Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

I was just on target.com and noticed that there is a game called "my fitness coach" for the wii. I was wondering if anyone has this and what they think of it. Any thoughts would be appreciated it.

  2. Hi! I've read all the reviews on the internet, amazon, etc...how ever I'm wondering if there are fellow bandsters who could recommend one over the other? I just want something that my body can handle, will be challenging and most of all will produce tone in my muscles!! Please advise!

  3. Hey all, I am back to the gym at long last and really enjoying it, but I do have something worrysome. All that loose skin around my belly and back slaps around... a LOT if I'm jumping around. I worry that it's going to sag more (kinda like going without a bra). Any ideas on what to wear that can support my flabby bits? I'm thinking I'll try some snug bike shorts or something and see if that does the trick. It's not a pleasant feeling!:cursing:

I am taking the last of my pre-tests this week then I'll get my surg date. I'm excited about it but the more I read here I'm getting a bit worried about this exercise situation. I literally HATE to exercise. I don't like to sweat. Is it absolutely necessary for me to exercise in order to lose the weight after the band? I think I'll be able to stick to my food plan fairly easily after the band but the exercise you guys are talking about puts a damper on things for me. Exercise? DO I HAVE TO?

There is a fantastic trainer in Sydney who has helped a couple of my friends who have had the surgery lose weight and motivate them. One friend has lost 30kgs and has toned up a lot since being trained by him and the other friend has lost 21kgs. So far since training with him for a month I've lost 8 kgs as well as inches. I feel so motivated not just because I'm losing weight and feeling fit but because seeing him is a motivation in itself. He has also had the surgery and has lost a massive 84kgs. Seeing how far he's come gives me the drive to push myself. Not only has he been great in helping me tone and get fit but he's great on the emotional and motivational side be…

So I've found my fave exercise and I don't have to leave home! I don't know how many people get FitTV but there is a bellydancing show called Shimmy Its really fun and with a half hour run time its a good way to ease into exercising. Of course if your not into dancing--not for you. Anyway, I thought I'd share what I'm into right now

  7. I have the GoWear Fit and have been trying to find out information on something that has me a bit confused. Maybe somebody here might know the answer. I have noticed that when I ride my motorcycle, my calories go up. The other night I was riding home from school and it was a solid mass of 7 and 8 calories a minute. Granted, it was chilly, but even today I was on it for a while and my calories are higher during that time. My husband seems to think the device is reading the vibrating of the bike or something and isn't really indicative of any real caloric expenditure on my part. Anybody know differently or have an opinion? I'm HOPING it's for real, but I'm not sur…

I was diagnosed 2 years ago with Lymphedema in my lower legs. My cankles (how I call them) were huge and my calves soon became extremely large- I saw the vascular surgeon and he referred me for therapy- I went EVERYDAY for 2 weeks for banding and then wore compression stockings every day- Once the compression stockings started getting stuck where my legs meet my foot they told me I needed something more at night- ( I was wearing my stockings from 7:30 am t0 7:30 pm) so I got these Reed sleeves- they are like boots for your calves and have pressure straps that go up mimicing the banding and stockings- They are very cumbersome and I hate them plus they fall off at like 2am…

Let's keep 'er rolling along. Same rules as always: none. All you have to do is list your exercises you are doing. Just a way of keeping us accountable to each other. As for me today, nada. Slept in after two nights of softball and a fill yesterday. Just didn't feel like my innards could take the jostling of running on the treadmill after the fill. I can still feel the swelling a bit. I'll get back to it tomorrow. If nothing else, I'll hit the elliptical.

Hi all, I've been banded since November, but had to go through a port replacement so I am just NOW starting to understanding restriction. I've seen good results where I am finally beginning to lose some weight. But, I find that my calorie intake is so low that exercising (I do curves right now) is just sooooo hard..... I know, eat Protein and I do, but its a struggle. Anyone else in the same boat?

  13. I'm new to working out, I had been going to curves the past 2 months but unfortunatly I can not afford the membership. I walk in my neighborhood when I can - approx 1 mile steep hills! but the weather has been soo crummy lately that I can't always get out to do that. so I'm here asking for help and advise! I have been doing well on this journey, down 66lbs and don't want it to slow by lack of excersize! What do you do at home to work out? any adivise and suggestions would be great!!!

  16. I was banded on March 2, 2009 and have lost about 45 pounds. I'm still around 235-240. I've been walking about 5 times a week for the last 8 weeks or so, and have increased from 20 minutes to about 35-45 per session (mostly flat areas with some hills) . I am losing weight and feeling good, my legs and tush are definitely more muscular and I'm also working my arms with freeweights 3-4 times a week. My question is--everyone says cardio, cardio, cardio to get rid of belly fat--am I doing the right thing? Should I be doing something different? I want this spare tire to shrink!

  17. Hi all - I ride, a lot, and had been relying on Shot Blox to keep me going on rides longer than 50 miles, but after hitting 300 miles on the bike last week, I came to on Monday morning to find I'd gained about 5 lbs. As of Wednesday I've only lost about 1.5, so I'm thinking that's real weight, not just Water, and the only thing I can attribute it to is the number of Shot Blox I consumed. I did 50 miles on Monday, 35 on Tuesday, 55 on Wednesday, 45 on Thursday, 30 on Friday, 50 on Saturday and 38 on Sunday. That's two or three packages a ride, or more, plus miscellaneous bananas, cliff bars, and regular meals. Bottom line, I'm trying to figure out what to eat on long ri…

  18. This last Sunday I put all of my winter training to the test at IM Florida 70.3. The following is some random tidbits/thoughts concerning the experience. Friday I fly from fog, rain and 55 high degree temps in NJ. I take my $50 hit from Jet Blue for my bike box and relax in my exit row seat. Land in Orlando, get outside, and get stopped by “the wall of heat.” Wow…that was a shock to the system. Get bike assembled and eagerly await registration the next day. Got to WDW at 9:00, as I was getting Zipp 404’s put on my bike prior to bike check-in. I figured I’d try them for $145 before laying out $2200 on them, if I ever do. DH just brought me a Wii Fit and I love it!!!!!!! I was wondering if anyone else uses it as a part of their work out routine, how long, etc? I know it can't be the only work out a person does, but right now, while I am waiting for a date, I am trying to get myself geared up and making minor changes in my life. At my size, any movement I make is a bonus and through the games and activities, I do work up a sweat and raise my heart rate.... I do recommend this as an addition... Lori

So I am on my feet 12 hours a day 5 days a week. On my feet, I mean my butt doesn't hit a chair until I get off work. 8am to 8pm and sometimes alittle later. I have two little children at home and no lunch. Literally, my lunch consists of eating a veggie delight from subway inbetween rooming patients and doing sutures. I also work from 6pm to 9am Saturday night into Sunday morning, but that's home care for an elderly lady so it's pretty simple. No physical activity. I don't know where to fit in exercise. I'm nervous that I truly will not have time to fit it in. I refuse to take my time away from my children because I have so little of it as it is. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone. So, I have this problem. From being overweight all my life I have three disks in my lower back that are degenerating. Well, due to this it causes back pain from time to time. Here is my problem, every time I excercise I end up on bed rest for 4-5 days because my back is flared up in pain. It is so frustrating because I want to be able to excercise, especially after my surgery. Any ideas or anyone with similar problem? I guess worse case scenario I will need to wait until I get some of the weight off and hope then it won't cause so much pain after excersise. It's a lose lose situation:confused:

I'm currently about 330 pounds. does anyone have an opinion on what brand/model bike would be good for a larger rider. It will mainly be used for in-town riding with some hills. I would also be cool if I could use it on some mild trails (rails-to-trails). I'm probably looking for a comfort or hybrid...But which one. As for price, I'd like to stay under $300, if possible. I know I'll for to check them out for myself, but I'd like to have some ideas as to what has worked for others in my situation. I appreciate any direction I can get! Take …

  37. Wow, this is interesting! Who'd have thought that the humble chocmilk was better than all those fancy sports drinks - not to mention the same in calories! By the way, don't get fooled by the "low fat" versions of choc milk - they just replace the fat content with extra sugar and end up with the same calorie value!

I was banded in mid-November and have since experienced very minor, occasional niggles from my port area. I've read some of the posts on here and it seems that this is not unusual. However, today I tried some Pilates for the first time and got some quite unpleasant pain around my port area. It only occurred when I lay on my left side (the side my port is on) and had to raise my right leg up. It was really quite sore so I stopped this move and didn't attempt it again. We later had to do the same move on the other side - and there was no port pain this time. Has anyone else experienced port pain several months after surgery? At first I started out and could only do 20 minutes of cardio...by the third day I pushed it up to 40 minutes with the last 3 days at 45 minutes. I'm eating healthy; following the rules! I was banded in Oct. 08. I have lost 41 pounds and this is my first time really exercising since surgery.
