PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by E-girl,

Getting ready to go. I had second thoughts but I am ok now. Wish me luck friends!

  2. So I was reading an post yesterday and now I am having serious second thoughts. I may not even show up tomorrow to surgery. The post was about Reactive Hypoglycemia, a side effect to bypass that can develop 2 the 10 years post bypass. In the post, the patient had symptoms 1 to 2 times a year at first and now is having them 2 to 5 times a week. Patient occasionally passes out because of it. When I had my sleeve six years ago I had experienced those symptoms and I just thought it was because I forgot to eat. It was a weird feeling of dizziness, confusion, and I was with a client at the time and I nearly passed out. It scared the crap out of me. I started doing …

I was waffling a couple of months ago about whether I was making the right choice to pursue VSG. I decided to get honest with myself about the things I had been putting off/avoiding because of my weight (and therefore things I might do after VSG). I started the list and it went on and on and on.... - fit into a wet suit and go scuba diving - be in the picture with my kids - promote my business - flirt Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc. for pages... :( I still cry every time I think of another thing to add to the list. But, I do get excited by the thought that someday, hopefully soon, that list will shrink! What have you been putting off and what will you be excited to do …

I began my weight loss journey 1 year ago. It started because my amazing sister was preparing for gastric bypass surgery and she inspired me to be healthier as well. She lost over 100 pounds from pre-op to post op. Her surgery was around February of this year. I started with premier protein shakes once a day during my lunch period at work instead of eating. My sister was my biggest inspiration to remain strong. I am a mother and a wife and I have a full time job 40+ hour per week job. For the first 6 months I did one shake a day. For the last 6 months I've done 2 premier protein shakes per day and dinner at night and eating regularly on weekends. My pre op …

  6. Well the day has arrived , a day I feared would happen. it is now ONLY A FEW DAYS UNTIL MY SURGERY. Now I wonder, am I truly ready? I have packed, repackaged everything. least twice, I have gone back and re-read all the other postings for five, years. Slacks- 1,2, or3 pair? socks- shoud,i take any soft, ones or just b wear the non skid they provide in bed ? I know the hospitals keep those, rooms cold. Should I pack a bed. jacket, sweater. or carry a mictongiber or knitted poncho to,keep my shoulders warm? Charger for my cell phone, is a 6 foot cord long enough or should I check Staples or Wal-Mart for, longer ones.? Make sure if I am going to work with what I ha…

I have two weeks to go until surgery - I was doing great on the pre-op diet but today, completely without a second thought I ate a piece of apple bake bread a co-worker brought in. I'm feeling like a failure, and feel frustrated from not feeling well from the protein shakes (struggling getting my Lactaid dose correct!) Anyway - I needed to confess to someone, back on the horse, right?

Hey guys, I finally got my surgery date (September 4th) and I am wondering where I should start. Looking for ideas on what to bring to the hospital. Things that I should purchase before the surgery. What things I should have on hand before the surgery? Stuff like that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am day 2 in liquid diet pre-op and having second thoughts. I know it's just food addiction and fear of surgery talking but I am determined to continue on. Did anyone else have this issue? What did you do to change thought pattern? Is this surgery (sleeve) worth it?

***Sharing a recent surgery experience*** I had my gastric bypass surgery about 1 week ago and so wanted to share some of my experiences with you. I know before I went in, I was nervous, excited, anxious and would have loved to hear about someone one else’s experience – so I am sharing mine. For what it’s worth. <3 I tried to break it down into sections so you can scan and read what you want. For anyone that did body shots. What all did you focus on capturing. I am thinking of taking one say in a favorite outfit that I wear now and then some in bra and panties. Capture both. Then in a few months take photos in the same outfit to see the changes.

So, today i started my 2 week pre op diet. This week 3 shakes and one meal, next week 5 shakes. Right away i am having blood sugar lows so insulin amounts are being adjusted. I am feeling very scared, anxious and overwhelmed.

  14. So I stared my 2 week liquid diet yesterday and I really did fine the first day. This morning I woke up and I'm starving and my mind keeps thinking about food and drifting off to....well if I cheat it's only day 2 so it will be fine. So I decided to try this Millie's sipping broth tortilla soup that I order on Amazon. I read about it on here. I heated it up and it smelled great. It is actually pretty good on its own, but I added a chicken bouillon cube to it, and some pepper and it is delicious! It is warm and filling! I feeling like I can make it though again...at least until dinner time comes and I am starving again..lol Just wanted to share my tip for all those…

  17. I have to get my mindset right. I am having a revision from sleeve to bypass on 9/10 so I start my 2 week full liquid diet on 8/27. I know where I need to be, and I will get my mind right but this week I seem to be struggling to get there. I am struggling with wanting to eat everything I know I can't and won't be having anymore. I find myself sad thinking about the things I won't be able to enjoy anymore to keep myself on track. I am a full time nurse and my husband and I also own an antique mall so I work the equivalent of 2+ full time jobs. So we both work very hard 7 days a week. We don't party, drink, travel, etc, so the one thing we do enjoy is going out for a g…

  18. OMG y'all! I finally have a date! September 10, 2018I was so ecstatic yesterday I couldn't contain myself. I know Ylime started a forum online (that I am part of) but would any of you sleevers be interested in a Facebook group for August-October? A friend told me to look there for a group that is having this done at the same time as me but one doesn't exist so I thought why not create one? Let me know your thoughts y'all, I am going to create it this weekend if there's enough of you interested.

The hospital just called to tell me my surgery is at 3:30 PM on Monday! I’m so irritated that it is so late in the day. It’s bad enough that I’m so nervous as it is and now I have to sit on Monday waiting for my surgery. Also, right now is that time of the month (ladies) and I am just so irritable in general. I just want to get this over with. Why would he schedule a surgery so late?!! 3:30 isn’t even the time! That’s the time I have to be in the building for pre-admission. SO ANNOYED!

So my insurance wants 6 months of medically managed weight loss. Keyword there is "loss". Thursday I go in for my 4-month check-in, and the papers that get filled out each visit will continue to show a weight gain. It was only about 2 or 3 weeks ago that I was put on a dosage of Metformin that doesn't make me sick, and I've lost about 3 pounds since then. Yet my forms will still show a 17 pound gain from when I first started my journey (Started at 360, ballooned up to 380, then got on Metformin and now at 377). I know I still have 2 months still to lose weight, but I'm afraid insurance is going to deny me and all my work will have gone to waste again, all because I wasn't…

My husband and I will being having gastric sleeve surgery on September 10th. My husband had an ivc filter placed on Friday, but he had a pulmonary embolism 12 years ago after a bad fall. Our surgeon wanted to be cautious and asked for him to get the filter because of his history with blood clots and his BMI is high. I wasn’t initially asked to get a filter, but at the last minute our surgeon asked me to get one placed too because of my BMI which is on the higher side too. Did anyone else have an ivc filter placed before surgery?

How long did it take your insurance company to approve you for a surgery date? I have completed all the necessary steps and it has all been submitted. Just haven’t heard anything yet on a surgery date and I am impatient!!

Hi everyone! I just scheduled my first appointment with a surgeon for Sept 21st and they sent me a whole bunch of paperwork to fill it beforehand which is no biggie. Maybe I’m just being overly anxious but I’m scared that I’ll write down the wrong answer somewhere and they won’t agree to do my surgery. I know that I want surgery for all the right reasons- I’m just overthinking it, right? Has anyone had any issues with a surgeon or someone within the program you chose not thinking you wanted the surgery for the right reason?

I made the decision to have Gastric Sleeve Surgery back in May 2017. What led me to this decision was years of painful struggle and self-realization. I was always the heavier kid growing up. I was made fun of daily at school, at home, and out in public. I remember being called a whale and a cow. This made me feel so worthless and very shy. I was afraid to be noticed by anyone so I didn't talk much and was very quiet. I also did not have a lot of friends. When I got in to middle school I remember weighing in on my grandmother's scale in the bathroom and the scale said 120 pounds. My mother was there with me and she said now stay that weight for the rest of your life and yo…

Starting my 2 week diet today! I'm determined to be strong! I know I can do this but I'm still dreading the next 2 weeks of only full liquids. It seems crazy to think it will be 3-4 weeks from now before i will be able to have any real food. I saw this on Facebook today i thought it was appropriate the first day of my liquid diet...lol. 13 days to go I can do this!

Hello! My surgery is August 29 (3 days from now.). I’ve never had general anesthesia. I have a rather personal question. If your abdominal area is numb during surgery, how long does that take to wear off? (Once the surgery is over and you are in recovery). What if you have to go to the bathroom? If you are not yet awake and able to walk, do they use pads under you or bedpans or a catheter? It would help to be prepared for this, even knowing it’s probably not the same for everyone. How long was it after surgery before you evacuated your bowels? Thank you!

  38. So I just started this journey last week. I'm 55 with a 46 BMI. Sigh. How did this happen? I work in a hospital that has a Bariatric Center of Excellence accreditation weight loss program with a wonderful surgeon. My children are grown and I've run out of excuses to get my weight under control. So I did the first hard thing you have to do and that is make the first appointment. Boy are things moving fast now! Some of my fears are being alleviated and I'm coming to terms that this is what I must do in order to get healthy. BUT my concern is my daughter. Hi all! I'm a 32 year old guy from Michigan who has struggled immensely with weight all of his life. In my adult life I've been as low as 190 at times and as high as 379 which is my current highest. I spent the last eight years living in Florida working a hectic job with a chaotic schedule that did not lend itself well to a healthy, active lifestyle and before I knew it between 2015 and 2018 I had ballooned up to my current weight. I knew that my previous methods had not been met with success and I decided it was time for a real change. I read many years ago in a forum that during your six months of trying to lose weight, which is documented by your doctor, that you must lose a certain amount of weight, but that you can’t lose too much weight in order to be covered by Medicaid. I was wondering how much people have lost who were covered by Medicaid, or if anyone has any kind of idea of how much is too much to lose before getting the surgery?

  47. My Family came over yesterday to stage a Intervention to stop me from pursuing my weight loss surgery now that I have completed all requirements and scheduled for operation last week of September. This intervention last 3 hours. What I realize is that they really care about my well being and honestly they are SCARED . I educated them about the process. And emphasize the great possibilities with getting my health in order. Long story short their response derived from fear and love. Although it was much more drastically conveyed to the ears. I say this to say be educated in what your doing so you can educate others and also be firm in your decision. With that said this co…

  48. I realize that most people will probably gloss over this topic...because for most 1 surgery works and is enough and if you fall into this category, please know how fortunate you are. This is not my story I am 5'8. In 2007 I was 273lb's and miserable! I got a Band. Following 13 fills and unfills the best I lost was 60lb's, I never achieved restriction, and unfilled to have 2 kids. All weight returned. In an unrelated accident my port flipped, and in 2015 at 265lb's I was revised to a Gastric Sleeve (Also had my gallbladder taken out, a Haital hernia repaired and the band removed). I lost 60lb's in the first 4 months and then...stopped loosing. At 205l…

Hi there, I have quite a few months to go until my sleeve (166 days to be exact). I'm trying to keep weight steady until my pre-op diet starts (2 weeks before surgery). I definitely don't want to gain weight and don't want to try losing it either at this point as it will make my weight loss harder when i do the pre-op diet so I'm happy to just stay steady and relax and not worry about losing or gaining. I've never had to try this before because I've always been trying really hard to lose weight or going absolutely nuts and stuffing my face silly.
