PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Everytime I come close to thinking of this surgery and going thru with it, there are several people with my husband being the main one, telling me 'you don't want to live this way, having nausea and vomiting all the time", "Not being able to eat normally". I have explained that the co-morbidity issues are far more dangerous to live with than anything else but can't seem to get anyone to listen(my family). All the doctors I spoke to think I am nuts and say "those are rare cases" Not sure what to do or think anymore

I’m going to my 3 hour pre op appointment October 19, to get the rest of my information. Nutrition, and Dr appointment. Then run to the hospital next door to get my blood work done. I’m getting really nervous. Doing gastric sleeve with minimal support from family. Pre op diet starts October 24. Surgery is November 7, at 7:30 am.

I have bot flown since gaining so much weight. Im so nervous that I wont fit in the seat. How embarrassing! Does anyone know?

Doctor’s MA just called to tell me that insurance BCBS of TX denied my PA because they are requiring 6 dietician visits , I’ve completed 3 so far. Doctors office has been slow with everything to begin with started this process in May my deductible and Max OOP has been met 3 more dietician visits mean my plan starts over in January new deductible and Max OOP to meet so my surgery will no longer be covered at 100% as expected [emoji25][emoji22][emoji22][emoji22] how did the office not know that 6 visits where required vs 3? I got the call this afternoon. I recognized the number but was almost hesitant to answer. I have been already mentally preparing myself for the denial by reading some of the posts on here and the successes that people ended up having anyway...eventually... Does anyone know how long it takes for Aetna insurance approval. It’s been more than 10 days...every time I call their said is pending....does anyone has Aetna or any other insurance...how long did it take for the approval??

Hello all I am a new sleever . I got my surgery done September 26 2017. I'm down 23 lbs since surgery. I am in the full liquids transitioning into the purée stage . I've tryed everything and I can't keep my food down . Even the protein shakes flip my stomach. However I found a fix . I've been eating 2oz of Broccoli cheese soup for breakfast lunch and dinner and my snack is dark 2oz -4oz dark chocolate sugar free pudding. My last snack for the day ends at 8pm . I'm satisfied then but then I stay up later and then I get hungry . I get the tummy growling and all . Silly question is this normal?

I'm so excited to finally be this close! It's been an extremely long journey for me. I've been close before but it never happened due to various reasons. This time, it's happening! It's the closest I've been, all my clearances have happened, all my weight management, my psych eval is done! I'm currently scheduled for my preop and nutrition class on 10/23... I need some help, please. I have done everything required before surgery. My doctor now wants me to lose 30 lbs before he will even submit paperwork to my insurance for approval. My insurance DOES NOT require weight loss or a doctor supervised plan, this all my surgeon. I am getting frustrated because I cannot lose weight. In the last 3 weeks I have lost about 10 lbs. Usually I can lost 10-15 then I regain, it doesn't matter what I eat, how much I exercise, etc. That is the whole reason I am even having surgery to begin with. Should I be concerned that my primary cleared me for surgery without doing any type of lab work? She never had blood drawn and just went by my cardiology and pulmonary clearances (which did not perform lab work) should I call Monday and ask to have lab work done just in case?

I really need some support on here over protein shakes. I'm on my second day of my 2 week liquid diet and I'm already having trouble drinking my shake. Also, what are some other things I can eat? I'm curious to know, how do you take existing meds after surgery? I take metformin, and something for restless leg syndrome as ell as anti depressant, non I would want to chew or pre-desolve.

Just curious about everyone's experience and what/if there's a standard. Did your team help schedule pre-op stuff, or were you mostly on your own? Was there good communication throughout? I feel like my surgeon's office has taken a more hands off approach, which I understand to a degree. Certainly they are very busy. Not every patient wants to put in the work and eventually gets scared off. The pre-op stage seems like a very anxious time for a lot of people, so I thought there'd be more contact, is all. Not hand-holding or constant communication, per se. Just an every once in a while "Hey, how are we doing? Where are we at?" type of deal. Thanks!

Hello. After going through all of the many requirements by cigna, I was denied. My case worker and I were told that per my plan - I needed only 3 months supervised, but it turns out my employer has a 6 month stipulation. Needless to say I was very upset about the misinformation! Did anyone else get put on a lot of vitamins before surgery. I got my blood tests back awhile ago and they now have me taking a lot of vitamins. I was apparently deficient in these vitamins. They added B1,B6,D,Calcium Citrate, Iron, and C. I am on vitamin overload! Thats all in addition to my multi vitamin.

Has anyone gone from band To sleeve to bypass. I lost heaps of weight with band but had to get it removed, was replaced with sleeve and i have lost nothing. I struggle to keep weight off. Hi all! I had a group meeting recently with the dietitian at my doctors office to discuss the liver reduction diet. The dietitian made the suggestion to add a teaspoon of sugar free pudding to the shake to add more flavor. I must say this is the answer to making these shakes decent. So far I got chocolate, vanilla, banana cream and lemon pudding for my shakes. Just thought I would share this for those who are struggling with protein shakes because they are generally not very good. I know when I first tried the shakes all the flavors tasted the same. Well I had my surgery last Friday when I got out of surgery it hurt so bad I told my wife it was not worth it tell them to put my stomach back LMAO!!! I’m soooo excited! Tomorrow is the big day. I believe the pre op diet was the hardest part so far. For the individuals who are currently in the pre op diet phase stay focused!! I lost about 15 lbs since starting the pre op diet. I feel light and great. Another word of advice I can give is RELAX AND REST. [emoji173]️

5 days post surgery and I feel great but just full all the time. I am not getting my liquid or protein requirements in and I am scared to force myself when I fill so full. Any advice?

I finally did it. God brought me through this surgery without any complications. My doctor removed my gallbladder and repaired my hernia. I’m home now from the hospital. Only had to stay one night. All the staff and my doctor really took care of me. Now, that this is out of the way, the real journey begins...

its now been 4.5 years since I was sleeved. my high weight was 323 lbs. my goal weight was low 180's. I did reach goal weight but over the years I realized that my desired goal weight was too low for me. now for the last 2 years ive steadily maintained a weight in the mid 190's and that appears to be where im supposed to be and im happy with that weight. today 10/1/17 I weight 195 lbs. Hi I'm new to this group. I'm booked in to having the gastric sleeve on 26th Oct but am also getting my hiatus hernia repaired after years of constant pain. Has anyone else had this done at the same time? I've been seeing how everyone has coped with their pain after having the gastric sleeve but having the hernia repaired also is a longer op and has to re build the top of my stomach so I'm wondering how the pain will differ. I'm very excited to change my life and loose the weight with the gastric sleeve but nervous about the hernia repair. Cheers

I called united healthcare today (choice plus) and my policy doesn't include wls. The man on the phone gave me a few suggestions, call hr and see if they'll add it to my policy. (Not likely) His other suggestion was have my doctor write a letter of appeal suggesting why wls would benefit me/why I need it. He sounded super optimistic. I really thought the no would have devastated me, but it doesn't feel like the end for me. I believe in my gut that the surgery will get covered.

I'm scheduled for surgery on 11/7 and my job has scheduled a work trip for 12/6-12/8. Was wondering if anyone who has had the surgery could tell me if its crazy to plan travel a month after surgery? Or will I still be feeling pretty wonky?
