PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by RoseQuartz56,

Hello! Tomorrow (or today.. it's 12:30 am), the 18th, I will go for a final weigh-in before my surgery on the 22nd. My last visit was on the 2nd, and I was at 387. They said I would have to be 370 by next visit but I just check and I'm at 377... While I lost 10 lbs since last visit, I'm anxious that they'll say it wasn't enough. Has anyone experienced this before? I need some reassurance! I've been on liquid diet the past week just to make sure I'd be at my lowest and I'm so unbelievably frustrated I'm not at 370 yet. Help!

  2. Started by Roxie75,

I'm new to this forum. I'm doing all of my pre-op appointments at this point. The doctor put me on the South beach diet. I am on Phase 1, Week 2. I find myself cheating sometimes with my good choices? Is anyone else experiencing this, or do I just need to work a little harder at refusing temptation?

  3. Currently having my clear liquid dinner for the night. Tomorrow will be my last day on the clear liquids. Surgery is scheduled for July 8TH at 10:30AM. I am feeling a plethora of emotions. I did really well avoiding the temptation of eating any of the chicken casserole for my family. Just so ready to get this surgery done. It has been a long time coming. Might as well make some of my favorite tea and then call it a night.

  4. Started by KayBes,

Hey guys! I'm in a super weird predicament that I'd never thought I'd be in. I am in the beginning stages of weight loss surgery, scheduled to meet with the team in two weeks and then a few months until signing consent and getting a surgery appointment. Last month my common law partner of 12 years told me he is transgender. I never dated in high school, I have only ever been with him. So now at 31 and beginning this journey I find myself single. We are good friends so besides the financial and emotional stress there aren't any bad or hard feelings. But now I'm looking at making new relationships, both friendships and potentially eventually romantic ones. How do …

  5. I am still in the very early stages of this whole process. I have met with a surgeon, gotten insurance approval, have a date for a scope, have an appointment with a nutritionist, and will me with my GP next week to start the 6 months of monitoring. just curious how much you share with your extended family. My parents are on board as well as my besties and my husband, but I have refrained from telling his family as of yet. They will know eventually, but right now it’s a mixture of embarrassment and feeling like they won’t support me. My MIL has made several comments about how I wasn’t raised like my husband (which he shot down PTL) and can be very stuck up at t…

  6. Started by jaengabby,

Hi I’m very concerned about my husband getting this surgery... He has suffered from Gout for more than 12 years... and we really have t found any info on Gout and the VSG... any info from some one already having Gout before and how they are doing now long term is greatly appreciated! Thanks

  7. It’s so interesting how different surgeons are with their requirements! My pre op is completely different than friends who had it earlier this year. I wonder how surgeons choose what diets they require. What was yours?

  8. I finally got my surgery date for July 23rd so I have a little over a month before surgery. When did you start to cut things out? Like soda, sweets, ect... I probably drink one soda a day maybe two tops. I use to be a Venti frappuccino everyday person, but I've already cut those to like once a week. I do still eat sweets after dinner like an ice cream cone. I don't snack anymore and I'm trying to eat breakfast. Before I would skip it and only eat one or two meals a day then snack. So I'm wondering what I could be doing better to get ready for not eating the things I normally do.

  9. Hi all Brand new here. My surgery is scheduled for July 11. I am 7 days into my pre op clear liquid diet. All was going well until this morning. I feel horrible- light headed, shakey, weak, and exhausted- and I just woke up. I have been drinking at least 75oz of actual water everyday plus 2 mugs of broth, 2 30g protein shakes, 2 cups of sf jello, and a few sf popsicles and 12oz of sf Gatorade. Anyone have any advise on what I can do to help beat this feeling? It’s my 7 year old birthday party today and I need to feel better. Any help would be appreciated- Thanks and have a great day.

  10. Hi, in the intro section I explained that, after 19 1/2 years, I am going to have a "tune.up" Revision details in my other post This is my third time with bariatric surgery, and I am ready this time. I am working, hard, on my three major obstacles to a healthy post bariatric life. 1. Small portions I had my friend, Annoying Jan, come and stay with me for two weeks. She is 70, looks like senior Barbie, is incredibly active and is always dishing out advice. I decided to listen to her for a change. She spent time with me looking at portion control, frequency of eating, dealing with the evening hunger that has always defeated me. I told her "F Off!" A few times…

  11. Hi! so I only need to get blood work and an ekg. I’m concerned because I’ve seen people talk about a myriad of tests they’ve had to get done, specifically a sleep test. I’m paying out of pocket if it matters? Did everybody here need a sleep test? What if I have sleep apnea and have no idea? Does it change the surgical procedure if you do have it? does anybody know if the blood test has to be a fasting blood test? thanks!

Swollen ankles and feet I due to have wls on the 26th of August. Has a y of you guys had a problem with swelling. My feet and ankles stay swolle. Fluid pills do not help.

  13. Today was my pre-op appointment, my surgery is next Wednesday and I was informed that I should have my gallbladder removed at the same time has anyone had this done and are there any complications thank you. And how long was your hospital stay I'm starting to get nervous thank you.

  14. Tomorrow I see my surgeon for my last visit before surgery, which will be 10 days later. Originally I chose the sleeve because I felt it was the better option for me. But now I'm scared I'm making the wrong choice. I'm scared to develop GERD. I don't have GERD now, but sometimes I do get reflux maybe once every two week or so seems like when I eat meats. I've had GERD bad when I was pregnant. To the point I was constantly throwing up all the time because of all the acid in my throat which cause it to bleed. I had to take Prilosec a majority of my pregnancy. I don't know if I'm over thinking it and I'll likely be fine. The first time I seen my surgeon he seen my enrollment…

  15. Started by shannamarie,

I signed my consent forms yesterday and the NP and surgeon sent in prescriptions to have on hand for after surgery. I've ordered several different sampler packs of protein supplements to get me started after surgery. I got the large sampler pack from here, a variety pack of Iso100 drinks, and a sample pack from Unjury. I also have a list of stuff to get at Walmart to have on hand, such as juven powder, mucinex, allergy medication for post-nasal drip, stool softener/laxative.. etc. I'm about to make a list of things I should do before surgery, too. Any other ideas or things I'm missing?? 11 days to go!

  16. As of today, July 11th, I completed all of my requirements for my Surgeon & Insurance ! I’m still waiting on the results from my Sleep Study I did June 11th & my Upper GI I did yesterday (he should have it by now). There is nothing left for me to do, but to see my Surgeon for the 2nd time July 30th. Unless I have to do something else regarding the Sleep Study & Upper GI results. I should be receiving my surgery date on the 30th as well & I’m super excited! I had my 1st consultation May 28th. I’m down 16.7 of my required 15lbs ☺️ The only thing I’ll be doing within the next two weeks is making sure the office has all my documents needed that will be submitted to my I…

  17. OK, was on Day 13 of pre-op diet when I changed dr's. Had 2 or 3 days off...and back onto pre-op diet. By time surgery date comes around, I'll have been 'pre-op'ing for 30+ days. WHY is it harder this first week of starting again...than the ENTIRE 13 days I had been on it before. I was never as hungry as I am now even though I'm following same pre-op. I am not having the 1 lb a day loss I was having during my first pre-op attempt. Is it my body resisting me playing starvation games already...or maybe my mental mindset? Probably both. Trying to think, within the bounds of the pre-op items I'm allowed, if I can come up with some happier combination where I wo…

  18. Started by TattooedSeaStar,

I went to my General Practitioner for the first of my 6 months of observation. I already knew that it wasn’t going to be a great visit, but I was shocked at how badly it actually went. First let me say according to the nurse at the surgeon’s office, my surgeon can’t be the one to monitor me for 6 months. My GP is a former army doctor. I usually try to pick a female (sorry guys, there is a difference) but after my last doctor misdiagnosed my hernia as a fold of fat, I went to my husband’s doctor. Unfortunately I feel like he is a pill pusher, and today was another “let’s take a pill” kind of day. He tried to prescribe phentermine again but I hate how it makes my …

Greetings Everyone, I’m new to the app and group. I am scheduled for surgery on July 16th and have to complete a three week pre-op diet. This has been tough, especially since I’m experiencing headaches. Any advice for me. Tomorrow is the second cookout I will be attending and I am deathly afraid. The first cookout, I did well but since I’ve been craving food these last couple of days, it’s been challenging.

  20. Just wondering cause I didn't see it listed that I couldn't in my notes from my doc.

  21. This is my first post so please bear with me. I would love to hear from a few of you that have had experience on sleep apnea and sleep tests. My PCP ordered a in hospital sleep test but I decided I would rather pay out of pocket and get a at home test. I wake up often and Im nervous about needing to use the restroom while hooked up to all of the monitors. I did this test about a week ago using iSleep . During the night of the study I asked my husband If he could check on me and make sure I was still connected properly. He did and in the morning he told me that he could hear me snoring and stop breathing. It scared him to the point that he wanted to wake me but thought it…

I have Amerigroup medicaid in Texas and I have an appointment with the Weight loss surgeon and I'm terrified that I won't qualify! I'm 5'2 and 220 lbs my bmi is 40 and I have high blood pressure and cholesterol and sleep apnea. If anyone knows anything please let me know! Thanks!

I have been trying for years to qualify for weight loss surgery with insurance. I have to lose 10% of my body weight and keep it off. Unless I have some kind of condition that prevents me from losing weight, which I do not, there are no exceptions. I have not even come close to 10% and I am tired of waisting my life being depressed about it. So I took matters into my own hands and am planning on having the duodenal switch with Dr Ungson in Mexicali, self pay. My family doesn't even know I am going to Mexico, they would probably disown me if they knew. I just told them I am going out of state. My mom is the only person I have to watch my children while I am gone, and she i…

Hi everyone! I have a random question that popped up when my hubby and I were discussing our plans for when I have my surgery. I have 3 more nutrition appointments before I can submit for approval, but am looking forward to getting this done :-) One of the things that my hubby was planning on doing for me the day before my surgery was sending me to the spa for a spa day. Would that be ok? Has anyone else done that? Best of luck to everyone on this journey! I can't express how much reading your stories has helped me reassure myself that this is the right journey for me :-) Krystal "Tile" Karges

  26. I was very excited about this surgery until a couple of days ago when I read about post-gastric bypass hypoglycemia. That lead to me reading about more complications post surgery. Last Friday, I was so excited and couldn't wait thinking only positive things would come of this. Now I am pretty scared and wondering if I'm doing the right thing. I weighed 274 going into my first appointment and am now 264 as of this morning. Over the recent years, I've developed sleep apnea and just found out I have diabetes. This surgery is the better choice for me -- I know that. I'm just scared. Cheer me up?

Not sure under what forum this would be under so I just posted to this one since I’m pre op and trying to brainstorm. So my question is what hobbies do you or have you taken on since being through or on this process? I’m looking for a new hobby since my old one was baking. I LOVE TO BAKE! But the reason I want to find another and different hobby is because when I bake I tend to eat most of what I bake and give some of it away before I eat it all. I feel like I need to give it up completely because as I’m making what I am making (from scratch) I tend to “taste test it” before putting it in the oven and even after too haha. Please share some of your hobbies! Than…

Pre op ---I'm so scared of my next appointment my next weigh in is on July 25. I had my last one on June 13 and I have only lost 2 pounds but it keeps fluctuating. I am following the dietary guidelines and walking alot. I'm so afraid of what my nutritionist is going to say.

  29. Started by shannamarie,

So I had my first weigh in for my month long pre-op Optifast diet this afternoon and it appears I GAINED 2 lbs since Saturday. My logical side is telling me it was the end of the day, I drank 60 oz plus 3 shakes throughout the day, plus a shower just an hour before weighing in. Plus I've started lifting weights the last 3 days which I realized can cause water retention while the muscles heal. Plus it wasn't a full week since we started on Saturday. I'm sure I'm doing fine but it was still a bit discouraging after being hungry all day the last 4 days. I'm supposed to lose about 20 lbs or they "may postpone surgery." I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't lift weights unt…

  31. Started by Danielleh,

Anyone else having their consult on the 8th or around that date? I have my first consult with Dr. Ayzengart and I am beyond ready to start my process. I’ll have 4 months of weight checks with my PCP so I’ll only need two more and whatever else he has me doing.

  32. Started by NagathaChristie,

My bariatric coordinator told me that they can't schedule my surgery until I have gotten and started using a CPAP. I had an at home sleep study and now am scheduled for a sleep clinic sleep study on 21Jul2019. How long after your sleep study did it take to get the CPAP? What is it like to try to get sleep with that thing on your face? I am feeling frustrated because I want my surgery date and to get my 3 week liquid diet out of the way.

  33. Started by BulletWithButterflyWings,

So surgery is in 30 hours and I just got most of my bag packed and ready to go. I have these things: *CPap *chapstick *deodorant *travel sized toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, my biotene, and soap) *eye mask, small Dove lotion tin *A change of panties *hairbrush and pony tail holders I plan on leaving in the clothes I come in with. All in all, i have a small Supernatural backpack that I've fit everything in surprisingly lol except the CPAP lol some of the stuff I'm taking is the same stuff I leave in there anyway lol. I use it as a purse so it can serve 2 purposes. Anything I need, I need to fit in it. Way less **** to keep up w…

So I'm in the fist stages of starting this journey and would love advice from anyone who has had the sleeve. I have struggled with my weight since I was a teenager. At 41 I can no longer work out the way I used too due to knee issues. I am currently at the highest weight I have ever been. I have went back and forth with getting the sleeve for a few years now. Honestly just figured I would work my butt off as usual and get the weight off. Since I'm severely limited with exercise that's no longer an option. My question is how many of you regret getting the sleeve? I feel like I'm truly never going to be able to enjoy certain foods ever again? Is this truly the case? or do y…

Hey Sleevers! Just wondering, is anyone else having a Veritcal Sleeve surgery this month? My surgery is on May 13 (two days before my birthday). Let me know! ? P.S If you already had surgery this month, let me know how it went! ?

Soooooo.... I’m honestly nervous for the 2-week liquid diet. Can anyone who has been through it... did you still have energy? Could you make it through work days okay? I’m hoping that by the second week you just don’t want food anymore! ??????

I am in the prep stage for the sleeve and I’m petrified of what I’m going to look like when all is said and done. I do not seek attention and have always worn oversized clothes no matter what size I am. (I prefer to stay behind the scenes) I’m 5’0” and will probably shrink a couple more inches. I’m going to be 50 in August. When I was becoming a teen and blossomed, many people noticed my breasts before anything else about me. I started gaining weight around this time. My husband used to joke that if I lost my breast he would divorce me, not knowing this is a sore subject with me. I hate them and the attention they bring. Many say to embrace them but I just can’t. I started this process in late January. I was scheduled to meet with the surgeon right away and I really liked him. After speaking with him I talked to the Coordinator, also very nice and assuring. I kept hearing, "Call us if you have ANY questions or concerns." Admittedly I am too easygoing and didn't want to seem impatient so I waited. And waited. Three weeks later I called the number I was given for the Coordinator. First off there was a LONG intro message that kept repeating that the process takes time because of the insurance company, patience is required, don't keep calling about a surgery date, and please expect 3-4 days for a call back - is this normal? An…

  48. Started by camilleweiz,

Hi everyone, I’m having surgery in a few days and getting everything ready around the house. Does anyone have any foods that were staples/favorites for the liquid stage post surgery? Are the any other prep or comfort related items you were glad to have or wish you had had? Also does anyone have recommendations for multivitamin brands they like, I’m looking for a once a day one.
