Gastric bypass (RNY) support. Ask about the procedure, dumping syndrome, the bypass diet, nutrition, weight loss, and complications.

  1. Started by Nyx,

I had gastric bypass about 4 years ago. I've lost 200 lb and I want my excess skin around my belly removed but I haven't had any children and honestly I plan on doing so if I find the other half but I waited almost a year to see the plastic surgeon. I get there and they tell me they can help me and I'm so excited that I can finally be done with this irritation. I don't want this done because I want a flat belly I'm tired of being itchy and sweaty and uncomfortable all the time that's why I want it done but they told me I had time to think about whether I wanted the fleur-de-lis or if I wanted the regular procedure done. I wasn't sure so they told me I could check online. …

  3. Hello! This is my first post on this Forum about that and maybe you can give me some insight. i'm 3 weeks post op from Germany and i have a RNY-Bypass i'm okay so far no pain enough fluid struggle with food which is normal this early i guess. the Question i really have, i use to watch a lot of youtubers for meal plans and "how my future could look" and most of them just say "i did have a bypass" but not specifically which one, i once heard that the RNY bypass will always have way smaller portions than the Omega-sleeve and i'd like to ask if thats True and i'm also very Intrested to hear how your Portionsizes are after lets say, 3 year Post op. thanks and h…

Hello, I had my RNY surgery on the 27th. I am in some pain which I know is normal I was wondering ,is it normal to have pain when food is going through your digestive system? I have the gas or food moving every time I eat I use the bathroom. I also have not stopped having dark diarrhea. I'm scared to eat pureed food as of yet since my plan says I can start the day I get home from the hospital. Has anyone experience this? I'm so nervous about having a bowl obstruction or bleeding that can become serious. My surgeon says to monitor it but I'm scared. I don't have the best insurance if I need ER visits. Thank you for reading.

  6. At 3 months P.O., my doctor took me off the acid reducer (omperazole, Prilosec, PPI). About a week later I developed horrible upper stomach pain, gagging, belching, feeling like I wanted to throw up and nausea. I thought it was something I ate but found out that if you are on these acid reducers for more than 4 weeks it can cause a re-bound effect when you stop the meds and cause the stomach to OVER-produce stomach acid causing you stomach pain or acid reflux symptoms. I did not know to expect this this prior to surgery and wanted to share in case anyone else developed these symptoms after they stop an acid reducer. I have a note into my doct…

I've used this forum so far to ask questions, and obviously, people who are trying to adjust figure out if their experience is "normal" or have some issue with the process, and are going to ask questions-- some posts/threads document the challenges to this "adjustment." I thought it might be valuable to lay out the positives. I don't much care how you got to the surgery point- whether by some unhealthy attachment to eating or anything else. But for whatever reasons we underwent surgery, I'll assume that the path we were on was not healthy and beyond that, our quality of life was compromised by weight. So, I'll say-- after 3 months, X weeks, I'm far more …

  11. Hello all! Newbie here! I had gastric bypass surgery on August 8. Since then, I have not been able to meet my fluid or protein requirements, or even get close honestly. My Dr and dietitian just say "well, you have to." I'm still feeling weak and tired and just want to feel better! Does anyone have any tips, tricks, recipes (I'm on stage 3) that might help?

    Started by Guest,

I’m 41 days out. I still can’t eat more than a couple of bites of anything. It’s really frustrating. I knew I would be restricted, but I didn’t realize how much. I wanted this surgery to help create a healthy relationship with food. One where I can be satisfied with normal portions. I also wanted to have a healthy diet full of vegetables so I could nourish my body like I feel God intended. Not with protein shakes that make me nauseous . I’m really feeling like this wasn’t the right choice for me because I’m feeling so distressed.

  13. Today was the 3 month anniversary of my bypass/hiatal hernia repair. I've done ok on the calorie restricted diet--still can't eat certain meats (I've stayed away from steak which I love, haven't eaten lamb and even a moist pork chop is a little tough for me- instead, I'm eating. lot of fish). My portions are small-- -protein say three tablespoons, veggies, two tablespoons, mashed or sweet potato- 1/2 a small sized one. Today I weighed myself- I went from over 271 to 221 which is kind of crazy! (I am around 6 feet, used to be taller but I'm a geezer so I'm shrinking). Hooked up at a new gym that I can walk to from my house, so I will go more frequently and won't …

Tomorrow will be my 1 year anniversary since my gastric bypass surgery. I have lost 86 pounds. I’m not going to lie, I honestly thought I would have lost more by now. Although weight loss has slowed down tremendously, I have yet to see a gain on the scale so I take that as a win. I would like to lose at least another 50 pounds so I have to remember this surgery is not a cure-all, it’s simply a tool. I’ve been extremely lucky and have had no complications whatsoever. I don’t experience dumping syndrome at all (well I did once when I ate some ice cream and have steered clear ever since) but other than that there really isn’t anything I can’t eat, I just eat a whole lot le…

  15. I'm 7+ weeks post-op from Gastric Bypass/RNY. I have zero appetite. I've spent over a month in the hospital because of infections, dehydration, etc. Since I wasn't getting results from the surgeon's facility post op, I decided to see my PCP for help. Best decision! Small changes (doubling my nausea meds, etc.). I may even receive IV fluids when necessary, maybe even from home, if possible. I realize the part of my stomach that communicates with the brain has been removed. I don't see an end in sight. I was told by nurses at the hospital that this aversion to food and drink is not unusual; for some it lasts months, or even years (I'm going on 8 weeks). It sounds like…

I know this may be a dumb question, but when will swallowing normally (not tiny sips) feel normal again? Any liquids are mostly fine, but I tried some stewed green beans and there was discomfort even with over chewing them. I’m 19 days post op and I’m struggling. But this is the decision I made, so I have no choice but to live with it. I’m taking my meds/vitamins and doing my best to get my protein and water in. Will swallowing ever feel normal again? Will I ever eat normally again? I’m still on soft foods but mainly sticking to protein shakes and broth. Thanks for taking the time to read and any info is appreciated. ?

Hey everyone. Question for those greater than 8mos out. Is there a stall period with Gastric Bypass before your 12-18mos window of opportunity or was weight loss consistent with a slowing down period? I’m 8mos out and the weightloss has slowed down. I’m actually happy at this weight, 70lb loss and 5’11. But wondering if I should expect more weightloss through the 12mos period? My surgeon stated that he expected me to be around 205-220 as a good weight. I’m currently at 222. Any information is appreciated

  18. Started by LindsayT,

How soon after surgery did the weight loss start slowing down? I'm 4 months post-op, and things are slowing quite a bit. For the last 3 weeks, I'm at roughly 2 lbs lost per week. I just feel at 4 months it's too soon. I still have about 30lbs left to goal and I'm getting antsy to get there. Though, I'm down 71 lbs since the start of the preop diet and am very happy with the way things are going. I'm just curious if the slow down at this point in normal.

  19. Started by LindsayT,

Ever since last night after dinner, every time I eat solid food, my stomach gurgles for about 30-60 minutes, and I get a bit nauseous. Then, this morning (sorry TMI), I had a massive BM and severe painful cramping during. Thankfully, that went away after I finished in the restroom. The only thing that has changed is that I started an antibiotic Thursday and stopped the omeprazole on Wednesday. I have had very minimal issues since surgery or had any major food intolerance. Any insights? Could it be the antibiotic or not taking the PPI? Thanks!

Hi everyone, I’m new here & hope ur all doing well. I had gastric bypass on 8/15. I did well overall. I had never been under general so that was a bit off putting when it was hard to take deep breaths after. They jumped me right into stage 2 and sent me home the next day. I’ve been meeting my fluid goals and doing mostly ok on my foods bc I’m good about eating super slow. I had a couple of unpleasant experiences. One was dehydration bc I took an extended shower and I must have missed my timer-that was scary. The other was that my husband measured the baby food a little over 1/4 and I felt overly full. ffwd to today. I was excited to begin stage 3 since I’d b…

  22. Hello all. I am nearly 13 weeks post RNY. I am eating all kinds of modified regular foods, so overall I don’t have a problem meeting my protein goals. I still have a protein shake daily - however it is because it’s the easiest way to get a huge dose of protein in with my morning coffee. I’ve never been one to eat solid foods so early in the morning. I make proffees and while it was a bit of an adjustment to my regular cup of coffee, I am so used to it now. My preferred protein shake of choice to use is the Fairlife Core Power Vanilla shake as I can use it both cold and heated depending on whether I want hot or iced coffee. I mix it up a bit and also have the Fairlif…

I chose the gastric bypass because I'm pre diabetic my surgeon said this would suit me better, I'm a little worried of malnutrition, I know I will be on Vitamins for the rest of my life, can I live a healthy life style with the bypass?

I had RNY and paraesophageal hernia repair on 6/12/23, Recovery has gone well as well as weight loss but I find that my exhaustion is overwhelming. I contacted my surgeon they suggested contacting my GP, She said she's certain it's just recovery. She didn't take any labs. Is there anyone else that has been dealing with this? And if so how do you get around the exhaustion?

  27. Started by MsTeeTee,

How long did some of you stay on liquids even though you were cleared to eat food? I’m having some food aversion and just wanted to see what other liquids to try. I want to try oatmeal smoothies maybe try a protein shake with spinach or another vegetable? Just to mix it up a bit. Like a banana premiere and cooked carrots? Or a banana premiere and some spinach/blueberries.

I’m almost a month out. I can’t eat more than couple of bites of anything. This makes me feel like cooking is pointless so I’ve just been sticking to shakes. Which are starting to make me nauseous. I’m getting frustrated again. Ugh.

  29. Started by Elsiez,

Hey All, I’m 12 weeks post gastric bypass and for the last couple of weeks have had gray/pale stools ? Not sure if it’s because I’m trying to give lots of new foods a go or something else. I had my gallbladder removed years ago and I’ve not got any pain or jaundice so I’m a bit confused! I’m waiting to hear back from my surgeon but just wondered if anyone else had experienced this?

  30. Started by alphacat68,

I'm almost 3 weeks post-op and have only lost 6 pounds. I'm down a clothing size and halved my blood pressure medicine dose, cut my insulin by 2/3, and have been taken off one diabetes medication. I'm thrilled with that progress but admittedly a little bummed with the scale number not going down much. My surgeon looked at my tracking and said I'm doing everything right and to be patient and not worry about it. I know this is true but it's still disappointing comparatively when I read of significant losses by other bypass patients. I am happy for them though. Anyone else have this experience?

  31. Started by MsTeeTee,

After RNY gastric bypass surgery, when was real oatmeal ok? Nothing against cream of wheat or watery oatmeal but I’m not doing very good with anything else. I’m having major food aversions. Day 29 post op. Week 5. Any

  32. Started by BabySpoons,

I bought a watermelon at the Farmers market but it's not seedless. I cut and cubed half of it and it's chilling in the fridge. I love cold melon after my daily walk to help me rehydrate. Cantaloupe is another. I spit most of the seeds out, but I missed a few. I know this would be a big no no early on before my stomach healed and risk one getting stuck in my incision line. At almost 5 months is this a potential problem blocking my anastomosis or will those seeds pass on through?

I was wondering what your portion sizes look like if you’re 6 months or longer out of surgery. Are you able to go to dinner with friends? How is your life affected by food now?

  34. Hi everyone. I'm still looking for new vitamins, especially chewable (no soft gel). Is it me, or are these bariatric vitamin brands super weak? Fusion, ProCare, etc. have low amounts of vitamin B's, etc. I've always invested in high quality vitamins (Brain MD, others). The vitamins recommended by Cleveland Clinic even recommend a good amount of vitamin nutrients, but I don't find them in these bariatric brands. I realize I'd need to take numerous amounts of vitamins/day, but I'd have to take more than 10 multivitamins in these brands. Thoughts?

  35. Started by MsTeeTee,

When did you guys start taking your multivitamins post op? I already have BariLife one a day with iron and the Bariatric Fusion 4 a day chewable ones now. But I don’t recall when they told me to start taking these exactly. Maybe I’m having brain fog. But I do take the Bcomplex everyday.

  36. Started by MsTeeTee,

I have no desire for food or beverages at this time. I have 3 days left in my purée stage and I can only tolerate my Bcomplex vitamin for the day. Everything else just looks gross. Even the smell of food does not smell good to me anymore. Any ideas friends? Am I the only one?

  37. Started by MsTeeTee,

Hello. I am 2 1/2 weeks post op. It's been a rough couple of weeks - severe allergic reaction on abdomen and a bad UTI. But I really didn't expect to have almost constant heartburn. I might have expected it with a sleeve, but this is horrible. Anyone else have persistent heartburn with gastric BYPASS? What have you done for it?

  40. Started by MasonMoonGirl,

Good morning everyone ? My QOTD today is did anyone develop any food aversions after surgery? Any foods you used to like that now you can't stand? Seafood is already off limits for me so I'm hoping chicken or beef don't become one for me!

  41. Started by AmandaElder,

Hello everyone. New to BP and the forums. Just had my surgery on 7.31.23 - conversion to bypass. Had my original sleeve surgery 7 years ago and was able to convert to bypass because the GERD was so horrible for several years! how is everyone doing! Any surgery friends also in July?

  42. Started by MsTeeTee,

My 1st post op appointment went great. I got to ask all my questions. He gave me answers with no attitude. Very attentive. Freaking love my doctor. I’m cleared to go back to work, chew gum, drink from a straw, exercise a lil more and go to the chiropractor! Still liquid phase for a few more days. Then semi soft, soft, firm, and then real food. Im so excited. And Im also 17 lbs down 11 days post op. ??

  43. I had my two month anniversary, and second post op exam/meeting. Bloods good, I lost 35 lbs so far, but one of the drivers for me was Barrett's and the GERD I was experiencing is largely gone. I still take an H2 blocker as a precaution and got cleared for real exercise, not just walking. (Had a hiatal hernia that got repaired). I gotta say, having done this, I couldn't be happier. Yes, I'm still trying to draw lines but the surgeon said to measure portions, even though his dietitian does not address portion size. I think it is important to have resources as you go through this, not just for support, but for info. I consider this such a place. I'm far more m…

  47. Started by MsTeeTee,

So yesterday I decided to start taking walks at the park and I love it. Before I couldn’t stand it because I would be in so much pain now I can actually enjoy it. Walking around the house in door and out door errands wasn’t enough for me anymore and my MD cleared me btw. I start puréed food tomorrow and I can’t freaking wait. I’m so excited. Lol 21lbs down since 7/24/23 rny gastric bypass. Quick question* What are some things you guys did when you first started back exercising besides walking and what really worked best for you? Is it normal to get a gagging feeling when exercising to hard or too much? Almost like nausea but not actually going all the way?

Hi! I had my surgery in September last year and have lost 69 pounds, but my weight hasn't budged since February! Its frustrating. The last 3 months, I have been struggling with fatigue and have been sick off and on due to my autoimmune disease, so I haven't had the energy to workout. But somehow, I have been losing inches because I'm fitting into smaller sized clothes. How is this possible? Has anyone had this experience of losing inches, but not weight without working out? And any advice on how to break this plateau is greatly appreciated!

I am 17 days post RNY surgery. Tired of protein shakes. Feel like my nutritionist and doctors expect me to figure out what to eat. Usually get so hungry I wolf down food. Need help on safe snacks and cookbooks to guide me. I eat too much, burp excessively. I don’t want to stretch out stomach. Please help.

I've been reading posts on this site for months pre-surgery and wish to thank you for all the support you've given to gastric surgery patients. I had gastric bypass done August 3 and other than uncomfortable gas, I've had a great experience. I came home on the 4th. Starting just before discharge I began passing blood clots. Dark purple. Doctors said it's eliminating blood from the surgery. They said it's okay and approved my discharge That makes sense but I don't remember reading about post-op bleeding on any posts. Did anyone else have this? I'm not pale and I have energy. Hopefully it will run it's course soon.
