Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums

Gastric sleeve (VSG) support. Ask about the procedure, the sleeve diet, weight loss results, recovery, and complications.

  1. Started by AllyJonesVSG,

I have been in the "obese" category for so many years and I just realized that in only one more pound I'll be officially down to "overweight" - which may not seem like much of a victory, but sure feels like one to me. I'm wearing another pair of my college kid's jeans today - size 14! - because I don't fit any of mine (again). And I feel SOOO healthy. So glad I did this. I'm GREAT at losing weight, but horrible at keeping it off, so this? This is wonderful.

So I am two weeks and one day postop and down 28 lbs from gastric sleeve surgery. As of today my diet consists of soft refried beans, scrambled egg with cheese, yogurt, protein drinks, and soup. The doctor allowed me to have flaky fish today. I have stalled though the last two days. I’m getting my fluid intake between 58-64 ounces. I seem to be eating between 1/2-2/3 cup at a meal. Not Drinking is the toughest during a meal. does that sound about norm?

  3. Hello everyone, I am new here and made this account just to ask this question. I'm on day 5 of my pre-op liquid diet and yesterday and today have been in *intense* pain. Muscle pain all over my body, but especially in my legs, that is just intense sustained pain. They feel like they're on fire. Pain to the point that at times (for as long as an hour+) I'm writhing in a ball and sobbing and screaming and my husband has no idea what to do. Sustained pain of an intensity that I haven't felt since I broke my upper arm years ago. Did this happen to anyone else? Is there a way to fix it? I'm losing my mind here and can't deal with this kind of ongoing pain!…

My Niece and her fiance announced their engagement a year ago this month. At the time, I had only been to one diet visit with the clinic I went to for surgery and I was still debating if I wanted to have the procedure done. A month after their announcement, she asked me to be her maid of honor. But inside I was already dreading it. At that time, I had maybe 2 outfits that fit correctly and was always uncomfortable. I knew I was going to have a struggle trying to find a dress that fit and that I could afford. I was already thinking of how fat I was going to look in the pictures....I felt like I would ruin them. I never said it out loud, but I was certain she would regret …

I was one of the unlucky few that developed a leak. They are life threatening! I want to tell my story to be a resource for anyone who has this type of complication. My surgery date was 5/1/18. Non- smoker, good health, surgery went smooth. 3-4 weeks post surgery, something was definitely off. I had rigor, trouble regulating my body temp, foul smelling burps. I called my surgeon's office daily that Memorial week. I took myself to the ER thinking I was dehydrated. They ran a CBC and my WBC count was 30,000. They sent me home to follow up with my surgeon. Next day, took results in and according to the nurse, my surgeon wasn't concerned. Next day 6/2, had trouble urinating a…

  6. I am looking for recommendations for a local Doc in Utah. I had surgery in Mexico about a year ago. I have lost all my weight but I am just not feeling well. Low engery, vertigo and headaches. I have had a hard time finding a GP who understands how this surgery may affect me. I have no idea if how I'm feeling is related to the surgery or not but feel like its important to have doc who understands how it may affect me. Any suggestions for a doctor you love?

I was sleeved on 8-21-2018 and the first two weeks were amazing I felt great and lost 26 pobuds. About 2.5 weeks in I was overcome with nausea and vomiting. I’ve tried anti-nausea meds like zofran which don’t seem to help. I take promethazine at night which seems to help but only because it knocks me out for hours at a time. Has anybody else experienced this and if so what did you do to help? I’m barely able to get water down at this point I need to do something.

I had my gastric sleeve done one June first, tbh I do not exercise much but I am down 85 pounds. I have noticed an incredible hair loss and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what to do? I am in Costa Rica so natural ingredients are always preferred. Any exercise to burn fat and tighten muscle would be appreciated

Had sleeve Jan 2018 and down 80lbs (315 now 235). I follow the rules about eating and drinking and no carbonation but have eaten what I want just a lot less. Haven’t gained but haven’t lost in the last month. I know I need to get back on Tracy but feeling on lost on where to begin. Do I go to liquid or straight protein? How do I “reset”. I’m ready to do this. Stuck in the middle of hurricane Flo so plenty of time to reflect and get myself in order. I’m ready to do this... again Any help and encouragement is appreciated. Thanks!

How much do you chew? I looked though my notebook and my guidelines say 20-30 after the first 2 weeks. In the "nutrition for life" section, there is no mention. Do you count your chews? Sometimes, I find that I forget to chew as much as I probably should. I'm just curious about what other people are experiencing.

Hi all, This group is pretty buried within the forums, so I can see how I missed it until now (and I can also see why it's pretty inactive). I would have really liked to read a story like mine from someone else while I was researching the sleeve surgery. So, here's my story and I hope it helps someone. I would love to hear from anyone and try to pump some life into this forum! I'm a newbie, just 12 days post-op, so I am still learning everyday and ask the veterans dumb questions all the time. But I still think my experience just coming to terms with knowing the sleeve was for me might help another low BMIer in a similar situation. I'm 31 years old, 5'6" and starte…

  15. I am 10 days post op and I am a stomach/side sleeper. All night I was tossing and turning because of a pain I was experiencing on my left side under my rib cage. It hurts more when I take a deep breath and I'm just wondering how common this might be and does it eventually go away? I've read elsewhere that it might be scar tissue forming. The pain is directly above one of my incisions. I was already at the hospital yesterday for a CT scan and nothing was found. This was because I had shoulder pain. This pain right under my rib cage is something new.

  17. Today marks one year since I have been sleeved. It was quite the journey. [emoji173]️ SW: 316 CW: 172.3 (I weigh myself weekly because I've been eating too many damn carbs lately. Sorry I'm not perfect and idc if you judge me!) Measurements: 32-27-40 No plastic surgery has been done YET lol! Went out to eat with my mother today as she was the only one who stuck by my side with this surgery, my only support. I couldn't love and thank her enough.

Hi...I’m almost 3 weeks post op, sleeved on 8/29/18 and feeling great. Before surgery I never really burped/belched, It happens when I am full from eating a meal, I’m glad that I have that sign to let me know, but I feel the restriction as well. My Team advanced me to the soft stage by the way...Just curious if this is going to be a part of the new normal for me? Lol ? Even with the burping this is by far the best decision ever!!

I am almost two weeks post-op and today the mental hunger has really gotten to me. I started a pre-op liquid diet for two weeks and am on a liquid diet for six weeks after surgery. While I know that I can not physically tolerate any type of food, it doesn’t stop me from remembering the taste or wanting a bite. I have four kids (15 to 7) and a husband that I have to cook for. I will say my husband has stepped up to cooking and been very understanding, but I still help out. I am proud to say I haven’t cheated pre- or post-op and usually leave while they eat dinner. Does it get any better? What are some things that you do to overcome mental hunger?

Wondering who really struggled with nausea vomiting or heartburn right after sleeve surgery. I am really having a hard time keeping anything down. Yes, I am following all the instructions, no I’m not consuming too much. I take 2 sips of water and then have a burning sensation rise in my throat that then makes me drool and I only find temporary relief if I am able to burp or vomit. Is this part of the process? I have tried OTC solutions such as gaviscon, emetrol, gas x.

I am going to disney for the second time with my boyfriend of 5 years and 18 of his family members. We take a vacation every year and i am the only one not blood related or married into the family. My surgery is scheduled for november 5th pending insurance approval... will i be able to do Disney cruise for 3 nights and then to Disney for 3 days mid March, without slowing anyone down, or being sick, or not able to do certain things? I cant be the only non blood relative and be a burden or a pain. Its causing me a lot of anxiety about the surgery.

As I child I was raised to clean my plate and not to waste food (because there were starving kids in Africa...) As an adult, I have always felt it was a waste of my hard earned money to waste food. My surgery is November 5th. I don't think food that has been frozen tastes very good. Other than taking smaller portions, how have you changed your mindset about not having to clean your plate? Looking for tips or advice. Thank you!

Even though it is ingrained in our brain that carbonation is the devil, I tailgated today with some friends and had a diet coke and some Jack Daniels. I poured a little bit of the soda in a cup to sip to see if there were any adverse effects, I didn't have any. I nursed that drink over the course of an hour and was ok, nothing happened. I almost feel guilty for doing it. I am about six months post of and one pound away from my personal goal. I kind of am still scared of food but I am trying to overcome that.

  27. Started by Rosie T,

Well I’m nearly 24 hours post op and thought I’d update for folks whose surgery is coming up and are curious what the experience has been like for me so far. I have three different IV sites. But one got pulled. A Foley catheter, SCDs and had oxygen on until this morning. I have a JP drain on my left side that is definitely the most painful part for me. Yesterday the pain was much more than I anticipated. It has improved some today but I can’t wait til the drain comes out. The liquid pain medication is pretty rough to handle. But zofran helps. Did my leak test and awaiting results. Enjoying ice Chips with no problem.

So I'm confused on the liquid diet, my paper work says I can puree canned soup, can I make my own soup and puree it? I know every doctor is different but I don't want to screw this up...and like everyone have an easy recovery after surgery. HELP... I need drink ideas for pre op! I grow bored of the drink mixes quick, would like to hear about your more savory options. I'm not much for sweets.

I was sleeved in Jan 2018 and I have lost 80 lbs (315 now 236). I have not been following the program like I should have for about 2 months I never drink and eat and I never have carbonation but I do eat what I want, just far less than I used to. I would really like to get the ball rolling again. Just curious if damage could have been done on stretching stomach or if that is something that takes years not months. I have not gained wait but been at a stall for about a month. Any help or encouragement would be helpful. We are in the middle of hurricane flo so I’ve had plenty of down time to assess my situation

  30. Just looking for anyone having surgery on the 14th of July in Mexico. I am going by myself and looking for a friend, lol.

  31. Started by KCgirl061,

I can’t help but feel incredibly blessed with this surgery. I’m 6 weeks post op and have lost 18 pounds since my procedure. . My BMI was at the low end and it’s right around what I should have lost according to that chart that’s popular here and other WLS sites. Ican fit comfortably in every single item of clothing I own! I’m not feeling too much restriction and haven’t thrown up yet. But my surgeon does have me on a very conservative diet progression and I’m just now starting puréeds. Hopefully my streak of not vomiting will continue.

I am not sure if I am explaining it correctly but has anyone experienced a diaper rash or jock itch? After surgery? I spent 2 days in the hospital and when I got home I noticed a burning in between my thighs and round my buttocks area. I put some aquaphora on it and it is not burning anymore I just wondering if other ppl had this or should I worry. I have a follow on Wednesday.

  34. Hi All- I have been cleared to start 3A of my post-op diet. Essentially its shakes, SF jello and now cottage cheese and refried beans. I seem to have pain after every bite. It only lasts about 3-5 seconds, but it is as the food hits the stomach. How long has this sensation lasted for some of the veterans? It's not fun, but I am grateful to have at least some food. Any feedback/insights are appreciated!

3.5 weeks post surgery. Went to our state fair tonight and was really sad that I couldn't eat any of the food I love having at fairs. I really wanted a corn dog, and cotton candy, and funnel cake, and alcohol, and, and, and.... We didn't stay long because I was sad plus I still haven't returned to full energy levels since the surgery. Just feeling down and wanted to share.

Post op/op details. Still in hospital. Leak test scheduled for the AM. Gas pain and pressure is no joke! The feeling of needing to burp but not being able To is annoying. Have walked some and peed some. More details re: intake and actual day of to come. Thanks everyone for your support! I’ll post every retrying on this thread for myself and others. Nothing has been a major surprise thus far due to the generosity of those willing to share on these forums. Dry lips, dry mouth, swollen throat. On social media, I see entire Instagram accounts dedicated to people's personal journeys of getting sleeved. I see so many that this *feels* like the norm. But I am curious to know...do any of you NOT tell a lot of people about your surgery? I am not ashamed to be getting sleeved, but for whatever reason I do feel very private about it. It feels like this deeply personal medical decision that I don't want to involve more people in than is necessary. I am not inclined to tell more people than I absolutely have to, at least until I have actually had the surgery. I am working through so many of my own fears and anxieties that I feel like I don't have emotional bandwidth to t…

Has anyone in the last year gone through the bariatric program for vsg at the Naval Medical Center San Diego? I am thinking about doing a self-referral. I want to know how your process went. How long did it take from start to finish. If you have Tricare Standard PLEASE tell me about your experience. If I decide to go through this bariatric program I will be traveling from Northern Arizona so I want to make sure that the long haul will be worth it all. Did you have to do a medical supervised diet/weigh in? If so, for how long? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I started feeling hungry about 5 days post surgery and even though I stuck to my diet, still sticking to it, the weight loss is slow and now non-existent. I'm terrified that I won't lose anymore weight it's really stressing me out and this hunger thing is awful. I am taking in my water and protein so I'm wondering what's happening?!? Any advice? Hello all! I am considering VSG - but I have heard rumors of worsening acid reflux. My reflux is well managed by a PPI now, I have break through from time to time if I eat certain things. AND when I have lost weight in the past, my acid reflux has gotten better - I was off of a PPI for awhile. I am concerned about vitamin deficiencies associated with the other surgeries, so I think VSG is the best option for me - but this issue has me concerned. Does anyone know the incidence of reflux post VSG? Or can anyone give me any data? Or any insight into this issue? Thanks!
