a lot of things about my doctors office staff, but everyone I’ve come in contact with has been fantastic. Just scheduled my egd to check for ulcers/hernia etc. I’m a little nervous about that. Any advice? My stress test will be the same day.

Including today I have 5 more days of liquid and protein shakes. Then full liquids then the big day!! I'm still so excited. We are also trying to move into a new home this month and my daughters getting her license the week of my surgery. So many changes. I'm happy I have many distractions so I can be on this liquid diet and not cheat.

So today is the big day for me, I’m scheduled surgery at 11:30 am. My nerves are a little crazy right now. I have all these mixed emotions going thru me, I’ve done plenty of research and know this is right for me but I’m still a little scared. Yet I try to remember this is only for my own benefit and for a healthier me. I assumed when the big day got here I would have been excited and happy and not have so many mixed feelings. Anyone else experience this?

  15. I want to thank you all for the well wishes. I am now four days post-op, and I'm feeling pretty well. It's so true what they say about not being hungry. I am forcing myself to get in the little bit that my body allows. It is so strange not being able to eat or drink like I normally would. It's like my body has an automatic shut off valve that says stop, that's it, and I just can't get anymore down. The hospital experience was so much better than I expected. The only thing that would have been awesome to know in advance was that they required TWO IV ports. One was for fluids and medications, and the other was in case I needed blood. So... the part I feared the most w…

My surgery isnt yet booked in but they are recommending in December or janiary. Before considering wls I had never been to hospital (as a patient) or even had my bloods done. So im freaking out a little [emoji85] Ive been told the bigger you are the more risk that is involved, I have already lost 5 stone but my BMI is still 61.5 or there abouts (High I know). Wondering if there is anyone with a BMI 60+ that has had complications other than what is considered normal post-op side effects. In my head if I know more about the complications and the likelihood of them, I can better prepare my self for any eventuality. Thanks [emoji4] Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal…

Tomorrow is the big day! All I keep thinking is at this time tomorrow I’ll be a post-op girl. My nerves are in high gear though. I’m so nervous that something will happen at the last minute like all of a sudden I get symptoms of the bug going around where I teach or the doctor won’t like the number on the scale before surgery. I don’t know. I’m just all over the place. Of all things to be scared of from this surgery, I’m freaking out about the IV. [emoji23] My bag is packed, and I’m ready! I’ll stop with the rambling now.[emoji23]

We went to an indoor waterpark at the Dells on Sunday and 9 of the 13 came down with the flu....mine is morphing into a head cold as well. And I want to have my whole house in order beforehand but my energy is ZERO!!! I guess there are no questions just ranting and 'tea and sympathy'!!!

I am out of network and my insurance simply isnt covering the surgeons entire program (surgery only) so I KNOW Im missing out on some things he would normally offer through his hospital but I just dont know exactly what (I dont know what I dont know...get it!!) They also changed NUTs on me and this new woman didnt study my case history and called me today to say she'd forgotten to tell me a few things. One being the night-before cleanse! **** show...Tomorrow is my official pre-op with my surgeon and I want to pummel him with questions! Toss your best ones my way

Hi everybody. I started my pre op liquid diet and I’m 4 days in. It’s not easy. I feel lightheaded and have no energy. I try to keep busy as much as possible. I drink protein shakes, jello sf, O% fat Greek yogurt and homemade soups. I can eat puréed soups as well right? Like broccoli soup or pumpkin soup. Why are all pre op diets so different? Some can eat lean meats or fish. Would it be really bad if I just ate some cooked tuna or chicken? Btw my surgery date is Oct 12

  35. PRE OP: I did two weeks on Optifast800, which was very "doable". I had 3 shakes, a soup, and a bar until the last two days, where the bar was discontinued. I found that drinking water (which apparently will be my new go-to) relieved any headache issue with the sudden drop in carbs & sugar in my day. I have lost, as of this morning, 15 or so pounds, plus 8 inches collectively from bust, waist & hips. I am hoping my liver is in good shape! (I know I have fatty liver per biopsy). I did not get a lot of walking in, which I had intended to do. Although the weather got cool & clear, my stomach reacted to the diet with great variability, meaning stay close…

My original clinic changed my dates on me (after I'd booked flights and hotels) and stopped communicating with me, so I've been having rather a stressful week. Bear in mind I was supposed to have surgery February 2nd so I didn't have a lot of time! I contacted another provider (I'm self pay) and they said they had the date free, but I needed surgeon approval. The good news is I have now been approved! I can use my original flights, though I'm still losing money on the hotels that I now won't be using. I'm so relieved, it would have been a real emotional blow to lose my surgery date so close to it happening. I do now have to do a pre-surgery diet, which I didn't have t…

  43. My appointment with my surgeon is this Thursday, Oct 5. So my surgery is immanent. I imagine sometime in Oct. I've spent the last several weeks buying the foods (liquids) that I will need pre-surgery and for the first month after surgery. We live remotely, I'm taking 1 week from work and work from home office, so the chances of me actually making it to the store in the first few weeks is about zero. So I'm stocking up and also trying out the items I am buying. Too bad you can't just buy ONE bottle of a protein drink. I figure I'll save massively on groceries the first month so I can "justify" my expenditures now, even if they don't work out. I am lactose intolerant an…

Does anyone know if this will cause a postponement of my surgery? I actually do not have a problem sleeping and am truly adverse to wearing a mask on my face every night. Is anyone aware of any other treatment or workaround in place of that mask or even any timeframe of how long the treatment takes? Any advice or comment is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I waited 6 months to go to orientation at the Iowa city university hospital where the doctor informed me that I would need to loose a 130 pounds before my case would even be submitted to the insurence company and the god knows how long that battle will be. If I lost that kind of weight I would almost be happy alone. Can anyone give testimony to being successful with this scenario because I could really use some hope right about now.

I’ve searched high and low for diet guides for pre-op. Surgery is on Thursday, so I’ll have to switch to the clear diet on Monday I guess. My doctor told me to start the pre-op diet 7 days before, but I started a couple days early. Now I feel completely fatigued. I currently don’t meet the BMI for the surgery but qualified due to co-morbidities. Are there any solid foods that I can eat tomorrow to hopefully give me some strength to make the final 3 days?
