Hi there everyone~ I've been lurking around the forums for a bit, and decided it was probably time to actually introduce myself and get involved = ) I'm 28 years old (just had my birthday 2 weeks ago!) ~ been overweight and up and down my entire life. I stopped to think and I said to myself... I'm almost 30 years old, and I'm so incredibly unhealthy... how is this any way to live? My mother died from a heart attack at the age of 34, and I realized that I'm so close to being right there -- and I absolutely don't want to go the same route! So... here I am = ) This is actually a big week for me all-around: tomorrow I have upper GI x-rays, Thursday morning is my appoin…

well guys, today was my 1st time in the gym since having surgery. its been over 7 months! i took it easy & didnt go too too hard like im a body builder but i also didnt go too easy as to where i wasnt doing much. i have been in and out of gyms for about 8yrs now & i have NEVER sweat so much in my life. sweat was pouring down my face. i loved it! i also had a non scale victory! i usually do assisted pull ups because i have no upper body strength. for those of you who never used this machine, basically the more weight you add on to the machine, the easier it is & more assisted it is for you to do a pull up. you kinda have to climb up onto the machine. any…

I had my surgery on June 13. I immediately lost 20 lbs in the 1st 2 weeks. Then nothing. The weight then just fell off. I began to think that the surgery didn't work and I would be the exception for weight loss. Well I stopped weighing myself for the past week so that I'm not so disappointed! Well this morning I weighed in and I've lost 25 lbs in less then one month! I am so happy! Next week I am going to a Zumba class for the 1st time and I am stoked! Before I would be dreading it! I'm ready for my new life! Starting weight 278 Day of surgery 270 Today 245

Hi all. I just joined this site yesterday. Probably should have joined sooner. This is my first post. I'm scheduled for surgery, with Dr. Donald Hess at Boston Medical Center, in a little over 36 hours. It's been a 1 1/2 year journey to get from my first info session to this point. I've had lots of surgeries in the last few years - (double knee replacements, reconstruction on both thumb joints and - a prophylactic mastectomy - following successful surgery and treatment for breast cancer almost 18 years ago). This will be surgery number 7 in the last 4 years and I think this is the one, that has me the most anxious. Not necessarily the surgery, although that is kind of …

Did you tell everyone that you were having surgery and what it was for? My surgery is scheduled for June 28th. I haven't told very many people yet, but I'm wondering about what I should say when I get back to work after a week off. On one hand, I can see telling people so they can watch and hopefully encourage if they know what you're going through. On the other hand, the judging, oh the judging! So for those of you out there who have been through it, do you wish you had told more people or fewer? I'm excited, but starting to get nervous!

Today, July 13th, is the first day of my pre-op Liquid Protein diet. Made it through today with no problem. Well, maybe one little problem. I was'nt able to finish all the protein that I was supposed to consume today. I had 4 Protein drinks, which used up two pouches of the protein, but I still have one pouch left. I'll try something a bit different tomorrow and try to get it all in. My Dr. prescribed a medical grade protein that has all of the nutrients and Vitamins that you need on a daily basis, plus, if you drink it all you get 107gr. of protein. Seems like a lot, eh? The only solid food that I had today was 1 very small zucchini, 4 mushrooms, and 6 asparagus spea…

I am early into the process. Last Friday I hade my visit with the nurse practitioner and took the psych eval (I passes). Preop blood work was Saturday. Today I started my preop diet. Have to get cleared for anestesia by my general practitioner this Thursday. Looks like I will meet with the surgeon to schedule the big day (no pun intended). I'm a not too nervous about the procedure. Actually excited. What I am nervous about is that some technicality is gonna pull the floor out from under me.

Hey y'all! I'm new here... Just happened to stumble upon this app and I can't wait to check it all out. I've been looking for a post-surgery support group in my area, but can't make meetings with my work schedule. A little of my story: My name is Erin. I'm married, 24, and August 16 I will be 18 months post-op. I've had an unbelievable success story and am getting ready to speak at my surgeon's pre-op presentations. Although I've not had any complications due to my surgery, the emotional journey has been one heck of a roller coaster! Becoming an entirely different person at 22 is the scariest thing I've ever experienced. At that age most people are just beginning to fig…

Hello all! I am new to the forum and am trying to get as much information as possible. I am considering having the lap band surgery. I am right on the edge of being approved. My BMI is 35.1. Being diabetic puts me in the position of being a candidate for the surgery. To give you a little history, I'll tell you my "story". Almost 6 years ago I was prescribed a medication that destroyed my thyroid. At the time I was very healthy, working out 5-6 days a week. I gained 67lbs in less than 6 months. In the end, I topped out at 210. I am 5'2". Over the past 5.5 years I have tried just about everything possible to lose this weight. P90X, Zija... went to 2 dieticians. I managed …

I'm super excited but super nervous. Surgery is 7/23 and I think I am more scared about the liquid diet. Will I feel hungry? Will I succeed? I made a cream summer squash soup which turned out pretty good. Separated it into separate containers then froze some for when I need it after surgery. If you want the recipe let me know. Tastes like a Turkey dinner! Does anyone else have some tips to get through the week? I want to make sure to get enough protein in. To tthose of you just starting out, hang in there!

I may be over reacting but I am not sure what to think. I am 7 weeks post op, and I feel like I did before I had surgery, I can eat more, I get hungry more often, I have been trying to stick to the basics and it has been hard. I will catch myself eating too fast and slow down, after I eat I feel like I have something stuck in my throat it does not bother me and goes away within min. Not to mention I have not lost any more weight. Which I am ok with my main concern is being healthy and not having a slippage or something to that affect. With a slippage is it possible to not have any symptoms? I have seen the dr once and have an appointment on Sat to do my first fill. I am n…

Hey! I got into this cool study on the metabolic changes of weightloss surgery. They are in desperate need of sleevers so if you are going to have the surgery (you need to start pre-op) So if you are getting the sleeve and live near enough to Johns Hopkins to go 22 times in 2 years, you get paid per visit, for a total of $2500. Here is the ad from their website: A study is being performed to evaluate changes in blood glucose and heart function before and after weight loss following bariatric surgery. Men and women, ages 21 to 65, are needed to participate. The study involves 22 outpatient visits over the course of two years. Participants will be eligible for compens…

Hi, I am new to the forums. I have finally after 15 long years decided on WLS. We are currently stationed in Bogota, Colombia and I have decided to have my surgery here. I will have my first meeting with the surgeon this week to discuss my surgery options. I personally haved decided to go with the sleeve; however I am sure he will tell me my options. I have known several people here to undergo WLS and have had great results. At first I was very concerned with doing it abroad, but through research figured it would be a little easier. My husband has been so amazing through this whole decision making process. I will keep you posted on my experiences in Bogota, Colombia…

My wife and I have been getting her pre-approved by insurance for the past year. She is going to have her surgery in September. So we were thinking that we should start getting used to eating the types of foods that we have to eat once the liquid and soft diets are done, so it won't be such a drastic change. I need to find as many normal recipes as possible. and any tips on making the liquid and soft diets more enjoyable/acceptable would be awesome. Thanks all.

I was sleeved on 7/2/2012, just 9 days ago. Since my preop diet which started 7/26, I have lost 29 pounds. I had a pain ball and a drain after surgery. Okay... the drain????? I swore it was going to be the death of me. I had it in for a week after surgery. My pain ball was nothing. I actually got the drain removed monday. My husband wasn't sure if he could hold my hand so my surgeon did it. Although I was grateful, he forgot to tell me to take a deep breath once the nurse was pulling the drain. I am pretty sure I said something like "woahhhhhhhhhhhh"... umm, ouch. Well, here I am 9 days out of my surgery. I spent 3 days in the hospital and when I got home, I…

I went to Kohl's today to get my boys something and there was a really cute dress on clearance in the "regular" section for $18 and I had a 30% off coupon so I bought it even though it was a XL. I figured I am only 2.5 weeks post op it will fit one day. I just tried it on and it fit!!! The best part when I took it off I saw there was a zipper, I didn't even need it!!!! Now that was a feeling I have been waiting for!!

I'm considering the lap band I've been over weight my whole life & the older I'm getting it's starting to give me multiple health issues. I heard that bcbs no longer makes you do the 6 month diet but I have bcbs of Alabama. I've been told however they still require it. I'm currently between jobs so this is the perfect time to get my surgery done before I have to go back to work & will not have time off for awhile. I was wondering if it's true about bcbs of Alabama still requiring 6 months? Also is there anyway to avoid the 6 months diet? I'm new at this and totally lost. Hope you guys can help me out! Thanks

Hello to all! I am new to this forum. I have my sleeve scheduled for this Monday 4/25/11. I have been doing the pre-op liquid diet for the last 6 days and like everyone else am hungry! I just keep focused on the success I can have by doing this. I have been thinking and researching about WLS for about 3 years now. I have chosen Dr. Daniel Cottam in Salt Lake City, UT to do the procedure for me. I am very pleased with his knowledge and experience. I would recommend him to all and I haven't even had the surgery yet! I will post more after I have surgery on Monday and hope that I can make a few friends here on the forum. Thanks Lilyv

I'm sorry, this post isn't strictly about the sleeves... Today was supposed to be my first day of the 2-week pre-op diet. I had a big canvas bag of shakes, pudding and yogurts that I was going to keep in stock at work. I know some people really don't look forward to this liquid diet but I was excited to lose more weight and it meant the final step before my surgery on the 24th. Well about a minute before I was headed out to work, out of nowhere, my beautiful 19-month old son went into a seizure. This has never happened to us before and for a few minutes there I thought I was going to lose him. He ended up having 2 more seizures today and now we're here overnight at PI…

Well, it finally came. My first business trip 7.5 weeks after surgery. It was from NJ to TX just for Wed-Fri. I'd been on an emotional roller coaster lately, and finding myself wanting food for comfort - mostly resisting, but some days with higher-than-average calories (700s instead of 500s). I got more hesitant as it got closer, but decided it was something I needed to try out since I have a 12-day international trip (a mix of business and pleasure) coming up in three weeks. I'm at my company's conference center with tons of free food available everywhere. The upside is that there are plenty of healthy appropriate options. I haven't gone off the rails with my options, …
