Here's a weird one. I often heard after getting WLS, that alcohol can be this really slippery slope and transfer addiction is real. It's funny because I was simultaneously worried and not worried at the same time because alcoholism runs in my family and I've seen it ugly, up close and personal which has made me incredibly reflective on my alcohol use, always checking it and monitoring to make sure it wasn't something I was doing out of habit and only in moderation. Basically, I've never been really into alcohol but don't get me wrong, I had my party days in college and I remember being able to drink soooooo much for a long time when I was partying with friends. …

Hello all! I've had my RNY on May 17,2023. I've been having nausea after eating anything that's not soft like yogurt, baby food, or eggs. I'm now on the soft chopped portion of my plan. Is it normal to be nauseous after eating things such as moist chicken, beans at this point? I've also had quite a bit of constipation and struggling to get water in. Please give me any tips or advice! Thanks!

I have finally been diagnosed with Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR)/Silent Reflux with my ENT Specialist about 3 weeks ago after suffering from a lump in my throat and tightness in throat which results in somewhat difficulty breathing. I have been having these symptoms for at least the past 4 months. I had visited at least 6-7 medical professionals (none of whom knew why I was suffering from these issues) before finally being diagnosed with Silent Reflux (difficult to diagnose). It is different to GERD (normal reflux) in that I do not have the classical reflux symptoms of heart burn, indigestion etc. I even had a gastroscopy (camera down my esophagus) to confirm it is…

Ughhhh how do you deal with fat shaming post op? I was standing outside and a car drove by and screamed at me "what are you a linebacker?!" In front of a bunch of people. We ignored it but it hurt pretty bad.. I feel so embarrassed and ashamed of myself. I have so much self hatred that I'm trying to undo. I've lost a good amount of weight but I'm still big and very tall...feel so unfeminine. I'm trying so hard to not let this get to me But I'm hurt. It felt like high school bullying. I'm wondering when ill reach the low 200s so I'll look "normal". I feel like I'm in this weird physical transitionary state. Before my surgery it was like I felt like I had to prove someho…

Hello all, I'm 10 weeks out from RNY and overall doing pretty good. My problem is I can't plan my food menu because one day I'll like a food, like eggs, and the next day it repulses me. Can't stand the smell of it. I'm like this with almost everything I'm eating. I can NOT do shakes ever again. I tried again about a month ago and gagged and threw it out along with the damn shaker bottle. Same with soups and broths. Can't even look at them. ONe day I'll do good with chicken and the next it sickens me. I'm often hungry, but eating makes me feel like crap. I enjoy nothing. I eat slow and don't eat until I am too full, so it's not like I'm overeating and getting sick from a f…

Hi all! I'm coming up on my three month anniversary tomorrow, and curious to know if it's normal to start experiencing hunger pains? Also, when I eat I almost immediately get nauseous. Keep in mind that I've not introduced new, foreign, or non-bariatric foods either. I'm perplexed at best and hoping its just a temporary thing. Curious to know if anyone else has gone through this, or something similar. Thanks!

Officially 7 days post gastric bypass ? I'm feeling very well aside from incision tenderness. What concerns me though is that I can drink a 16oz Gatorade in under an 1hr with no issues. Is that normal? or safe??

Hi, just signed up, didn't see an "introducing yourself" section. Have had various gastro related issues for the last couple years, found that I did not tolerate the PPI well, but have Barrett's Esophagus, which has to be addressed. Since I gained a fair amount of weight during Covid, looks like I qualify for bypass surgery which is a recommended approach to dealing with the Barrett's. I'm still going through various qualifying phases, but the surgeon/hospital here seem to know the drill. Still need to get my cardio doc to sign off and to see my primary. At this point in my life, near 70 years old, having been reduced to the Fodmap diet to minimize GERD (acid reflux)…

I had gastric bypass 4/19 and hit my first stall. I know this happens and was prepared by my medical team to expect it but I’m still worried. My personal experience has been SO easy, I’m almost worried this is the other shoe to drop, so to speak, and 20lbs is all I’ll lose after surgery. Thoughts?

Hello everyone! I'm just over 3 months out of my gastric bypass surgery and I'm struggling A LOT with belching and it's constant all day every day, if its an especially bad day it makes me end up heaving and trying to be sick (cant vomit since surgery, just plenty of dry heaving) I'm also still having bad diarrhea every day and have basically every day since the surgery, dieticians say dumping but even when I was just on liquids or hardly eating its the same result! I've done a stool sample and no bugs to be found. I have been meaning to increase my fibre but I haven't actually done it yet because I've been fairly poorly either liver problems at the same time and I'…

Hi everyone, I am considering gastric bypass surgery and have narrowed the surgeon selection to Dr Kevin Krause affiliated with Beaumont Royal Oak Michigan and Dr John Pilcher affiliated with Sage Bariatric in Texas. would really appreciate if those who have had their surgery done by either of these doctors provide input on their experience and if they would recommend the doctors and their teams. Working on making the best decision so looking forward to hearing from some of you.

Hi - I’m Phil. I’m 54 yrs old and had a gastric bypass in 2011. I weighed close to 400lbs at the start of the journey and am currently 174lbs to I deem the process as a success. I have in recent years though developed a chronic weakness in my muscles - mainly legs, shoulders etc (I also have a heartbeat issue). I walk with a waddle and struggle to get up from a sitting position and struggle with stairs etc. I have had many tests including MRI (x 2), nerve conduction tests, many different blood tests and finally this week, a muscle biopsy. My neurologist cannot diagnose the issue - the biopsy is the last attempt. We met recently and he has now said tha…

I take a psychiatric drug and I feel like it may not be working as well as it was pre- surgery. It's not extended release! The surgeon says that it shouldn't be a problem, but I wonder if this is in "theory".... anyone have a similar experience in reality?

I don't enjoy eating anymore. The only thing I can seem to eat or even taste is Campbell's Vegetable soup. I am not keeping up with my vitamins. I weigh around 180lbs, down from 303. I don't regret getting my bypass but I thought I'd be at a different place.

Hi there has anyone experienced elevated B12 levels and AST and Alt at the 2 year follow up appt? Just curious now if any of these are due to the surgery I’ve never had issues before my B12 levels are now at 3000! I did not get any feedback on these issues and honestly felt like the support at my 2yr follow up appt just wasn’t there..it felt very rushed which wasn’t my experience at my one year appt. I’m curious if any others have encountered this issue with your postop visits. I appreciate everyone’s feedback!

Hey guys thanks all for taking the time . So I was curious as to if anybody else has experienced low pulse after gastric bypass? prior to gastric bypass (sep 2022) I had no issues with my pulse however recently I have had low pulses reading at 40-55 now I don’t have any other symptoms yes maybe a bit more tired but that’s all. However my wife got the gastric done April of this year and she is having the same issues however with her she has actually passed out and felt nauseous and basically like she’s drunk without drinking .. curious if anyone else has experienced the same …

Hi guys - I’m just shy of 6mos out from Gastric Bypass and have a question on portion sizes. Any idea what the portion sizes or ounces one should be eating at 6mos out? Grant it there are some days when I can have more than others but is there an estimate? Sometimes I feel like I’m eating too much. Meaning, the food goes down fine but 15mins later my stomach is super full. I’m thinking if I base it on ounces then I wouldn’t have this issue and maybe a better stopping point. Let me know your thoughts - thanks

So I'm almost 2 yrs post RNY. I'm constantly pooping no matter what I eat. I was told it was normal because it started right after surgery but it will not go away. Have any of you experienced anything like this? It's not diarrhea, but I go several times a day. I don't eat beef, pork or fried foods, nor any other greasy food. I'm wondering if it's IBS or EPI. I'll be calling my Dr. Monday, I'm sure I need to see a GI Dr.

My rny was May 1st, and I've lost 15lbs since surgery (30 since the start of pre-op diet). I just feel like 15 lbs is low. It's an average of less than a pound a day. I've already stalled once at about 2 weeks out. I'm just looking for some guidance. Thanks.

It's done! I made it through surgery day and boy what a time it was.... 6 incisions and plenty meds. Gas in the back pain. Nausea. and more tenderness Struggling to get 64oz of fluid in but I think my game plan is to segment the day in 3-4 parts. I've already noticed I definitely have to force myself to walk and sip

I started my journey in December and I am less then 3 weeks until my surgery date. My program requires you to lose a certain percentage of body weight before surgery. My surgery goal was 21 pounds and so far I’ve been able to lose 43. Now I’m so close to surgery day and I have this overwhelming desire to eat all my favorite crappy foods one last time. Yes I know eventually down the road you can indulge from time to time. I realize that it’s not like I will never get to eat pizza ever again. I also really want to lose another 7 pounds to hit 50 before surgery. 50 pounds before surgery was a personal goal I had set for myself. I need a way to shut off the part of my brain t…

I had surgery April 27th (9 days ago) I am drinking 64 ozs of fluids a day and now up to 1 cup of broth once a day. I am struggling to reach my protein intake though. My question is should I be feeling full or anything when I drink water or the broth? I don't have any feelings of being full at all almost like my stomach is the same. I can drink a 10 Oz bottle of water in 20 mins and take normal drinks not sips. I am still in excruciating pain on my left side when I move sit up or walk. It feels like I'm being stabbed and someone is ripping through my stomach on that side is that normal?

I am today officially 3 weeks post op RNY. My first week of healing was a bit uncomfortable, but by the end I was much better and could move around more. Week 2 I started to feel some tugging on my right side kind of away from the immediate incision area. I mentioned it to my surgeon at my 2 week visit and he said it is likely because 2 of the incisions are sewn to muscle and did not seem concerned. Well 4-5 days later, not only is that part in an awful state of pain, but the 3rd incision site (internally) also feeling similar. It’s not a constant pain, but brought on by movement. It started as some movement like bending, but now is with nearly anything. (Showering is tor…

So, today It's been officially one year since my surgery. Yay! I am very happy about how much I lost. I started at 264 and am now at 154 and still want to lose a little bit more so my doctor can refer me to plastics. It's slow going but it's going. I wasn't sure what I was going to write but decided to just go with how I was feeling. One of things I love is I'm much smaller and have more energy but I am also a bit resentful. Bigger people aren't taken seriously sometimes by doctors. I complained of chest pain before the weight loss and was told your blood pressure is too high. Now that I am smaller I was told well that shouldn't be happening and got a CT scan d…

I’m just curious to see if I’m going crazy or if this is normal. I’m about 5.5 weeks post op and notice I’m losing inches everywhere except my right arm. It happens to be my dominant arm. Did anyone experience places where inches came off slower in places but eventually catch up? Or am I going to end up with one big arm and one small arm for the remainder of this journey?

Hey friends! I haven’t been around in a while…well, I’m going to be back now…as I feel like this community has been extremely helpful and supportive in the past, and I need to be here. I NEED it. So I had my surgery on December 30, 2020. I lost about 110 pounds from my highest (308 to 198, surgery day I was 289). I am currently 227.9, but I regained to 235.2. I know what to do, kinda. Log my food, eat my protein first, then veggies, then carby-carbs (what I call things like bread, potatoes, pasta, etc), move my body… However on Tuesday my hip subluxed (partial dislocation) while I was making a delivery for my job (I’m a home baker)… I kicked the curb with my foo…

I’m at a loss and not a good one. I’m 2 months post-op and the scale has not moved in 4 or 5 weeks. I’m back in the gym (competitive lifter) but not lifting heavy (130lb deadlift to start). I will admit that my diet can use some work. I’ve been under some extreme stress from work and a have not been sleeping well. I want to cry everytime I hop on the scale hoping for some movement only to be stuck in the same 2-3 lb range. My surgeon hopes for more weight loss during my 1 month appointment so I can’t even imagine what she will say when I go back in 4 weeks. I just don’t know what to do.

Has anyone experienced thyroid issues after your surgery? My surgery was on 12/2. For the past two weeks it feels like my thyroid is about to jump out my neck. I didn’t realize what it was until first thinking it was my heart rate. But after getting that checked it was on. However, I was sleep the other night and I kept feeling like something was beating quickly then noticed it was my thyroid. I didn’t take my thyroid medicine today. I was thinking it may need to be adjusted. I will also call my doctor to schedule an appt and I have a blood test that he ordered when I went to see him last week and the thyroid function test is a part of that. Anybody exper…

Good morning, I am 4 months post RNY. I can usually eat about 800-1000 calories a day. My mind and heart are fighting because I know I am not overeating (I also work out almost everyday) but my weight is fluctuating up and down with no real loss for a few weeks. Could I be stalling at 4 months? My head knows the answer but my heart needs confirmation. Thanks!

Hello everyone I had my gastric bypass on 22nd February 2023 and although I am super thankful that I have lost weight, I am constantly worried I will not lose enough. One of the reasons I opted for the bypass (although there are other reasons) is because I do not have any children and I have unfortunately been diagnosed with premature ovarian failure and told that the only way I will possibly conceive is IVF, but I cannot get IVF on the NHS unless my weight is below 30 BMI. Some clinics do offer slightly higher BMIs (around 35) but they are all private and unfortunately I cannot afford to pay privately. For reference I am 5ft 5inches. I feel my weight lo…

A little backstory: I had a sleeve back in 2015. I went from 450 to 190. I kept it off for 5 years. Enter pandemic, job loss, and alcohol abuse. I gained 130 of the 240 back. My little sleeved stomach also grew and I was eating full size meals again and I developed severe GERD and a hiatal hernia. My esophagus was constantly sitting in acid and was scarring and narrowing and the hernia was so bad, food and pills were constantly getting stuck. Fast forward to the present, I had a revision to a gastric bypass to fix the GERD and hernia. Those things have been 100% resolved (thank goodness), but the weight hasn’t been flying off like it did with my sleeve. …

Hi all! I had my RNY 15 days ago. I'll be 55 years old next month. I'm 5'4 and my top weight was 248. Pre op I was 231 (lost weight with pre-op diet hell). Currently sitting at 222 lbs. Still on Full Liquid stage with starting the Pureed on 4/19. No real hunger pangs at all, just weakish. Weighing myself just once a week. I've always been hard on myself, so weighing once a week, I think, will keep things more in perspective for me. I'm down 9 lbs since surgery and trying hard not to tell myself it should be more! I'm Feeling pretty good. Was REALLY sore for that first week, but feeling more comfortable every day. I'm just bummed about the lack of energy I still feel. I ca…

Hi y'all! My name is Ashley and I am almost 4 weeks out from my surgery date. I had RNY and Hernia repair done on March 28th. I'm so glad i have not had any issues and only gotten sick once. I did have to make myself through up do to the pain of eating little to much. So I was wondering, how soon did you see a difference or any changes in your PCOS symptoms. I just started my first cycle yesterday and beforehand I went almost a year without one. I do plan on going on birth control Monday. Also I want to try again in a year to get pregnant since we haven't been successful in trying for 10 years. So another question is has anybody been able to get pregnant after surgery and…

hello - I have been stalled since 3/23. My dietician wants me to up my calories. I am currently getting between 800-100 and she wants me at 1200-1500 a day. I have no idea how to add in another 300+/- calories that are not junk food. I eat 5x a day, plus one shake. I keep my carbs under 75 a day (under 20 per meal), fat under 60 (under 10 per meal), and sugar less than 25 for whole day, and avoid unneeded sugar (eg, sugar in milk or yogurt okay, but not sugar in skittles) I also get well over 100 g of protien a day.
