PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. I have a Starbucks skinny cinnamon dolce latte on my way to work every morning. The nutrition info for it is 100 calories, 14g carbs, 9g protein. I started my pre-op diet yesterday. My Dr. states for the 3 weeks prior to surgery I should have at least 100g protein and less than 50g carbs per day. They are OK with coffee. I'd like to swap this out with something lower in carbs. I can't drink plain black coffee. Has anyone had any success mixing protein powder with their coffee for a latte type substitute? If so, do have suggestions for one with the best flavor/best mixes in to hot liquids?

  2. Started by Zemi,

Getting closer to my surgery date with only a few weeks left before pre-op begins and my thoughts (and pesky emotions) are running all over the place. Somewhere between excitement to complete and utter panic. so thought about postponing surgery for a few months ... or a year, to have more time to lose weight to make surgery safer and work on my head more first but then i think more likely i’ll just end up in the same place as now but have lost the time. instead i could be weighing a lot less and getting healthier. So not really wanting to postpone and instead pushing forward! One of the big things that comes up is the feelings of being alone in all of this and the la…

Hello, I'm scheduled for surgery on Monday, just wondering has anyone messed up on their 2 week liquid diet?. I came home to prepair for surgery and now I want blue crabs. I know my doctor told me I can have a protein and veggie in place of dinner protein shake but are the blue crabs acceptable to eat with surgery on a few days away?..

  4. Started by brandimichellexo,

My surgeon has me on a 2 protein shakes a day and a lean cuisine in the evening. 100 calorie snacks in between meals (low carb). How much weight did you guys lose on the pre op diet? And what type of diet did y’all have?

  5. Started by Chiptress ,

Was supposed to have my surgery 3 days from now on Monday 8/12/19. Found out this morning that my TSH thyroid levels are 4.5 so my insurance is asking for additional info & follow up from my PCP. At 1st I was upset but now I feel a little relieved. My pre-op hasn’t been going as restrictive as I’d like & I can do better. Might as well be as healthy going into this as possible. Rescheduled 1 week for 8/19/19

I’ve read about gerd impacting surgery choices, does chronic gastritis?

  7. Started by cutie8892,

Hey everyone!! I am 19 years old, weight 319lbs, & my height is 5’81/2 (my BMI is 45 I think). I’m really nervous over my insurance not covering the surgery due to the fact that I don’t have any comorbitities. I’m generally pretty healthy aside from the fact that my feet hurt from carrying so much weight. My health insurance is healthfirst through Medicaid & I am on the last month of my “6 months weigh ins”!!! Do you think I might have a problem not getting covered?

  8. Started by curlygirlgetsfit,

Finally received my surgery date today & I’m having surgery August 21st. That day is even more special since it’s my mother’s birthday as well! Do I have a surgery date twin? Where are all my Aug 2019 cousins? It’s about to be our time! ?

  9. Started by ljmasse,

I just received my date of August 29 for my R n Y. Just wondering if any of you have any " what I wish I had known before surgery advice " ? Feel free to share even the smallest detail, ever little bit of advise will help me ! Thank you ! Also any other Aug 29th dates out there ?

  10. Started by Chiptress ,

Ok.... honesty time. I’m having my surgery 8/12/19. My pre-op requires 1st week 2 meals 1 protein shake. 2nd week 2 shakes 1 meal. Today should be my 3rd day of 2 meals 1 shake but I’m struggling. I think I’m still thinking about how restrictive my life will be post op. Normally I have great discipline. People around me always comment on how when I put my mind to something I do it. Does or did Anyone else have this problem?

  11. Started by curlygirlgetsfit,

As the 21st gets closer, I’m getting more nervous about having surgery. I think the main thing I am afraid of is being put to sleep. This will be my first surgery. How did you guys get over the fear of having surgery? Did they give you anything before surgery to relax you?

  12. Started by jackieecho,

I am meeting with family Dr this morning and want to ask him for a referral for surgery. So nervous he will say no. How did you approach your Dr? What did you say?

  13. Started by brandimichellexo,

So, I’m supposed to start my pre op diet on August 26th but I’m not going to lie.... I have been living my fat girl life and put on some weight. I wanted to start my pre op early, as in tomorrow. Maybe not as intense, but definitely start getting used to my protein shakes and smaller portions. Do you guys think that’s okay? I know the whole reason of the diet is to reduce the size of your liver, I don’t want that to affect it. What do y’all think?

  14. Started by AnnieD78,

I’m having RNY on August 14. Today begins day 4 of the full liquids diet. The nutritionist told me many patients say this is the hardest part and I can see why. My stomach is upset, my sleep is interrupted and my mood is... hangry. She said by day 5 I should start to lose my appetite, which will make it easier. I’ve noticed I associate physical hunger with something really, really awful. But I was thinking... for those of you who have had surgery.... do you feel like 2 weeks on the liquid diet helped you better mentally prepare for life AFTER surgery in any way? I was thinking that might be another benefit to this preop diet... so that it’s not just one day having sur…

I am almost 3 weeks out since having surgery. I do not have acid reflux. I have reflux like when I eat something it just wants to come all the way back up to my throat and settled there. I’ve mentioned this to my doctor the three times I have seen him He gave me protonic‘s to take when I got home and I’ve been taking it and it’s not helping and he’s not listening any suggestions? I am to the point I don’t want to eat.

Ok.... 10 days until my VSG and I am freaking out a little. my dr office has me on a protein shake only diet for two weeks and I totally cheated and had fries and some of a pita today- I knew what I was doing but just did it anyway. ??‍♀️ I was so excited when I got my surgery date that I actually did a modified version of this diet for two weeks before I had to( my office has different plans based on BMI so I followed the plan for the BMI above mine)- doing shakes during the day, low carb dinner and I did great- lost 10 lbs. I haven’t lost anything this week I don’t know why I cheated today- and now I am so scared that I won’t have the discipline aft…

My name is Kristie. I'm a 49 year old wife, mom, RN from Seattle. I've been overweight pretty much since I stopped competing in sports after high school. The pounds have crept up slowly over the years. I've had some success losing on my own, but I imagine like most here haven't been able to maintain my losses. I dropped from 285 to 200.1 (never hit onderland) on my own 6 years ago through calorie restriction and daily exercise. I slowly quit tracking, slacked on exercise, and unhealthy habits crept back in. I re-gained all but 2 pounds of that loss. I've dropped 14 pounds in my pre-op period. I'm scheduled for a VSG on 8/12. I had my 4 hour pre-op class yest…

  18. I had my RNY gastric bypass in August of 2001 at that time had lost from 322 to at time of surgery weighed 295 pounds. I went on to lose more weight to 138 pounds by 2 years out. Then in February 8, 2016, (14 1/2 years out) I had a Gastrojejuvenectomy and hiatal hernia repair. I had gained weight up to 228 and my pouch had eroded and i had a hiatal hernia. Dr Blair Job of Pittsburgh, PA of the Esophageal and Lung institute was my surgeon at this time. I had this done at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, which after this time and 2 more surgeries to come in the future with bad experiences, I don't wish to ever go there again. More to be revealed if anyone answers my questi…

  21. I just applied for bariatric surgery and was told that someone would be calling me to make an appointment with the surgeon. I am happy and nervous. I am 54 years old, 5'8" and weigh about 315 now. I am coming off some hardships--caregiver to parents who passed away, dear friend of 30+ years died of cancer, laid off twice in the last 6 years and a major fire 3 years ago, lost everything. I gained weight steady during this period, and coming to my layoff last year I really gained a lot. I am miserably fat. It hurts to stand up or walk more than 2 minutes. I developed edema, which is painful. Struggle getting in and out of my large car. Steps? Ha! I avoid th…

Who else is having their surgery in August?

  23. Started by MarvelGirl25,

Hi everyone! Today's day 1 for me on the pre op diet and I'm currently sipping on a delicious french vanilla protein shake. I'm feeling determined, anxious, excited, and motivated to complete this liquid diet. I'm afraid this feeling will diminish once temptation is put in front of me or I start to get hungry. Does anyone have any tips to stay motivated or to avoid temptation? Especially temptation and pressure to eat from coworkers and friends who don't know about the surgery? Also, my surgery is August 5th and I would love to find a friend to go through this with. If anyone's surgery is around the same time as mine feel free to message me!

  24. Started by AnnieD78,

So... this is kinda personal. But I’m wondering if prior to surgery anyone had this same feeling. With the size I have gotten, I don’t want to go anywhere or do anything on the weekends. I go to work 5 days a week and I’m visible and walking around all over there. But then the weekend comes and all I want to do is lay on the couch. And it’s even easier to be a shut in now that I can just have my groceries delivered. It’s a combination of not having the energy and being ashamed and just... not caring to do anything. My surgery is August 12 and it’s like this beacon in my life. I hope when I lose weight that I will want to go out and be seen and DO THINGS.

On the eve eve of starting my liquid diet, I'm trying to get in those foods that I love. I'm having sushi, miso soup, and a crab rangoon for lunch (Lunch special). Don't know what for dinner and daytime tomorrow, but tomorrow night my sister is cooking me a feast! Lemon Chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, and my fav, green bean casserole (she's a doll). What other foods do you think I should try to get in (before people get testy, I'm still eating smaller portions because I've completely changed my diet)? Anything you were sad you didn't get a last taste of?

  26. I had my EGD on July 9th and still have not heard back from the surgeon, or the office. I do know the results of the EGD and he plans on fixing that, but I not sure if he means a Gastric Bypass or just to repair the fistula he found. How long should I wait to call into the office? Lynda

I am totally into 600lb life featuring Dr. Nowzaradan so I was curious if anyone knows or has a copy of the diet plan he sends home with his patients after he sees them for the first time. He expects large weight loss, in a month or two so I am curious as to what the diet plan consists of.

  34. I went to my appointment today, my first. I have sleep apnea and gigantic tonsils. Worried about the Endoscopy almost as much as the surgery. Anyone in the same boat that’s had it (I’m just a tad bit of a hypochondriac...??‍♀️). Just looking for reassurance. Also, they said we can go through with the surgery, if all is well, in 3 months. It’s so quick. My son’s having a hard time and mad that I’m doing the sleeve. Says just diet and exercise. I’m 40 and struggled my entire life. He’ll be 18 and lost his dad when he was 8, so there is fear of losing me. I fear that but I fear he will if I don’t do this! I want to live a long life. I had a hard life with his dad (who died b…

I enjoy strongman training and hate knowing I'm going to lose strength. But I need the weight gone. What was the wait like? Any tips for getting back into it, when the time comes of course. Any help is appreciated.

Hello! I found these forums yesterday while I was anxiously awaiting for my insurance to approve my surgery. I'm so glad I found such a great wealth of information and support here so I wanted to share that as of this morning my insurance, Excellus BCBS, approved my gastric sleeve surgery! I haven't spoken to the surgery scheduler since I've heard, but my tentative date is 9/30/19. I have so many emotions; excited, anxious, nervous, motivated... I'm just glad to be moving forward towards getting my life back or starting a brand new one. I'm looking forward to following all of your stories and sharing my own.

I’m scheduled for surgery on August 15th. I had a bad experience the last surgery I had. Not with anesthesia, but had a bad infection after. Lately I have been having dreams about going under. A few days ago I woke up yelling no and felt like I couldn’t breathe. Last night I had another dream I kept trying to take the mask off. Is this normal? Should I reschedule until this subsides.

Right now those criteria, which are three decades old, are “arbitrarily” based on a patient’s body mass index and don’t account for other confounding factors. “Too many see obesity as a problem of willpower, and it’s simply not,” Brethauer, a co-author of the new guidelines, said in a statement. “Patients must participate in their care by making healthy lifesty…

  43. I'm just curious for those who had preop diets that was just shakes and liquids? Were you able to lose weight easily or did you need to include some physical activity as well If I chose 3 shakes a day I'll be looking around 500kcal a day and 80-90g protein, that is if I can manage to be satisfied just with protein shakes.. If you want to share how many weeks diet preop and how many shakes a day? I've got plenty of powder to mix up so that's not an issue!! Getting closer to surgery so curious tnx

Hello! My gastric sleeve is tomorrow, and I’m unsure if a food I like is able to be eaten today. They said I should be on a liquid diet, but I’m wondering if yogurt/pudding counts as a liquid? I ask because after my mom’s surgery, they had her on a liquid diet and gave her jell-o. Help! I just want a yogurt!
