PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. I was just approved for the sleeve and am freaking out because of all the different choices of vitamins and proteins. In a support the dietitian suggested that I search around for different types of non Whey proteins since I lactose intolerance. I stumbled across this website and am now overwhelmed.

Hi all, I have been scheduled for VSG on April 11th. I currently work for my state's government and I have gotten a job offer to move to a new state agency and they want me to start in March - luckily no insurance problem since I am staying on the same state plan. I have not discussed surgery with the new job yet because I was not scheduled for surgery at the time of my interview and I have not responded to the offer yet. How should I go about telling the new job that I may need up to 4 weeks off within the first month of starting (per my doctor)? I have heard two things so far: 1. take the job and tell them AFTER you are hired, because medical procedures are co…

Has anyone used UNUM short term disability for their surgery? I have it and pay for it every month, but I’m not quite sure I can use it for WLS. I don’t want to ask my HR at work yet cause they are kind of jerks and I don’t want to give them extra time to research it haha. If anyone has any information or experience with this I would really appreciate it!

Today is the first day of my 6 week, 1000kcal a day shake diet. I’ve been dreading this for a while now but I’ll trust my surgeon and follow it religiously. My biggest concern is being this hungry and frustrated with no solids at work and school. Hopefully it gets better after the first few days! (RNY May 13th)

  6. my mind is messing with me knowing that'll it be the last time probably that i'll probably never be able to eat all my fav foods. im sticking to it! but mentally it's draining on me.

I am 3 1/2 weeks actually post op from gastric sleeve but my question is about the IV they put on for surgery. As someone who has had multiple surgeries (I'm talking 35+) They have NEVER had this much of a problem. I have an extreme phobia of needles... but I kept it together as much as I could. And I didnt move... But they put in the numbing stuff and then the iv needle. But they tried.. NO JOKE for 15min trying to get the vein... Before ultimately giving up and going to my left arm. But now I have a bruise that just hasn't gone away. Has anyone else had issues like that?

Hey everyone so I had a couple of appointments today and also had to see my surgery coordinator and good news is I got a surgery date but the bad news is they ordered a nicotine test for Thursday and I quit smoking last Tuesday. She said it would be out of my system in 2 weeks but it hasn't been 2 weeks. I'm so upset they probably going to cancel my surgery date. I am so screwed

Hello! I am having a sleeve surgery on 3/27 so just a few days away! The program that I am in is with one of the best hospitals in the nation and I completely trust them. However, they do things pretty differently than what most other programs do. The biggest difference is that I am in my 10 diet pre-op liquid diet and their program does not allow protein shakes. They want you to get protein naturally through things like milk and by blending food. They gave a list of foods that you can eat pre-op which includes smoothies blended with red fruit and greek yogurt. The impression I get from other programs is they are super low carb because this shrinks the liver. Well, …

  12. Just wondering if anyone has had surgery done by Dr. Brian Gluck out of Muskegon, Mi? What was your post op diet like with him?? It looks like in his post operative paperwork it's going to take like 5 months to progress to high protein, low fat, "normal diet"

Hi everyone! My name is Kayla, I'm 31 and got approval to start the journey to a vsg surgery in February of this year, so I've completed my education webinars and a week of trial liquid and healthy eating diet. The surgeon here in my province (there's only one) requires me to continue the bariatric diet and to complete daily food journals from now on. If I don't have these food journals they may delay my surgery. I'm finding it really difficult to stick to 3 oz protein and half a cup veggies (surgeon recommended diet) with small snacks of a half serving of fruit and protein. I won't likely get to have the actual surgery for up to another 11 months, only …

Hi everyone, so last year August I spoke with my primary care doctor about getting weight loss surgery. We both agree its the best choice for me.I did all my classes with my nutritionist & got approved for gastric bypass surgery. My surgery date is April 19 but for some reason I'm scared. I read a few entries about people regretting doing surgery & some horror stories. I read stories about people gaining back weight & others in n out of hospitals for various things.I'm scared. I'm terrified and honestly don't know if I should continue this journey. I'm 5'7 273lbs. I try so much different weight loss pills/diets and none work. I want to get the surgery so bad t…

I am terrified right now, even though I am still in the process of being authorized by insurance (submitted by surgeons office today). Does anyone else experience the emotional difficulty of dealing with the idea of giving up certain foods and changing all your eating patterns. I am 30 years old, 5'7'' overweight since age 6 and afraid I won't be helped by this surgery. I know I have over 100 lbs to lose and would be so broken if this did not stick. I have close family members who think I should not do it and I am starting to doubt myself. ( BMI 41 CW 265 GW 160)

I am on Day 6 of the 2 week Pre-op liquid diet and I've done exactly what was prescribed, 3 protein shakes a day and lots of water and sugar free jello or popsicles a couple times a day for a snack. The 2nd day was pretty rough and I still have a mild headache at times, but I'm getting to the point that I'm just not hungry. I drink the shakes at certain times of the day but only because I have set reminders, not because my body is telling me that I'm hungry. Has anyone else experienced this?

  34. Good morning! So my surgery date is 3/28/19 and I started my 2 week liquid diet yesterday. I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes last year in June before I started pursuing bariatric surgery and this diagnosis actually pushed me to go through with it so I decided to not go on insulin since this surgery has such a high rate of success in putting diabetes into remission. I'm getting nervous though since my fasting glucose result just came back and it was really high, 170 to be exact, and I'm worried my surgery might be delayed because of this?

Hi, I'm 2 weeks post op and I'm on a semi solid diet. Any ideas how many calories I should be aiming for? Some days I average 600-800 calories per day but I haven't lost weight this week which is irritating to say the least. Also I can drink liquid normally is this right? I do not have any reflux or issues with gulping down a quick glass of water. Thanks Av

Like last night was trying to talk with my kids about dinner and everything they were suggesting i was telling them i couldnt cause they wouldnt cause they wouldnt help me with keep me from gaining weight and then was laughing at me for trying to get healthy for them and myself. And make me wanna second guess myself if i should check my motives why i should be doing this or who is helping me doing it. Anyone else ever else go threw this

  42. I've been prescribed Qysimia for my 6 month pre-op weight management. I am finished with that and have been approved through insurance. Now I am just waiting for my surgery date. I don't know if I should keep taking the meds or not. I feel like it will help with the pre-op diet because I am not hungry at all while taking them. My surgeon is aware of the meds but hasn't mentioned.

I have so many emotions right now: excited (2 more days! I got all 1.5 wks of planning done!), nervous ( bcs, duh), exhausted (liquid diet, long LONG few days trying to prep for last minute surgery), annoyed (how many times do I have to tell my co-workers I'm going on a leave starting Wednesday?? Stop sending me meeting requests!), and amused (my hubs just deadpanned, "So, since Friday you've lost 8 pounds. You should just stick to this 1000 calorie diet and slip the surgery."). Mostly, I'm sleepy. And really happy I got a last minute date and didn't have to do 2 weeks of full liquids while dealing with middle schoolers... Friday-Tuesday was enough. I bolted out of school…

It's Day 3 of my pre-op diet, of 7 servings of Optifast. I have found the following: The peanut butter bar sucks. Everything else is okay, but I find myself craving three things. I'm craving something crunchy. I'm craving something salty. And I'm craving something a bit more meat heavy. I'll deal with it, and I'm finding myself even looking forward to the clear liquids day before the surgery. Because then I can have some beef broth. I want beef broth. Anyone else have cravings on their pre-op, and how did you deal with them?

So I have my 2nd visit with the surgeon next week. On that day I will also meet with the dietician and have my Psych eval. My insurance only requires 3 month visits so next month will be my last appointments. I’m extremely nervous about having my weight checked because I can’t gain any weight during this 3 months per insurance. Now I quit smoking 8 days ago and I just feel like I have gained weight due to snacking. I took Chantix for 2 days and didn’t like the side effects so I’m pretty much winging this cold turkey. Did anyone gain weight between the first and second dr. visit ?

  46. I went 9 days straight without cheating one bit and then boom I totally mess it up. Now I didn’t over do it, but either way I did eat on Friday a whopper Jr. Saturday I got terrible news that a dear friend of only 31 years of age passed away of a massive heart attack and I ate a handful of chicken and 1 beef taco. Sunday was the wake and after I ate a small mash potato and Monday too, and today I ate a cup of beef with rice. I’m schedule for surgery this Thursday. Did I mess myself up? Please, any help…

Hello, I'm currently doing the medically supervised weight loss thing trying to qualify for surgery. My surgeon wants me to eat 80 - 100 g protein and under 50 g carbs. I'm also trying to stay around 1500 calories. Where I am having trouble is managing these requirements during my long days. I get up at 2:30a for work and get off at 1:30p. I also have class m - f that lasts until 9pm. I'm not usually in bed until around 10pm. I'm not sure how to manage my calories during the 19.5 hour days. I usually end up meeting my goals around 4pm and then still have 6 hours left in the day. Even getting to 4pm is hard. I'm usually starving between my scheduled lunch a…

So, since I was to start on my pre-op diet today (and did), I figured that I'd use last weekend to indulge a little bit. I had dinner at Texas de Brazil, and it was fantastic. I'm due for my surgery on the 21st of this month and I'm really starting to get second thoughts about this. Everyone around me is so excited for me, telling me how much better my life will be and I can't get that excited. I'm super nervous, worried and just feeling an intense need to back out. I'm having a hard time focusing on anything but the negatives I'm seeing in my future. The super restricted diet, having to take so many vitamins, the cost (paying out of pocket for the whole thing), the way I'll look after (excess skin), even a bit of worry that I won't be me anymore.
