PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Hello my name is Diana, so far I am having my surgery on April 8 at 12:30pm. So i have to get to hospital at 10:30am. Im worried only for the weigh in, because Ive read some where that if you don't loose weight in two week liquid diet then they cancel surgery. MY two week liquid diet was like this. I'll write what my paper says. BREASKFAST: Protein shake LUNCH: 3 oz grilled chicken, spinach salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, red beans and beets) + olive oil and vinegar dressing DINNER: Protein shake SNACKS: Greek Yogurt, sugar free apple sauce, fresh fruit (berries), whole grain crackers ( 3-4 ), sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles sticks , carrot and c…

Does anyone on here have Aetna? If so how were they? I am new at this so please forgive all my questions. I have a seminar coming up next week.

Has anyone else chosen this surgery? It's actually the only one I'm interested in, but there seems to be so little post op info on it. Everything I read deals with RNY. Does anyone have decent books or sites they can recommend for more education?

Just wondering if anyone who’s already gone through the step of signing all the papers for consent for insurance before submitting can tell me if they also need the lab work done prior to this in order to submit? My appointment is on Friday and if they are going to request me to get blood work done I might just hold out and fast that morning so I can run after and get them done.

Hey everyone. I had a quick question. I know that you have to get cleared by a psychologist to have the surgery but I’m bit worried. 3 years ago I was hospitalized for 6 months for an eating disorder. I was restricting and purging, and over exercising. In those 6 months I lost about 100 pounds but when I was released from the hospital I gained back double that weight in 3 years. Will they not do surgery on me because I have a eating disorder history. All answers are appreciated. Thankyou, Marissa

So today I had my upper GI done and found out I have GERD does that mean I can't have sleeve but would have to go with bypass instead.

So today I picked up my home sleep study kit..One step closer to getting approval.

So i went for my consultation with my surgon and got paper work don and after today i have one last thing to do then i should be getting my surgery date i cant weight but some people do tell me its the hardest thing to do its the pysch evaluation but i feel like i got thins i am flying threw this with flying colors he says out of over 20 years he has been doing this that he never seen anyone as fast as me have everything done

I have been discussing Bariatric Sleeve surgery but my daughter is so against me having it done. I’m supposed to be on a 10 day post op starting yesterday but I keep cheating ??‍♀️. 1 Toddler size portion/meal and nothing UNHEALTHY. I just asked my doctor to refer me for gastric sleeve surgery. He replied on Thursday, April 4th that he submitted the referral. Now what? How long does it take usually after the referral at Kaiser Fontana? I'm in Ireland and Bariatric Surgery has only recently become generally available. I will be one of the first to have the procedure in a newly established Clinic. I'm 62, 5'10" and weigh 232 lbs. I developed a neurological illness in my 40's and piled on weight. Up to then, I had been slim. I want my skinny self back !!! My daughter is soo against me having the surgery - she says I'll never again be able to enjoy a meal and will miss out on so much, skinny isn't everything (she's skinny !!), etc., etc., etc. To me - Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels !!! It’s Sunday night. My surgery is Tuesday. I’ve actually made it through 13 days of a liquid diet and lost 11 pounds. Tomorrow I’m on clear liquids all day. I also am having my teeth cleaned tomorrow. I am very nervous. I keep thinking I’m forgetting something.

Hello! I just had a question about eating and drinking before the surgery. My surgery is tomorrow morning 04/04 and my doctor said not to eat or drink anything after 10 pm. It's almost 10 right now and I ate about 4 hours ago and just drank a bottle of water but I feel like my stomach is full. I'm worried there'll still be some food or water in my stomach and intestines when they do the surgery. Is that possible? It just seems unreal that it could really completely empty out by 5 am...

Hi everyone. My name is Michelle and I'm scheduled for the DS on April 5th. I am 5 foot tall and weigh 192. I have high blood pressure and I'm on 3 different types of medication and my BP is still not controlled. Its the bottom number they cant control. My initial appt is next Thursday, April 11th. My BMI is 53, and has been 50+ for over 3 years now. I have Aetna, and they do cover Bariatric — the way I read the policy, they will require 3 months of pre-op visits with a nutritionist, medically supervised weight loss to prepare for surgery, yes? Here is my challenge...my policy runs from Sept 1 to Sept 1. Right now, I have met my entire deductible, and almost all of my out of pocket, thanks to a week-long hospital stay early in the plan year. Hello everyone I’m Marissa and I’m only nineteen years old. I’m very scared to have this surgery. I was hoping to find a friend in here to talk to about what’s happing with each other. My surgery is on the 19 of this month but had to get two of my tooth taken out today. One of my wisdom teeth grew crooked and infected so was the one next to it. So had to pull both. I was prescribe ibuprofen for the pain. My dentist said it was okay to take but haven't taken them as yet tho. I'm so depressed right now from removing my teeth. I cried days the last time & today I cried a hour straight. This is not my first time removing teeth. I feel so lost. So ugly. I hate myself l. Im so sad.Only good thing it's the ones in the back.

Good Morning! I have BCN insurance and have to go through the 6 months of appointments with my primary doctor before a surgery can be scheduled. Only 5 more weeks til that final date!! How long of a wait did anyone have for the surgery to be scheduled after they completed their insurance requirements? Do I have a chance in hell of it happening relatively soon or will I likely have to wait several months for a date? Just curious how this works. Thanks for your answers!!

I had my psych eval yesterday and it all went really well. We spent the first half of the appointment just talking and then I did three standardized psych tests, the first two were just anxiety/depression screenings which he saw no concerns with and the third one was 175 true/false questions. FWIW, I feel bad for anyone with severe paranoia that has to take that test, holy moly it was making me paranoid! Anyways, I took it on paper but he said normally they do it via computer and the program wasn't working right but at a glance he said that I am super organized, a perfectionist with perhaps a touch of OCD, and that I was a repressor. when I first started the process I emailed my insurance Carefirst BCBS and they told me I could use weight watchers or jenny craig to satisfy my diet programs requirement. My surgeon said usually Insurance want to see a more structured program but he was going to try to submit my paperwork and see what happens..has anyone been approved using one of those diet programs instead of meeting with a nutritionist?

Hi everyone ... my surgery is 3 days away... tomorrow starts my clear liquid diet for 2 days. No protein shakes. No solid foods. Just water, apple juice, broth, jello. I’m so excited for the surgery, but scared of getting through the next 2 days. Any advice? Any experience with this? How hungry did you get?

I picked up my machine this morning to do the at home sleep study. I was told that I have to sleep with it for 3 consecutive nights for accurate results. For those of you who did the at home sleep study, how many nights did you have to sleep with the machine ?

So my advocate called today and said my insurance requires 2 years of weight history. I can only provide 1 year from the dr which is 2018 because I didn’t have a PCP in 2017. So she suggested that I write a letter and send pics explaining my reasons for wanting the surgery. So my question is has anyone submitted pics to the insurance for your 2 weight history? What was your your outcome if you did ?

Is doing a 6 month supervised diet a stipulation of coverage? Or can you get approved without the 6 month supervised diet?

Thought I'd give everybody the heads up. I'm in Adelaide I found a local Amcal chemist that have their own range of vitamins and found B12 1000mcg that dissolves on your tongue for half the price of Blackmore and I spoke to pharmacist and he said the other one has fancy packaging that's it they both are same strength and so the same thing... An example Blackmore $18 for 60 Amcal generic $16 for 120 Excellent saving there!!! They also had same calcium and magnesium maybe next time you're near an Amcal have a look!

Not "omg I can't believe the size of her" overweight. But, hovering around the 190 mark since my late 20s. In my early 20s I weighed 110 and I loved it. Everything about it. I'm so frustrated my last thing I need a letter of support from my therapist and no one will write me one the lady I'm seeing now said she can't and I've called my old therapist and he said they are not allowed to. My PCP gave me a referral to a psychiatrist and they said they won't do it.

My husband is a runner.. I want nothing more than to run with him. The problem, he's a distance runner. An ultra runner. Im afraid that I won't be able to even run a half marathon because of the restrictions of how much I will be able to drink and eat. Has anyone had the surgery and been able to start running? Hi, I have my surgery on April 3rd, On the pre opt diet it's hard but ill survive So I've had 5 major surgeries in my life chest cracked open and others. I tried the sleep back in May but had scar tissues from a lap band and he wasn't able to do it said come back in 6 weeks, well i thought i'm not ready for round 2 just yet . I had lap band to gastric sleeve surgery.. as a result ive had really bad back pain. I had two medial branch blocks and they found 2 herniated discs.. i was wondering if this was a gi issue or a back issue.. has anyone heard of this?

My last in weigh in is in 2 weeks and I need to loose 10lbs. This is really stressing me out because I gained 3lbs on my 2nd weigh in. If I don’t loose then I will be denied and have to start all over. I recently quit smoking and that contributed to my weight gain. OMG !!!!!!!

I have UMR insurance, I have been wanting to get the Gastric Sleeve for a while now. However I am not sure how to even start, where to turn or if I can get my insurance to cover it. I live in Idaho so they are not mandated to cover any bariatric surgeries. Does anyone have advise or know a way around it? Thanks in Advance

I was a little frustrated with a weight loss stall in the last few days but then saw some progress today. Have lost 13 lbs so far and have 6 days left to lose more before surgery. My goal is 20 lbs before surgery!

How long after you were authorized from insurance did you get a surgery date? I know you need pre op testing as well. My insurance should be letting me know next week!

Psych eval went great. It was def more of an eval that I expected it should be and from what I have read from everyone’s experience on here. I just had about 3 papers of 20 questions to fill out and then about an hour of face to face talk. She asked a little of everything all the way back from my childhood through high school and up. And of course why I want this and how I think it will work and the complications I might think could arise or the challenges... stuff like that. My surgeons office called me to let me know that they are going to submit my paperwork for insurance approval. They told me that my insurance might request a nicotine blood test because I am a former smoker. Well , in two days I got the call to let me know that I was approved by my insurance. I assumed at this point that I didn't need to have the blood test done. I was told I'd be called in two weeks by the surgery scheduler. Fast forward 3-4 weeks, no call. Nothing. No news, nothing. Hi ya'll! This is my very first post but I've been reading through the forums for a few weeks now. I am having trouble finding a provider to do my psych evaluation. I am having surgery with Dr. Alisa Coker at Johns Hopkins Bayview (and the experience has been wonderful thus far), but the psychologists they work with are scheduling into June or July of this year. I spoke with Dr. Coker's coordinator and she said that I am not limited to those providers specifically, I just needed to make sure it was a psychologist or psychiatrist who is able to perform bariatric surgery evaluations.
