LAP-BAND support. Fills, the band diet, complications, band removal, and revision to sleeve or bypass.

  1. Started by TryingDawn,

I had a lap-band put in years ago by a *** in the San Fran area (Burlingame). I complained from day one that it didn't seem to work and later that it hurt. Most of the time they just advised it was fine, normal, but they did two UGI and still advised me it was fine. When they put in any fill I could not swallow and of course it never limited my eating. After ten years I finally changed medical plans and went to a new doctor. They found that the lap-band was placed way too high and if filled water/food stopped in my esophagus, and recommended fixing it. I asked to have it removed. After a few issues with not being able to throw up because of the band with a flu and …

Hi everyone! I am having surgery on Feb 23 and I have decided that only my parents and my husband will know. I had previously booked a trip to Florida with friends that is now 3 weeks post open. Is there any way I could get the earing changes by them? Any ideas on what I could blame a special diet on? I live my friend but she and her husband have never struggled with their weight and will just never understand! 5. I got my band 5/25/02 by Dr Kuri at 30 years old. I'm about to turn 42 and I had my band removed today after finding out that it was causing my A-Fib (atrial fibrillation). A-Fib is a type of heart palpitation problem. A fellow bandster told me that when her band slipped, she started getting heart palpitations. Her cardiac and lapband doctor told her that once her band was fixed, her heart beat would return to normal. And sure enough, after surgery it was perfect again! So that's what prompted me to make the correlation that my lapband may be causing my problem too. After bringing it to the attention of my doctors, both my cardiac and lapband doctor think the A-Fib…

*I posted this in beginners but think this is the correct forum? Unsure* First of all, SO glad to have found this site. I had my gastric band op 10 days ago. The first week was excruciating in terms of trapped air, nausea, post op pain but now recovering well. I am currently on a liquid diet - concerned as I am supposed consuming liquid like soup, protein shakes, milk etc but have only been consuming water and tea. The first few days I had some yoghurt and soup but developed a repulsion i.e nausea to anything milk based. Prior to the op I purchased an lot of high protein milk based shakes just for this phase but have touched a single one. - Should I be worried? Especiall…

Have any of you had or know of anyone who has had a band placed over their sleeve? I was banded in 03 and slipped over the past few years. I had it removed and was sleeved in '16 and haven't lost a single pound. I have read about placing a band over the sleeve and am curious to hear from those who've had this procedure.

Hi, I am 8 years out from initial surgery. 2 years ago I had my band emptied as I got very ill. I had developed an aspiration pneumonia. It was a terrifying experience and everybody including my pulmonoligist and oncologist thought it was lung cancer. The CT scan done in the ER Showed my lungs full of ground glass masses (not entirely sure of term). Thankfully a young resident put two and two together and we figured out it was the band causing this. I had been coughing and vomiting at night and gone to the ER twice already thinking it was an asthma attack. Long story short the band was emptied an has been sitting idle. Have since changed my lifestyle and am fit a…

I have had my band for quite a while and have had issues in the past couple of years with it being too tight or not tight enough. Was even hospitalized with dehydration due to inflammation after taking NSAIDs for an injury. My port is extremely hard to access. So in the past year I have not been in the “sweet spot”. Not a lot of restriction, but not feeling like an empty pit where I am hungry all of the time. I felt it was better to just leave it alone. In the past 5 days I have had a sinus infection and my band is extremely tight. I am hardly able to get any liquids down. I have tried hot coffee and it came back up. I am now drinking soda, which, btw, I hav…

Hi, I am a newbie to Lap Band...I had my surgery 9 days ago but I am a little discouraged that with the Gastric Bypass I didn't want to eat and didn't feel hungry but with the Lap Band I feel a little hungry. I did really well with the Gastric Bypass for 6 years but slowly started eating a little more each day until I gained quite a bit of weight back... My question is ...is it normal to feel hungry already..I am on the mushy food week...

Well after 7 years, I got my band removed. At first everything was fine! Lost over 80 lbs, got myself to the gym regularly. As soon as the band was "overfilled" that was the beginning of the end. For about 5 years, I was getting it filled, then unfilled. I could barely keep any food down. Eventually I had enough fluid removed so that I could finally eat, and then the weight started to creep back up. I got the band removed and am relieved. But..... Is it naive of me to think I can NOW lose weight, now that the band has been removed? I'm in the process of getting approved for a revision to the sleeve, but a part of me doesn't want ANY type of weight loss surgery. Can w…

  22. Hi I just got my new fill 7 days ago to 6.5. I couldn't even eat a hotdog. I can't even eat noodles without it getting stuck and throwing up. It takes me 5 minutes to get it unstuck by coughing it up. Water goes down fine and I am less hungry. Uncooked veggies like cucumbers don't go down easy either. All I can have is porridge and chicken and fish. Beef gets stuck easily. When it gets stuck i lose my appetite. Just want to know if band gets easier or if I should loosen it by .05 cc to 6cc. I'm afraid of esophagous erosion and reflux which I don't have. I can stay at this level just have to chew all food forever to make sure it goes down easy. Did this sound li…

Hey there! I had VSG done on 3/21/2017. I have lost just over 100 lbs since surgery which is 80% of my total weight loss goal. Just curious if that seems normal or high for how far out I am.. So I have been banded for over 3 years now. I did well getting the weight off, with portion control, chewing, etc. It was easy with my band as a tool. I maintained my weight loss for over a year and then just started gaining weight. I've had quite a few stuck episodes something I never really had a lot of and I am always too full. It's like I eat and then all of a sudden I feel absolutely horrible because I ate too much or the wrong thing. Where or how do I start over. I haven't gained all the weight back but I know I have 15 lbs that has to go! I'm devastated and way too full.

I started at 296 lbs (301 at my highest) and as of 2 days ago I was at 278. Im not as interested in the numbers as I am in the “look” (finally being able to wear clothes and feel sexy again) and lifestyle change.

How much do they normally remove and will they put it all back in at one time when I return? I don't want to have slowly build back up to where I am. I am probably one fill away from being green.

I have been hearing lately that long term studies are now showing that for most people lap banding fails to help them lose weight and to keep it off. Is that true? I lost a significant amount of weight right after my surgery but over the last few years I have gained it all back. I see no reason to consider the sleeve procedure because I believe the results would be the same.

  37. Wondering if anyone has ever dealt with abdominal spasms from your port to your midline. I got my hand in 06. In 11, I was training for a half marathon....after the race, I started having these seriously major muscle spasms at my port. It continues to today. I have to be very careful how I use my abs...movrment the wrong way will set it off. Even sitting up to get out of bed or sitting in a chair....i was at a dinner party and had to excuse myself 6 times during the course of dinner because sitting in the chair set it off....i can't take this anymore! I this enough of a health risk to get this thing out of me and have insurance pay for it?

  44. Hello, My name is Courtney Hernandez, and I am a physician assistant currently practicing in Monroe, LA, at Premier Urgent Care & Bariatric Services. I have been performing lap band adjustments on patients since October, 2011. Our office uses fluoroscopy on every patient, which allows me the luxury of being able to directly visualize the port, so that there is no "guessing game" when it is time to access it, to either inject Fluid into or withdraw fluid from the band system. We also utilize the fluoroscopy machine, along with a barium swallow, on every patient, so that the position of the band can be determined, along with the size of the gastric pouch, and th…

Now seven years later I've still managed to keep off over 100 pounds with only one fill and zero follow ups with my surgeon who is now retired. Over the years I did have times where I would be really sick with heartburn and unable to keep foods down. Yesterday (Aug. 15, 2017) I visited a new surgeon in my area for a general consultation and adjustment since I haven't been losing weight. Hi all. Just had surgery September 14. Going good. Being that I am 9 days out and still on full liquids for yet another week....just curious how others are doing at this stage. 1) How much weight have you lost since surgery? I've lost 9lbs in the first 9 days. That's pretty good to me! 2) What diet stage are you at? I'm on full liquids (or liquids, cream based soups and mushy foods as I like to call it). 3) Did anyone have hiatal hernia repair with theirs?
