PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by JanLPhun,

Can anyone recommend a small blender which is powerful enough to actually puree meats and vegetables? Thanks, JanL

Could Anyone Please Give Me Some Advice...I am having Gastric Bypass Surgery Dec 26...I was wondering if I can use GasX after surgery or is there any other suggestions? Thanks For Ur Help

  3. Started by RaeSavage,

Any tips and tricks do this week? I’m already having anxiety and it starts tomorrow.

  4. Started by mew003,

Hi All. My gastric sleeve surgery is scheduled for this Monday, the 2nd and my anxiety is through the roof right now. I’m fearful of getting cold feet. I’ve been working towards this for almost a year and now that it’s here I’m in a panic. My biggest fear is the nausea afterwards as I hate vomiting and I have this fear that I will be nauseous for the rest of my life. How long does it usually last? I just hope I’m making the right decision.

  5. I was traveling this last week for Thanksgiving and was really nervous about the scale this morning. However, it looks like the good choices I made while traveling leveled out the bad since I have a small (.4 lb) loss for the week! I was fully expecting a gain so woohoo!

Hi everyone, I am 5ft 6" and weigh 250lbs, which puts me right at a BMI of 40, which meets my insurance guidelines to consider bariatric surgery. I'm worried that I'll lose weight before I get approved, so when do they record my weight and BMI for insurance? If I lose too much during the pre op stage, will they say "oh well you're not going to meet the criteria for surgery now as you're under the BMI of 40 with no comorbidities"? For some reason that's getting me worked up.

  7. Started by Bustyphemale,

So today I start my Pre OP. After impressing my nutritionist with what I know, she sent a list of must not have. Many things are what I see PpL with in their shopping guides. She however reminded me I'm on an Island so no powerade zero, artificial sweeteners at all as fresh coconut water is available. Additionally no store bought soup or stock. So this weekend I'm making stock for my soups, making 2 different kinds of soups, and I already stocked up on coconut water. My pre op is 2 shakes, 1 solid meal, with lean protein, complex carb and vegetables. , I fruit and non fat dairy. Teas are allowed. Cooked vegetables 1 cup but unlimited raw. Let the journey begin

  8. My surgery is scheduled for December 4. I’m having a gastric bypass. I’ve lost 15 lbs in one week on the liquid diet which seems like a lot. Yesterday was the worst day so far. I’m exhausted and didn’t sleep well last night. I had to get up at 3am to eat a sugar free jello because I was so hungry. I’m allowed 5 protein shakes a day. Along with sugar free jello and broth. I do not feel well. I’m constantly drinking water and constantly peeing. It’s like I can’t catch up with the dehydration. I know I have only one more week but I feel terrible. Thinking of calling the nurse practitioner on Friday - I know I should be hungry but I feel off. Any insights or advice? Thanks

Hi! My surgery is scheduled for Dec 4th. I’m ready to go, finished with Dr’s and pretty much on protein shakes a day and a sensible dinner. My husband is trying to discourage the surgery feeling that I can do it naturally and that it’s not safe, even though I have battled with my weight all my life. I have had 7 prior surgeries and haven’t had the best track record regarding complications. I think I probably could lose some of my weight naturally, however as most of u know it’s maintaining it that’s the real issue. I need to stay positive but it’s difficult when my husband is praising me for the 12 pounds I have lost since starting this new journey and thinking “he” ca…

  10. Started by Danni Jo,

The results of my sleep study showed mild sleep apnea. The mild range is 5-15. I scored 6.5. My surgery is supposed to be in 2 weeks but I don't know if they'll make me treat it first. Anyone know what range of apnea they require CPAP treatment for? Is it possible I'd still be approved for surgery since it's such a mild case? The sleep clinic said it will more than likely clear up with weight loss. Thanks for any info you may have. I just don't want to wait the long holiday weekend without an idea since I won't hear from my surgeon until next week probably.

Hey everyone, I am in the middle of getting my pre-requisites done, the biggest hang up so far is the psychiatric evaluation. How many visits has anyone had to go thru? The Dr. doing the evaluation wants 3. My first appointment was about 500 questions, literally and today was my second, but since his computer froze up they have to reschedule me and he's booking into January now. I dont think I should be penalized for there computer error. Frustrating, as that is my hang up now.

  12. My surgery is in 1 month: 1 am a self-pay LOOP DS (Sadi-S) candidate in Mexico. I'm paranoid that I'll get there and my surgery will be canceled the day before due to some rare/hidden health issue. For reference, I had a slipped lap band about 5 years ago and a gastric sleeve 4 years ago. So, this is my THIRD surgery. I currently don't have any concerning symptoms, except for a very large sleeve. I don't have any current barium swallow x-rays, so I will be getting them the day before surgery. It is on that day (the day before) that I will find out if the surgery will proceed. This is what I'm so nervous about. I'm curious about reasons anyone else…

Hi all. I’m due to have my period right smack in the middle of my scheduled surgery. I know, tmi, however I ree-he-heely don’t want them to reschedule me. Is this something that would stop the procedure from going on as planned or is it a non issue? Anyone else have Aunt Flo during surgery?

Name Some Thing You Wish You Would of Brought for Your Stay Over Night In The Hospital? I am having the Gastric Bypass in December. Is the Anything You Recommend I take for my over night stay?

  15. I'm having SADI-S procedure next week laparoscopically. I've been advised that I will have "drains" placed. Of course I will ask my doctor what this means, but can any laypeople interpret what this is and why I need it?

  16. I had my psych appt today and she indicated no concerns. Met with the nurse and all medical tests are done and good. Now back to the surgeon to sign off and then schedule. They told me it could take up to 2 weeks to hear back but an early December appt is likely. Anyone else looking at first or second week of December? Lori

I am starting to think about my post op diet and I'm curious if anyone mixed protein into your SF jello and if it still set? I have Isopure unflavored protein so I could do any flavor. If not, I'll give it a test. BUt if you have and it failed would be good to know. Thanks, Lori

Hi Everyone, I’m scheduled to undergo the gastric sleeve surgery next Monday, December 2nd. I’m anxious and scared about this life changing decision but I’m also excited about the journey ahead. I’m on day 4 of my 11 day pre-surgery diet and the Protein Shakes are gagging me. I’m limited to using shakes from Bariatric Advantage and Bariatric Fusion. Any tips on how to make them taste better? I’ve tried using extracts and drink mixes. I’m also hoping for some encouraging words for this surgery. I hope I’m making the right decision. I have this fear that I’ll feel nauseous for the rest of my life and I won’t be able to enjoy food ever again.

Hello! I started my journey of weigh in's and appointments to get the gastric sleeve May 2018. I lost 30 pounds on my own by July 2018. I refused to use diet pills. i started out at 339.8lbs March 2018. by October 2018 I was 247lbs. I live in Panama City, Florida. Hurricane Michael ripped through my town as a category 5. I was displaced until August 2019 when I purchased my new house. I was on a roll until this Hurricane. I was unable to weigh in the last two months of my process (October and November) as there was no power or water for 4 weeks after the hurricane. And most buildings were destroyed. I have since gained a little bit of the weight back while trying to m…

Anyone here in law enforcement, I am looking for the average recovery time to light duty, and then full duty.

  23. Today I realized that the food festivities are in FULL EFFECT!!! From office luncheons and potlucks, Friendsgiving, Happy Hours...this is all just a warm-up to the Big Event of fine dining and grandiose entertainment and food comas....THANKSGIVING!!! Today, I chose smoked turkey from Honeybaked as my protein and very small servings of carbs at our luncheon. I drank water, I did have cake, I didn't finish it, I took the remainder of it to my dad's house for him to have. Now, instead of going in my kitchen eating that cake I'm going to drink a protein shake and go to bed.

I am scheduled for surgery on Dec 31st (yay!). As part of my pre-op regiment I had to lose almost 30 lbs which I did. Now that my surgery is scheduled, I've found it much harder to stick with my pre-op diet. If I gain any weight between now and my pre-op appointment or surgery the Dr. will cancel. And becuase between now and then is Thanksgiving and Christmas I already see it being a challenge. Any tricks that have helped you stay on track? Any healthy "treat" recipes you can share? Thanks in advance, Lori

Hi guys I'm curious what-if any- extra foods are you eating or drinking before your surgery knowing you won't get to eat them afterwards? Any weird cravings or food rituals? I only have 11 days and three of them is a clear liquid diet so I KNOW there's gonna be a chocolate shake and a piece of cheesecake somewhere in there....

So I am seeing a lot of people who still have to meet longer term requirements to get approved for surgery than I did. I was told by my primary care doctor he did not have to give an approval..Go straight to the gastric dr. They had me do a psych eval that day and they sent in my BMI with that to insurance, BCBS of ND and I was approved in a week. I have a friend who wants surgery and I told him my experience..but he isn't having such luck. It's crazy how things change state to state and the insurance requirements.

**sorry this one's a long one!!!!** Hello everybody, I had an appt with my doctor a few days ago for follow up on my bloodwork and ultrasound on my gallbladder because she thought I might have needed to get my gallbladder removed. Turns out all my labs were perfect, no gallbladder problems but I did have a little bit of a higher cholestoral and I found out that I also have Fatty Liver [emoji45][emoji45] we discussed how it happens and how you treat it and basically... She said I have to lose weight. I finally brought up weight loss surgery to her. She wrote down everything she could to try to get me to get approved. I’m on day 10 of 14 for the pre-op Optifast stage. I’m type 1 diabetic and woke up the other day low and confused and tore into a pack of wafers. I’ve also ‘cheated’ a few days with decalf coffee with almond milk or skim milk. The days I did, I had one shake less. Has anyone actually had their surgery cancelled for not following the pre-op strictly??

Hello! I have some questions regarding the process for the desert region. I was referred by my PCP to their "weight loss specialist," Dr. Provonsha on Thursday, and received a call from his office on Friday scheduling me for a meeting with him on 11/26 in Palm Desert. Does this mean that I'm part of the Options program? I have no idea what to expect, or what is going on, really. I specifically told my PCP I wanted a referral to the bariatric surgery program, and that's what she sent. However, when I spoke with the specialist scheduler the next morning and mentioned that I wanted to speak about surgery, she said "Oh you'll have to speak to him about that." …

  35. So yesterday was my first initial consult with the surgeon, Dr. Amit Taggar with Florida Surgical Weight Loss Center. I'm currently 5'5, 256 with high cholesterol. I am so ready to have this surgery so that I can stop the medication train before it gets too outta hand. I was planning on a late January to early February surgery due to Aetna only required 3 months with a Nutritionist. Boy was I in for a surprise. My surgeon informed me that Aetna now requires 6 months supervised visits with the Nutritionist and that the plan changed this month. WTH?!!?! Oh well.. I can see this is going to be the longest 6 months of my life. During this time, I will focus on l…

Had my initial consult yesterday, and I'm so excited! I'm also kicking myself that I didn't do this years ago, but I guess I just wasn't ready yet. After watching the presentation, and the Q&A session, I've decided on RNY. My only hiccup is that my insurance changes January 1st! So the plan is to do all of the pre-op testing under my current insurance, and then submit for approval under the new insurance on Jan 2! Hoping I get approved right away and can get on the schedule for the end on January. My first nutrition appointment is Monday, and I'm hoping I can lose 25lbs on my own prior to surgery. I've been reading the posts on here non-stop for the p…

Hi There! I am looking for a little insight- I am curious is this situation has happened to others, and if so how it was resolved. I am pre-op for a Sleeve Gastrectomy. I have completed all of my requirements (3-month medically supervised diet, Psych consult, Nutrition consults, Fitness consults, lost the 10 lbs my surgeon was requiring) and my final weigh in is this Tuesday. My issue is I am caught in a loophole of sorts regarding the Sleep Apnea testing. I had my first Sleep Apnea test (in-home) done in September. I came back diagnosed as having Obstructive Sleep Apnea. So my surgeon called and said I had to contact my PCP to order the 2nd test- this In-L…

  40. Started by Lydarose,

I am scheduled to have a Roux en y gastric bypass procedure on December 16th at 7:30am CT. I had originally wanted a gastric sleeve, but the endoscopy that I had showed that due to a condition in my esophageal flap (Hill Grade 4), that would not be possible. Anyway, I am excited and scared. My 3 week liquid liver-shrinking diet starts on Sunday, November 24th.

  41. Started by loridee11,

I'm pre-surgery - just got my date of 12/31/19 - but so far on my pre-op diet I've lost almost 35 lbs. However, I'm pretty tall and carry my weight fairly evenly so that hasn't resulted in much change in clothing size until just this last week. I have a large plastic storage bin I've been putting my too small clothes in because I was planning on losing weight. I went through it today and more than half of them fit My closet suddenly got much fuller - yay!

OMG! Its happening. For my 14 day pre-op I can have: 1. 4 optifast shakes 2. Herb Ox bouillon cubes 3. Clear broth soup/bone broth (once a day) 4. SF Popsicle 5 SF gelatin 6. Mi0 7, decaf tea, coffee 8. Propel 0 so far so good. I am ready for this challenge. I just have to remember my goal is my surgery day 11/18! anyone else going through their pre-op fast?

I should start on a positive that I’ve lost 20 pounds since my pre op appointment last Friday. Silver lining and all that. With that though.....I’m so exhausted/weak/irritable. Just being awake takes all my energy, let alone working. I’m allowed 5 shakes a day, one cup broth and plain water. This morning I had raging diarrhea (sorry). I honestly thought people that took the pre op phase off work we’re crazy but I totally get it now. My boss lets me sneak into treatment rooms to take 10 minute naps here and there to get through the day. I can’t wait till next Tuesday and i can rest. I mean, I’ll probably be in pain but at least I can rest. ??? That’s all! J…
