PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

Every time I feel like I'm getting somewhere I somehow am not, I get a call from my surgeons office last week saying his notes are not detailed enough for my insurance. I thought everything was cool because it had been submitted two weeks ago, been going at this process since February of this year. I had to wait till today as I'm writing this waiting in the waiting room because of course my doctor is only in the office twice a week. I woke up Sunday morning and just cried saying "I don't wanna be like this anymore" my husband comforted me and we prayed together. I still feel like this process is so long I'm starting to lose patience and hope like am I gonna finally get th…

I have been hearing so many good things about how good the Bone Broth tastes so I bought a ton of it and just had my first taste (chicken flavor, fat-free, gluten free) and it was NASTY!! In major panic mode being my surgery is tomorrow. Is there any broth out there that is liked by most or are my taste buds not like most everyone elses???

2 week liquid diet starts tomorrow, I feel sorry for my family. I know I won’t be a nice person. Surgery is November 7th at 7:30am. I’m getting scared and have thought about actually canceling it.... I won’t but I have that urge to.

Hi all, My surgery is 5 weeks away and I'm getting pretty nervous and I'm not sure why..... I've had a few major surgeries in the belly region, with big incisions and I did really good. I think the 2 things I'm most nervous about is the drug induced nap (me and anesthesia don't get along). I throw up every time and they give me way to much, based on my weight.....And getting all my water in..... I'm pretty sure I'll be asking for a nice cocktail of something to calm my nerves the day of..

I am scheduled for Tuesday October 17th or Bypass, tomorrow I have my last appointment with my surgeon... I am having second thoughts about Bypass.... I am now considering the sleeve..... my biggest fear is suffering dumping and not being able to tolerate Meats What is your biggest fear ??? I have never had an issue with over eating, my issues are being sedentary and that I love to try new foods and new tastes.... and I am afraid the bypass will take that from me....... I am 6 feet 1 inch and I weight 295 pounds Any thoughts?

Nervous. I was given my appointment to meet with the surgeon October 30 and then the dietitian the 31st. How long do I typically have to wait to even get the surgery? How long has everyone been waiting? I with kaiser.

Fortunately, since my BMI was under 50 I did not have to be on a pre-op diet. Today I have to be on clear liquids (which I can certainly handle vs. 2 weeks of it). Extremely excited for tomorrow but more nervous than I thought I'd be. This board has been an amazing place for comfort and information. Keep me in your prayers please

How are you all doing? I start my pre-op liquid diet on Monday. A little nervous but oh so ready. I actually pulled out my too-small clothes and hung them up in the closet. I had a mini food funeral with chocolate ice cream and Chinese takeaway. I'm gonna take before pics tonight. My bag is packed for the hospital. This Is Really Happening!!!! I love this bone broth. I do simmer it with some vegetables - onion, carrot, cabbage, celery, green pepper - and garlic. It has 7gr/cup/30cal as you can see on the label. I drank a lot of it yesterday and two shakes, some sf jello. Yay!! I survived!!! LOL Nine more days to go.

I’m on my 5th month of NUT visits and I seemed to have gained 4lbs and I’ve heard horror stories of people being denied by their insurance company for gaining weight during Pre-Op visits. I have BCBS NY and for the first 4 months I remained consistent during my weigh-ins and I don’t know where this weight came from. It could be stress since my surgery will be scheduled for Dec 2017... Has anyone gained weight during pre-op visits and was still approved? I’m freaking out and in need of answer!

My surgery is on November 13, and I am going a little stir crazy these last few weeks. I feel like time is slowing down and I'm just ready for it to get here already and it's making me agitated. Has anyone else experienced that? It's probably partially because I'm miserable at my job five days a week and I'm looking forward to the time off, too.

I am seriously about to have a breakdown. I went in to my pre-op appt and my doctor was reviewing my blood work and it shows that my potassium is high. He said we will need to re-test this the morning of surgery and I said well what does that mean, could it affect my surgery? And he said yes, if your numbers are still high we would cancel surgery that morning. And I'm like OMG!!! WHAT?????? And I said well what are the chances of it coming down by Tuesday (my surgery date) and he looked at the rest of my blood work and said that my kidney numbers are better than his so he thinks it is probably just an issue with how they drew my blood at the lab. I said I would li…

So happy completed my last weigh in today. I did the 6 month diet requirement for Aetna. I’m down 14 pounds since my first weigh in. NUT told me my information would be submitted to insurance today. Just hope Aetna can approve me fast so I can have my surgery before the new year. I have a very high deductible ☹️☹️[emoji20][emoji19]. Which I was able to meet this year from going to cardiologist, psych, pulmonologist, and visits with NUT. Please Aetna make this happen for me.

Attended my consult with NYU today! Everything was great! Everyone was great! Dr. Bedrosian was great! (Minus the # that popped up on the scale when I was weighed!) My surgical coordinator provided me with a checklist to complete in the months leading up to surgery to ensure I get approved by my insurance. She also provided me with a list of questions to ask my insurance (kind of odd - but she stated she would need me to do this because Cigna makes her wait too long). I call Cigna (through my husband’s employer) and the rep tells me she cannot provide me with the exclusions for bariatric surgery or weight loss management as the provider’s office will need to do this bu…

  43. My husband had his gastric sleeve surgery 3 1/2 years ago, and is now down to about 160lbs (lost almost 200.) In that time, I told myself I would lose weight too. I didn't -- I gained 20 more lbs instead. And frankly, it's getting ugly. My dad suddenly treats my husband like a human being, which is great if hypocritical. But now his disdain has transferred to me, and now I'm too fat for him. He makes comments about how my husband's gonna leave me if I don't lose weight, now that he's "skinny." My dad had the equivalent of the sleeve --he had an ulcer in the 80s, had 2/3 of his stomach cut out, and got skinny as a result. Now that he's retired and not doing manual labor, t…

My surgery is at 7:30 am on Tuesday, October 17th. I have been on a liquid diet since Friday and have been miserable since. I can have sf jello, sf popsicles, sf powerade, broth and water- I drink approximately 80+ oz/day. I have been getting dizzy throughout the day and it makes work almost unbearable. Should I get a low fat greek yogurt or something of substance?? I feel like I'm going to pass out at times.

It occurred to me today (my liquid aka fasting diet begins tomorrow) that there is a lot of research done on fasting. Granted, this isn't a true fast as I will be taking in protein daily but the rest (for me) is going to be water. During a fast your body uses its glucose reserves within 24 hours. After that, your body will use only 4% protein and 96% lipids (fat) for energy. Fasting has TONS of benefits but must be done under medical supervision. It can help with allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma and hypertension. The biggest finding is that fasting prior to chemotherapy dramatically decreases the side effects. There is an EXCELLENT documentary called "The Science o…

I was at a range recently, and getting closer to the surgery time period, it dawned on to me that my muscle memory might change. I am not s professional, just a hobbyist, but I do want I can to develop muscle memory so if I ever need to rely on it under pressure, it's in my corner. Can post-op make subtle changes to posture, stance, grip, reflexes? I go to the range to get better, and correct squeezing to hard at the trigger break. And it dawned on me, with a total body composure change over a year and more that it could change how I shoot. Not so worried about a holster draw, but with a much smaller waist, I know I will have to relearn it. If it will have an impact, …
