My sugar is dropping. Dangerously low. Hard to keep it up without actually eating sugar. What are my REALISTIC option’s please.

Are you a type 2 diabetic on medication? If so you may need to talk to your doctor about changing your dose or stopping your meds. This can often happen after surgery pretty quickly. Are you still in the hospital? If so they should be able to help with this...

I’m not pre diabetic but I would suck on a mint when this would happen.
I’m over 5 years out & this only happened during the 1st year.

@ChunkCat I was told to take my ozempic shot. And now I don’t feel like that was the best idea. And that was from a medical professional. Not a googled question.

My last shot of insulin was in my pre-diet phase. My sugar dropped like a stone after. I actually ended up back in the hospital two weeks after surgery with starvation ketoacidosis. My doctor said I was following the post surgery diet to strictly(all protein) and I needed to add back in a few healthy carbs here and there to keep my insulin level steady.

I think that shot you took was a mistake. Until it clears, you will need carbs to keep your sugar up. After that, monitor your levels and adjust diet as required.

Of course, all of this should be checked by your doctor and his team.

This is something you need to discuss with your doctor ASAP.

@Fred in Pa wow that’s crazy. I’m glad you made it thru. I have a Dexcom on. But I guess my glucose was dropping to rapidly it couldn’t catch up. It was off by 10 high or low every time they checked it. I’m going to ask for mints or maybe glucose candy just in case it drops again. I will make sure I ask my doctor. Thanks

I was on 3 diabetes meds pre surgery. My surgeon told me to stop them once I had the surgery. And I'm glad I did. My A1c pre surgery was 7.6 and my average blood sugar level was 163. Within a month after the surgery, my blood sugar level was averaging 145 and by 3 months out, I was averaging 105. At my 6 months post op appt, my blood work showed my A1c at 5.7 and has stayed between 5.5 and 5.7 ever since and my blood sugar levels tend to stay around 100-105. So definitely do not take the Ozempic anymore. If they really want you on something (not sure why at this point) try Metformin or something much more mild.

@SleeveToBypass2023 wow. That is truly amazing. I fussed so much about getting my ozempic shot back because the pill version had my A1c on a roller coaster. Now I can’t even take it anymore. Lol I’m just going to accept everything gracefully. Thanks for your advice and sharing your story

No problem at all!! Maybe reach out and see if they can put you on Metformin or something (that's also been known to have mild weight loss properties) and gradually ease your way off it, if your diabetes is bad enough to still need a little something right now. But definitely stay off Ozempic.

I’ve tried Metformin in the past and almost went to the hospital from the stomach pain. It was horrendous. But I’m sure they will find something to put me on. Thanks again dear. I appreciate it.

I'm not surprised, I feel like sometimes practitioners auto-pilot their responses instead of thinking them through for the individual! I hope the Ozempic wears off quickly so your lows stop. I get awful lows (and stomach pains) from Metformin so I can sympathize, hypoglycemia that is medication induced can be so miserable. I really don't know how non-diabetics take Ozempic for weight loss, you'd think they'd be battling the hypoglycemia all the time! But every body is different... Hope you feel better soon! I'll have to remember this for my surgery and talk with the doctor ahead of time because I'm on Ozempic and it keeps my A1C in the 5s...

I have an update. So I went to to the hospital yesterday because my Dexcom kept screaming at me that my glucose was 40 and under. I was told to drink apple juice but it only allowed it to go back up for 5-10 minutes and dropped again. And also gave me the dumps. I was so scared and frustrated that I called my Doctor but I could only leave a message. I was already at the hospital by the time I got a response so I continued to the hospital. My doc said to drink diluted protein shakes only at this time for hydration. The hospital told me something is wrong with my Dexcom and that I should either replace it or do manual glucose checks. Personally I’ve never had my Dexcom go crazy like that. Ever. And I’ve worn it for almost 2yrs now. This is the first time it’s done it and it just so happened to be immediately after my surgery. So of course I’m going to trust my Dexcom. During the hospital visit the alarm went off 3 more times and then it stopped and gave me a better reading between 70-120. The hospital also gave me apple juice to drink but i barely sipped it because I didn’t want the dumps to come back. My glucose was still stable so after all of that and I was discharged. I’m back home I feel fine. My glucose is finally holding.

Wow, that’s crazy. Good to hear it settled.

The only thing I can think is that it’s the sensor. Since the sensor goes in just under the skin, maybe your fluid level is affecting the draw up into the device? Post surgery, your bodies fluid level is all crazy…so maybe it’s bothering the sensor.

Another item. If I slept on my Dexcom the wrong way, it would pinch the sensor tube in my skin and I’d get false lows. So maybe with your fluid being wonky and such, it’s a combo of things?

Do you stick yourself to check your sugars with a regular strip when you get a low on the Dexcom? That should tell you if it’s off.

@Fred in Pa I had the manual meter until I got Dexcom. I’m going to have my primary care do a new prescription for me. I don’t have the funds to pay for it out of pocket anymore. But it does look like im going to have to go back to manual for a while to calibrate it more often.

@ChunkCat after my post op appointment my Bariatric doctor told me to only take my Ozempic if I stop losing weight.
