PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

Well i got up and took my shower with the soap they gave me and my wife and i was at st.francis hospital at 5:30 am!! We went to the 3rd floor to check in and the lady could not find my name on the list so she checked in the surgeons file and found where my surgery had been cancelled because my live enzymes were very high So now i have to go to another GI doctor and get clearance then reschedule im so disappointed i just want to die!!!!!!

If my doctor's office left a vmail with the amount of my copay does that mean they finally sent it to insurance?

I began my pre-op liquid diet on November 26, 2018. I am scheduled for surgery on 12/12/18. I knew that I would lose weight during the pre-op stage, but I didn't know it would be such a mind screw. The liquid diet can result in rapid weight loss, and when you begin to see the pounds fall off, you may begin to rethink having surgery. (Well at least this thought did cross my mind). You begin to think, "Wow, I have lost, so many pounds already, maybe I don't need to go through with the surgery." "Maybe I can just stick to a diet plan and keep losing the weight." But just as this thought went through my mind, the parallel thought of, "if you could just watch your d…

So I've been chugging on through these pre-op diet days. I'm in day 7 and all of a sudden, I feel emotional. Sad, anxious. I think it may be a bit of PMS but I also imagine it has something to do with change in diet. Believe me, I'm motivated with my eyes on the prize, RNY scheduled for 11/28. But this sad feeling came from nowhere. Anyone else deal with some emotions during the pre-op diet phase?

  6. Started by Ed_NW,

I started the process back in April of this year (I think) and I don't even meet the surgeon to discuss what surgery I will be getting until Dec 4th. It's really frustrating when you see other people moving along at a quick pace and I'm stuck in the pre-op diet mode. This just seems like another diet that I'm tired of being on already. This is why I fail at diets. I've lost a lot of weight up to this point but now that I've reached the weight that I'm required to be at for surgery, I've stopped tracking what I eat. I just half heatedly follow a Keto diet and hope it stays off util my appointment on the 4th of next month. Who knows when the actual surgery will be schedule…

Hi! I’m new here and in the process of getting ready for gastric bypass. What is everyone’s favorite protein powder? There are so many to choose from I don’t know where to start.

I have heard GasX makes strips. I have been looking all over for them. I heard they are better than dealing with the pills. Does anyone know where these can be found in the Atlanta, Ga. area?

  9. Started by AngelaM258,

Damn it. Just had my pre-op EGD. They found 2 ulcers and duodenitis. Total shock as I have zero symptoms, never had reflux, etc. Treating with 12 weeks of Protonix then repeat EGD. She cleared me for surgery in 4-6 weeks. I had been on target for surgery mid-December but now I’m wondering if they will postpone me until it’s verified as treated. Has anyone else had the sleeve with evidence of ulcers on the EGD?

Hi, my name is Leigh Anne and I’m in the beginning stages of researching bariatric surgery. My husband is retired military so we have Tricare prime. I’ve seen the requirements for surgery and I do qualify according to those, however, I’m unsure how to prove my failed weight loss attempts? Maybe I’m overthinking. Also, the nearest base is about 45 minutes from here, would I be required to have my surgery on base or could I use a network surgeon (if I can find one)? I appreciate any input and advice you may have for me.

Hi, I got a call that the bariatric office has received my approval from insurance. How long did it take ya'll to get a call from the scheduler to choose a date?

  13. I’m a female military veteran who has been struggling with obesity for 10+ years. Over a year ago, i began seeing a weight management doctor through the vA. I started making healthier eating decisions with the help of my doctor and attending nutrition classes. I even began seeing a physical trainer through the VA. I still wasn’t losing weight. I was 211 lbs at just 5’0”. I finally decided that I wanted to consider weight loss surgery. I was given a checklist, which I completed over the span of 10 months. All that was left for my surgery was my psych evaluation. I even exceeded the weight I was supposed to lose to meet the pre-op requirement. I’m down to 190 lbs. I’m still…

  15. Hi Everyone, I started my liquid preop diet four days ago. I'm very upset because I've been following the diet very strictly. Since yesterday I've been experiencing horrible constipation pain and this morning I check my scale and I gained 2 pounds. How is that even possible. My surgury is next thursday and I need to lose weight to shrink my liver. I'm so discourage. Has anyone experience constipation with the liquid preop diet and gaining weight? Any advice is truly welcomed. Thank you. ?

Hello everyone, I am new here and wanted to mention that I am scheduled for a consultation appointment regarding weight loss surgery next month. I have been thinking about this non-stop for several days, going from yes I want to get it if approved to no I rather try again to lose weight on my own. Seems that U am gravitating to the gastric sleeve surgery over the other types. Somethings I have learned online have bothered me, not so much with the surgery itself but what may eventually come after. I am particularly worried about having excess skin and the possibility of regaining weight back after losing it, along with nausea and vomiting. Or even reaching a plateau of wei…

Hi guys, I called this morning and made an appointment to speak with my PCP about bariatric surgery. I've done my research, have a list of all of the things I've tried to lose weight in the past, and spoke with my Mom to discuss our family medical history. Is there anything I'm missing? What kind of questions should I ask her? Thanks in advance, Leigh Anne

Good morning so I just started my liquid diet today I don’t get my nutrition class until tomorrow. These shakes are sickening sweet. Does anyone have any tips or just power through it?

  21. Started by jenngraham9,

I started today on the liquid diet and for 2 weeks (my surgery is 2 weeks from today), I can only have 3 protein shakes, jello, broth, sugar free Popsicle, every day for 14 days. Why do some surgeons let you have food? Mine is really strict with NO FOOD, only liquids. Hope I can do this!!!!!

I hate, hate, hate this time of year! I generally only get sick a couple times of year, but it's usually at the start and end of the year. Office workers fail to practice proper hygiene and if they HAVE to come into work, they're not mindful of the fact that they can spread germs! I'm feeling a little under the weather and a little scratch in my throat that could be delegated to allergies or illness. Honestly, I'd rather get sick now so I have time to recover. I just do NOT want to be sick around December 12, which is my surgery date! Ugh!

Just started my 2 week liquid pre-op diet and today was hard but I know that as I get through this weekend it will be a lot easier. When I get to go back to work I will be busy and have less head hunger (Or at least that is what I am hoping for LOL). I know I can do this as I am a rule follower especially when I know I have to answer for myself like I will when surgery day rolls around. I am wrapping my head around the changes more and more as I can as I know this is not a temporary change and I look forward to this awesome tool that I get to use. Just trying to write some things out to keep myself accountable and motivated. I know after will suck big time but I figure it…

Ok, this is going to sound gross but I’ve been on my liquid diet almost 2 weeks now and I’m having major constipation right now. I have taken stool softeners and did an enema. When i go to push, the hard piece is stuck and liquid just comes out around it. So nasty I know! I’ve even resorted to digging pieces out myself and still nothing. Now I’m in pain and crying. I can’t pee because the pain of pushing hurts my butt. Does anyone have a recommendation or should I just call the doctor?

  31. Hi all, I'm booked for gastric sleeve surgery on Wednesday 5 December and started the pre-op diet (Optifast is the product we use in NZ) 4 days ago. Almost immediately I was hit with terrible gas from the shakes, which gets worse as the day goes on and I drink more of them - I have 3 per day total - ending at night time with explosive, painful diarrhoea for a couple of hours. I can't call my clinic until Monday but I'm not sure what to do: carry on or give my tum a break? If I don't have any shakes tomorrow how will I impact on my liver shrinking? I'm funding this surgery myself and don't want to muck it up but I can't really go on like this [emoji22] Any thoughts, exper…

Hi all, I'm having VGS on 12/17/18 and have started the pre-op diet. I'm really struggling because I just don't like many vegetables. I can have 2 slim fast shakes, 2 premier protein drinks, 1 jello or popsicle, and 1 lean and green meal (3oz chicken or turkey and 1 cup cooked or 2 cups raw veggies). Does anyone have any suggestions for the lean and green meal? This is making me not want to eat at all! As far as veggies, I'm open to trying new things in new ways but, really have just been eating lettuce and cucumbers.

Hello all! I am scheduled for RNY gastric bypass surgery on 12/3 with St. Luke’s Allentown, PA. I am both excited and frightened to death! I’ve been pretty good on my pre-surgery diet consuming between 1,000-2,000 calories per day and doing my 10,000 steps a day. Any post op RNY’ers here that can tell me what to expect going forward? I am kinda scared of the pain immediately after surgery and any pain going forward. Anyone care to share their experiences? The good? The bad? Also, forum open to anyone else getting surgery in December!! I am new here so sorry if there is any previous threads covering this.

I started my full liquid diet 2 days ago(even though I needed only 5 days I'm doing the dull week). My surgery is scheduled for the 27th this month. Any tips from those that have already gone though it? I am getting the worst headaches.

  36. Hi everyone, I am scheduled for VSG on December 26th. Last week I went to do my upper GI with contrast. The nasty barium swallow. Well apparently in my report they found some abnormalities of my esophagus and some reflux. My surgeon said in my report that usually the liquid just goes down, but with me it shot up almost to my clavicles and then back down. I don’t notice this at all while I’m eating or drinking. As a result my doctor wants me to do an endoscopy and a motility test to check the function of my esophagus and how I swallow. He said depending on the results he could switch me to the bypass. I really do not want to do the bypass due to malabsorption, dumpi…

Hi All, I am new here and schedule for sleeve surgery on 11/26 (next Monday) in in the US. I have to admit, I am getting a bit scared, nervous and doing some back peddling. I haven't been big on drinking water and to be honest I have always had dry skin even when I do drink 64+ ounces a day. I am really worried about being able to drink those 64+ after surgery and becoming severely dehydrated. How do you vets do it? Also, how bad is the skin after... really? I have seen some pretty scary photos online and I think it is freaking me out a bit. Like, what is worse depression from having really bad hanging skin, or being overweight. I know I am probably just freaking ou…

For the most part, you will have a hungry feeling again, even after your surgery. That is a common misconception that people seem to have; people think they because they've had surgery, they won't be hungry again. Know that you probably will. Sometimes it may be head hunger, but sometimes it's actual hunger. I didn't experience it right after surgery, but I did experience hunger a couple of months post op. Just an FYI

Hi everyone ☺️ so hopefully my sleeve surgery will be in December and I would like to purchase everything I need in advance for surgery. Im a little stuck on the protein part I really don’t enjoy the taste of protein shakes and powders etc. so can anyone recommend the best one or one they found that works for them? Thank you ?

  40. Good Morning! I just had my first appointment with the bariatric center last week. I met with the surgeon, a nutritionist, and had blood drawn. All of my blood results came back great (I’m the healthiest fat person I know! Lol). Next up is the psych evaluation. I am curious how that went for others and what should I expect? I have a questionnaire to complete but they did say the appointment will be at least 2 hours so what was discussed at your psych evaluation and anything I should know? Also any general advise for a newbie that is hoping for surgery early next year? Thanks in advance!

Went for pre surgery testing on November 6th and surgery is scheduled for November 21st and no one from hospital has yet to reach out to me to say what I will need to pay before surgery. I have 2 different insurances one deductible is 2,900 and one is $750. At the pre surgery testing they did have me sit down with registeration but she just verified my insurance and employment. I am just about a week out and nervous about a surprise from the hospital after reading other people’s post. Should I reach out to the hospital? I wouldn’t even know where to start. Anyone like to share their experiences

I went to the Start Clinic today to do my final pre-op stuff before surgery next week and they tested me for a urinary tract infection, saying they don't do surgery if you have one. Well, turns out I have one... but my surgeon sent me a note saying "it's not of immediate concern" and we will discuss it at my next appointment... which is next week, the day before my surgery. they didn't give me any antibiotics for it, either. do they give you antibiotics after surgery? is that why they are holding off, maybe, because whatever they'll give me will help the UTI, too? a little concerned... surgery next Thursday.
