Good morning everyone ?

My QOTD today is did anyone develop any food aversions after surgery? Any foods you used to like that now you can't stand? Seafood is already off limits for me so I'm hoping chicken or beef don't become one for me!

I bought all of most of those things as well. I also added a flavorless Protein Powder to add to the chicken/beef broth. You can also add it to pudding, oatmeal, or other soft foods. The one thing I did learn was to slowly incorporate the Protein with a whisk and the broth can't be too hot. Otherwise, the protein powder becomes denatured. It gets clumpy and weird. Soooo in my soup yesterday I dumped the protein powder into the soup when it was ready all at once and it was a big clumpy disgusting mess ?? I remembered you wrote this to incorporate slowly and damn was that right haha. Do you cook the entire soup first and then put the protein in little by little once it's in your bowl of soup or do you stir it in while cooking? I was so hungry I just dumped a huge scoop in my bowl of soup when it was done and steaming hot and it was so nasty I basically chewed my soup ??

I would use a whisk (or you could use a fork) to slowly mix it in once it was in my bowl. The problem is that it cools the food off, but if it's too hot, the protein becomes denatured and it just doesn't work.

You can also put the protein powders into a bit of room temperature water to dissolve it first. Then whisk it slowly into whatever broth or hot food/drink after it’s dissolved. This prevents the clumping and cooling your food down.

I am 10 weeks post op and I don’t know if this counts as a good aversion but right now everything I eat tates horrible. I have been cleared to eat just about whatever I want but I can only tolerate fruit, a few tortilla chips and sugar free popsicles. Does anyone have any tips on restoring my taste buds?

Used to love burgers, milkshakes, fried tofu, and coconut milk curries. Now they're much too rich and can't stand them. They started tasting bad but I think it's cause I associate them with feeling nauseous. I also can't eat butter, biscuits (American ones), and honey. Bananas too I have a post op aversion to. Also can't eat raw bell peppers. Idk why something about them being sweet and watery now is a no go.

Weirdly got a taste for beans after surgery too.

hahaha. I still love pictures of burgers, but the thought of biting one terrifies me. I truly am just in search of anything I can tolerate. I’m super early in this journey but I’ve lost over 40 pounds since the surgery and most of the time I just feel weak. Hope to find some resolution soon. Thanks so much for the response, this was my first post.

I like tuna, but I don't like it as much anymore.

I liked tacos, but I also don't like that anymore either.

I don't like the taste of creamy corn now. But it could have been something I was eating with it.

I used to like the frozen meatballs, not anymore.

I used to also like coffee, now it tastes bitter no matter how much sugar substitute I put in it and that's how I always did my coffee

One month post op here, I've just started the soft food phase and it turns out that a lot of meat, especially chicken is really heavy on my stomach. I don't get dumping syndrome but it is such a pain to digest

Generally the food aversions are temporary & related to changes in your tastebuds & sense of smell post surgery often because of the anaesthetic.

Apart from the general aversion to anything even remotely sweet, all the shakes were disgusting to me. The sweetness & the hideous grainy texture coating my teeth. Shudder! The weirdest one was vegetables. I love my vegetables & was so looking forward to the first time I could eat asparagus & sugar snap peas again but nope. Awful. Super pleased when they were palatable again. They were really the only things.

Weirdest one was smoked salmon. Always found it that bit too rich & strong a flavour so could only eat a little. Gave it a try after surgery & it was fine. Ate it without an issue with some cream cheese wrapped around a wedge of cucumber. ??‍♀️ But about two months later, it was back to being thanks no thanks.

Oh, I made chicken cacciatore while on soft foods and of course added about half of the requisite white wine. Bad move. The wine tasted sour (it wasn’t) & flavoured the whole dish. I couldn’t eat it though my mother said it was delicious.

I love pizza and burgers now I wonder if I will hate them soon, hopefully! ?
