I am sure that there are many others out there with my situation maybe somebody can help me understand this because I asked my doctor my dietitian and they just seem to give me short answers and then there in a rush to get away I started out at 347 during my six-month counseling sessions and the day of my surgery I was 327 my surgery was on October 26, 2012. Hello All, I am brand New to this, even to the idea of banding. I welcome any advice, stories, warnings, ect. I am seriously considering lap band surgery. Although I am still a little leery, I have done some online research, but I am still unsure. I want to know personal details, do you still have a lot of excess skin the same as a bypass patient, anyone have good results with very little excess skin? I read that the weight loss is around 1-2 lb. per week, If you exercise adequately, does it help? Do you have frequent vomiting, or nausea? How long do you have to be off work ? Is it difficult to adjust to the dietary restrictions? Thanks so much for any info and shari…

So i have been doing really well over the past week (the weeks post-op) with different textures and foods, eating small bites and not getting anything stuck.... well today Boom!!! There I was, my first bite, small, but I'm the middle of a sentence, I chewed once. ..ONCE the swallowed (old me kicked in and figured that the bite was small enough to go down). I knew instantly it was a mistake (long before it was actually stuck). So about three minutes later, pbing and sliming was the name of the game and i was nauseous as hell (excuse my French but it was hell). so after about 15-20 minutes of this pb (No actual food)/slime, it finally passed or as I'd assume as my burps be…

My band had to be removed in December 2012 because it had dislodged. Now my journey has lead me to Sleeve Surgery. I went to meeting at the end of February to look at what options I have and I am very excited about having the Gastric Sleeve Surgery. I started working with all my doctors to help speed up the process. As of today, I have all my appointments scheduled (Nutritionist, Fitness Evaluation, Physic Evaluation, Pre-Op, Physical, Post-Op). My surgery just got scheduled for June 3, 2013. My case has been fast tracked all the way. My surgeon is Dr. Brad Watkins, UC Health Weight Loss Center located in West Chester, Ohio. My surgery will be preformed at Christ Ho…

Hi Everyone! I am having my surgery on May 28th with Dr. Smolek. I am very excited to get this show on the road. I have been jumping through insurance hoops since July! I start my liquid diet on May 14th. Does anyone have any suggestions on good products that will help get me through this process? I am a college student going to school to be an elementary school teacher. One of the main reasons that I am doing surgery is so I can a positive model for my students and teach them how to take care of themselves and be healthy. Any suggestions on liquid diet and post-op would be greatly appreciated! I am getting pretty nervous as it gets closer!

Hello All! After a grueling seven month process I have finally been granted a surgery date of...July 15! Two more months of waiting. Luckily, I've gotten really good at waiting. My journey started last October when my insurance (Kaiser) began covering weight loss surgery. I took a ten-week class titled "mastering weight management The class was like a slower version of weight watchers meetings (of which I've participated in at least five times over the last 20 years). After the class I had to wait several weeks for, wait for it...another class! In the mean time I had a sleep study and practiced tracking food/exercise. After the beginning of 2013 things started to move …

Hi - I'm new to this forum, but not to banding. I first got banded in 2007 at a weight of 210 lbs. I had a lot of issues, definitely not using the band properly. It ended with a slipped band in 2008, all the Fluid was taken out and 6 week rest period before being refilled. You would think I had learned something. I did, I learned how not to get stuck by eating slider foods, ice cream, Cookies anything sweet and sugary. From 2008 until 2012 I had kept 50 lbs off, but still eating crazy. I went back to doctor for a fill and got to the point of living on ice cream and Soup, thinking this was normal. Finally, I realized how Un-normal this was, I went back and got f…

I had my consult with surgeon on 04/19/13 he told me I was an excellent candidate for lap band surgery I have a BMI of 41.1 with diabetes and high blood pressure .My insurance requires three consecutive weigh ins (had my first 04/01/13 and second 05/01/13, third will be 6/06/13 ) a visit with a nutritionist , and a psych evaluation, I have all these appts scheduled for this month. My surgeon requires an upper gi check to rule out hernias and also a pulmonary consult which I had today, she referred me to get a sleep study done to see if I have sleep apnea. And I also have to have my thyroid checked. I am also required to lose 5-10% of body weight prior to surgery achieving…

Hello I'm new to this site! I have just started out on this journey again for the second time and this time I'm ready, I think! lol. in 2011 I started going to geriatric seminars, found a doctor was going to get the lap band, the doctor recommended RNY butbut I was hesitant about having such a serious surgery so I stopped the process. I'm a nurse I work with bariatric patients and have done my research so now I am considering RNY or gastric sleeve. I feel this time I am more informed, I take care of the patients when they come out of surgery so I know what to anticipate and although everyone is different the surgery part is pretty straight forward it what happens when yo…

Hi All: I just had the RNY procedure March 22, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. My surgeon is Hazem N. Shamseddeen, M. D. I'll never forget the day in July, 2011 when my medical complaints to my general practitioner were about starting to injure my arms & hands in supporting my weight to get in and out of bed, and up and down from seated position. I was being treated mainly for complications of Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, Morbid Obesity, and severe mobility impairment requiring use of a power wheelchair. She asked me if I had ever considered Bariatric surgery, told me to do my homework and let her know what I decide. (I thought only people who…

I found some chocolate milk that is non-fat, 2g sugar, and 9g protein! And it tastes like real chocolate milk! Not like ick! I am super happy, I got it from Kroger, Kroger brand. It comes in 16 oz cartons, and it's 1 dollar. It is awesome for a little treat, that's still within the guidelines of full liquids. I'm not going to have it every day, just when I need that little bit of sweet. Made my day!

I've been trying to lose weight for years now. I've joined gyms, weight watchers and done all kinds of fad diets. My job is very physical and my weight is to much for my knees. When I lose, I gain right back. I'm 40 so I know my metabolism is slower. I started doing my research and went to a seminar referred by my cousin. I wanted the lap band at first but after the seminar I decided the sleeve. That was on March 16. The following week I met with the Dr. My bmi was only at 39. With my insurance it requires 40 without commodities. With one visit to the Psychiatrist. That's it. So I went back on April 29. Got a call on April 30 to go see a psychiatrist and once they get wor…

Hey! My name is Becka and I started my process in March/April so right now I'm three months pre-op and a complete newbie. I figured I'd find a social networking group of people who know what I'm going through and going to be going through for the future. It's hard to relate to friends and family when they have no idea what this process is like and all it entails. I'm having my surgery in Houston with Dr. Robert Marvin. He's super nice. In two weeks I have an upper gi, my psych eval, then three more visits with my nutritionist. I should be having surgery by the end of July or beginning of August. I'm super nervous about this whole thing but anxious none the less. If anybo…

so here I am! In Oct. 2012 I went to see my PCP for a follow up appointment after having his help for over a year in trying to drop this weight I had gained almost instantly! I guess I really should begin before this point. While growing up my whole family was "big boned" I have many family members well over the 300# mark, I was one of the smaller ones at age 14 I recall being 180# and 5'7". When I got married at age 19 I wore a size 20, I had my first child at age 20, while I was pregnant I only gained 9#! While breast feeding I had lost a considerable amount of weight! I don't know how heavy I was but I know I got into a size 12! I regained after my son got older, he is…

I'm struggling with the way I'm losing weight. I carry ALL of my weight in my stomach. I am down about 37 lbs in 10 weeks , however I am not losing the belly. My legs and butt can fit into a size 13 jean, but my tummy is still a tight 18. Does anyone else struggle with this? Are there ways to lose tummy fat? I'm very low carb (under 25/ day) and avoid sugar and sf substitutes. Don't get me wrong, I'm still thrilled at my weight loss, but the tummy was an issue before and still is. Help!

I'm not sure what my emotions are today. I went for a mile long walk and thought that would help. Nope... I'm not sure if I'm depressed or overwhelmed. Maybe it's time for be to go back to work. I realized I have only had one full bottle of water and a half one. A sip of my protein drink then all of a sudden I was sick, when just the other day I don't good with it. O and I've had a few spoons of broth and jello. I have got to do better. To all of my believers and prayer warriors, please pray for the Chatman house hold.

Most threads on this forum are focused on Weight loss. This is great and I'm hoping to lose weight, but for me, the priority is diabetes. I'm wondering if anyone out there has diabetes and experience with how it improved (or didn't) with RNY. I've been dealing with out of control diabetes for 2 years (blood sugar consistently over 200) and wonder if anyone had it that bad before the surgery. I have been on maximum oral meds plus insulin injection. Was about to increase dose as doc still couldn't get me under 200. Any experienced diabetic / RNY'ers out there?

Hello! Hello!! Hello!!! To all my wonderful sleeve peeps! Well, I made it to the other side of VSG surgery and lived to tell about it! Some of you may have read my 'worry woes' pre-op. If not, you can read them here. The nerves lasted right up until I went under...even was scared afterwards. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me 'splain it all below... Part 1: Before surgery... So I get to Tijuana uneventfully. Cecy (Dr. Kelly's wife) promptly picked me up from the airport. As with others, she gave me a brief tour of parts of San Diego (the pier, historic old town, convention center, etc.) before we headed for the border. Crossing into Mexico was a breeze. …

My journey began with surgery on Oct 30. I know no one wants to hear about complications but I wish I would of known about them ahead of time. I had three tears leaks I didn't realize them until I had an abscess from the liquid I was drinking it all drained into my abdominal region until the pressure built up and spilled out my incesion. I then ended up in emergency surgery and icy and three months of hospital stay. It was very rough. But I finally got my feeding tube out April 13 that's right no food till two weeks ago. Please don't let this change your mind on surgery. I am happy lost 110 lbs 40 more to go.

Ok it is now May!! How is everyone feeling? How much have you lost so far? Any regrets? I was sleeved on the 8th I am doing good. My surgery went well. I don't remember much about that day. I guess before surgery I was dancing and singing. I really wasn't nervous. I was more calm than I thought I would be. After I was sleepy and mean lol. I didn't have any pain really. No gas pains, or stomach pain. Day 2 was my hardest day for some pain but I stayed up on my meds and slept a lot. I do have an incision that is bleeding today. I fell on my stomach Sunday and I noticed it looked odd after that. Then today I woke up with a bloody incision. It's not painful. I of course cal…

So today is my big day and I am having so many mixed feelings/emotions that I am starting to flip out a bit. First of all, my husband is not supportive at all and has refused to go to the hospital with me so my best friend is going to accompany me. This has been a really hard adjustment in itself but I am not losing sight of what the end result will be regardless of what he thinks. Secondly, I hate surgery and get myself all worked up when I have to have it!!!! So now, I have been sick with a cold for the last three days and I am really worried that something will go wrong. The hospital said that they will do the surgery as long as I have no fever (which I haven't had any…
